4 reviews for Kettleman's Bagel Company
All Reviews
My friend from Montreal loves this place because it is the closest thing to authentic Montreal-style bagels you will find in Ottawa. In fact, it's better than most of the bagel shops in Montreal!
Kettleman's is worth the visit if only to experience the art of bagel-making. The Wood-burning oven is a sight to behold, and the senses are swarmed with fresh dough, wood-burning scents. The Bagel's themselves are outstanding, fresh, a lot of variety, high-quality ingredients, and filling. I personally like to keep my bagel simple, and love the cheese bagel. However, those more daring having a plethora of options in customizing what they want!
Their sandwiches are also worth a try, and the soup's are said to be good. I didn't really like the pastries offered, but they have some variety in that department as well. Overall, this is a great place to visit to have the whole bagel experience.
Kettleman's probably makes the best bagels I've ever had and when friends visit, they often won't shut up about their long withstanding Kettleman's bagel craving until I take them for their fix. The bagels are delicious, although I recommend stopping by during peak hours in order to get the freshest bagels, as opposed to showing up during the wee hours of the night. Which, by the way, is an option because Kettleman's NEVER closes. On that note, the staff aren't always the most chipper: but who could blame them?
Their spreads are probably my favourite perk for going here because they use real ingredients and don't just douse the cheese with flavouring. If you order the dill pickle spread, your bagel will be spread thick with chunks of real dill pickle. Kettleman's also offers other food, including sandwiches (made with bagels), soup, Jewish treats, beverages, cookies and various other desserts.
The smell of the shop and its wood-burning oven is also worth the trip. If you're lucky, you'll get to see them make the bagels, which is a mesmerizing and well-coordinated routine.
Kettleman's converted me into a Montreal Bagel fan. Don't get me wrong - an Everything Bagel from H&H still has my heart, but I do love a Kettleman's Sesame Bagel w/ Lox Schmear. Also ... the cheese bagels are not to be missed.
There are two kinds of bagels: 1) "bagels" - round shaped bread with a hole in the middle, and 2) bagels - real bagels. Kettleman's is home to real bagels. This place will blow you away the very second you walk in the door. First, the aroma - wood burning and dough baking. You smell burning wood because Kettleman's bagels are cooked in a giant, open, wood-burning oven directly across from the entrance. You can order the bagels on their own or as sandwiches. On their own, they have almost 20 varieties, from sesame seed to poppy seed to pumpernickel. As sandwiches, they have about a dozen different kinds - your basic BLT, a Reuban, Italian deli meat, roast beef, etc. The bagels have big holes in the middle, so the sandwiches are a little messy to eat. If you want more than a bagel, Kettleman's also sells soups, coffee, jams & jellies, baklava, and dessert loaves. The downside is it is a cash-only business. But, they do have an ATM in the shop if you are stuck and don't mind paying a $1.50 fee for withdrawal.
