We should go here more often.  I'm serious.  Someone should remind me.

My partner and I live so close to this place I could literally roll down the hill from my front door and be there.  Of course rolling home uphill after a big feed might not be such an easy task.  But if worse comes to worst, I can just move in here.

Buffet nights are a great option. Lots of delicious foods.  Make your own Gado-Gado.

    Pic:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

Gado-Gado:  Cucumber, lettuce, sprouts, plantain chips, fried tofu, boiled potato, boiled eggs, and peanut sauce.  Mine was delicious except I forgot the boiled eggs.  *cries*

Also, there should be a flyer distributed to local restaurants warning them of my love for deep fried chicken wings.  I love them, doesn't matter what kind and the ones they have are crispy outside, juicy inside and not too seasoned to overpower the wonderful taste of the chicken itself.

Beef rendang and Mi goreng were two more of my favourite dishes.

Great food, and they are friendly too.

There honestly aren't too many places that have allyoucaneat Malaysian food.  Where else can you stuff your face for the low low price of $11?

Kedah House is located inside a strip mall right at the intersection of Argyle and Marine.  It's actually a bit tricky to get into.  The best way is from the west.

Parking isn't too bad, though I can imagine it getting crowded during business hours.  The strip mall has maybe 40 spots.

The inside is a bit beaten up  The clientele and owner are both Malay, so this is always a good sign.

The best way I can describe the cuisine is "Malaysian soul food".  It's not fancy or glamourous, but the food is delicious.  They have beef rendang, chicken, rice, noodles, some vegetables (cucumber and tomatoes), boiled eggs in spicy sauce, soup, and some desserts.  The food is not overly spicy either, so there's no need to bring a bottle of Pepto Bismol either.

Amazingly, unlike most Asian places, they actually take credit card here.  No need to scrounge for change under your couch before coming by.

Give them a try, you won't be disappointed.

What defines Malaysian food? Flavour? Authenticity? Spice?

More often than not, the former two tend to get condensed into the single latter. This is not the case.

Asking to define Malaysian food is like asking to define Canadian food - one has no way of putting a finger on it simply because of the sheer multiculturalism my beloved home country shares with this vast white Northern plain.

Which brings me to Kedah House. They are indeed authentic Malaysian, which is rare to find in this part of the world, so you could only imagine the sheer state of ecstacy I found myself in.

Some say that taking in a new cultural experience relies in experiencing the flavour of the food. At Kedah House, the Malaysian experience you are taking in is genuine, authentic, traditional Northern-West Malaysia food, charateristic of the ethnic Malay population in the Peninsula of Malaysia.

Malay-style fried "Bee-Hun" (aka "Vermicelli") Beef rendang, sambal boiled egg, Gado-Gado, "red-curry" chicken - the explosion of taste in your mouth immediately immerses you into the cultural experience of what it would be like to live in a quaint, traditional, fisherman Malay town right by the beautiful  oceanside.

My only gripe would be that they don't currently serve the typical, traditional Malay-Malaysian "Nasi Lemak" - a single portion dish which includes rice, boiled egg, sambal, and crispy fried anchovies all wrapped in a banana leaf. And that I am not enjoying such a meal of splendour in 35+ degree weather at a roadside hawker stall. But then again I am just being exessively picky.

The food is indeed spicy, but what separates Kedah House apart from other failed attempts at re-creating genuine Malaysian food, is their true authenticity, and flavour.

I overindulged in all the Malaysian goodness here which resulted in a semi food coma afterwards.

This place is hidden in a small strip mall, barely noticeable if you drive by.  Inside, it's a small place, with a bright lime green wall and mainly booth seating. On one wall, there's a set up for a buffet. In fact, they only serve food buffet style now, and have gotten rid of their regular menu.  You basically seat yourselves, and then help yourselves to the buffet.

I was pretty excited when I saw the selection of food available for the buffet. Not too many choices, but enough to keep me happy.

To start, there's a green salad as well as a make your own Gado Gado station. I love Gado Gado, and the thought of being able to eat copious amounts was pretty exciting. Bean sprouts, cucumber, turnip, dried tofu, and then the best part: warm peanut sauce! I doused the sauce all over the salad.

Other dishes were egg with a sambal sauce, a beef rendang, a chicken dish, fried vermicelli, and plain rice for you to soak up all the sauces.  Also, they had a sort of vegetable Tom Yum soup, which was quite flavourful, but a bit too spicy for me.

Gado Gado was awesome, the peanut sauce was the perfect sweetness, and I couldn't get enough of it! Beef rendang was infused with lots of spices, and braised until the meat pulled apart. It was delicious. The chicken was in a tomato chilli sauce, which was too spicy for me, but still good nevertheless.  I also really like the fried vermicelli. It had an interesting flavour, in a good way.

Finally, the desserts. A hot piping bowl of one of my favourites: black glutinous rice porridge cooked with sago and served with coconut milk.

Food is constantly cooked and refilled into the buffet.

    A very satisfying meal!!

Pure accidental lunch find. Tired of my usual lunch go-to spots near my work, I was looking for a Greek place but spotted their sign $9.99 AYCE Malaysian buffet. Pulled right in.

Kind of a poor location with minimal foot traffic, you'd only know it's there by the road sign.

Walking in, you won't expect much. Outdated booths, but hey it's a buffet. Actually brings memories of the countless Filipino potlock parties I went to as a kid.

Beef rendang was perfectly slowly cooked. Tender as hell with a wicked flavourful sauce. Chicken something something was also well spiced and tender.

Ended it with some red bean dessert soup and some steamed rice pudding (I think). Both unique. Both good. Heck they even have some coffee ready to roll.

Pleasant service. They supposedly don't do take out. But the girl said she'd kindly give me an empty container and I can fill it up with as much food as I want!

I came here cause they serve a $9.99 buffet on the weekends....and what you pay is what you get @_^

They did have all the good Malaysian flavors down and everything was fresh and warm with a lot of turnover. So, it's safe :)

I think I enjoyed their mung bean soup dessert the most though.

My review is based on the weekend buffet. Kedah house serves
$10 all you can eat buffet on the weekend.

Kedah is a state located northwest of Malaysia.  Known for paddy fields and the birthplace of Malaysia's first prime minister.

Back to my review, I can't really expect a lot from $10. One dish could easily cost $10 or more. They have beef rendang, gado-gado, yellow rice,  salad, coffee, drinks, some Malay desserts.

I find that the Ban Chean Kuih (thick pancake) was disastrous.  Taste wise, 2.5/5.  Again, I have very high standards. The restaurant is filled with posters of Malaysia.  Will I come back again? Not for a long time.

Kedah house has become a full buffet joint - no more regular menu, just buffet on wed/thurs/fri nights, and all day sat/sun. The good news is that the buffet is quite tasty, we went there for lunch today, and it was fairly crowded for a sat late morning, There was beef rendang, an nice tomato based chicken dish, briyani rice, fried bee hoon, make it yourself gado gado and one variety of kueh to top it off. they also had authentic :) coffee w/ non-dairy creamer..:). Service was nice and friendly. We also got some satay and roti chanai, 6 pieces of satay was 9$, and i think the roti was $4 for 2 pieces. Overall the food was good, not amazing or earth shattering, but tasty and nicely flavored. If they were just a block from my home, i'd probably visit at least one a week, but they are a 100 miles away for me - so not something i'd crave for. The cravings i'd save for seri malaysia :)... anyway, it's a nice place, with quick and good food. if you are in the neighborhood, you should visit.
