Review from Liz B.
I tried Sura first, and although it was tasty, it sure wasn't authentic. We walked by King Sejong Restaurant, and I thought any restaurant named after the king who invented Hangul (the Korean alphabet) should be good, and I was right. My husband was intending to order ohjingoh bokum, and I wanted to order the jjajjangmyun, but then we spied the lunch specials. I switched my order to bibimbap, and my husband went with the jjajjangmyun instead.
As others have said, they don't provide a lot of banchan, but the kimchee was at least decently spicy and flavorful. My bibimbap was tasty enough, and they included sesame oil in it, which many Korean restaurants neglect to do in the US, a big pet peeve of mine.
The service was good, and the restaurant atmosphere was a bit divey, but isn't that how it always is? The best food sometimes comes from a hole-in-the-wall restaurant.
So if I were in LA, I'd probably rate this a 4-star place, but that's relative to being surrounded by a community of Korean restaurants. Being that this place is in Victoria with a smaller community of Koreans, I have to rate this a 5-star. It's authentic, and it doesn't break the bank. Nice. -

Victoria, BC
King Sejong was my first time trying really authentic Korean food. The inside looks like a bit of a run down cafe. They keep it fairly clean, but it could really use some renovations. I tried one of the lunch specials, a spicy noodle dish with sides. At first the food was very challenging to my North American palate, but bite after bite I kept feeling the need to go back for more. By my second visit, I was finding the food quite addictive, similar to good Japanese food in that you're left feeling full but light and healthy after eating it. If you're a bit of an adventurous eater and like bold flavours that are outside the North American box, definitely try King Sejong.

The best Korean food in the downtown area.
Although this place is nestled snugly on Yates street right off of Douglas, it provides an Asian cuisine that seems to be sorely lacking in the area. Yes, there is Koryo Korean fast food in the food court at Bay Centre Mall, but if you're looking for a plethora of authentic and delicious Korean food, King Sejong is where it's at.
As of my visit today, they have greatly expanded their menu with more options, and more pictures.
Some options to consider:
"Bu Dae Jigae": it's a hot pot of assorted meat, kimchi (yummy!), and other vegetables. Ask for an egg on top!
"Jia Jiang Myun": a black bean noodle dish that will not disappoint, highly recommended for people who enjoy Chinese noodle dishes
"Sullung Tang": rich clear beef broth with green onions, this is a favorite for people looking for something simple and hot on a cold day
All entrees come with side dishes, including the side dish of the day. If you run out, you can always ask for more at no charge.
It doesn't look like much in terms of storefront or interior, but the service and food are hard to beat. It's a gem for Korean food for the long-term. -

Seriously some of the best Korean food I've ever had (and I've been to Korea!)! Its authentic, delicious and pretty affordable (for Victoria, at least).
My only complaints are:
-The side dishes are really lacking. We got 3 total (kimchi, bean sprouts and fish cake). I'm used to 8-10.
-Its not exactly a "pretty" place to go eat. Its never a deal breaker for me but keeping a good appearance can be appealing.
Whenever I visit Victoria, I will eat here at least once! -

I love this place! I've been to Korea, too. I fell in love with bulgogi there. Well, not literally. I mean we didn't elope or anything. But I almost felt like we did when I went here.
