Got a great hair cut and that is a rare thing! Will definitely go back!

Kara's is an OK salon. I've only gone there to get my hair done and have had amazing experiences and terrible experiences. I find the turnover is so high with staff that I'll get someone I like only to go back a few months later and find that they've left.

Any bad experiences I've had there have come down to customer service (waiting a long time and not being updated as to what's going on, usually) and a stylist rushing through my haircut OR not listening.

That being said, it's a very convenient place to get your hair cut and they often accept walk-ins. They carry good products and offer discounts to students. It's a five minute walk from my work so I often go there just for the sake of getting my hair done over my lunch hour... but I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth the risk of baaaaad hair...

I love Kara's mostly because I love my hairdresser. There are some kinda snotty girls there, but Ayla is awesome. She's laid back and always does a great job on my hair. I've been going there for a few years now. They are usually pretty nice when I'm booking an appointment too, even if it's last minute.

I've heard good things about their other services, but I suppose it depends who you get. I would say if you don't like your hairdresser or masseuse, you should go back and try someone else, and let them know about your disappointment.

'Your girl didn't seem to care you existed, which is sort of fucked'. -My friend giving you an idea on how this review is going to go.

My friend and I ventured down to Kara's for a birthday treat to me. The comments by other Yelpers are spot on in regards to atmosphere of the place and the general attitude in reception. It's a pretentious little spot that puts on airs that it's a young and hip place when in reality it felt like a parody. This is Halifax for Christ sakes, not New York. Which is hilariously enough where my friend is originally from.

This review is a bit different than the others for a couple of reasons. The obvious one is that we didn't have a great time but the important one is that we didn't get our hair done or get piercings, we each got a pedicure and a massage.

The pedicure- Firstly we were booked in for a 'spa pedicure'. We didn't get one. The young woman who did my pedicure was excellent once she dropped the pretension which is obviously encouraged at Kara's. Over all it was a highly enjoyable experience for myself (due a lot to the free wine) and an ok experience for my friend.

The massages-My friend got a pre-natal massage and I was booked in for a relaxation massage. Due to the fact that there was an oversight and we were basically forgotten about in the pedicure room our massages were only 30 minutes long. Fine. It was getting late, people want to go home.

My masseuse treated me like an inconvenience. Pre-massage we had to fill out forms stating problem areas. I have some major problem areas muscle wise. The masseuse obviously knew this since she read the paperwork but still snarkily remarked about how much muscle damage I have. Dude, seriously? Show some sympathy or something. I was never asked if I was comfortable (which I wasn't) and knew she was doing a half assed job just to get me out of there. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

My friend had the exact opposite experience with her masseuse. She made sure to meet all of her needs, understood exactly what my friend wanted and totally met all my friends' expectations. My friends' only complaint is that the massage wasn't more relaxing which may be due in part to the fact that we had adjoining rooms and she knew my masseuse was being a dick.

I'll stick to Massage Addicts for a massage and a place that's a bit less 'young and hip'(it's laughable just to write that) for a place to get my nails done. Meh to you, Kara's.

I've gone to Kara's three times for massages. The massage itself was okay, the girl doing it was friendly and talkative which was fine.

But, the atmosphere is not spa-like. When you walk in you're greeted by about 4 workers ignoring you, loud music, and a row of empty salon chairs.

The staff, for the most part, are not welcoming or friendly. I always feel out of place when I go in.

Now my rating is based on the massages alone, I have not got my hair done there or a tattoo. But those of you considering indulging yourself in spa care I'd advise you to look elsewhere.

Have to admit, I had major doubts about this place. Hair? Piercings? Tattoos? Day Spa? But, that's too many darned things!

However, when visiting a friend a spontaneous urge to get pierced came upon us. Unfortunately, this urge also came about the same time that hurricane Earl passed through. Despite a hurricane having passed through the city but 6 hours earlier, Kara's was still open (fun fact: they're on the hospital's electrical grid).

My piercer was very knowledgeable and direct about what he was doing (eye brow) and easy to ask questions/personable. May have been a bit pricey (around 50 with the hardware too) but here I sit while typing this having experienced no drama after 5 months of having it in. From my understanding, eyebrow piercings tend to sometimes have issues due to poor piercing or bad aftercare.

Might not get my hair cut here or get a tattoo but if I'm back in Halifax and get a piercing urge again to Kara's!

Kara's is a hip little spot that can appeal to urbanites everywhere. With its heavy spectrum of spa and hair services, it all seems very on top of its game. I've found Kara's to be reliable for keeping current with the latest treatments and services in the industry.

Tattoos and piecing? Yes... it is possible to followup a cut with a new nose ring or that dragon tattoo you've always wanted. They pretty much offer it all: tanning services, hair extensions, full body spa services and hair care and color.

Kara's even emphasizes a little spa love for guys. The general spa experience carries an overwhelmingly feminine stigma, so this special "Men's Room" menu is an excellent reassurance to the boys who want to maintain.

Kara's is very current with all sorts of perks. The staff are professional and insightful-- trustworthy of your precious locks. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for hair care and the like.

A friend of mine and I were killing time downtown the other day when she suggested we look for a place to get her bangs trimmed. My friend I should probably mention has the curliest natural hair I have ever seen, the small curls that frizz and are really hard to brush and style.

We were able to get a walk-in appointment at Kara's and decided to check it out because I heard it was a pretty hip place, good for a younger clientele. The prices at Karas are reasonable for the cut you will receive but the staff is young and the girl that was serving my friend was pretty inexperienced. As I looked around the salon it kind of reminded me of hanging out with a bunch of high school mean girls.

The stylists seemed indifferent to customers and the atmosphere was a little too pretentious for my liking. If you are looking for somewhere to get a quick trim or a walk-in appointment than Kara's is a safe bet at a good price. If you are looking for a major hair modification than you might feel more comfortable going to someone with a little more experience.

Kara's Urban Day Sap is the little business that could.  From a single-story shop "back in the day" to an expanded salon with esthetics, piercing, tanning and tattooing upstairs, Kara's growth has proven the time-honoured saying:  Good service grows good customers.

I first went to Kara's about ten years ago, maybe more.  My first tattoo was by Danny in 2003 and since then, he's done three more.

The hair staff are up-to-date with cutting and colouring techniques.  The esthetics staff are attentive and do their best to understand your approach to beauty and enhance that vision, instead of pushing their ideas onto you.  Piercing and tattooing is an added bonus;  both sections have immaculate and sterile surroundings, giving you confidence in the services being provided.  Kara's will pierce teenagers (only ears if I recall correctly);  check with them first to see what documentation you'll need to provide.  My daughter had her ears pierced here with no pain and relatively uneventful healing.

If there is one downside to Kara's, it's that it seems to try too hard to attract the younger clientele without being sensitive to the needs of (gulp) older customers.  The music's a bit too loud and the staff seem to be a bit cliquey, leaving you feeling a bit like you've wandered into the wrong rave instead of your hair appointment.

All in all, though, I highly recommend Kara's.  I wouldn't go anywhere else - and that goes for my daughter too.

I went here recently for a haircut, and even recentlyer for a waxing service. The haircut was fantastic - she got my bangs just right, maybe for the first time ever. My hairstylist was quite professional too, letting me know exactly how I should blow-dry my new bangs.
When I returned to get waxed, I did question the overall professionalism of the place a little bit, as I saw employees going to the upstairs stations balancing huge glasses of wine so full that they almost spilled. I asked if there was a party going on upstairs, but the receptionist said 'No, it's just a regular saturday.' However, the waxer did a great job. I was going brazillian, and unlike my experience with this other place,  http://www.yelp.ca/biz... Kara's actually did remove every hair. The waxer (her name escapes me) even went over the area meticulously with a set of tweezers at the end, to make sure that every single hair was gone. The amounts of alcohol carried by the staff did make me a bit nervous, especially when sharp scissors are involved; but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that it was for customers.
