first dim sum experience at kirin. one word: awesome (with many many exclamation marks)!!!
1. the hostess set a timeframe for us, since it was saturday rush hour dim sum time, and asked if we would be able to finish in an hour. no problemo. no wait, no fuss.
2. the service was quick. and we had service. actual service.
3. when we were done, we got hot towels to wipe our hands. that was a nice surprise for me.
4. the dim sum menu changes every few weeks. this is to accommodate for fresh ingredients. even though they did not have my favourite dim sum, the "little dragon" dumplings, i will for sure be back to try them when they are in rotation again.
this may be a new favourite dim sum place for me. -

First stop after getting off at YVR.
Dim sum on a Wed afternoon was pretty busy. Had the staples: har gow, siu mai, beancurd rolls, shark fin dumplings, and chicken-abalone steamed buns. ALL EXCELLENT. I was unsure of the reviews, but based on my experience eating dim sum in SF, LA, and HK, Kirin is one of the top places I've been. $30 out the door for 2 people, which I had no problem paying. Solid 5.
Dinner on a Saturday evening (at the Kirin West location) was okay, but nothing mind blowing. Had 1/2 a peking duck and shrimp-abalone-chicken in a fried noodle bowl. Ingredients were fresh, tasty, but just not amazing. My guess is that a family style multi-course meal would give you a better variety of tastes. Solid 3.
Neither meal set off the MSG meter (unlike New Town Bakery). Next time, I'm going back for dim sum. -

This has always been one of my favourite dim sum places and the one place I always hit up whenever I visit home. However, my last visit was different, as I would be bringing the scrutinizing and discerning taste buds of Deanna L.
DL has done nothing short of a fair share of dining both across the country and overseas, is particularly fond of all things Californian, and is certainly one who is not afraid to let you know when your grandmother's cherished chicken soup tastes like asphalt. So needless to say, after repeatedly touting the virtues of Vancouver dim sum, I was slightly nervous to finally bring her to one of my own personal favourite places.
Waves of insecurity and doubt rushed through my mind as we sat down and ordered tea for the table. Should we have gone to Fisherman's Terrace instead? Maybe I should have taken her to one of those all-you-can-eat dim sum places first, and THEN wowed her with the wonders of Kirin. Or perhaps strategically starved her for 24 hours before feeding her with dim sum so that no matter what she ate, it would be AMAZING.
As we ordered some of the usual standards, I quickly scanned the menu to see if they were offering any specials that DL might consider extraordinary; mind-blowing; anything that would justify the lofty pedestal upon which I had placed Vancouver dim sum.
Just as I neared the end of the menu, I noticed that food had started to arrive. And just as I thought I had found the perfect edible masterpiece to showcase the magnificence I had promised, I saw DL reach for a piece of har gow.
My heart stopped. The humble shrimp dumpling? Was that really going to be her first taste of Vancouver dim sum? First impressions are irrevocable, and have the power to completely make or break the fortunes of greater men than I. And now the fate of my beloved childhood cuisine rested squarely on the shoulders of this simple dish.
I nearly got out of my seat and batted the har gow out of her chopsticks, but it was too late. Her teeth made first contact, and slowly, bite by bite, the har gow disappeared into the void. First there was silence. Then the widening of the eyes. I nearly crawled under the table until I noticed that her slow, methodical chewing gently curved upwards into a soft, then growing smile. Then she started chewing faster.
She liked it! She really liked it! Dish after dish, she devoured and approved, nodding and smiling as she went. The absence of conversation due to diligence in eating would have been affirmation enough, but her final words as we left sealed the deal:
"Yes, the dim sum here is better than California."
Yes. Yes it is.

Great Dim Sum! Came here on a Saturday around 11:30 and it was very busy, good thing I had reservations. The service was great, the restaurant is very clean, and most of all, great food.
I actually like that they do not walk around with the carts and you order everything fresh. The only downside to that was, the shu mai took a really long time to come out. I ate a lot of food. The shark fin soup had a lot of flavor and was steaming hot. I liked shark fin, my first time having that. As always I enjoy shu mai, har gow, and Lo mai gai. I did not eat XLB here even though it is one of my favourites, I had another location designated for that. Everything was great, you should definitely RSVP if you come here, and expect to pay a little bit more. That is main thing I can think of to complain about, the price for dim sum is pricier than other places. I would come back for sure next time I am in Vancouver! -
Review from Alex K.
I came here on a recommendation of a friend. Unfortunately, I did not come for the dim sum.
The steamed shrimp was butterflied whole, topped with scallions and garlic, and finished with hot oil. It was so delicious, especially the ones with the roe. The liver briny tasting roe just went so well with the sweet shrimps and the hints of garlic. This was the best dish I had all night.
I didn't really like the other two dishes. The fried oyster hotpot was average at best, with large oysters and scallions in a hotpot. The fried fish and spicy eggplant was very tasty, but nothing really stood out.
The night finished with a coconut milk tapioca was soothing, cold and a great way to finish the meal.
Service was responsive and very good. Tea was kept on a hotplate, which was really cool. -

Good dim-sum place - don't forget to make reservation or the line might be long especially on the weekend.
also they will reimburse your parking fee $3 if you park at the connecting garage, just show the ticket to the waiter
They have some special dim-sum that not offered by other restaurants. -
Review from Cody S.
I am a big fan of dim sum. This is my favourite dim sum restaurant anywhere.
I really enjoy walking into a nice restaurant. Most dim sum places in Greater Vancouver are kind of tacky. This is not one of those places. The interior is very classy and the service here is impeccable and over the top. The windows are large and invite a great amount of natural light into the building. It is also great to sit around a nice table with good linen. I know, that sounds kind of elitist...but I'm far from it...its just nice to have when your drinking tea. Speaking of tea, it is some good quality.
The food is outstanding. I love the ha gau here....it is the staple of the meal and it is fantastic. The shumai, cheong fan (rice noodle wrapped around a filling), turnip cakes.....everything is great here. The prices are much higher than most other places, but, it is worth it. -
Review from Vivian Y.
Oh God, REALLY? this place was voted as one of "Vancouver's Best"?
I was silly enough to believe it - on our way from Chicago to Honolulu, we had a 6 hour layover in Vancouver airport so we spent $40 to store our luggage and get the train out of the airport ($10 a head!!) just to go eat here and sadly, I wasn't falling-off-my-chair-amazed at the food.
it was good - don't get me wrong, but I've had FAR better dim sum!
Service was kinda bad for a high-end Chinese restaurant. (at a noodle house, I could care less about service) but when you're paying $50 for two people at dim sum - I expected much, much more. -

This place is just okay...maybe the other Kirin locations are better for dim sum but I didn't taste anything spectacular. The prices are slightly higher compared to other dim sum places but it's in a nice location near the Richmond Centre and has a very nice decor. Service is fast and a little abrupt as it is with all Chinese dim sum places - high end or not! That's just the way it is so don't expect anything more or less. LOL.
The har gow (shrimp dumplings) are a staple that has to be ordered at all dim sum was pretty bland and disappointing. I didn't like the dumpling skin as it was a little too thick. The shrimp inside was a bit heavily seasoned. The char siu bao (steamed pork bun) was very average. The soup dumpling was sitting in quite the greasy broth. Not my fav...too bad.
Turn down Saba Avenue to park in a parkade. It's $3 for 2 hours at a pay station so just bring the ticket in with you (the pay station is right in front of the restaurant's reception area) and get it redeemed when you get the bill.
This is a very busy place so if you come around 10 am then you'll probably get a table if you don't have a large party but otherwise, make reservations! -
Review from Stephen Y.

For me, if I wanted high quality Chinese cuisine, dim sum or dinner, this is the best. Yes, it is pricey, but they use quality ingredients, great service every single time and I haven't left dissapointed. This is not the place where you order fried rice or your fried noodles. Save that stuff for less stuffy cafes or mom & pop shops. This is a place where you go for dinner and get fresh seafood, splurge on some dishes you don't normally order and leave happy, albeit a little lighter in the wallet.
Ambiance (4/5) - Upscale, tidy and classy. Can't go wrong here. As mentioned in other reviews, a popular place for family celebrations. Don't show up in sweats for dinner.
Food (4.5/5) - These are the dishes that I would recommend for dinner : Fresh crab, done either in ginger and garlic with noodles as a base or get it fried in garlic, salt and pepper. Their lobster prepared the same way is great as well. I've had the chance to enjoy their King Crab specially prepared in three different ways: Steamed legs with garlic and green onion, fried with assortment of spices and finally fried rice inside the shell of the crab with shredded crab meat. Mmmmm. As well, if you order ahead of time, reserve a wintermelon soup in the cold seasons. It's a big serving, it'll give a table of six roughly 2.5 bowls of soup and it's quite filling. It contains prawns, mushrooms, salted meat, chicken, fish maw and of course, wintermelon. The best thing about it is that it's all prepared inside a wintermelon. Highly recommended.
Dim sum wise, it has all your standard dumplings and usual rice rolls, but their deep fried taro root is the best. Proper amount of batter on the outside, nicely textured, and the taro is cooked to the proper temperature so that's it's still moist but not super starchy. This is a guy that generally hates taro, but I freaking love this.
Service (4.5/5) - Extremely polite, most of them can speak Cantonese, Mandarin and English. Very attentive service as I am a stickler for places that don't change my dishes often enough when I am having shellfish or any poultry dish that contains bones. Tea is always warm, thanks to tea warmers with tea-light candles. My recommendation, come with 4-6 people and make reservations for at least 5. Why? So you get a slightly larger table with a lazy suzanne!Listed in: Dim Sum - Noisy deliciousness!

3.5 stars. Kirin Richmond (better than) Kirin city square (better than) Kirin downtown. Same menu, same food, but better execution at this location. Everything tasted like the enhanced version of the the downtown and cambie locations. Calamari was crispier and tastier. The spareribs were more tender and flavorful, the egg tarts had crustier crusts and eggier fillings. Even the servers had better attitudes. They're opening up another location in Richmond and I'm curious as to whether the new location will be superior to this one.

Great ambiance, free parking and good service. Free XO sauce to boot!
The food is very good but we found a few dishes a bit lackluster and disappointing given the price (relative to nearby competition). For instance, the sauce in some of our dishes were still congealed. Eating chunks of jello-like sauce wasn't too enticing.
I still prefer the consistent quality at Red Star, but Kirin is a perfectly acceptable alternative (hopefully you won't get the congealed sauce like we did). -
Review from Orian I.
So, first of all I'd like to say, this whole preference to ordering off the menu and not having carts thing is really weird. The whole notion that it's fresher when they individually steam or fry up for you seems silly and it takes an element away that I was looking for.
I lived in Hong Kong and carts/large trays were always the way to go even in the fanciest places. the gritty loud noisy talking from neighbouring tables, formica tables, crappy lighting, with surly waiters that would give you dagger eyes if you didn't take something from the cart. that's the way to do it.
that being said, the food was very good. The chashu bao was incredibly good, as was the sticky rice and fried tofu with pork. The scallop/shrimp thing with row on it was exceptionally good. The meat balls were strange and spongy and the flavor was weird. everything was perfectly cooked, but at that price i really shouldn't expect less.
This place is most deff. a take your mom out to Sunday brunch kind of place. after 5 dishes ordered we racked up a bill of over $60 with just the 3 of us.
So, here's the run down. if you are not Chinese of any sort be aware you will be stared at the entire time, and the service will be quite terrible. the place it self is beautiful. I would recommend either arriving early or making reservations. which we did.
This isn't what I wanted, but it was good. just be aware of these things, also I'd take someone who can speak either Mandarin or Cantonese.Listed in: My trip across the boarder-…

We are in the city for a few days and decided to go here based on positive Yelp reviews. We were the last party to show up on a Saturday night, but there were still several other tables already there. Don't know if dim sum is just a lunch offering; we had some pretty mainstream dishes although we saw things like shark fin soup (which I won't order due to ecological reasons) and snake meat. Quite an impressive menu!
It took us a while to order since their menu is so extensive, but we wound up with lemon chicken (1/2 order), kung pao chicken, tofu with straw mushrooms, and chow mien with vegetables. Everything came out very quickly and was quite good. About the only thing we missed was a spicy dish; we mistakenly thought the kung pao chicken was; it was quite good but a little bland. -

7 of us went for Alaska King Crab...13 lbs. 3 courses including Garlic Steamed; Stir fried body with premium soy sauce and finally crab rice with portugese sauce. The 1st 2 courses were the best part of our evening, good but not great.
Stir fried pea shoot actually became steamed pea shoot...overdone veggies is my worst nightmare.
Steamed live rock cod was ok, not great. The meat taste a little on the mushy side.
Generic dessert red bean soup.
I would say it's not worth your money. Food hit and miss. -
Review from J K.
The first Sunday we came here it was past 3 pm. No dice, they close at 5 pm. The second time we came at noon. But again, no dice. No reservation = no dim sum. The third time we came here we had a reservation and we ate like kings. The food is top notch. The atmosphere is fancy. Very clean. Good value.
But beware, their dim sum is not the kind where you grab grub off carts. You order from a menu. I guess it's like tapas. The rolling carts of goodness are most of the reason I go to dim sum, so I probably won't be back. Plus, 99% of the items on the menu are not easily imagined by my non-Chinese mind -- hence my preference for the food on the carts. -

Nice and clean restaurant with a few tanks of impressively sized alaska king crab, and of course the generic lobster and crab. We came here door dim sum as a recommendation from our hotel concierge. All in all...not bad. Some of the dishes were very western influenced but others were quite unique. Would come here again. Couldn't believe how many ppl were there on a Tuesday afternoon for dim sum...I guess ppl don't work or go to school here in Vancouver...jk :)
Found the staff to be a bit hit and miss...one of the waitresses Eva was very good but there were quite a few duds...can't remember their names....anyhow...it'd a Chinese restaurant...not expecting to go there for service...just wanted some good food after a long day of traveling. -

Great place for dim sum in Richmond. My mom and I enjoyed eating here with her friends and everything was solid. I wish I could remember everything we ordered (my uncles overordered like usual).
The only thing that stood out was the mango pudding - instead of being in a small dish they made it in a fish mold had real pieces of mango in it, not mango powder like most places and plated it like the double fish symbol for good luck and prosperity. Double fish, double good for me.Listed in: Vancouver

This is without doubt a premier Chinese cuisine experience. We were recently treated to a multi course dinner there and everything was perfection. The staff is phenomenal and when we ordered fresh black cod, they deboned it and served it within minutes.
Not too many westerners but their English is excellent and they really go out of their way to make sure you understand what you are ordering.I know it's super expensive but there's no question that if you can afford it, it's a fantastic food experience. -
Review from Yumi A.
My family drives 5 hours and crosses the border to Canada JUST to eat here. Even though we live on the west coast, there are no Cantonese restaurants that come even CLOSE to the quality of Kirin.
Dim sum is top notch. Fresh ingredients that you can actually taste, quality XO sauce, and no greasy queasy feeling that so many dim sum places give me at the end of a filling meal. Also, ordering from the menu is a much better system than the carts. Who wants to eat har gao that's been sitting around for an hour?!
Dinner gets even better. Their special double boiled black bird soup is amazing, as well as their Beijing Kao Ya (sp?). Crisp with just a thin layer of fat underneath the skin. Ahhh I am drooling just thinking about it. It is unfortunate that now I live in NY and am soooo far away from this lovely establishment. -
Review from kath r.
Wow. This is probably one of the most stylish dim sum restaurants I've eaten at in a while. The decor is subtle, but fantastic: slate greys, deep blues and strong (but not garish) reds.
The place buzzed with people, voices and the usual chatter that accompanies Sunday dim sum. We went at prime time (with a reservation) and were seated as soon as we walked in.
We ate fabulously. The prices were slightly higher than your usual dim sum place but the charged atmosphere, great selection and (relative) speedy delivery of dishes made it all worth it.
I would have like to have seen carts but settled for tanks of crustaceans and fish. I'd definitely recommend this place; especially if you're looking for a little swank and flash with your BBQ pork buns and taro root cake. -
Review from helen f.
IMO, this Kirin is even better than the Vancouver Kirin!
You can use the same trick to call ahead to get on waiting list, so the wait is shorter :)
Try the dimsum that come out on trays, unique and tasty :) -
Review from Thu N.
I'm taking a while to go through the Dim Sum circuit of Vancouver but this was second on my list of places to try!! I was here on Boxing day where it was surprisingly not full! I guess this review is a little biased since I didn't see the menu or the bill. So I'm judging purely on taste! Every dish that was ordered was so good. I especially like the spring rolls with salty egg which I had before. All the regular dumplings, chicken feet, rolls were really really good too.
The kicker is the mango pudding at the end - that was possibly the best mango pudding I've ever had. All in all, my favourite dim sum place...I guess until I have to pay the bill ! -
Review from Joyce J.
A decent tourist trap restaurant (never thought you would hear that, right?)
In fact, if we are comparing with only tourist trap restaurants, I might just give this place five stars for its solid performance. So many tourist trap fall short of decent, while costing an arm and a leg, but this place lived up to the praises (for the most part) that I read in other Yelp reviews.
The dim sum here is much better than in Seattle. The restaurant is clean and the service was pleasant. The food came really fast and was tasty and well-executed. I left the place feeling satisfied and the meal was not too pricey.
Overall, I find this a safe option for tourists who want to sample the Asian food in Richmond. -
Review from Anne B.
Had high hopes set after hearing friends rave about Kirin. I wouldn't say I was disappointed, but wasn't impressed either. The food was definitely fresh, but it was missing that wow factor.
Price wasn't bad, party of 9 and it was ~$15 a person. Probably $1-2 more than I'm used to, but for freshness I guess I'm ok with it.
Ambiance was nice. Reminded me of an upscale hotel restaurant, servers dressed up.
I'll go back again for a visit, but may try out some other places too just for comparison. -
Review from miss y.
We loved this one! We got there at 1:30pm on a Satureday. It was stil very crowded and we still needed to wait for 45 minutes. Thank god it was very worth it.
We ordered XLB, shao-mai, dumpling in the soup, chicken feet in abalone broth, etc. All are really tasty! The fried items are prepared perfectly. All dumplings have juices inside. Broth was flavorful. I actually think it's better than the Koi Palace in the bay area :) Two thumbs up! -
Review from Kellee K.
We stumbled on Kirin Seafood and boy were we lucky. The dining room was full when we were seated and we were drooling over all the offerings. It was hard to choose what to order, but we managed...
We started with wonton soup and crab claw with minced prawn. Both were great and well executed.
Then for our entrees we had sweet and sour chicken and peking duck. The duck is served in two courses, the first was crispy skin and crepes, and the second was lettuce wraps. I adored this preparation. There was no fat to work around, you just got to enjoy all the best parts. The chicken was quiet good, as well. -
Review from Christopher J.
Mmmm good. This is one of my favorite places for dim sum in Vancouver. Top 3 for sure. This is why
1) Great atmosphere and location. It is what dim sum should be: loud with lots of chatter. You order both from the menu and people come around with little stuff. Lots of servers. They have ones that both deliver the food and server your table.
2) Great variety and tasty. Mango pudding with tapioca is very unique. It's baked so that the top is a sweet crust with almond filling. They have a really good chinese donut wrapped with rice roll. It comes in a long plate which is really unique. Usually it is sprinkled with shredded pork. Everything is quite tasty. I was a little disappointed with the chicken feet. Not the best that i have tasted. Maybe i have just too high standards for this place.
3) Finally the price isn't that bad. You should expect to spend $15/person. But this is well worth it.
If you like dim sum this is a place to check out that consistently delivers. -
Review from Sui B.
Dinner menu: I attended a wedding dinner here, so guilty for saying this, but the shark fin soup was great.. i sipped it, felt enormous guilt, proceeded to tell everyone at the table of how they kill these poor sharks as their soup sat midway between their throat and their stomach uncomfortably. The abalone was too rough. My favorite came in the very end "sesame tung yuan" and the taro jello.. OMG..
Dim sum menu: shrimp dumpling was good, but not great, pork bun was good, not great, egg tart was fresh and yum -
Review from Katie F.
I've officially found my favorite place for salt and pepper squid in the city - amazing light batter, perfect amount of heat/pepper and non-rubbery squid. Love it!
I continue to come here about once a month. Amazing shirmp dumplings, shrimp and chive rice rolls, etc... for dim sum. Egg tarts aren't on the menu but they will come around periodically.
Their dinner menu is very good. (It's nice that you can also order dinner items during dim sum if you wish). The spicy prawn dish, the Kirin chow mein, the black cod/sablefish in the bean sauce and of course the squid are some of my faves.
Service and presentation continue to be solid. I've dropped it a star because I've definitely had some disappointing dishes (almond crusted shrimp and one of the fried rice dishes come to mind). Overall still one of my top picks for Chinese in the GVR.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Come here for Dim Sum!!!! Located on the 2nd floor. You'll have many varieties of dim sum selections. All of them are delicious. It's always crowded and loud even on the weekdays.
I find that parking is a bit of a problem. Wear your Guccis, Pradas, Chanels and eat your "heart" out. Don't expect the service to be good
as most places in US. -

My second dim sum in a weekend but am equally impressed with the food. Definitely slightly more expensive but quality has always been consistent and the decor was more ornate.
We didn't have any reservation on a Sunday morning but hostess managed to give us a table as long we finished within the hour.
My only few complaints: the rice roll with chinese donut was good but a bit too greasy and not fluffy enough. They ran out of Mango pudding at 11 am on a Sunday.
My brother, the dim sum connoisseur loved pretty much everything else, scallop dumplings, WU kok (deep fried taro dumpling), seafood with 2 kinds of noodles.
I even feel that this branch has better quality than the one on Cambie. -

Good news - My grandpa went to vacation in Vancouver, and all I got was two bbq pork buns from Kirin Seafood Restaurant. It tasted good -nice and juicy.
Bad news - I think I been poisoned with MSG. -

This restaurant has the best customer service! We had our wedding here and I can not say enough about the staff and their service. The coordinator did his absolute best in accommodating all of our needs and ensuring the night went smoothly. They are very busy but took the time to satisfy our requests and check ins before the big day, including storage and last minute decisions. The negotiations and pricing went very well. Kirin at all locations have a great reputation. The parking is ample, the renovations are beautiful, and the food quality is superb. I absolutely love the lobster and fish dishes. I highly recommend it.

Craving good dim sum during our trip to Seattle & Vancouver, we came to Kirin in Richmond early on a Monday morning (10:30am or so) so no waiting was necesary. The place is very clean and more upscale than your typical dim sum restaurant. Nice decor, spacious, and well kept. I'm sure many wedding banquets are held here.
You order your food from a menu, not from pushcarts weaving around the tables. Personally i like ordering from the carts - that is part of the fun and experience of having dim sum. Plus, as other posts have noted, the food selection is not as extensive as other dim sum places.
That being said, the quality of the dim sum here is superb. All the food was fresh, hot, and simply delicious. We ordered the typical dim sum fare, and all were excellent. The shrimp in their fun and haw gau were fresh and crisp, not mushy or overcooked. And the service was top notch. An extra set of chopsticks is provided to be used as "community chopsticks", to be used instead of using your own set to grab the food. Kirin even provides a warm, moist towelette at the end of your meal, nice touch!
As you would expect, the place is expensive for dim sum, but if you want quality dim sum, its well worth it.
Taste-wise, the dim sum at Kirin definitely rivals dim sum you'll find in LA, SF, NY or even HK! -

Kirin is expensive for a cheap person like me, but it was worth the price. I went there for dim sum. They don't have the cute carts, but I don't think it fits with the atmosphere of the restaurant. I would make it a point to come back next time I am on the west cost.

This review may not be an accurate or comprehensive one since we were here for a wedding banquet. The staff was really attentive and helpful. Something you find in a high class restaurant. They served every dish by showing you the dish and then dishing it out into individual servings before giving it to you. Your drinks were always topped off. You turn away and turn back and presto, the cup was full. The food was above average but that the best I have had. I didn't have that orgasmic feeling. I cannot comment on the price but I am sure it on the higher end. The restaurant was very nicely decorated and everything was high class. I would like to come back and see what their dim sum and a la cart dinner has to offer.

I came to Kirin on the high ratings from fellow yelpers and the early hours dim sum is offered. This place is extremely well maintained, clean, and fancier than other dim sum joints. The dim sum at Kirin is of the utmost, premium quality. Although the dim sum is a bit on the more pricey side. The dishes are delish and top notch! Kirin appears to be a great place to make a good impression if it's a business client lunch, treating the family out or wedding banquet.
