Hailing from Winnipeg, I was on the search for a great deli. My husband was laughing at my glee the first time we went to Kaplan's. We have been countless times since (even though it is a 'drive') and are never disappointed.
We take-out more often than eat in. We always buy bread because the sandwiches are so generous, we can take meat out of them and make more. I love the rye, challah and bread ends.
The reuben, corned beef and turkey are the sammies we return for. We also love the deli counter which has a whole turkey to get substantial slices from. Check out the 'grocery' section and freezer as well. I have scored great NY pizza dough and knishes. You can ask which day the soups and knishes etc...come in as they seem to go quick.
The front counter can be characters (or a bit brusque) at times but I have always found everyone helpful. -

Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich for me every time! What a mouth-watering bit of heaven-on-earth. I felt like having a second one last time. Fluffy pilings of the stuff. Apparently it's flown in every weak from Montreal. Stay away from the fries tho, a bit weird. But don't get the Not So Hungry version - you'll be sorry!
with fries and tip it was over $18 tho, so be prepared. The sandwich alone is $11.50 -

A bunch of us randomly decided to meetup for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. After a conversation about deli sandwiches, we ended up at Kaplan's. It feels like an old timey Jewish deli.
Colene's fervent recommendation was the potato latkes along with the grilled sandwiches.
Their selection of meaty sandwiches is glorious. I had a "not so hungry" size (which is plenty) Montreal smoked meat sandwich. It was meaty and hit the spot with some spicy mustard and dijon.
They had an assortment of takes on the Reuben sandwich with corned beef, pastrami, or turkey (the Rachel) along with sauerkraut and Swiss cheese. They all seemed quite meaty and tasty.
There's a cured or smoke meet for any taste. The selections are healthy and the meats are fresh and tasty with a premium cut.
Kaplan's is a solid pick for sandwiches and lunchtime dining. It has the charm of a classic diner. However, this place is strictly for carnivores. -

RUDE! Very, very rude. We arrived at 6:30 on a Saturday evening anticipating great deli. As we walked in the door the woman behind the counter shrieked, and I do mean shrieked: "We close at 7:00." We were then rushed through the meal from start to finish. It was an obvious imposition when we asked for water and a soda. At 6:40 we tried to order some bulk deli meat to take home where we could actually relax and enjoy it, and they simply refused to sell it to us. They said it was "off the slicer". Their early closing time was still 20 minutes away. I have truly never been treated like this before in any restaurant anywhere. We were out the door within 20 minutes of our arrival. Nothing would cause me to walk into this place again. The corned beef was great, but the bum's rush made the meal and the experience miserable.

This deli has been around for years. Grew up in the neighbourhood - imo this place is pretty iconic. Not much has changed in the interior of this deli bar - bench table seating, and the deli sandwiches still just as fantastic today as they were on the earlier days.
My favorite sandwiches: corned beef, montreal smoked meat with hot mustard, and their chicken liver - yah, I know, you gotta acquire a taste for it - NTL, it's one of my personal choices. Pickles are crisp and full of garlic. A choice of regular size, or large, for the hungrier crowd...
I have not sat down for a meal in place for some time, so I dont know what the service is like for the table staff, but I can tell you the veteran front end staff at the deli counter are "A #1", "thumbs up" people... -

I don't know much but I know good corned beef when I eat it. My mom used to make it from scratch. My bubbie taught her how and let me tell you -nothing comes close. Is it safe to continue?
I have had corned beef in NYC, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg. But in Vancouver Kaplan's is the best. By far. Not even open for debate as far as I'm concerned.
I go fairly often and the nice lady is extra generous if you talk about the old country. The old country being Winnipeg Manitoba where my Dad grew up. I always seem to walk out of there with an extra loaf of caraway rye under my arm.
Ask a Jew:
1) Never put mayonnaise on your corned beef. If you ask they will think you're a shmuk. A bissel spicy mustard & that's it.
2) Don't call it Montreal smoked meat if you mean corned beef. They're NOT the same thing.
3) Never ask for white bread. Rye -maybe. Caraway rye -absolutely.
4) Don't ask for an extra pickle you shnorer. If she likes you you will get one.
5) Don't ask for a half portion of meat, what are you a wimp?
A little secret; Smoked Winnipeg Goldeye is a type of pink fleshy oily fish that melts in your mouth and will blow your mind. Kaplan's (this location only) is the only place I know of west of Manitoba where you can get Winnipeg Goldeye. They used to only be in season for a couple weeks in August but now they are farmed so you can get them more regularly. It is a bit on the pricey side. A fish the size of a small trout will set you back about $15 but it is a delicacy that you must try. Do not put it on a bagel -this is not lox. It should be enjoyed alone or with a cracker. Like a good Vodka. Keep this to yourself though -they can be hard to come by.
Their pickles are very good. Take a jar home. They are not the same ones that come with your sandwich. They are better and the closest to homemade I've found in Vancouver. Their matzo ball soup is not bad either. Good kreplach -but better rugelah. Latkes are disappointing though. Ess gezunterhait.Listed in: Delis

You will have the BEST hot corned beef sandwich of your life...seriously..your life...served hot and piled like 3 feet high with delicious corned beef or montreal smoked meat... mustard..a little slaw and a kosher pickle..oy vey...even bubby couldn't top this masterful culinary delight...mmmmm...sorry but I think I may need a moment to reflect....*drool...
I also have to give a shout out for their matzo ball soup and latkes...pick up a jar of kosher pickles from the cooler on your way out and just try not to open on the bus ride home.... -

This is the only place in the city that can do a good meat sandwich. Trust me. I'm a big fan of their montreal smoked meat and corned beef. Get the regular size or the "not so hungry" (half the meat) which comes with tasty coleslaw & a pickle. Grab a side of latkes and you're set!
They also have a really comprehensive menu for breakfast/brunch, though I've never been. It will be my next visit! -

Be forewarned they are expensive but damn straight best Montreal smoked meat sandwich in the city. Make sure you get a pickle and the coleslaw is mighty fine too. It is pure shtick there with the characters in the kitchen and behind the counter.
Gotta try the rugelah, mmmmm rugelah. Cream cheese rolled up pastry the best is with cinnamon and raisin.
They have lots more but these are my faves.
Location is out in Marpole and parking not good but the experience is priceless. Good fun! -

I just Yelped the other location: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
The one thing I wanted to add about this spot (the original location) is that they also have a nice selection here of smoked fish. I love getting the smoked white fish and bringing it home to add to a bagel. My comfort food!Listed in: Which wich is which?

I'll have to take the word of those who ate the meaty stuff (all those positive reviews) that it's good. What I got was not. At all. I don't recommend the eggs, potatoes or anything else cooked in oil, which was clearly not fresh, not even close. We only came here to grab a quick lunch before a play at the theatre across the street. We should have eaten before coming to this neighborhood.

If you've been to Montreal, New York or LA then you've surely visited a Jewish Deli (hopefully) and you're craving a smoked-meat sandwich, Matzo Ball soup and a big fat Kosher pickle. This is one of Vancouver's most authentic places to get the experience, although Siegel's is pretty good too and I would prefer soups. The portions are giant and if you have a small appetite, they're not really open to half-sizing the portions. That means you'll end up paying a lot for a sandwich, but at least you can take it home. You must love rye bread and be willing to get a little dirty when you eat this sandwich.

The ultimate deli experience... In my weak moment, I happily tasted their corned beef and brisket, plus their pastrami ... And am very impressed ... I have not yet tasted anywhere with better, more straightforward deli meats.
