I'm happy with any deli in Vancouver that doesn't put mayo on a sandwich by default. (Those are far and few between!). Kaplan's serves their traditional sandwiches with just meat and nothing else (as they should be).
Yes, Kaplan's has the Montreal smoked meat available (which you can also find at PHAT and Zako's). But when it comes to brisket in a sandwich I hold a special fondness for NY style - so the highlight for me at Kaplan's is the steamed brisket, which is in a traditional NY deli style. Yes, it is probably an acquired taste if you didn't grow up on NY deli. But for me it brings back memories. It is the closest thing to a NY brisket sandwich I have found in Vancouver. They also have Dr. Brown's cel-rey soda, which for me is a necessary evil with the brisket.
This particular location is the 2nd location of Kaplan's. The original is over on Oak and is open later at night normally.
All of that said, if you are just visiting from NY, then don't bother stopping by - you'll be disappointed. This spot is more for those that crave NY deli and aren't visiting anytime soon!Listed in: Which wich is which?

I'd like a Reuben, Reuben. No that's not 2 sandwiches that's only one. Or maybe a Rachel, Rachel? Or a Norman, Norman.
But actually what I get is one of their giant hot dogs. Followed up by some classic New York Cheesecake. Then I promptly head down Burrard to St Paul's Hospital. Well- not really, so far my heart's still pumping.
This is the place to go for all your classic deli favorites. -

Have you ever wanted to have a fresh Montreal smoked meat sandwich? Well this is the place to go. The sandwich is basically two slices of rye with mustard and then wedged in between is 6 inches of the freshest meat you will find (flown in daily from Montreal) They serve the sandwich with a side of slaw and a pickle..... awww I think Bubby would be so proud of me ...masaltov!
