Remember the days when reading a book entailed opening up an ACTUAL book and reading it??? **GASP**
Enter Kidsbooks. If I were a young, snot-nosed kid, I'd be spending part of my weekends here, playing with their toys and curled up with a copy of the latest and greatest kids book.
I walked into the shop over the weekend, searching for something to give a 3 year old boy. I wandered around the store looking confused. One of the stores employees walked up and asked if I needed help. This is all I gave her to work with:
I need something awesome for a 3 year old boy who loves cars and dump trucks... and I'm on a tight budget.
With that, the employee extraordinaire walked me directly to her top 3 picks, and all of them within my price range.
I picked up all of her suggestions and walked over to the till (after all, I was already 5 minutes late for the little boy's birthday. Talk about last minute!!!).
The super friendly girl behind the counter rang up my purchase and even gift wrapped it for me at no extra charge.
I left the store relieved and ecstatic that the entire ordeal only took 15 minutes. NICE!

Oh! And let's just say the books I purchased for the 3 year old rugrat were a smash hit! He still asks me to read the books to him, over and over again, every time I go visit.

Thanks KidsBooks! You're the bestest (yes, it's a word. I read it in a children book, I swear! ;)

What kind of sign is it when the people who work in a store love reading even more than I do? A very, *very* good one. As a person with a soft-spot for children's literature who also happens to have a few nieces, a couple 'o nephews, and a fairy godson (don't ask), I can't think of a better store to find just the right gift for the wee critters in my life.

Think it's just another bookstore? Think again, buddy. This is the mecca of all things when it comes to books for kids. From those "teach the children about the people who live in our alley" reads, to the classic Dr Seuss types, this store has it all. All of that, a play area for those tired toddlers, *and* regular author readings and book launches -- I'd say that Kidsbooks has your tiny tot covered.

I love the written word and am of the opinion that reading to small children and encouraging them to read themselves is one of the greatest gifts that you can give to them. This  makes Kidsbooks a no-brainer as a source for me for gifts for the little ones in my life. This also makes me only slightly more popular to these kids than the person who gifts them clothes, ya whatever!

Kidsbooks carries an excellent variety of educational resource books and high-quality children's literature in a bright, cheerful and well- organized setting. It is complemented by a very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Throw in some educational toys, book signings, story times and author visits and you have the ideal book buying setting.

This store IS as good as it gets when it comes to books for children.  There are all sorts of books for all reading levels and ages.  I cannot describe it any better than that.  There is even a little play area for kids and chairs for adults to browse and to read to their children if they want.

This store is designed keeping children in mind.

"Mabel Murple's house was purple" "I like my red shoes, I like my red shoes, I like my red shoes, I like my red shoes." Those are just a couple of lines from recent rad books I've found through these magical doors.

When you walk into a store like Kidsbooks, you are free to browse, to pull up a comfy chair and read to your kiddies (if you have kiddies, of course). When I walk into Kidsbooks, I look for a clerk who looks like they would be a storyteller. This is an easy feat, considering every one I've encountered is more than happy tol share.

My question is always the same (just the age changes). I have a 4 year old God daughter and she loves to read. What should I get her next? Well, my oh my, the service I receive. A stack of books quickly finds it's way to my arms, and somewhere along the way I feel like a small child, with eyes wide, while a little part of a story is being read to me. And when these gifts are bestowed, they're almost always a bit hit!

Gift wrapping is offered with a smile and I'm on my way right quick. Secretly, I can't wait for my god daughter to get a bit older so she can discover the magic of novels that I'll undoubtedly buy for her here too!

This location has recently been renovated. Now there's even more kid's books and fun for those special short people.  The day I visited looking for a gift for a youngster, there were a lot of people working in the shop. It was no problem to get some help, even though many of the staff members were busy reorganizing after the renovations.

They do book launches and host authors in the store, so it's worth checking out if you're looking for something fun to do with a kid. They have the usual "best seller" kids' books, but they also have Canadian, First Nations and Multicultural books. If you want to jump on the Success-by-Six train, this is a great place to get on board.

I suppose that many of you haven't read a kid's book in years, maybe verging on decades.  You'd be surprised at some of the stuff out there- and how good it is.  One author I love, Mo Williams, makes books with simple stories but the illustrations are so much fun.  It's a blend of cartoony characters on top of black and white photography.  Love it.

For me, a picture book lover, Kidsbooks is an amazing place.  Lots of fun to browse.  Parents and relatives take note, going to a place like this just might cause your kid to fall in love with reading!

Kidsbooks may not be THE definitive store when it comes to children's lit in Vancouver. There are a surprisingly large amount and some with more diverse selection but Kidsbooks really stands out for it's philosophy.
Kidsbooks really promotes kids connecting with reading and writing and makes a huge point of not only getting kids to find the right books but getting kids to meet and talk to the authors and illustrators who make the books that they love. I think it's amazing the amount of great guests they get into the store and all the events they throw are enjoyable for adults and kids alike. I have a lot of illustrator and writer friends who are obsessed with this place because it promotes a lot of great Canadian and indie talent.
Whether you have a kid or just love a good picture book, Kidsbooks is worth checking out.

Another landmark Vancouver store, which just happens to be owned by one of my best and oldest friend's mom, Ms. Simon. One a public librarian, Ms. Simon and her staff are all passionate about matching the right bit of child lit with the right reader. A resource centre for the classics, and the newest crop of titles (including those from local writers), movies, or language kits, this store will keep the kids entranced and hopefully launch a lifelong reading habit.

My two toddlers LOVE coming to Kidsbooks on Broadway. The layout of the store is stroller-friendly. There is a great activity station with huge leather chairs where the kids can play and read while I browse. The sections are very well thought out by age range. The books and toys that Kidsbooks carries are top-of-the-line and unique. Highly recommend this store for anyone looking for a great gift for a little person or something for their young ones!

Great selection of books for children of all ages.  I liked the atmosphere, but the store is a lot smaller on the inside than it looks on the outside (I know...weird).

This is THE bookstore to go to when shopping for books for children of all ages.  Their collection is extensive and very intelligent; it seems that each book in the store has been chosen with some care by someone who actually respects books and children.  Kidsbooks also hosts occasional events, and makes a point of being in tune with the community they serve.  They have, for example, a multi-cultural and a First Nations book section.  So, if you are ever looking for a gift for a kid that you love, come here first, you'll be glad you did!
