As much as I enjoy trying new foods and spicing things up, there are times when I am just looking for old faithful. Yes, good ol' Canadian Chinese food. And when I'm craving chicken balls in that mystery orange/red sauce, King Wah is the most convenient place to start.

It's also one of the best.

King Wah is located literally at the end of my street. It is less than a two minute walk and worth every step. The interior is charming and classic Chinese Restaurant; low lighting, giant goldfish, dragons. It's cool to look at for a while and I'm sure little kids would get a kick out of the fish tank.

The service is usually very quick and the food has always been tasty and reasonably portioned. I plan on eventually checking out some of the more authentic dishes, but if they are as good as the sweet and sour chicken and spare ribs then I am sure I am in for a treat!

I was expecting good things when I decided to order some take out from the King Wah tonight.  A friend told me he always went there and it was the best Chinese food in Halifax.

I ordered the Sauteed Sliced Pork with Chili Pepper and the Lo Mein with Oyster Sauce.  The food was wonderfully hot when I got it home and I love the take out dishes they use, much better then the usual styrofoam

When I had ordered the pork, she warned me that it was authentic Chinese and spicy.  I assured her In enjoyed authentic Chinese and loved spicy food.  I can't say if it was authentic or not, but it certainly was not spicy, the pork was tough and bland.  It was lacking both heat and seasoning.  Probably the blandest thing I have ever had in a Chinese restaurant, it really had no flavor.  Would have never known it was pork form the flavour.

The lo mein noodles were more of the same.  Even putting soya sauce on them could not save them.  They were just bland, no flavour what so ever.

I don't know if I just made bad choices in my selection or maybe it was an off night, but I will probably never return to find out.

This is the one Chinese Restaurant in Halifax that reminds me of Montreal.   The food is delicious - with lots of authentic dishes as well as some of those "Canadian Chinese" favorites too.   The service is friendly and ....well, what more could you ask for.

This past New Year's Eve we called the day before and ordered lots of dishes for take out and they were very efficient.  The only drawback was that our food was ready for pick up at 4:30 - a little earlier than we wished and some of the dishes had more green peppers than the main (chicken/beef).

All said and done though, it's still as good as it was the first time we went, years agol.

I think the first time I ever had authentic Chinese food (as opposed to "Canadian" Chinese food) it was here, at King Wah. That was a long time ago, but I remember the incredible flavours and the freshness of the food, and since that time, I've never looked at another chicken ball covered in gooey red sauce.

King Wah is still one of the stalwarts of Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine in Halifax, and their longevity may be due, in part, to their approach to the food: fresh, healthy ingredients with few preservatives and cooking methods that use as little oil as possible.

The restaurant is small, casual and neighbourhood-y. And, just in case you can't remember the name of your favourite dish, the menu features photos of all the food to help jog your cloudy memory.

Best idea: go with a few friends and order several dishes to share.

King Wah is a great little restaurant. I have gone here on a few occasions. We always get the Szechuan noodles here, the hotter the better.
The food here is hot and service good. It is a great place if you do not want to venture to far downtown.   I have not had delivery from here , so I can not comment on that.

I tried King Wah after reading favourable reviews but didn't really find that the meal delivered to my house stood up to the praise Yelpers have laid on this establishment.

Delivery took about 45-50 minutes, slightly longer than they said it would. We gobbled everything up like hungry little monkeys, but our chowing down was due to hunger more than gluttony. The food was bland, and not very exciting. Tonight finds me still searching for a good Chinese restaurant in Halifax...
