I am in the process of buying a used car and a friend recommended Kevin's both as a new mechanic and to inspect the potential car I bought. Kevin's performed that inspection today. They understood the need for speed in such processes and gave me an appointment the next day. The person on the desk was cheery and explained  the process both on the phone and when I arrived.

Kevin's is a small shop and you will literally come in through the bays where car are being fixed. Parking is limited in their lot so if someone picks you up, have them park on the street. There is no trouble finding on the street, safe parking. There is a tiny office with free wifi to stay in if you are waiting for your car. Tiny as in seats for 3 people on the couch. This isn't a fancy, big store. There is free coffee but nothing else (walk across Rengstorff to the McDonalds or Crispy Creme if you want a snack while waiting).

Their inspection was thorough. They explained everything and answered all my questions thoroughly. The charge: $0. Yes, free. I'm impressed and I'm going to give them further business (hopefully with the car they inspected).

So happy my friend recommended this place to me! There was a huge crack in my windshield (something hit it on the freeway and the crack just kept growing!), and one of my headlights was out so I needed to replace it.

After getting an outrageously expensive quote from another auto shop, I decided to try calling Kevin's Auto Repair, who my friend said she had a good experience with and believed to be honest and trustworthy. I called and got a quote, which was thankfully MUCH less than my last quote, and I scheduled to come in a few days later. I was so pleased about how quick and easy everything was! These guys are no-nonsense, kind, and can be trusted to get the job done. I was in and out, both when I dropped off my car and later on when I picked it up and paid the bill. It came out to even less than was quoted, which was really nice and a pleasant surprise!

My only complaint is that they left my car kind of dirty (smudges on the front seats, and a pretty potent fuel-y smell that lasted quite awhile - hopefully it went away after leaving my windows open on the drive home! I don't know, maybe the smell was stronger because the weather was warm and all the heat was trapped in the car? It smelled pretty bad, but I think it will be okay after airing out a bit). Also, I might have felt a little bit more assured if they had given just a quick explanation/overview of what they did, since we didn't exchange very many words; but at the same time, the services I needed were really simple and pretty straightforward so I understand, and I was really thankful that it all was so quick and easy so it's all good. Also, the smudges are a small price to pay for a job well done and I could probably get a car wash with the $ they saved me :)

Will definitely be back here! So thankful for a place that is affordable, trustworthy, and convenient (I hate having to worry about/deal with car stuff, since I don't have a clue about these things)! Thanks a lot, Kevin's Auto Repair!

Auto repair generally isn't my favorite process, but man, is it so much better with a trustworthy, no-frills, no-BS mechanic like Kevin and crew. They're honest, straightforward, efficient, and the prices are good.  As a result I've been going to Kevin's for years now. What more can you ask for?

My latest trip to Kevin's (pretty representative of my past experiences):

Took my car in because my check engine light was on. Within ~10 minutes, they'd identified the issue, had an estimate for me, and gave me a sense of how long repairs would take (couple hours). I mentioned one of my windows was sticking when rolling up (super annoying, but not something I want to drop fat cash on), and Kevin offered to fix it for free. They also offered to give me a lift to work right then and there - no weird shuttles/timing/etc. When I picked up my car later in the day, my issue was fixed, Kevin gave me a discount, and the window worked great and its repair was free (along with solid advice about when it should get more serious repairs before it's too late to salvage - my car is on the older side).

Legit. Never taking my car anywhere else when it's sick.

P.S. If you're someone who needs schmoozy service, fancy waiting rooms, and someone to bring you sparkling water while you wait, this is probably not the place for you. If you want a no-nonsense fix for your car at a great price, though, Kevin's is where it's at.

I have known Kevin and his staff for several years now.  What I like best, as a customer is the enthusiasm, the helpfulness, the communication skills and the professional demeanor. During the years my parents and I have been using the services, with all of our vehicles, the staff has consistently demonstrated all of customer service qualities and more, and I heartily endorse this business for any and all car problems.
This entire staff is reliable, dedicated and eternally upbeat. The ability to calm frustrated customers is unparalleled, and it is because of the excellence in their area is the reason when I have an issue I repeatedly have called and gone to the shop for assistance. Kevin and his entire staff have always been honest and helpful and hold to their estimates giving you the updates that may be needed in their findings.
I feel that Kevin and his staff exceed customer expectations. I would like to commend again excellent level of service, professionalism and follow-through.
The entire staff is a hardworking, top-performing customer service professionals. They all have my highest recommendation. The only thing any company really has to sell is service.  This entire team has that qualification.

I had a fantastic experience with Kevin's Auto Repair, and won't take my Subaru anywhere else.

This guy decided to swerve into me on Shoreline a few weeks ago, and smashed the passenger side of my 2010 Forester. It's my first new car, so I was really disheartened to see it crunched like that. I was not optimistic that any shop would be able to get it back like it was.

After Kevin's was done with it, you cannot tell that anything ever happened. It's perfect, good as new. They even went beyond the specifications of the insurance adjustor to ensure that it was just right.

Kevin efficiently and competently answered my questions about the insurance claim process and kept me up to date on where my car was. He just handled it.

I've taken my car there for routine service, and will continue to do so. It's really reassuring to know that they're versatile enough to handle this kind of thing as well. I don't like taking my car to the dealer, and Kevin's gives me a great, no-nonsense alternative at a fair price.

I went to these guys with a list of repairs that the Mini dealer wanted to do. The dealer wanted to charge over $7,000 for these repairs. Kevin took a look at the list and provided a very objective review. I agreed to the repairs total cost about $950, the car runs great and all the problems that I noticed are gone.

These guys are not only great at what they do, they are respectful and explain what needs to be done. They are beyond fair on pricing and actually treat you like a fellow human being. The dealer tried to scare my son into agreeing to these repairs. Go to Kevin's you won't be disappointed.

Today was the second time I've gone to Kevin's so I'll cover both...

The first time I went in, I was hearing a weird squeaking sound when I accelerated.  Not only did he fully check out my car for free (including a full inspection since I mentioned that my last mechanic wasn't great so I didn't know what all needed to be done, yes I know dangerous words at some mechanics) but he found a fix to the squeak, which turned out to be the hubcap, yay saturns, and explained that though my shocks and struts were shot, that it was expensive, so I should hold off till I can afford it since I wasn't driving bumpy or windy roads

Today was my second visit, for an oil change, and new tires and alignment. He fit me in with very little notice.  The oil change, including labor, cost about the same as I used to pay at Saturn, the tires were around what it cost me last time at Costco, and he remembered me and my car and made sure the squeak was still okay, and told me to pop by anytime if it comes back.

I've referred coworkers, and even when I move up the peninsula in a month, it'll be worth the drive to have the work done here =)

I've been taking my cars to Kevin for over 20 years now. He's kind, he's honest and he's competent. I know he's honest because there have been a few times where I thought the radiator or alternator (or what have you) needed to be replaced but it turned out to be something simple like a loose wire or a leaky hose - and that's what he told me. He could have taken advantage of me.

Kevin tends to be matter-of-fact and dry, so if you are expecting a big ray of joy and sunshine sales-type person, you might be put off. But who cares? He's there to fix your car right. You don't have to marry him. I'd rather have a mechanic who is a bit dry, but is honest and competent.

The breaks on my dad's car were totally shot.  The emergency break didn't function at all, and the breaks would squeak when pressed.  I managed to get the cars to Kevin's.  He was able to fix the breaks that day for a very reasonable rate.   I'm no expert, butKevin struck me as very professional and honest.  I will not hesitate to take my cars to Kevin's again.

Kevin's is the place I recommend to all my friends.  I've had a lot of work done over the years, so the last time I went, I had three issues: window wasn't rolling up, the engine was experiencing power loss, and the air filter needed to be replaced.

They actually took care of everything free.  Pretty amazing.  I had just spent a lot of cash last time rebuilding my engine, but that doesn't mean I'm entitled to free work like this.  Impressive.

I've been to Kevin Auto twice.  This review will address workmanship, customer service and integrity.

    Workmanship:

No complaint.  When I called for the price to replace the brakes, they gave the best price around.  I'm quite satisfied about it.

    Customer service:

The first time I was there, I noticed Kevin doesn't have a "pleasant" demeanor.  It's early in the morning, so I decided to check him out again in the afternoon.  He was slightly better but he won't be the kind of guy to attend you attentively and pleasantly, he's more like one of those, get things done, very direct and for some people may think he's blunt.  However, I think he's just being straight forward.

Tony is a little bit better but still, not as welcoming as you expects good customer  service is like.  But they are mechanics.  Nevertheless, the ladies at the cashier is much more pleasant and you feel more welcome there.

    Integrity:

I have other issues with the car, which was a coolant leaks, Kevin said it's a serious problem (while my other mechanic we've been going to for many years said it's not a serious problems but a nagging one. Too bad he's now 30 miles away from us).  We've known about the leaks for quite a few months and have never gotten worst,  we've been just adding coolant every month or 2 and everything is ok.  However, right after we get the brake fixed, they alerted us about the coolant leak problem (since the coolant light is on).  They also warned us not to drive long distance with it (Tony did).  The radiator shoot out steam a few days later.  Turned out one of the small screw cap was "missing" or blew off as they said.  so we decided to fix the leak as well.  At first, Kevin said it's free, he has that little cap for me, but when I pick up the car, it costs us $200+.  Later after talking to other mechanics, we think there is some suspicion about the missing cap.

Though I can't say what happened exactly and Kevin never explained why that cap was blew off, was it loosened?   It was screwed on so it can't be just blew off.  We felt it was quite a coincidence.   And think I should mentioned it.  So far, some of other reviews suggested that they are honest.

These high reviews are completely deserved!

    The Short review:
As everyone has said, it isn't a fancy-looking place and he doesn't go out of his way to kiss up to you, but he is a nice guy. Plus, they are serious about doing good work, and doing it quickly!

    More Details:
My husband and I took the car in to get our timing belt and water pump replaced as well as to have an oil leak looked at.

He gave us a real quote, not a "base quote" and said he'd tighten up the places where the leaks were coming from for free! Then, he came in under quote--gotta love that! As part of the maintenance, they replaced the thermostat that we had already replaced. We told him that and he took that off the bill right away.

We paid $300 less than the dealer quoted us and $200 more than the shop down the street (which has fewer reviews and fewer stars). Right around the middle price-wise, but they tightened down a lot of seals and bolts for free. They didn't offer to do any expensive work (and they could have) and they gave us good reasonably-priced options. They obviously wanted us to leave feeling like we got a good deal. We did. Everything went as well as or better than I hoped. We are extremely happy!

After a coolant system overhaul 2 years ago at Kevin's, the thermostat housing cracked and leaked coolant.

Initially, they wanted to charge me $400 bucks for the thermostat housing replacement --- part: thermostat housing ~$16, O-ring ~$2 and the rest labor (pretty high considering it is a 2 nuts and tension clamp DIY type of work).

At first I was pretty pissed off because I spent good money here last time and now I have to go through the hassle again.  After explaining to them this part was specifically replaced two years/12,000 miles ago with them, they called me back next day and fixed it free.

Kudos for doing what is "Right" and inspecting the old VW free of charge.

At this point my wife and I trust Kevin with our cars 100%.  Let me say that again, WE TRUST A MECHANIC 100%.

We have always had positive experiences here.  Kevin is a straight shooter and will give you an honest assessment of what your cars needs/doesn't need.  I mean that literally.  He will say, "Your car needs X, Y, and Z.  X is a serious problem, Y could be fixed but is not critical, and Z  you can just ignore all together if you want".  How many mechanics will tell you you DON'T need something done because it's not critical?

As an operation, they take costumer satisfaction very seriously.  As an example, I recently brought in a VERY beat up 96 Saturn due to a check engine light.  When a mis-firing piston was diagnosed as the possible problem (or something like that) I paid the $500 to fix it and went on my way.  Less than a day later the check engine light popped back on.  I called and told them about this, and was told to bring it back so they could take a closer look.

After working to diagnose the problem for an entire day, Kevin informed me the problem was an internal engine thing (I forget the exact terminology) that is very hard to detect, yet is quite serious, and told me the replaced piston wasn't in fact needed.  To make up for the fact I paid for something that wasn't needed Kevin put the original $500 toward the cost of fixing the new problem, waived the cost of labor for the whole job, and threw in an oil change and tune up.

To me, having someone that will independently own up to a mistake and offer to make the situation right is priceless.  Aside from that, Kevin seemed genuinely bothered by what happened and kept apologizing for it. Very refreshing to me.

This was the only problem my wife and I have had here, they usually do a good quick job when we need work.

I would recommend this place to anybody.  Please support a good, honest, local mechanic!

Saw the reviews on yelp for this place, and figured I'd give it a try. My Jeep was due for its 60,000mi service, and I called up Kevin's to ask how much it'd be. The guy on the phone (Kevin, perhaps?) told me around 300 bucks. I bring the car in the next morning and drop it off. An hour or so later, they call to tell me there are a couple minor things that need to be replaced (spark plug boots and air filter), so it'll be $350. That sounds fine to me, so they do the work and call me in the afternoon. I go over to pick the car up and the guy at the desk (okay, now I'm pretty sure it's Kevin) shows me the invoice. Then he crosses out the $350 and writes in $300 and goes off to run my credit card. When he comes back, I ask, "Only 300, huh?" His response: "Yup, well, I told you $300, and I'm the boss."

    Me = impressed

I have been going to Kevin's for at least 15 years with all sorts of automotive ailments.  They always do a good job at a fair price, and fairly quickly.  The thing I appreciate most is that he is honest.  Doesn't try to up-sell the repair and doesn't spout any mumbo jumbo.  There is a 'mom and pop' feel about the place and they seem to care about your problem.

Absolutely without question one of the best auto repair shops that I have ever been to! I went to Kevin's to just get a simple oil change but I certainly got more than that. As I was waiting for my car, Kevin came out to speak with me and let me know what the recommended oil was for my Chevy HHR was and whether I wanted to go with this GM recommended oil which I gladly accepted. I also had an engine air filter that I had brought with me and Kevin's mechanic changed it for no charge! (The engine air filter in the HHR is not real simple to get to)

I also wanted to have Kevin look at my battery as it was not really well secured in the bracket that is located behind the spare tire. Kevin took a look at that and fixed all of that for me as well. Since Kevin was working around my spare tire, he asked me where my lug wrench and jack were for the car and told Kevin that the car did not come with them. Kevin then took it upon himself to go to the back of his shop and found a lug wrench for me to use if I ever needed to change a flat tire. Wow! Is that service or what? And again, no charge for this! He just wanted to make sure that I did not get stranded somewhere without that wrench. When it cake time to pay the bill, all of this help and service for $66! I paid the same when I went to Jiffy Lube and all I got was a "thanks" and "goodbye".

I need to have my front stabilizer bar looked as I have some noise coming from the front end if my car and I know where I an going to have that fixed! If you want honest, quick and dependable service, you MUST go to his shop and visit Kevin. YOU WILL NOT regret it! Also, there is a guy that works in the back office that collects your payment after your car is repaired and his name is Tony. He was a nice guy and a real pleasure to speak with as well. All I can say is that I am so lucky to have found an auto repair shop that is dependable, honest and has a level of customer service that is superb! If you are in need of car repairs and have not tried this shop yet, I would HIGHLY recommended it!!

I found Kevin's on yelp after looking for a place to get my windshield replaced. When I pulled up, I was a little skeptical (I own a Lexus and didn't see one sign of a luxury car on the lot).

Kevin does have a bit of a dry sense of humor, but he is fair and wants everything that comes out of his shop to be done right.

It took about 3 weeks to get my windshield done correctly; they failed to replace the molding along with the new glass. Even with the long wait, they were  fair, honest, and fun!

bottom line: down-to-earth and practical, as trustworthy as you'll find

i came to kevin's based on yelp reviews and the recommendation of a friend.  it is an unassuming shop next to a tow-truck company, and you have to walk through their garage to get to the modest lounge, which has free wifi.

i had been told by the dealer that i had warped brake rotors and they wanted to charge a small fortune to fix it as i was out of warranty.  kevin took one look at my brakes and instantly discovered that the dealer (a previous dealer, not the same as the one that diagnosed my brakes) had previously replaced only the pads and not the rotors which had developed a groove, resulting in a false diagnosis of warped rotors.

not only was kevin quick with his analysis, he also told me not to do any brake work until the pads wore down (as they were fairly fresh) to save myself some money, as long as i could live with the noise and mild vibration resulting from the grooves on the rotors.  to top it off, he didn't even charge me for the diagnosis!  i will definitely be coming back here for any future work.

I desperately needed to get an oil change and my tires rotated and I didn't want to wait. Luckily, this place is walking distance from my work and got good reviews so I came here. I'm glad I did.

Here are a few things to know about this place:

    1. If you're looking for car dealership service where they pull up your car for you, wash your car, and all that extra stuff, you probably won't find it here.
    2. They're very honest and straightforward with you. They don't try to oversell stuff just to jack up the price. BIG BIG WIN
    3. They're pretty damn busy so I was lucky enough to have it done while I was at work but it's probably best to come early in the morning or make an appt
    4. Friendly guys who are pretty helpful with any questions or concerns I had. Like I said earlier, they're very honest and don't try to oversell.

Most of the complaints were because Kevin (the owner) seemed kind of mean and distance and there was no complimentary free car wash. I can see why they said that but Kevin was pretty friendly to me and he's just an honest guy who gets his stuff done for you without trying to trick you into anything. And that's why I'm a big fan of him. I don't need the concierge service, I just need my car fixed at a decent price.

It's not very often that I feel respected and not taken advantage of at a mechanic.

Kevin's Auto is definitely the exception to the norm in this category as well as in their quality of service.   My roommate has been going to them for years and raves about both their customer and car service and bang for your buck, so I thought I'd go and check it out.

I am so glad that I did!  I got a 5,000 mile oil change for only $43 dollars (including tax) in under an hour (they went to search for an air filter, or else it would have been shorter.  They gave me the option as to whether I wanted them to search).

They have a small, but nice and quiet waiting room.  Their staff is nothing but professional and (as I noted earlier), Kevin treated me with respect and talked very honestly and openly (i.e. not condescendingly) about what was going on with the car, how the breaks looked, the fluids were doing, etc. etc...  I had a great experience at Kevin's and will definitely be returning there for my future automotive needs;  I recommend it hands down.

Kevin's store is one that is a place for honest people. I think they try to work hard and be honest about the way they do things do small issues like change of brake light are things they usually won't charge when done with servicing or other stuff.

Only small issue is that they tend to get so busy sometimes they seem unfriendly. I understand that so I'm still a loyal customer. Just call ahead to schedule your car in for the day if you can. =)

Recently took my Audi in for a tune up, and to install some parts. They did a very thorough job. Also saved me 600 dollars on labor, compared to going to the Audi dealership and they do a way better job than Audi.

Quality service at a reasonable price. I trust these people and their judgment, they never take advantage with excuses to charge you more. They are very friendly and kind. Once I took my car for something and they changed my oil for free. Also once my oil stick was broken and they gave me one for free as well.

I went to this shop after reading the Yelp reviews, and I can say that it's all true.  I had a scratch and slight dent on my front bumper.  I was in a rush to leave, so Kevin looked at it immediately, cleaned it up and gave me some epoxy (free!) to do an ad hoc repair.  Incredibly nice and helpful.  I would highly recommend him to anyone.

My car wouldn't start.  This made me very mad.
I took my car to Kevin's Auto Repair.
Everyone was very nice.  I got less mad.
Kevin checked my car himself.  I got even less mad.
Kevin discovered it was just loose battery posts. I got happy.
Kevin performed a very thorough inspection.  I got more happy.
Tightened posts and a working car.  I got more more happy.
All this for a "Have a Good Week-End" and not a penny more.
    I got VERY happy.
    I like being happy.
And i like Kevin's Auto Repair even more :-)

Thanks, Gnat C., for an awesome recommendation!!! :)

There aren't even words to describe how great Kevin's is. It's such a chill, small operation where you can drop by at any time and they will take you in with open arms. My dad is incredibly anal with his cars, and even though this is MY car, he asks me every time if I got my oil changed, checked my tire pressure, filled up my windshield wiper fluid, blah blah blah. I walk into Kevin's and tell them to check everything out for me and they gladly do it free of charge. I also went to them when my windshield cracked. They only charged me $50 for labor and the windshield only cost about $180. Amazing! Don't get quotes from anywhere else - just go here!

This is by far the best auto repair joint I've found. Kevin will take care of you along with the rest of his employees. They are honest with reasonable prices. They have quick turn-around and are overall pleasant. I won't take my automotive transportation anywhere else!

thanks for the superb service and taking care of my car!

I must echo the other reviews. The experience we had with Kevin was the same. And I believe that consistency is a big deal.

The dealer told me that we had to have the intake manifold removed and boiled out in order to solve the issue we were having which would cost 4-5 hundred dollars. Kevin said it really wasn't that big a deal, they do it all the time, and it should only take and hour or so.

We were also able to pay our bill over the phone and they locked the car outside for us to pick up after hours.

I manage a major Auto Body Shop (one that gets GREAT Yelp reviews - thanks yelpers!) and I know what it takes to provide good service. These guys are doing it and I just love seeing it on other businesses like mine.

Old school mechanic - great values, and trustworthy. They'll be getting more of our business.

Best auto repair service I've ever had. Initially took my car to a dealer who said my radiator was broken and it would cost $900+ to replace. Then decided to try out Kevin's, where they not only would have charged less that 50% of that to replace my radiator, they actually were very honest and shared that nothing was wrong w/ my radiator - I just needed a new cap for $30.

Definitely recommend this place. An honest mechanic is impossible to beat.

I would have to agree with all of the positive feedback on this site.  These guys know what they're doing, they're fast and seem like a good bunch of guys.  They have a quick turnaround and they care about taking good care of their customers, which is hard to find with other shops.

I bought a rack and pinion myself and had it installed by these guys for ~$500, which is $1,000 less than had I got the work done at Carlson Volvo.  If you need an honest bunch that's easy to work with, keep these guys in your pocket.

Despite all the rave reviews here I was still taken aback by the quality of service here. I called up Kevin when my car wouldn't start thanks to a dead battery one rainy morning; not only was he able to acquire the unusual battery required and fit it the same day, but when I asked if he could recommend a tow company to get the car there he offered to come by the house and sort it all out when they had the battery in later.

Absolutely stellar. Kevin will literally go the extra mile to get the job done.

A colleague referred me to Kevin' shop.

I used it twice now, first for checking the status of the car I was abotu to buy, then to perform a 55K check up on the same car (that I ended up buying).

Kevin is always  present paying attention to the necessary details and requests.

He does not let you waste your time or money on unnecessary repairs, mostly because he has no time to waste by his own. The shop is busy but well organized and functional, personnel is kind and seems happy.

I had a great experience at the shop. This is my shop now on.
