Every time we have a chance to pop by Richmond, BC, where do we go for a meal? KELONG!! Love the food there. We had a late lunch there on a Saturday afternoon.
Incidentally, Kelong means fisherman's trap set on stilts in the ocean. http://en.wikipedia.or...
Be aware that the wait staff there may not know all the Singaporean or Malaysian terms as they are not from Singapore or Malaysia. I understand that the cook/owner is originally from Hong Kong and spent a lot of time in Singapore, learning all the techniques of cooking real Singapore food.
This time we decided to have cooked food instead of eating "hawker-style" food. The dishes we ordered were:
- from the Lunch Special Menu - the Hainanese Chicken dinner for 4 which includes their famous hainanese chicken rice plus 3 dishes for only $29.99. The Hainanese Chicken was all BONELESS and when you bite into the chicken, it's like eating a marshmallow. I describe it as little pillows. Soooooooo scrumptious! Must eat with the ginger/garlic sauce and the chili sauce. The chicken is served sitting on a bed of thin, long cucumber slices and bits of lettuce with dark sweet soya sauce. The oily chicken rice is perfectly cooked.
- The 3 extra dishes: - ordered
Beef Rendang - OMG! The beef is sooooooooo tender and the spice is just right!
Kangkung Belachan - Soooooooo delicious; right away invokes memories of home
Sayur Lodeh - pretty good vegetarian korma style curry - just like my mum makes!
- Singapore Char Kway Teow - not bad - flat rice noodles with dark soya sauce, bean sprouts, chinese sausage, shrimp. Get the sambal sauce to spice it up!
- We loved the Hainanese Chicken so much, we got another order from the menu of a 1/2 order of the chicken with a full pot of Chicken Rice. Yummers!! Also comes with the 2 essential condiments of chili sauce and the ginger/garlic oily sauce.
The whole meal for 5 people only came to about $53. Really. We left a fat tip 'cos we really love the food here.
We'll be back! -

In terms of Singapore cuisine, I highly enjoy this place. The food is always fresh and delicious.
This is no Tropika; simply a small family run restaurant in an unnoticed strip mall in the heart of Richmond.
Favourites include the Gado Gado, a salad with eggs, veggies, and deep fried tofu with a peanut sauce. Their roti is also great, soft and fluffy, and served with a curry sauce. Then the boneless Hainese Chicken. Yes! Boneless!
The laksa and Mee Goreng here is also pretty amazing. Lots of vegetarian dishes as well, with the signature belachan (shrimp paste). I like Singaporean food because nothing is ever too spicy. Everything is always flavourful. End all this off with a deep fried banana with ice cream!
And there you have it, a satisfying meal of Singaporean dishes, at a very economical price too.Listed in: Lunching in Richmond

Small Singapore restaurant tucked away at the corner of a complex on No. 3 road. The food is tasty and the price is reasonable. I like that its small and family owned. Some yummy dishes include the hainese chicken, the chicken wrap in banana leaf, gado gado, and mee goreng.
