Review from Roanna Z.
The name describes it well. An art gallery of living art for the home. Plants are not just something green to water, they can totally enhance a living or work space. Kermodi's simple configurations of cactus plants and the artistic variety of ceramic 'miniature gardens' are really outstanding!
The shop is diagonally across from the JJ Beans on Lower Victoria at Powel in a stretch of shops that include art galleries.
This is such an interesting area! -

I feel like buying a plant is like condemning it to a slow death sentence. A slow strangling with brown thumbs and inept care, either by smothering or neglect. I can't get it right. I HAVE killed a cactus. But I try, to the despair of the plant kingdom I can only suppose.
Kermodi promises easy care plants that can handle a variety of conditions, and they arrange them artfully in sturdy stoneware containers that I believe are mostly made by Solus Decor down the street. (Which perhaps accounts for a good part of the price of a "living art" piece.) Mainly succulents, cacti, jades, and some very interesting flowering plants. And these things that look like bamboo, but aren't bamboo, that are apparently fabulous in bathrooms. The salesgirl was very helpful in helping me choose a plant for my budget and for the light conditions and intended placement of the plant. She was downright sweet. I only wish they might actually display prices on the plants, as they don't, and it's kind of disappointing to get attached to a particular arrangement, only to find out it's a couple hundred or so. (They do have some sales, announced via a mailing list, and I had a Groupon, but prices generally start at $50 and go up into the hundreds. Custom designs are also available.)
I did find a great little arrangement of three low, spiky succulents for my coffee table, and it really does class up the joint. A month into our relationship it is still alive and not dying. I haven't attempted to water it yet, though. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but the heart wants what it wants. Wish me luck with this one.
PS They accept credit or cash, but not debit cards. (There is an ATM a few doors down at the Husky Station.)Listed in: Adventures with Groupon, Playing House

I don't have the time to do laundry, let alone take care of plants. I usually take the quick and easy route and buy cut tulips and throw them into a vase.
However, if you are looking for plants with a stylish presentation and that last longer than a week, call Kermodi Living Art. They offer high end design packages as well as custom plant decor for the home or office. Their pieces of art are the perfect solution for updating your space, essential to home staging and great as gifts. Did I mention all the plants are low maintenance?

Gorgeous little shop but be warned they have odd hours. I came looking for a jade plant, and while they had many choices for succulents, the jade arrangements were way out of my league - one in the window was $350. I overheard that some of the pots are imported, which at the amount they weigh, would explain the expense. It would seem truly tragic to get one home and not see it survive, so maybe it's best to get a starter plant for some - they ran as little as $30. All plants looked extremely healthy and seemed hand-picked for beauty and proportion. No straggly bits here.
