It's the Keg, you know what you're getting, you know it's going to be expensive, but it's good.
Our waiter was a bit aloof - we got water - but was effective. He didn't want to take my wife's overdone meat back, but did the second time she asked, so all in all it's all good. Would I go there for a new and astounding culinary experience? Heck no! Would I go there for a tried and true dependable prime rib experience? Yeah, most likely.
It's the comfort food of Prime Rib.

We were heading out to the ferry and decided to visit the Keg since it was on the way. The building is nice. Better ambiance than most chains. Greeting was friendly, service was prompt and good.

We all ordered the classic dinner since it seemed like a good deal. The caesar salad was fine, as was the baked potato and other sides. The steak was really bad though. I guess it's top sirloin, but even so, it was surprisingly tough. You really need that big knife they give you and you'll be chewing for a while. I ordered medium-rare and it was also definitely undercooked.

If you visit, don't be tempted by the "value" of the classic dinner. It isn't worth it. Choose a better cut. For me though, I won't be back. The Keg's best days are behind it. In the end a steakhouse is judged by its steak, and the Keg didn't deliver.

I like the Keg for it's regularized menu: like fast food places, you know what you like, know what it'll cost, and know what to expect. The Saanich Keg lives up to this namesake in part, but prominently demonstrates that it's sure as hell no Keg Mansion.

I should perhaps begin my review with this: the only Keg that I semi-regularly (I try for at least once a year) frequent is the Keg Mansion, in Toronto. The Mansion is wonderful - specularly trained waiters, decent wine selections, and a gorgeous environment. I really enjoy the Mansion, the flagship of the Keg line.

This isn't the case in Saanich.

Upon arriving, my partner and I were quickly seated by the hostess, who was only somewhat addled - there were a lot of people (read: a single couple in front of us), so so she was 'busy' and a bit confused - and our waiter was by fairly quickly. After asking for a minute with the wine menu....we got 15 minutes. The place wasn't that busy. Still, I can appreciate this delay; sometimes people don't know what wines they want.

There is a winter selection that is on the menu, and at any other Keg I've been to the waiters have detailed those 'seasonal' items in more depth. That didn't happen this time. Still, meals were placed (off the classics part of the menu), wine was promptly delivered, and then out came the appetizers.

The garlic bread was excellent, as were the caesar salads that came with our entrees. Unfortunately, the time between appetizers and main course was far too short - we had several extra plates of food sitting on the table, cooling, because the kitchen had sent out our food so quickly. We weren't eating the appetizers slowly; the entrees were out roughly 10 minutes after the appetizer. 10 minutes just isn't enough time to enjoy the meal and each other's company. I don't go to the Keg for dinner to be out incredibly quickly, but to relax and enjoy myself. Throwing food out of the kitchen at me does not create a relaxing atmosphere.

The mains were delightful. I had the filet mignon and my partner the prime rib. While my partner complained that her carrots were just a bit undercooked, everything was perfect as far as I was concerned. The vegetables were crisp and seasoned with a bit of garlic, and the filet was superb. This said, while the meal was absolutely delightful, our waiter wouldn't have known - past asking if we wanted some water half-way through the meal, no other questions were asked. This includes asking us if the meal/wine/appetizers were any good.

It's the general lack of attention to service that warrants this relatively low ranking for a Keg - the food was good, if service was subpar. Perhaps part of my complaints stem from the fact that I frequent the Keg mothership - the Mansion - and know how these restaurants are *supposed* to be run. I just didn't get the Keg service that I expect. When I go to McDonalds (every few years...) I expect subpar service, questionable food quality, and high speeds. At the Keg, I expect excellent service, good food, and well-timed food service. The Saanich Keg only got 1/3 right and, at the price of the Keg, this is unacceptable.

Would I go again? Maybe, but there are other restaurants in Victoria that cost similar amounts of money, have better service, and great food. This Keg franchise has to step up its game if it wants to attract my recurring business in Victoria's culinary wonderland.

We had my birthday party here last night and it was tons of fun.  Lively holiday atmosphere, great service for our party of 10 and the food was yummy.  I had the steak and crab which was delicious. My husband had the steak and lobster and he loved it.  I don't remember much about the ride home which means the drinks were good too.  I hope I behaved myself.
