This will be a quick review:
Food was decent enough.
Service was rather quick and not rude at all.
Prices are fair, not really expensive. One would expect to spend less than 10 CADs for a quick meal. Oh, and it is a cafe-type so tips are placed on the tip jar.
Yes, it is quite Japanese.
The question is, then, why 3 stars? The one thing one notices before entering Kitano Donburi are the fancy plastic food models displayed at the entrance. This is very Japan-like!
BUT! The Tempura Don that I ordered, which looked quite scrumptilicious in the display, was a little different from what I actually got. Yes, it had the two prawns and some veggies, but did not look as good (can't say for the taste, for displays with flavor are yet to be invented).
In Japan, where food competition is deadly, matching what they show and what they serve is serious business. Even some inspectors will make sure of it.
If content and looks could match what they display, and improved their flavor, this place could have 4-5 stars. Not yet. -

I`ve been here twice now since they first opened and so far I have not been impressed. I really wanted to like this place as I thought the concept was really cool and I was waiting patiently for them to open while they were doing renovations.
They offer an extensive menu of different types of donburis as well as sushi rolls here. The first time I came in, I was honestly overwhelmed by their giant menu posted on the wall and opted to order a couple pieces of aburi sushi and nigiris. The scallop aburi was really good, but the salmon aburi was a bit disappointing with it being a bit on the over-cooked side ( I was hoping for lightly torched sashimi). The nigiris were mediocre. One thing I have to mention is that this place is Japanese owned, and the staff that I was ordering with did not have the best English skills so it was a little tough when I was making my order.
The second time I came in I ordered a chicken katsu curry don to-go. While the curry itself tasted pretty good, I felt that it did not come with nearly enough curry sauce and the portion they gave me was only enough to coat half of my rice. Also, I did not receive my miso soup which was supplosed to come with the meal so that was rather disappointing.Listed in: I love sushi!

This place is crazy. It's been only a few weeks since they opened and now there's a line out the door during lunchtime.
A colleague had told me we should try Kita No Donburi when he noticed they'd opened. We checked them out a couple weeks ago and were just barely able to grab a table, they were already getting that busy. This time we arrived around the same time and found that the lineup literally couldn't be contained inside the restaurant and trailed out the door. We got fed though, we just had to be patient.
As for food, they offer a wide range of donburi, sushi, etc. So far I've tried the thai chicken don and the hambaga don. Thai chicken was excellent, lots of spice and chicken. This time, the hambaga don didn't impress me nearly as much. I found it a bit dry, and the egg yolk looked runny in the photo on the wall, but was firm when I actually got my order. Oh well, that won't deter me. I'll go back and try something else. -

I had hoped to really like this place. After living in Japan for 2 years - Donburi is something I know! So, was hoping to have a taste of authentic Donburi, but was disappointed. The Oyako Dun was flavourless and watery. The set up is a bit weird too - it's kind of self serve but not. If you are meeting someone and you get there first you sit but then when your friend arrives you have to get up and order - then they bring the food out. Why don't they just take the order at the table in the first place. It's a very busy place but not sure if I'll try it again.

I was initially impressed with the place, it had a good atmosphere and, from what I saw, self-serve green tea (so no more awkward requests for a refill).
I ordered one of their chicken donburi-s to go. I found the chicken too dry and overcooked. It was very tasteless. Their homemade sauce was ok. I'd like to give it another try before I write it off though... -

Japanese chic atmosphere, but food is really average good and you feel smelling like it. Prices aren't cheap, but they aren't out of the ballpark. If you're in the area and feel like a bowl of white rice with Japanese style beef, chicken, pork or vegetables, this place is OK.

The food was average - ordered a oyako don and barely saw the egg...the taste is all right but nothing I would stand in line for.
Service was TERRIBLE - I assume the lady is the owner but she asked my friends and I to leave as soon as we were done eating so others could have our table - would be nice to treat your customers baby and not shoo them out the door as soon as they put the chopsticks down. For that reason, I definitely WILL NOT be back!
