What can I say about Blue Star (now, randomly, "Kishu Star") -- they're awesome. very fresh, excellent tuna (that's the way to tell if it's a good sushi restaurant, in my books).
I've only ever gotten them with delivery, mind you, so haven't visited them in person, but never been disappointed.
And now, you can get sushi with brown rice, which keeps better overnight in the fridge. -

Blue Star, Kishu Star? I've eaten at both renditions at the same location and it is consistently decent, but not great.
My last visit we had some miso soup, tuna sashimi, salmon teriyaki, BC rolls, prawn & vegetable tempura & unagi don. The dishes ranged from really good (tuna & unagi), to okay (miso soup & salmon teriyaki), to barely edible (tempuras), to really quite inedible (bc rolls).
This evening the fish was very fresh and the clear standout. I don't think I will ever go out of my way to return here but if my friends again insist on returning I could probably be convinced without too much difficulty. -

Blue Star Sushi (formerly Kishu Star) is my favourite place in the city for sushi. I have been going there for 3+ years and I have never had a bad order. It is always fresh, delicious and a good portion. I wish they had more locations!
I have ordered mostly as delivery/takeout and they have always gotten my order right. -

I've been visiting this place, and have been ordering take-out here for more than 5 years now.
This is a great place because it has consistent, good quality sushi for a fair price. I'm not saying this is the best, or the cheapest, it's just that it hits exactly that need for a sushi place you can visit on a regular basis and know what you can expect.
Service is good and friendly. Delivery is pretty quick (anywhere between 25 - 45 mins from the moment you call). -

I'm on the fence about this place... I've been here about three times and I find it MEH! I took a sort of dragon roll with tempura flakes. OK on the outside of the roll but it tasted like the whole thing was dipped in oil for way too long.
I also has some salmon nigiri and I thought the salmon wasn't too fresh.. ? My dinning partner didn't like it either, so we don't really go anymore. -

Okay Americanized sushi. Not the greatest of effort to create the rolls. Few simple ingredients make their rolls bland and flavorless. I don't recommend this place if you want authentic sushi Van is known for.

Meh. I went with my mom, who doesnt eat sushi but is a connoisseur of the bento box. She was unimpressed, except for the price. My sushi had too much mayo, and the fish didn't knock me over with freshness.
Too bad, I'm getting sick of Hon-Jin but can't find a worthy substitute. -

It seems in Vancouver that we are spoiled for choice with sushi. In Ireland, there's a pub every other door. In Vancouver, it's a sushi joint. This place is a step above the others for a few reasons.
First it gets points for location and interior. They've taken some care to make it a nice place to sit and eat. There are comfortable booths and some high tables by the bright windows that are great for people- watching on 4th Ave. In the summer they open the windows, so these seats are even more desirable! It's always clean, too.
Next is the quality of the food. It's pretty much the same items that you see all over town. But it always seems to me that there's more care taken with rolling tightly and displaying rolls attractively.
The service here has always been friendly and attentive. And the prices are comparable to other value sushi establishments. So for sitting in, Kishu Star would be my choice in this particular neighbourhood. -

Kishu Star Japanese Bistro is centrally located amidst the Fourth Ave's retail ramble. It serves typical Western-influenced Japanese fare, like California rolls, BC rolls and cheese gyoza, and more authentic fare. Kishu Star doesn't have any dedicated speciality and dishes range from the stir-fried to the raw and from cold noodles to the rice-centric.
As previously noted, Kishu Star offers good value. Even during dinner hours, bento boxes don't hover past $12.95, and that is only for the seafood one. There are ten different bento combos to choose from and they all include an assortment of rolls, a fried main (e.g. tofu teriyaki), tempura, salad, miso soup and fruit.
And for vegetarians who struggle in Japanese restaurants, there is still a decent variety from which you can choose (and it's not just limited to cucumber rolls). Party platters are also available and delivery is an option for those living within in a 3km radius. -

The place has a new sign - Blue Star Sushi - but still has Kishu Star menus inside. I showed up at 9:30PM (half an hour before close) and ordered a few things. Everyone was busy doing other things and we were just kind of in their way so when the food was ready it was just slammed down on the table in front of us amongst our somewhat dirty plates. The food was, as they say, meh. Spicy tuna sashimi was fresh with cucumber but spicy sauce tasted like thousand island dressing mixed with hot sauce...edamame had no salt...dragon roll was ok but small...salmon sashimi was the most disappointing: after looking at those fresh pieces pictured on the menu, I was sad to receive 5 discoloured, just unfrozen chunks on my plate for $7. Not once did they come by and refill our tea or even ask if we wanted anything else. I don't think I'll be going back.

i like kishu star because it serves cheap tasty sushi and it's close to my house. this place certainly doesn't produce excellent sushi, or have fantastic service, or have a great atmosphere. but it makes decent sushi for cheap.
try the house roll (the best on the 40% off menu), prawn tempura, beef teriyaki udon, and the donburi bowls. we barely ever order off the 'regular' menu. if we wanted good sushi we'd go somewhere else. the beer is also cheap at $4 for a big mug.
pay at the counter. otherwise you'll be sitting at your table forever wondering where the bill is.Listed in: kitsilano

Looking for a place to live in kits in Feb. 2008, we ended up hungry for sushi. We had that amazing restaurant in Coquitlam where the sushi are so freaking good and wanted to try for some more, somewhere else and maybe find another "worth-the-drive" great sushi place. I guess the service was ok; i'm used to over-friendly service. I gave it four stars but had to remove one star for each nigiri salmon i received that was wrinkled and dry. Note: We did not go since last summer (july 2008).
