Like most chains, they are popular because it pleases a diverse crowd. I find some of their steaks to be a bit salty/over seasoned but overall, it's a decent place where my very young nieces can join us. I've never had bad service here as the servers are pretty thorough and prompt.
Price wise, the place has been changing their menu so you definitely don't get salad with every entree like they use to do in the old days. Only the "classic keg dinners" offer salad now. The fresh baked rye bread is very yummy with the whipped butter, glad they switched to that from sourdough.
I was there during the lobster summer period so I opted for something different and went with the "seafood sirloin" ($27.95) which came with a grilled top sirloin steak (maybe 6 ounces?) topped with lobster, shrimp and scallops in a chive velouté sauce. The sirloin was flavourful but chewy despite being medium rare. There wasn't much lobster, maybe less than a tablespoon but at $28 I wasn't expecting much seafood LOL. Otherwise, the seafood were cooked right. The chive veloute isn't very good so get that on the side. The roasted peppers and asparagus were delicious and I got to pick one side and went with the twice baked potato. I think I'll stick with "new york classic" - 12 ounce striploin ($34.95) or the prime rib classic - 10 ounce ($27.95).
The kids menu is pretty decent with chicken, steak, ribs or burger options $8.95-$12.95 and includes raw veggies with dip, drink, choice of side dish and ice cream for dessert. And of course they get crayons and an activity sheet.
The Southside Keg gets pretty busy and can get pretty loud. You can make reservations on weeknights but not on weekends.
