Awesome. I love Kafka's. I've never had a bad coffee here. I'm an espresso girl, so I haven't had their drip, but they use an amazing pour-over method that I know is great. As someone who was a serious barista for years I am a huge fan of this place that to me, has their formula down: just coffee, but really awesome coffee. There are a few baked goods but not a lot of food. It's about the bean juice. Great room, lots of sizeable tables and local artwork. I've always gotten really lovely service, warm and friendly conversation from the lovely staff who remembered my drink right away, and make it skillfully and promptly every time. It's my go-to place in that Main-and-Broadway-ish area.

Want to have your coffee made with a little romance? Go here.

Got introduced to this place because they allow vaping inside and it's a central location.

Space is airy and bright and there is free parking around this area if you know where to look.

Coffee is pretty good (they fetishize over brewing methods) and not a bad place to get a cup of coffee and people watch or do a bit of work (free WiFi).  I did feel a bit out of place being the only non-Macbook person here and not surfing Facebook or Pitchfork.  Excuse me, some of us actually work on our laptops and not surf in public to look cool.

However, as with most places in this area - it's heavy with hipsters and you get a bit of that attitude from the staff.  The fact they were playing some old school hip hop made me smile -- but when I look at the hipster staff and trying to figure out if they actually enjoy this music or playing it because it's 'so obscure' -- it made me angry.  It made me very angry.  Fuck me, I enjoy the same music as hipsters?

I immediately packed up my things, got into my car, blared Top 40 and kept chanting, "I love mainstream.  I'm not a hipster".

Are you a hipster? Do you want a place to surf facebook on your MacBook with 20 other people doing the exact same thing? This place feels so wannabe indie that I had to leave. I know that's how coffee shops are, but for some reason it feels like this place is trying to hard.

Coffee was ok, not the worst I've had in Vancouver at all, but there are better places for sure.

I always pass by this interesting coffee shop but I never had a good reason to stop by. I finally was in the neighborhood with a bunch of friends and decided to drop in to grab a coffee. I'm not a big coffee fan but the columbian drip coffee was smooth and sweet. The decor is very minimal but comfortable. Like any coffee shop you'll find a bunch of people either studying or working away on their laptops. A great alternative to the packed downtown coffee places.

Ordering was confusing, as every person I talked to seemed to send me to someone else, and after filling out my coffee forms I couldn't get the last guy to talk to me at all. He just sat with his back to me and wrote in a big book. Eventually I got my coffee, and while at first it tasted burnt, the barista talked me out of that and in fact it was delicious. Like the croissant I don't remember ordering. Or being served, actually. It was just sort of there.
When I left they seemed legitimately sad to see me go, desperate even, and for reasons I can't explain at the moment I turned around and stayed until they closed, at which point they kicked me out. It's been my regular coffee place for a few years now.

I'm afraid to spill my artist secret. I come to Kafka's to draw. It's an awesome place to draw. The tables are large so they are perfect for drawing, and small sketch meet ups. You have room for your laptop, a sketchbook and a coffee. The cafe often has artist shows up on the walls, and it's a cafe with good lighting?! You can actually see what you're doing! They also let me sit for ages and don't complain even if I've just bought a single tea and I spend hours doodling. I've never been shooed away (except at closing time). They have free Wi-Fi for those in need of the net.

I can't critique this place on the coffee. I don't drink coffee. I cannot say I like the pastries very much, nor the prices of the pastries but I can say for sure the tea is great and not THAT overpriced. I'm not sure how much tea you get "to go" for example however, if you stay in you get a teapot to yourself, and get free hot water refills. Now considering this is actually loose leaf tea compared to many cafes who charge $2.00 for an awful packaged tea bag that I can buy in a set of 20 for $2 at grocery store. This considered I cannot accuse Kafka's for overcharging for tea especially if you drink in the cafe and take advantage of the refills. In the summer the lemonade is to die for! The service here is excellent, and according to my friends (the coffee drinkers) the coffee is good.

    My quips are this

-lack of food. If I want to eat I have to leave
-this place is not wheelchair accessible which is a pity for such a nice location. It has  a very small washroom. So bringing someone in a wheelchair here is out of the question.

A favourite coffee place for sure. The only thing that holds me back from giving it 5 stars is the price....it is a shade pricey, so I probably wouldn't be going there for my daily cup of coffee, but a great place to go on weekends and read the paper while sipping this amazing coffee. The baristas are serious about coffee without being pretentious about it.

For me coffee has always been like AC/DC.  Love the band, hate the fans.  There's something about Vancouver's coffee culture that was a total turn off before I started coming to Kafka's.

The baristas here are nice people.  They want you to be happy with your coffee and don't talk down to you if you're asking about different beans, roasts or preparation methods.  The beans are among the best you can get in the city.

Despite the fact that you have to wade through 30 year old hipsters with old timey moustaches, keffiyehs and macbook pros to get to the counter it's certainly worth it.  I wouldn't want to get a coffee from anywhere else in Mount Pleasant.

So if you want a top notch cup of coffee, high quality service and a chance to gawk at the hipster freakshow, come to Kafka's.  I'll be the nondescript conservatively dressed local parked in the corner listening to AC/DC.

Here's something I didn't expect to say: "More Expensive than Starbucks".

You don't hear that line too often do you? Today I felt like John Travolta in the movie Pulp Fiction when they charged him $5 for a Milk Shake. It might have been really good but $5 was a bit pricey. At Kafkas the metaphorical Milk Shake was definitely pricey, but it was not that good.

I looked up at their board and saw that Tea was $3. Now I didn't say Tea Latte. I said Tea. Just Tea is $3 before tax. And their pastry's are no exception either. Plus, they are pretty bland to say the least. So does this place over charge? Yes. Completely. It offends me how much they charge.

My theories as to why these sort of Hippie, Grass Roots independent stores charge so much is because its a cool niche NOT to be Starbucks. They want to charge you because they are local. Not sure why local means they can charge more...but its a good marketing technique.

So that takes away a star there. The place also doesn't have any plugs. Okay. They have three, maybe four plugs but they are in one section for the most part and about 80% of the tables don't have access.

The Staff are friendly. They weren't friendly to my "WHAT?" reaction when they charged for my Tea. But in other situations I've seen them be very friendly.

All in all the food and drinks are less than good when compared to even Starbucks. All natural doesn't have to mean I pay more for tasteless pastry's. In fact you should impress me because I know for a fact that all natural can also be all good. But at Kafkas it is not. The Staff are great, but the WIFI tends to be weak, there aren't a lot of plugs and you will get charged an arm and a leg for Tea that hardly deserves the name.

Kafkas makes it on my "just doesn't cut it" list. There's a Blenz up the street. Check that out. Great Hot Chocolates. And "Our Town" nearby is pretty good too. Unless you want air conditioning.

I love the atmosphere in this place... it's large but not too large with plenty of tables and really excellent coffee. My only complaints are not enough plugs for laptops and not enough food for my munchies.

But I don't care cause the place is comfy and the coffee is really really really good!

Driving along Main Street, I just had to swerve into the nearest side street after catching sight of a coffee shop named Kafka. But there is nothing brooding or alienated about this buzzing and artsy café. Furthermore, all patrons seem to be well-adjusted graphic artists and students surfing the Internet on their MacBooks or drawing in their sketchbooks.

The transportation-themed decor is whimsical and amusing. Contemplate the light fixtures by the front windows and the painted skateboards. A variety of communal and individual seating options includes contemporary plastic chairs, traditional wooden ones, and two sofas.

I find the espresso pricing to be rather high: an AMERICANO costs $3.25. In terms of strength and taste, I prefer the Americano up the street at JJ Bean's. Stick to the DRIP COFFEE: Kafka's pours a solid cup at their pour-over station ($2.50). You can also have coffee brewed in a syphon.

Beans are sourced from a roaster in Seattle. Baked goods are from Pane from Heaven in Kitsilano. It's some delicious but expensive sugar: cookies and brownies are $2.75 for one or $3.75 for two. On my last visit I tried the salted caramel cookie.

A great space for work or study. Friendly, relaxed yet enthusiastic staff. CASH/DEBIT only. Free WiFi.

Great lattes! Nice atmosphere. Would have overall been 3 stars if not for the super friendly staff. When I thought I only had my credit card on me (which they don't accept) the guy who took my order offered to let me pay the next time I was in my neighborhood. I found my debit card at the bottom of my bag eventually but really appreciated the gesture.

Such a good location for people watching too.

Kafkas, Main street's java sweetheart, sits conveniently on Main at Broadway. There's *some* free parking nearby which is a bonus if you'd rather spend money on something you can put in your mouth. Um...this is awkward.

The highlight of my visit? Their soy vanilla latte. Ornately decorated with a pretty leaf design, it both looked and tasted so good, I forgot there was soy in it! Kafkas coffee-soy-vanilla foam could be dessert for me, it's thick, creamy, a touch sweet, insane. I ordered another. Look out Vancity, this girl's outta control.

After two large soy lattes I was pretty pumped on life.

Magic in a mug. Do it.

Went here for a coffee UYE with some fellow Yelpers.

My overall impression: It's okay. Nice pictures on the walls, nice big windows, nice environment, and aside from the fact that for Main and Broadway, it wasn't oppressively hipster-filled, there wasn't anything that left sparkling memories in my brain.

The staff really care about the foam art on lattes and other drinks, which is a plus, and the baked goods are cute. I had the Mexican hot chocolate (with soy milk), and a chocolate chip muffin, which was a bit small for the price, and came wrapped in one of those scalloped, swirly gold and brown papers you normally see Chinese baked goods in. Fun detail.

For $7 and change, though, I wasn't too impressed, when the girl at the counter put the muffin on a plate that had a hair on it (I noticed and asked for a new plate), and the hot chocolate didn't taste Mexican until the very end. There wasn't a hint of cinnamon or chili powder to liven things up until I met the bottom of the cup (which was also a bit small, in my opinion), and my tongue was met with the sandy texture of ground cinnamon in a liquid. The highlight of my drink was the decoration on top.

If a place charges more money for smaller portions, it should be because the emphasis is on quality and/or service, preferably both, which, unfortunately, wasn't the case for this visit. I don't go to coffee shops without a purpose (meeting people, etc), so a return trip is unlikely.

I'm here at Kafka right now in this BUSY blue & white backdrop, wall art'd, spotlight'd Cafe. It almost feels like a bit of the aesthetics was made with a child in mind as I look at the front lighting of Train, Motorcycle, and Plane reminiscent of a Toy store.

Wow, as I watch my Cappuccino($3.25) being made by a Bottomless Portafilter. I can see why locals suggest this space. It has the perfect beats from the speakers that keep the atmosphere alive while the customers speak furiously back and forth in full intense conversations.

The washroom takes you to another world all together. You have to see the Cafe itself and then explore the washroom to see what I mean.

Excellent choice for surfing and slurping.

I finally got to try Kafka's yesterday.  I had the Chai, and I'm reeeallly picky about chai. I was asked if I wanted it spicy, as if he read my mind. YES!! and it was delish.
I love owner operated shops. They are the twinkle in my eye for so many reasons. Individuality and personal attention for starters. I found owner Aaron Kafka to be knowledgeable, friendly and sweet! Yes, that's his name,... and not just that he is well-read.

The cafe is in a good location near to everything, the walls are nicely decorated with local artist work and it seems like a good spot for a meeting, with a long table in the middle and lots of natural light from the front.
But speaking of lights.... you will laugh out loud as I did when you see the lighting in the front. I'll let you check it out for yourselves. :)

Kafka's is one of my favourite cafes in Vancouver at the moment. They are very, very serious about their coffee here. I love it when business owners are clearly passionate about their product: not only does it make me happy to see passion in action, but it also contributes to a superior product. All of the staff, too, seem to know their stuff.

The espresso here is excellent, and the wide variety of brewing methods thrills me. They even brew with Aeropress here! Comprehensive menu of espresso beverages, including the less common (e.g. Spanish latte). Very nice selection of teas as well. I am a fan of the space and the art that lines the walls.

I haven't tried any of the food/treats here as cafe food isn't really my thing, but some of the things that come up on their Twitter feed intrigue me...must return for choco chip peanut butter cookies.

I've been dying to visit Kafka's after all the positive comments I've been hearing. Unfortunately I kept missing the closing time, or found myself in need of a coffee in a different part of town on weekends.
Today, I made a special trip out for a sought-after Americano.

Immediate let-down. The tall Americano is $3.25 and is tiny, and underwhelming upon appearance. See the photo I took if you don't believe me. The taste is ok, but definitely nothing that can't be duplicated at any middle of the road coffee shop in town.

In tribute to Franz Kafka, this place place would be a perfect setting for Czech Anarchist Club meetings, however, my coffee was done before I had the chance to think the words "socialist revolution". If you need a space with wifi and a place to sit and show others that you may be a literary scholar, then this is a good place for you. If you love great coffee, you deserve better. I know I do, so unless something changes, I won't be back.

Ok, so I came again - this time to try out their drip coffee, which is among the cheaper products (in terms of price). I liked the drip coffee, but it is way too overpriced ($2.50 for 10 oz)! My final review for Kafka's is: the coffee is great, but it is not worth every penny. In other words, the price is unreasonable to the point that it almost obscures the high quality of the coffee. I will not be coming again anytime soon.

After many weeks of meaning to drop by and say hello and see what all the fuss is about, I managed to drop in this past Saturday afternoon. The place was busy, and there were almost as many laptops as people.

It was a challenge to find a place to sit, until someone (who it turns out was Aaron, the owner) suggested the lone person with both laptop & iPhone occupying the table for four might move to another table already littered with laptops.

This is certainly the place to blog or do the art thing. The wall nearest our table was hung with several very interesting pieces, the largest of which loomed over a young asian digital artist, complete with graphics tablet and stylus, creating something impressive that bore something of the self-portrait about it in the cartoon-like stylings of the figure she was
    refining.

A quick enquiry at the counter led to me discuss a latté and something chai-like.

"Do you call them specific names, or will 'regular' and 'large' work?"
"Just call them by their regular names."
"Ok, I'll have a medium latté."
"We don't have a medium, we have a tall and a Grandé."
[facepalm] "OK, I'll have a Grandé then. And a Chai latté."
We don't have chai lattés right now; we're still trying to find the right blend."
    "Anything cold?"
"No, we don't really do cold drinks."
"Can we have two glasses of water."
"You can help yourself to the water right there." pointing to the jugs and glasses stacked up beside the pick-up station.

Lest readers think that this exchange is criticism, please be reassured. It was just funny, and as my partner in crime and I were new to Kafka's, and probably increased the average age of the room by five years, that made us double-n00bs.

In the end, we decided on a Grandé latté for me and a twist on a London Fog for her, on the advice of the barista. This meant replacing the Earl Grey with Orange Spice tea, which delivered a wonderful bouquet and a velvety smooth texture that was naturally sweet, and reportedly very satisfying. My latté sported the best foam art I can recall, and a smooth richness that also excelled any other latté in recent memory. The art held its shape right to the very last sip, and the flavour stayed consistently pleasurable to the bottom as well.

We were a little mystified how we were able to stuff ourselves with chinese baked goods earlier in the day for less money than two admittedly VERY special hot drinks, but the quality is undeniable.

Congratulations, Aaron, for creating a great, genre-winning place. I hope my review wasn't too Kafka-esque for you.

Wow i didn't think it was possible but this place is possibly the best coffee in Vancouver. It is also the most expensive (which i have yet to understand), and is coincidentally located next to the cheapest coffee in town (Tim Hortons).  This is the only reason it lost a star. Sorry Kafka!

I overheard the barista saying there beans come from Japan?! I could be mistaken but if that's true i would understand more about the pricing.

Nice spacious seating, couches, and tables.
I liked it when a girl was taking up a whole 4 seat table with all her stuff and the place was packed, the barista asked her to share her space. So awesome. *take note Our Town table horders*

There treats looked delicious but i managed to say no to them for now. It would be nice if they got some light snack options beyond pastries but at their coffee price point they probably don't need to sell sandwiches.

I really like the photography that was hanging in there as well.

With that trademark "don't care" attitude as many other Main Street spots, Kafka has many things that I look for in a coffee shop:

-Free Wi-Fi (it's the gobligook of numbers and letters if you're reading this while trying to surf for free)
    -Spacious
    -Lots of outlets
    -Awesome art on the walls
-Oh yeah, and great tasting caffeine.

Should a large americano really be $4... I'm not so sure it's in check with other comparable spots, but perhaps it was a triple rather than a double. Regardless of the fact that it was pricey, it was smooth and cool, perfect on a hot day. Sorry Gene, I think I've just found my Main Street main bean squeeze. The coffee's better, even if it's pricier.

This is the best coffee shop in South Main. Period.

Small little cafe beside the fire destroyed building on Main Street.

Really nice coffee. Had a coffee from a roaster in Seattle. Can't remember the name but thought the coffee was really nice.

Going to check out Genes down the street to compare.

I always find it funny that between Broadway and 10, there are 4, 5 (?!) coffee shops, but only one with coffee worth drinking. Kafka's is such a pleasant alternative to the coffee shops on Main.

It's lit by sunlight, and just feels ... invigorating to be in, unlike the other shops around that are lit artificially and just uncomfortable. They display purchasable art from local artists, which reminds you of the true essence of Main Street, and how far many have strayed from that. But I've digressed.

It wasn't just their drip coffee that won me over, but it was their Spanish Latte. A coffee after my own heart, this latte is made with condensed milk.

I took off a star because it gets a little chilly in there - great in the summer, but not ideal in all the other seasons. The seating arrangement could also be improved. While common seating around the large table is nice, it gets a little crowded and isn't conducive to private conversations.

Wonderful! I've been walking past this all week, and decided to go in today, and I'm so glad I did! This was the best latte I've had so far in Vancouver! Super nice flavor, not too strong, and lovely and creamy. The guy serving was nice and polite. There was cool art adorning the walls, and strange hipster types scattered about (one guy was browsing on his iPad inbetween drawing a large image of a busty fairy!). Great for people watching ;) Will definitely be returning!

I was expecting a little more decor but it's a great space no less, open and simple. Coffee wise, a place that knows Guatemala coffee must know good coffee in my opinion. They took time to explain the science behind the one-cup-brew concept, how water is heated close to boiling then calculatedly poured into the percolator in good time.

Although  I enjoyed my coffee, I'm not fully convinced that was the best coffee I've had or that that is the best way to make coffee. Perhaps another cuppa or two might change my mind.

This place sort of quietly opened this week. Their coffee is outrageous and will surely be known as a coffee hot spot in a city loaded with coffee shops.

Their baked goods are also awesome! Check them out now before they get too busy.

So you may not have had my breakfast sandwich but you had my spanish latte.

Kafka's; the new (few months old) addition to Main had caught my attention for a while now but I never crossed the street till last Friday.

Needing a good caffeine fix, possibly with a side of breakfast we decided to give Kafka's a try.

The place was hosting a exhibition or event of some kind. This was of course pre-caffeine so I couldn't tell you which. Despite not being able to fill the "side of breakfast" part of our morning, the owner who's name I also cannot remember (again pre-caffeine) convinced us to stay. The collection on the walls was amazing and held my attention up until I saw "Spanish Latte".

Now I don't know if I just have been missing it on our local coffee boards but I haven't seen one of these outside of Artigiano.  This dark, sweet coffee was made perfectly.

I should also mention that although they didn't have the breakfast we were looking for they did have a great selection of pastries.

    A welcome addition to Main!

Excellent Stuff. They use a machine similar to the Slayer but somehow the crema' is not the same level but perfect IMO. The results speak for them self. I think a tie for the best Cafe in Vancouver Kafka and 49th Parallel rule!
Very friendly staff had a nice chat about various type of coffee machines and whether I could eat my Thomas Haas Dbl Baked Croissant there :) they do have have some food items there but was allowed to enjoy my Croissant.

My favorite coffee place now. The Spanish Latte (Cafe Con Leche) was very good. Friendly coffee geeks work there, and refreshingly they have no attitude.

Super lame service. I'm willing to accept that it was a one off and maybe they aren't usually this sloppy. It's really cute in there so I'd give it a shot again the next time I'm in the neighbourhood, but the service I got today was so bad that I felt it was worth reviewing.

Anyone who complains about what they pay for a drink at Kafka's must have zero taste. Call me a snob, but I would take a slap in the face from one of the baristas to get my hands on one of their lattes.
