Finding good sushi on the North Shore is like finding good German food in Richmond. It exists but it doesn't taste that good.
Anywho, I've passed by this restaurant many times and was quite confused as to why it had Chinese food on the Japanese menu too. There were quite a few restaurants on that I've seen on this side of the bridge have this kind of a menu.
Confusion aside, I found out that this restaurant is Cantonese run, that's why they diversified on the menu.
I decided to check out Katsu Sushi because it had one of my favorite items on the menu, Zaru soba. Not too many restaurants in Vancouver do this properly, and this is the only place that does it right. The Zaru soba comes on top with ice cubes and is served with ginger, wasabi, green onion and tsuyu. One thing I wish it had was the seaweed shreds. Mmm... The Zaru soba was refreshing and delicious.
The next few items I ordered was the wild salmon sashimi and the negitoro roll. The wild salmon sashimi was very fresh. As for the negitoro roll, it had the right amount of seasoning in the rice and the amount of negitoro. One thing I noticed different about the negitoro roll is that the negitoro isn't chopped finely like other places, it's more chunkier. Hey, I can't complain. :)
The waitress, Joyce, knows her stuff and really enjoys working there. She's bubbly and friendly and takes time to talk to the patrons.
Definitely a revisit!Listed in: North Shore Gems!

Extra star for the service and Dynamite Roll: good portion of unagi and even more avocado, nicely cut. White Ginger too.

If your standard for good sushi is "raw" this place is for you: Farmed Atlantic lice-bombs, tempura grease-sticks, and California Salmonella rolls. Yum.

Sushi Katsu is easily our family's favourite sushi restaurant. We've eaten at a lot of sushi places but Katsu remains our favourite. Seafood is always very fresh tasting. While the servers do occasionally go missing :) we find the quality of the food worth it.
for those that were heart-broken when Gen Sushi changed ownership, go to Katsu! that's where all the staff went! -
Review from Gradon T.
I went into Katsu Sushi with my girlfriend one afternoon about a week and a half ago. We were promptly seated and given menus, and the server was in a rush to take our orders.
The food was delicious - perfect sushi by all accounts.
But when we were done, that same quick-to-take-your-order server was nowhere to be found. After about 10 minutes, we had to ask another server for our check.
If the service matched the food, it'd be 4-5 stars. Unfortunately, it didn't, so I gave it 2 stars. -

Best Hamachi I have found on the North Shore. Hands down.

Disappointing. What was once my favourite neighbourhood restaurant has gone downhill with the new ownership. Takeout order was cold, substitutions were made (and not good ones) - one container had (all mixed together) salad, sashimi, wasabe, fried gyoza and a lot of very watery salad dressing. The tempura we ordered was not present (though charged for) and instead we received 3 california rolls. The chicken terriyaki was half there and had one lonely thumbnail sized piece of raw carrot. When this was reported to the management (very politely) we got no reaction and no apology. We are quiet folk who have always had a pleasant relationship with this restaurant and ordered from them frequently, visited and recommneded them to friends. We are at the point of avoiding the place now and seeking out other venues. The new staff is indifferent and frequently try to tell you what you are going to order. Listening is not their strong suit. So sad.
