I may have found a neat little sushi place in the neighborhood.  I was walking with a friend and we were starving and saw Kaneda.  We thought, ok, another sushi place..... but tried it out because of the Granville island Beer special of $4.00.  I was surprised by this place.  It was big, spacious, there were tv's to watch the hockey game.  The waiters were friendly.

I expected ok sushi and was served sushi that was fresh and tasty.  The prices were very reasonable too.  They had lunch and dinner boxes to choose from.  They also had a Kaneda special menu where you can choose two items for $8.75 or three items for $10.50 and served with salad, pudding, and miso soup.  The platters came and they were yummy and not small at all.  You can also order the usual menu items robata, appetizers, noodles, sushi, sashmimi etc. from another menu.  This was one of the few places that had kaki pon.

I expected okay, and got yay !!

Cantonese owned? Sushi restaurant off Granville Street.  There weren't any eateries off Granville street (toward Vancouver) but the further you drive up along Granville street away from Vancouver, there are a lot of Asian restaurants.

Anyways..we stopped by here to eat because I wanted something bland (got the avocado sushi which was decent and I also got the beef Udon (huge portion, salty).

Nothing to rave about. It's on the second floor.

Metered parking until 9 or 10pm and we didn't have Canadian coins.

My new fav AYCE sushi joint complete with seasoned Japanese chefs, one with a wicked beard and spiky hair.

With at least two previous failed AYCE at this location, I'm rooting for these guys. I think they need a legit Ninja on the sidewalk to get people in.

Quality is definitely a step above the crap that's out there. Sushi is actually made fresh and the sashimi is the prefect temperature, not half frozen! Their robata items are awesome, especially the Saba (Mackerel). Baby octopus teriyaki is not rubbery like a lot of places.

Worth the extra bit of coin for far better quality.

Quick place to stop in for food...

AYCE is not for the faint of heart. If you can stomach it, $13.xx is a good price at lunch time.

I had the California roll and beef Teri roll that came with miso soup and salad. Totally reasonable price at $8.xx. Taste is not amazing, but not terrible.

Kaneda is true to what it is, a lot of food for little price.

This Japanese joint is great! The service was exceptional and the prices reasonable. They had rolls on their menu that I've never heard of before, so I was feeling adventurous and tried a few, I just can't seem to remember what they are called.

After we had made our orders, the waiter kindly came back and had mentioned that perhaps we had ordered too much. I've never had the experience of a restaurant telling us that we ordered too much before, especially an Asian one. Usually they want us to order more and more. But perhaps they have discovered a better business practice, preventing food from being wasted.

Me and my friends ordered from the regular menu because we didn't think we could eat enough to justify 22 dollars for all you can eat dinner.

That's another Japanese restaurant off my list. I learned an interesting fact on the night we came here. Vancouver had the most Sushi joints per capita in the world, even more than Japan! Shocking! This truly is a city of sushi lovers.

From reading the other reviews posted, it seems people are polarized on the subject on whether or not Kaneda is a worthwhile place to go for all you can eat Sushi in Vancouver. I am of the opinion that for the prices they charge and the quality of food, you would be best to hold onto your money and go down the street to much superior sushi joints (all within a few minutes walk). I've gone twice (hoping that first time was just a fluke), but both times (a Monday night and a Thursday night) we experienced extremely poor service and only ok food quality. Both evenings, the restaurant was very quiet, with only 5 or 6 tables filled at max.

On the first visit, when we first walked in, we were told by the one of the chefs behind the sushi bar that someone would seat us shortly. So, we waited.  After a while, I caught the attention of a host/server walking by and asked if there was someone going to seat us.  The server said they could and took us to a table.  The waiting theme was repeated after we sat down for menus, order slips, tea, and all subsequent orders.  Our initial order was the largest, asking for about ~20 things for 2 people.  This may sound like a lot, but each item you order only has 1 or 2 pieces (1 order of tuna sashimi is 1 piece; 1 order of California rolls is 2 pieces NOT a full roll). Dissappointly, we only received one item at a time.  Nothing ever arrived at the same time as another thing. Over the course of an hour, finally everything had come out. Since, it wasn't a lot of food for two people (2 soups, an order of edamame, and then 8 pieces of sushi for each person), we wanted some more... after all it was all you could eat (which is $23 per person).  Flagging down a sever was difficult, as all the servers that delivered our food said they weren't actually our server, instead they were servers from other sections just helping out.  This seemed bizarre to me since there were at least 4 servers, with only 5 or 6 tables filled.  It seemed hard to believe not one could help us out.

Two hours had passed and we finally were nearing our fill with receiving only a few more items coming to our table.  However, it was hard not to notice a group of people came in about 1.5 hours after us and had received much more food and attention than us.  To add to this, the other group was almost finished after being there 30 min, instead of us for nearly two hours. It then became a task trying to pay our bill, it was almost enough to want to walk out. We wanted to give the restaurant money and it was like pulling teeth to find someone that would accept it.  To add to our experience, when we paid the "suggested" tip on the machine was 18%. To me, 18% for an all-you-can-eat-almost-buffet-style setting seems a little steep as something to expect.  Maybe it would have been justified if the food was phenomenal, but as far as sushi goes, it was so-so at best, even for all you can eat (which you can accept as being a little let in quality due to the volume). To give you an idea, as a baseline I normally order tuna sashimi.  At Kaneda, it was a little tough and strongly tasting of lemon. For high end tuna sashimi, it should almost melt in your mouth and not taste "fishy" at all. I would not expect to receive high end sushi at an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant; however, personally I was left a little disappointed.  It was still very edible, just not to the level that you can find in many other places in the lower mainland.

We decided to give Kaneda the benefit of the doubt and try it again about a month later on a Thursday night.  Unfortunately, our service experience was almost exactly the same as our first visit and the sushi quality was still simply ok.  For higher quality sushi (but at a much higher price) I'd go to Tojo's a block or two away on Broadway, or for all you can eat sushi with the addition of Korean BBQ for a buck or two more, I'd recommend Kyo instead on Granville Street.

All-in-all, for the quality of sushi and quality service, I would go to one of the many other sushi restaurants all within a few minutes of Kaneda.

This new restaurant took over the space of Fish on Rice's Broadway location.

I'm happy to say that they did a lot of renovation and even changed the layout of the front entrance so there's more open space and a proper waiting area. No more cramped benches that either had you sitting and staring awkwardly at the cash counter or feeling you're getting in the way of the waiting staff.

The dingy atmosphere of the old restaurant has been replaced by dark hardwood floors and colourful (but tasteful) tapestry accents.  All the seating benches for the large groups were refinished and all the tables and chairs were either refinished or replaced.

I've only had their take-out because AYCE is just too much for me. Their quality is on par with most good quality restaurants and their prices are average for the area. I can't wait to dine-in to see what that experience is like!

The staff is all new, including their sushi chefs. When I've called in for take-out I was greeted by someone whose first language was not English. She wanted me to just give her the menu number instead of the name of the dish and it resulted in them picking a wrong menu item.

TIP: if you're ordering take-out, tell them the NAME of the dish. With the language barrier, they're less likely to write down the wrong name as they are in writing down a wrong menu item number. Also, their take-out menu is the exact same (in content and price) as their "House" menu on their website.

Take-out deets: 15% off / Free delivery if it's between 6pm-10pm (and if there's a driver that day, so I discovered), within 3 km radius, and a minimum order of $30.

I've ordered take-out from them twice now and I've been happy with the quality of the maki rolls, tempura, robata, and sashimi.

-1 star because I have yet to experience their dine-in service.

Finally a great all you can eat sushi restaurant!

I came here a couple times before when it was Fish on Rice, and was never impressed. Now it's way better. It looks like they took all the old worn out and tacky furniture and replaced it with new modern furniture.

The food is great, there's all the usual all you can eat staples you get at most places, plus a few items you don't see at other places. Nigiri sushi like Lobster and abalone, plus Octopus and Unagi rolls and dons.

The chefs greet you as you come in a similar style as the Izakya's downtown which is a cool touch.

Better then most all you can eat places in the city, highly recommended.

It's the new AYCE on the block! (AYCEOTB?)  Service was quite friendly, with the manager coming around about halfway through the meal to make sure that we were getting all the items that we were ordering and offering to check up on things that hadn't arrived yet.  The fish in the sushi tasted pretty fresh and nothing was mushy or icy.

Like other reviews have said they did a fair amount of renovations on the space to make it look less like a cafeteria.

Would come back again next time I have that craving to eat a ridiculous amount of food!  After 9 pm they have the late night pricing.

I was excited to try this place. Late night for $13.95 - all you can eat with a great selection on the menu. I thought you couldn't go wrong, boy I was wrong. Late night is 8PM-11PM. My partner and I arrived at 10, and handed in our order sheet by 10:10. We got our food and our edamame was ICE COLD, frozen!! I thought these were suppose to be boiled, uhm warm at the least bit. On the menu sheet for a dollar extra, you could get unlimited sashimi. That was til' the waitor told me " we cannot charge you extra for the extra 6 pieces of sashimi that you wanted" WTF? false advertisement. To top it all off, last call was at 10:20 and the other waitress was rushing us out of there before my food could even be swallowed. She even handed us the bill and asked if we could pay for it first. Kaneda is open til' 11, why the f*** are you rushing me out by 10:20, I just got seated. Never coming back, SO SO dissapointed.
