It's a really great deal if you go there with a voucher. I bought 3 vouchers worth $40  for $20 each, and have been to this restaurant using the vouchers twice now. Both times I and the rest of my party were pleasantly surprised by the extremely friendly and polite service, the reasonable portion sizes and authentic taste of the food. The restaurant looks a little shabby from the outside and has been empty or near-empty both times we went, but the experiences I had from the food and service were very good. The paneer dishes are my favourite, but we also tried a dessert made from cottage cheese that was very tasty, and the pakoras and samosas make delicious appetizers.

Without a voucher I would say the value of the restaurant is about average, but with a voucher there's no question this is a steal! Probably the most memorable reason for us to come back is the service: the waiter has been the same young man for us both times, and he's always smiling, checking on us for water refills, and making conversation with us. I feel like I'm treated very well here. I'll be going back again!

I actually feel bad writing a lukewarm review when the people here seemed so nice.  We didn't even know this restaurant existed until we saw the Groupon Now and realized it was on the way home.  Located on Hastings near Gilmore, a busy corridor, it is easy to miss this restaurant.

Groupon had a deal. $19 for 1 appetizer and 2 entrees, which sounds pretty darn good, especially if you are hungry, like East Indian food, and/or looking for a deal in this end of town.  In our case all of the above applied so we decided to give it a try.

We arrived around 6:00pm and were the only people in the restaurant and were promptly seated.  I presented our voucher and we were informed that because we had the voucher rice was not included, which was fine with us.

We ordered the chicken pakora, naan, basmati rice, butter chicken, and the mixed tandoori grill.  They gave us complimentary chips with what seemed like some sweet/spicy chutney. The food  tasted pretty good, especially the butter chicken--not too creamy and it had delicate flavours that went well with the fluffy basmati rice and not-too-thick naan.  It was presented simply and what seemed like traditional homecooked style.  The restaurant is very casual, which was fine with us.

The only thing keeping this restaurant from being a solid 4-5 stars is the value.  The bill came up to $15 on top of my $19 voucher price. In the end that is $34 for two people, which seems like a lot considering the portion sizes and casualness of the restaurant, and especially considering that this was with a deal voucher that I had purchased.  The regular prices were around $13.99 per entree and includes the rice ($3.50 if you use the voucher).  I can lay part of the blame on the dreaded HST, but I think in order for King Mahal to take off in this area of town they have to forgo these deals and just stick to a value-priced menu.  I see that they have a $9.99 buffet at lunch M-F, and that to me sounds pretty good.

I really believe in supporting the smaller, local businesses in Burnaby and I am hoping that this restaurant is here to stay. The food was good, and the service was friendly.  If this place was more budget friendly and in the $20 range for two people I can see an increase in numbers.

1st time ordering for take away.
    veg pekoras - awesome!!!!
butter chicken - watery, lacked flavor I  suspect they were low on butter chicken sauce so they added water.
lamb sisk kabob - horrible, so minced it had the consistency of mush cat food.
rice & naan - were good.

I wanted to like this mom and pop place but it was really not that good.

If you are looking for an authentic Indo-Canadian experience, look no farther.  This simple, small, family -run restaurant delivers Northern Indian homestyle curries for all palettes, from vegetarian to carnivore.  Service is swift and polite, genuine and interested in your comfort and enjoyment of the meal.  The food is also not oversalted, as many curries often are, so you are in control of your sodium intake.  The butter chicken was so lovely I couldn't stop myself from finishing the dish!  Support your local community - visit King Mahal if you live in North Burnaby or are just passing through.

One thing really great about Burnaby Heights is the sheer number of restaurants in such a small area.  Decided to give this place a try since it looked nice and shiny on the inside.

Parking is available (1h) on Hastings after 6pm.  There is also a free parking lot at Pender and Gilmore.

Service was excellent.  The waiter kept checking on us and giving us what  we needed.  When my buddy wanted hot water, he promptly started up a kettle.

Fish pakora - not too oily, but also a bit dry.  I was comparing this to the one at Dhaka Fish and Biryani, unfortunately the other place is better.  The chutney here is good though.

Lamb curry - very good.  Could use a bit more meat though, as there was too much sauce.

Chicken masala - meat was a bit on the dry side, but this is to be expected of chicken in general.  Again, the sauce was a bit excessive.

The rice that came with these dishes were good, with a light herbal taste.

Dinner was not the cheapest at $41 before tip for 2 people, but the value wasn't bad for the quality of the food and service.

It's simple and good.  Lunch Buffett includes Naan bread and chai tea.  They have a quality buffet vs. quantity buffet.  This is good value for less than $10.00.  The tandoori and butter chicken is particularly good and so is their pudding.   The owner used to be the head chef at Saffron, so if you loved the Saffron on Kingsway of the past, come here.

We went to King Mahal because it was close to home and I had a groupon.  We were pleasantly surprised by the great food and excellent service.  The portion sizes were generous and although the decor was pretty basic, the place achieves a nice  and calm ambiance.  We had the mixed grill and the tandoori chicken - both good choices with a good portion of meat and veggies served on a hot skillet.  I would like to try their curreys next.  Very full glass of house red wine for only $3.99.

Delicious Indian food run by a father-son team; a welcome addition to the Burnaby Heights.  The food is tasty, reasonably priced, and the service is great. We've only had take out here, but the owners are so passionate about what they are doing. We ordered mutter paneer, chicken biryani, and naan. Everything tasted great and was packed in great reusable plastic containers. I hate when take out is packed poorly and leaks through the bag.  We will be frequenting here for  our Indian food fix.
