Winnipeg is my home town. I love Winnipeg. What I love most about Winnipeg is that for a relatively small city, it has several homegrown institutions. One of those institutions is Kelekis.

Kelekis is one of my favourite places to go when I'm in Winnipeg. Mostly for nostalgic purposes, because I can still get the same "Kelekis style" hot dog I had when I was kid. I suppose in a world where all things are always changing, it's so refreshing to return to a place that always stays the same.

French fries and a hot dog - that's my staple at Kelekis. The hot dog is amazing simply because it is sliced lengthwise, and the fries are delicious. Period.

Kelekis has been around for so long that it is above reviews, but this is just my way of paying respect and saying thanks.

After being away from The Peg for a number of years, there is an entire repertoire of old haunts we want to visit, and Kelekis was right at the top of the list.
I am so happy to say that we were not disappointed in the least.
Everything was exactly the same as it was the last time we were there, and there is such great comfort in that.
Even Mary at the cash desk, arm in a sling was a welcomed sight when we were ready to pay.
Kelekis is what it is, a social gathering place, the original form of social media, complete with great greasy food. It has held its place in time and in the hearts of the generations who have come to reply upon its consistency and warmth.
I wouldn't change a thing and hope it never ever changes as to monkey around with the spirit of Kelekis would be like monkeying around with civilization as we know it :)
Cheers to the institution and may it live long and prosper!
    PJ xoxo

A north end institution, or so I am told; known for their hot dogs, burgers and fries. The interior is VERY retro, I don't think it's changed from day 1 so it gives the place some character. You can tell that they have a devoted customer base as nearly all of the diners are seniors.

I found it very odd that during lunch, there were a bunch of servers lingering around yet when we received our menus, our server gave us pencils so we could write down our own orders. WTF? Whatever, it didn't kill me to write my own order, I just thought it was amusing. Otherwise, service was mediocre.

I was worried about portion sizes since diners and burger joints around town are known to give you a lot of food. But when I saw the food coming out to other tables, I knew I'd be fine as the portions were quite underwhelming. So this is not the place for those who desire obscene portions.

The food came out relatively fast, the cheeseburger ($4.50) was pretty small, I don't think the patty was even a 1/4 lb; it was probably slightly larger than a McDonald's cheeseburger.  If I was starving, I could easily eat two of these things. But unfortunately, it was a very unremarkable and forgettable cheeseburger. The shoestring fries were crispy and decent but nothing I would deem as crave worthy. The small fries portion was served in a small soup bowl, but for $1.50, that's a fair price. You can get a large for $3. The coleslaw ($2.50) was probably one of the better dishes there; it's a vinegar based slaw so it felt like a palate cleanser after all the grease. The hot dog at $4 feels sort of pricey for a pretty skinny dog; it's nothing like the ones you can get at the hog dog carts around town. The hot dog had good flavour and didn't taste too salty and was dressed with onions, ketchup, relish and mustard.

So all in all, I'm glad I tried this place but probably wouldn't go again considering all the yummy burger joints in the city. I get a little disappointed when I splurge calorically and feel dissatisfied afterward. Though if I were to venture there again, I'd choose the hot dog over the cheeseburger and I'm not even a big fan of hot dogs!

Remember this place is CASH ONLY! And parking is available on the side in their private lot.
