We came for a very special soup, but didn't realize that you had to order days in advance for them to make it.  We didn't know that and the jibber jabbering in Mandarin between two strong willed women continued until one of them conceded.  We gave in after trying to see if they could make it specially for us.  We didn't know, but it was a good suggestion to come here anyways.   Apparently the soup can give you energy.

    Solid Cantonese food,
We had the Gong Hay Fat Choy soup which had pretty much every innard you could think of cooked up in a very rich and uniquely asian flavoured broth.  Probably not for everyone, not for me. I don't eat that stuff, but pretended to love it cause, I just love her so much.  You see, if you love someone, you'll do anything for that person.

In this case, it was trying to stomach this delicious soup, that I was simply incapable of appreciating.

Besides that, every other dish was very good and solid.  Didn't realize that my nephew had never had soft tofu before.  "Well! (with an exhasperated sigh of relief) Now theres something new!"  I poked fun at him on this.

Veggies for the daughter unit and the meal was eaten in relative silence.  Mamma san was tired and it was a stressfull day for her, for us. So in a way it was nice to wind down here at Kings.  We even got the corner room (that nobody seems to want).

BTW. If you happen to need to poop after your meal and venture downstairs to the mens washroom.  You'll notice there isn't a door for the mens stall.... So you kinda can't go unless you are despareate and there's no other choice.

Hoping they'll have that fixed someday.. Yep, they gotta get that changed.

King's Chinese Restaurant  is located 4488 Main Street (cross-street 29th Ave). We were gathering for lunch after Church. Initially wanting to go to Kirin (on Cambie), but decided to give this place a try after reading some decent reviews on Urbanspoon (88%) and Yelp (3.5 stars).... To be honest I felt a little ripped off.

King's is very much a dive. If driving by it could easily be missed if you are expecting a grand facade. However, the bold orange hippie paint job will definitely distract you. The place is small and extremely busy - kids, servers and furniture collide. With its "modest" decor, it somewhat reminds me of a first generation Chinese owned restaurant in the early 70s/80s - sort of like Kam Gook Yuen in Chinatown - Beat up and requires a reconstructive face lift. The pictures are a bit deceiving because it actually looks a lot better on camera than in person...

Solid Cantonese it is not; Cheap eats it definitely is - $2.30 - 4.75 per dish. Where else can you feed 7 hungry mouths, close to 20 plates for $80 (including tips)? That was very cheap lunch.

    Proportionately sized. Greasy. Nothing special.

Shrimp Dumpling - soggy and wet. The skin was thick, mushy and completely fell apart.

A lot of the food that were brought out didn't look entirely appetizing. Some were decent and tasted not bad. You have to pick your battles.

The Siu Mais (Pork Dumplings) were a bit tough... The Soup Dumpling XLB in the background was soggy and thick skinned. We joked that perhaps they were made from cardboard pulp!

I think the best was perhaps the pan fried shrimp eggplant.

At the end of the day - you get what you pay for. Now, if it tasted both amazing and cheap ex. Foundations or New Szechuan; then this would be a considered a hidden gem. Unfortunately it was not.

    Cash only
    Street Parking
    Cheap eats

First, I would like to qualify this review by stating something many people may find to be borderline sacrilege.

I don't really like dim sum.

It's kind of all the same to me.  Sure, there are grades of goodness, but it gets kind of old kind of fast for me.  Of course, that's all a matter of preference, and so if that makes me a bad person, or ruins any small shred of credibility that I once had, then so be it.

Now, I will continue to qualify my review with a further statement.

We weren't planning on going here.

In fact, we were planning on going to Good Choice, as recommended by my Yelp buddy, only to find that as of March they were closed every Tuesday, and it was Tuesday.  We (my friends and I, not including my Canadian Yelp buddy) ended up wandering up and down the street (Fraser), venturing into random bubble tea shops and asking if there was good dim sum around.  One guy, finally directed us here.

It looked pretty good when we first walked in, a lot of older Chinese folks there, and it was pretty crowded, which made me hopeful.  Unfortunately, no one amongst our party spoke a lick of Cantonese, so we were largely ignored after we were seated.  They have a little check box menu thing you can order from, and the prices were pretty good.  However, in the rush of the lunch crowd, the kitchen lost our order (giving them the benefit of the doubt), so it took them a while just to get us the 6-7 dishes we ordered.  On the plus side, it meant we ate less.

Overall, the food was pretty good.  Relatively speaking it's a decent price per plate for dim sum and the quality was on par with the better dim sum places I've been to.  However, service was marginal at best.  Maybe they're just understaffed, maybe I just need to learn Cantonese.

Good value. $2.25 per selection. I spent 8 bucks and had enough to take home a snack.

Wow it took me like 20 minutes to find this place on google maps! I can't believe I'm the first to write about it. either.

I went for dim sum here once and it was an interesting experience. I walked by this place with a friend and was like "this place looks more like a bomb shelter!" Sounds like a good time to me! Se we went in and the place was PACKED!!! When you first got in they ask you if you want your own table or if you mind sharing, we were starving so we decided to share a table. Then noticed we were the only non-Chinese people in there, a little threatening at first, with about a million eye balls fixated on us but once we sat down everyone went back to what they were doing. They sat us down next to this old couple who were in their 70s-80s(they were impressed by my chopstick skills!)

Service was kind of slow but it was expected because they were at capacity. We got there at the right time too, a few other groups of people came in after we did and some left because they weren't down with table sharing-they missed out!

This place is way too small and there is too much going on for them to be wheeling around food carts so it's menu only. The menu is pretty large but nothing too out of the ordinary for dim sum.

We ordered the shrimp shui mai, baked pork buns, spicy garlic pork(our table mates liked that we ordered this) and a few other items. In the end our eyes were bigger then our stomachs so we ended up taking like half of it home. For about 5-6 dishes we paid $26-I think that was including tip. Everything was dirt cheap and full of greasy goodness.

I really need to get back here at some point and bring a serious appetite so I can try the rest of the menu, probably not all at once but you get the idea.

ALSO note, I think it's cash only
