KOD is the King of Donair.   Their donair meat is spiced right and has the perfect texture.

For me, not being from Nova Scotia, a donair has garlic tahini sauce and not the famous Halifax sweet sauce.  That said, it's still a fantastic sandwich.
If you are a fan of the sweet sauce then you'll love the KOD's donairs.

If you had ever tried Tony's Donair in Ottawa on Bank St a couple doors down from Barrymores ... you'll recognize the tast of the donair meat at KOD.

I ordered from King of Donair tonight.  I was told they make good pizza ... I adore pizza!

I called about 9:30pm and was asked to hold.  No problem.  I could hear she had set the phone down ... and then forgot about it.  I stayed on the line for about five minutes and then hung up.  I called back a few times but the line was busy.  Finally I got through about ten minutes later.  The fella who answered the phone sounded confused.

I ordered a small bacon double cheeseburger pizza (tomato sauce, hamburger, bacon, tomatoes, onions and cheddar and mozz cheese) with no onions.  There were no onions (yay!) but there were also no tomatoes.  Huh?

Since I'm in a hotel, I asked for napkins.  When it arrived, there were plates and forks but no napkins, though it was written on the bill.

I was told it would take 30 to 40 minutes for it to get to me ... it took over an hour.

The pizza itself was small ... smaller than I expected given the cost ($10).  Despite no tomatoes and the fact it was kind of cold, it was okay, not great.  On the plus side, it wasn't the least bit greasy.

I wouldn't be inclined to order from there again.

King Of Donair is the second best pizza shop on pizza corner, second not because it's pizza is any less appealing than the Sicilian, but because the location is incredibly cramped, tiny and a little dingy.

The shop is usually not as crowded as the Sicilian, but your wait time is usually just as long. A nice thing about this shop is they usually have a little bit more variety of toppings, but you're also more likely to see a slice that's been sitting a long (loooooooooooooooooooong) time.

If you're not feeling interested in waiting in the lineup that is spilling out the Sicilian's doors, give K.O.D. a try. It's not as bright and feels a little dirty, but the pizza is basically just as good.

Truthfully I'm not a Donair fan. Apparently, this recipe originated in Greece, but I've never seen it on a menu in Montreal or Toronto with large Greek communities and plenty of Greek restaurants.  This seems to be a very Nova Scotian treat - I use the term loosely, because in my world, meat needs a savory sauce and donairs come complete with the sweetest white sauce ever.

My daughter's first apartment while going to Dalhousie was over King of Donair and perhaps the smell continually wafting through the floorboards did it, or perhaps working there part time. I'm not sure, but whatever it is, it's still her favorite Donair shop in town. I stick to a small order of fries, just to keep her company.
