    I love this place.

I bring all my out of town guests (particularly those that say "I don't like sushi") to Kadoya. It's just one of those places that makes sushi that even your meat and potatoes grandmother would appreciate.

I actually order from them (for pick-up) so regularly I've got their number in my phone (yup - I'm not ashamed to say it!)

    My favourites:
    - Snow White Roll (it mixes prawns and coconut... amazing)
    - Tuna tataki
    - Spicy salmon roll

Also - of you are eating in the restaurant - don't be afraid to order the wine. It might be cheap - but it's actually decent (goes decently well with the sushi).

Only fault: they don't deliver ;)

I give the food an enthusiastic meh.
    Service sucks.
Benches so narrow you get a glute and leg workout trying to keep yourself on the bench.
Went here because of the high ratings.
The tea is good.....oh wait, they charge for tea....

I think all the sushi places on Denman are crap this time of year, Kadoya is no exception. Ordered the sashimi tonight, which is very hit and miss, and it just.. wasn't good. I won't be returning until Summer.

This is a great restaurant with good sushi quality. I have been there more than 10 times now and have always been amazed by the variety of the food they offer.
I didnt rate a five because it's not super classy place but the sushi is really good and interesting.

We just got home after eating dinner box A and dinner box B. You certainly get a good size meal for your money, but I was not very enthusiast about the food.
The service was very friendly tough.
Tempura was tasteless, but the rest of the food was ok. Sashimi was cut so thick that I could barely fit it in my mouth. (nice you get so much fish, not so nice you can barely eat it)
    California rolls tasted to mayonnaisy...

I stopped in here to grab a bite on the way to a friend's place.  It was recommended to me because of the generous sized (but not oversized) pieces sushi, freshness, and value.

I had Sushi Combo A (2 Salmon nigiri, 2 Tuna nigiri, and 2 Ebi nigiri) and a miso soup to go.  I was hungry at the time and, after consuming my meal, was very pleased to find that a) my friend's recommendation was spot on, b) my appetite was sated, and c) I spent less than $10 on a meal without buying greasy fast food.

I hope to come back again to sample more of the menu.

LOVE this place! It's super-crowded yes, and that means you can't really help but listen in on the conversations of your neighbours and vice-versa. Luckily...most of the time, people here tend to be awesome.
The boyfriend and I met a lovely couple who invited us to their place to watch the fireworks from their balcony over English Bay...not too shabby!

The service here - also great. The waitresses are cute as buttons, and super attentive and polite. Food comes out fast and is always fresh and delicious.

The menu is also very cool - some of the rolls, while not traditional per se, are incredibly creative and always deeeelish. I am in love with the Rainbow Roll and the Spider Roll. Like I said though, you won't really get much in the way of traditional sushi here. The rolls are MASSIVE with a lot of rice and a lot of extras. But if, like me, that's the way you sometimes like to roll (heh) then you're golden.

Give it a shot - the one thing I know about this place for sure is that its either your kinda place, or it really isn't. So give it a shot, because if it is - it SO is!

I wanted to like Kadoya, I really did. So much so that I've been back THREE times! But not once did I enjoy my meal. Sigh. Maybe I'm just a harsh sushi critic?

Regardless, after the third visit I have finally come to the conclusion of uhgghh. Massive rolls with way too much rice, low-quality, not-so fresh salmon (ack! blech!), and poor sashimi cuts (sushi snob alert!) have made for a pretty meh Kadoya sushi experience.

Too much emphasis on "special" rolls, and not enough on the basics maybe? I don't know for sure. I do know that I'm not going to give this one another chance.

I find it hard to give 5 stars to anything and I'd really like to give Kadoya 4.5 - but it left me with such a positive impression I'm rounding up to 5.

I read some of the reviews (especially the negative ones) and I think it is worth stating that this is not some sort of high-class foody destination. It is perfect for what it is and not really comparable to a fine-dining experience.

What it is perfect for is a simple sushi restaurant. This is where you go when you are near Davie st. and you think to yourself "I want some above average sushi". It is typically small with seats for about 30-40 people and even then you will be crammed together. The prices are not the cheapest sushi you can find in the West End (I doubt it is the most expensive) but the price at least matches the quality.

I ordered spicy tuna rolls and the tuna and salmon sashimi. The Sashimi came within 2 minutes and at first I was a little miffed that the pieces were so large. I was ok with the overall portion (I would say it was generous) but each chunk of fish was quite large. Then I ate one and it turned out to be a perfect size - and it was high quality. I'm a bit snobby about sushi and this stuff satisfied me. The spicy tuna was also fantastic tasting.

This isn't the best sushi I have ever eaten but I guarantee I will be back to this place when I want something a step above average cheap Vancouver sushi. When I travelled people would ask me what I missed about Vancouver - and I'd say the sushi restaurants; this place is a perfect example of the kind of restaurant I'd be thinking of.

Wow this place sets the bar for quality of sushi for me.  they have two locations and both are fantastic food, one has a neat balcony with a view of englsih bay which is prime on a nice day... but what makes this place so good is their massive prawn tempura, their sushi/sashimi combo and the dragon roll.  everytime I eat sushi I always compare to Kadoya and nothing has come close yet...also my bill for two people has never been over $50 and we are always stuffed!  I'm very impressed

We were looking for something within walking distance of our hotel on our last night in Vancouver.  We showed up around 7 PM and the tiny space was packed, but they managed to seat us within a couple of minutes.  My boyfriend had the chicken teriyaki and I had the beef teriyaki.  I wish we could have tried some of their sushi but I was suffering from a horrible cold and couldn't really chew very well with my mouth closed (more information than you needed I know).  They do seem to have a pretty hefty take out customer base, had I known that I would have gotten some sushi to go!  In any case, their teriyaki is really good, but we both agreed their beef was the better of the two.

I plan on coming back on our next trip to Vancouver, but hopefully getting something to go.  The space here is so tiny you're only a few inches from the tables next to you.  It got pretty old listening to all the first date conversation from the tables next to us.

Oh My Gosh!! An utter disappointment!! I have no idea how this place scored 4 star rating.. I took my mom and boyfriend here, confident in my choice with the help of Yelp, and it turned out to be a disaster... We ordered so much from the menu from sashimi, rolls, and hot food, so my opinion about their menu is not skewed in any form.. People, who love Japanese cuisine and know about how real sushi should taste like, I guarantee you would not enjoy dining here.

When I'm feeling up for some fancier sushi at a great price, I can easily count on Kadoya for consistently good good. It's apparently so good that my friend from the t-dot, who's only been here a week, has eaten at this establishment three times already!

One of my friends is currently on a diet cleanse, so he was pretty limited in his choices. When his rolls arrive and he saw he forgot to say "wild" before the word "salmon", the service was so nice - they took it back without complaint and remade it for him. Bonus points!!

The remaining four of us split 5 rolls. It's so much more fun coming here with more people since there's so much more variety. I picked the sakura roll (spicy tuna with chopped scallop) which is my regular, the friend on a diet recommended the volcano roll (spicy salmon with chopped scallop and black sesame sauce) with a hint of jealousy in his voice, and the rest of the choices were a queen roll, rainbow roll, and the stanley park roll.

The clear winner was the volcano roll. The spiciness of the salmon is neutralized by the black sesame sauce making this roll totally flavourful and very unique. It'll be my new favourite pick from now on!

Also loved their wakame salad, it's a good portion size and seasoned well (not too salty or oily). Mmm, now I'm thinking about another evening of sushi. Oh boy.

This isn't your grand-dad's sushi and that's fine with me.

I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to sushi, and for a long time I was perfectly happy with my toro, salmon or bbq eel nigiri, with the occasional dynamite roll being as adventurous as I got. Finally I was convinced to try Chinese-run Kadoya and I loved it. I've tried about a half dozen of the rolls there and they're all winners, plus the service is super fast. It's a small space, but they really pack in the customers and I can see why - they're in demand. The one thing I will say about their sushi after trying a bunch, is that they all taste somewhat similar - however, I haven't tried them all so I can't say this with 100% certainty.

A friend suggested this place to me for dinner, so we staggered over for a dinner date. The tables are a little too close for comfort, unless you end up meeting three gay guys that decide they love you and want to buy you a round of drinks. How could I say no? I have to admit though, if I didn't have such fabulous neighbours, I think I would have been bumping elbows with them, and butting into their conversation."Bitch pleeeease!" It's true, after dinner we were all BFFs and they even hugged us goodnight, I'm sure it had nothing to do with the level of their intoxication....

I had the gomae, which was really good, it has the right amount of sauce on it and didn't taste like frozen spinach like I find a lot of sushi places do. I also had sushi combo C which was a veggie roll, an avocado roll and a cucumber roll. The rolls were pretty huge, so I ended up picking a lot of the rice off cuz I didn't think I would be able to finish it. In the end, I still didn't.

My dinner date order the salmon tataki, which was a large plate of a dozen thinly sliced pieces of raw flesh. They gave her the tataki sauce on the side, which apparently she didn't like, so it became my soy sauce. I fucking LOVE the tataki sauce they use, it is so delicious and vinegary! I guess my friend didn't like it, but she ordered warm sake and drank that. I think in the end I was the real winner, cuz doesn't sake kinda taste like nail polish remover?

Kadoya was busy, but never to the point of an actual line-up, it seemed perfectly steady, to the point where someone would leave and then new customers would arrive. I like that, because I have been known to be a bit of a diva when waiting for a table, so I know I will be able to come back and not have to worry about standing in the cold. Win! I gave them five stars, but depending on how cramped I am next time I visit, it could get downgraded to four. If only I am so lucky to have three handsome queers clawing the air next to me... I'll be back fo' sho'!

    [ Food: 3/5 ]    [ Ambiance: 3/5 ]    [ Services: 3/5 ]
    Prices $$ (avg $15/person)

Since we are in Vancouver and close to the water, we were hoping to get some fresh and good sushi. After consulting Yelp, there were too many to narrow down and finally decided on this one since it was highly raved. We came here on a Friday night, waited for about 20mins and its a small place where you will seat close to others. We had the following:

Sushi & Sashimi Combo $19.95: 6 pieces of humongous sashimi (3 each of salmon & tuna), 6 nigiri (salmon, tuna & shrimp) and King's roll (shrimp & salmon with onion & garlic). More than enough to share and more than enough to leave them alone...

Yakitori $4.25: Soft inside & flavorfully charred outside. The only redeeming dish they did right.

Sunomono Salad w/shrimp $3.50: The girl sitting next to us (who is a regular), vouched that this is the best in town. I have never try this but was curious. Its clear noodle in cold clear sweet & sour broth (mainly vinegar), and there's nothing salad/veges about this... WTF?

Conclusion: This is your typical American-Japanese-Chinese run restaurant. Cheap and definitely a good place for sushi-fix if you dont care about the authenticity of a well-cut and prepared piece of sashimi goodness. Instead, you get hugh chunk of sashimi that has been overly fed (or hormone-injected) that was soft but not fresh and of low quality. Something for potential new client to ponder: A Japanese restaurant playing Chinese/Hong Kong musics all night long... I rest my case!

Great specialty sushi rolls with HUGE portions...  the salmon skin tempura one was not great as it felt like I was finding prawn tails inside the sushi.
The seating along the wall must be meant for small Japanese asses, I have a small ass, but I'm tall so I kept having to shift it back to keep from falling.

    My favourites:

    3. Spicy sauce
    4. Canada roll

The service is pleasant and your food appears within minutes of ordering. The price is perfect.

Probably the best sushi in town for the price.  Back when I lived in kits, I would still make the trek all the way downtown to eat here.  The sushi is very, very good.  They recently renovated, which gave the whole place a great modern look, but it changed the benches to just narrow enough that your full bum doesn't fit on them, which is kind of awkward.  Not awkward enough to keep me from going there all the time though.

I've been here many times between 2006-2009. Service is inconsistent and depends on how busy the place is. The special rolls are creative and although authentic isn't the word to describe them, I still would recommend this place to my friends. Also, their dinner for two set is huge, which means plenty of leftovers for the next day!

Sashimi was not fresh but they had interesting vegetarian rolls.  I really wanted authentic & simple sushi and sashimi.  But this place was more Canadian sushi with lots of mayo and tempura and stuff like that.  They also didn't offer brown rice for sushi.

The veggie dumplings and tofu appetizers were good.  And for me, that's where the good kinda stopped.  The electric blue lighting of the restaurant grated on my nerves, I think if I spent too much time in there I might've gone all "Here's Johnnnnnnnnnnnnnnny!!" on the other patrons.

In retrospect, I should've complained about the sashimi & nigri as it was incredibly unfresh and you basically spat it out after the first chew.  But this place seemed so popular that I highly doubt they'd care.  That's the feeling I got, that they wouldn't care if I did complain.

My lesson learned is:  Don't trust your hippie vegetarian friends to take you to an authentic sushi restaurant to get sashimi.

It just doesn't work like that.  It's like asking the blind leprechaun to show you the rainbow & pot of gold.  Ain't gonna happen.

The place was packed but we got seated very quickly. Ordered a spicy tuna roll along with a dinner box with salmon teriyaki. The value for money is outstanding. $30 for two with wine. Can't go wrong with that! And so fresh!

This place is cozy (small), but pretty great.  We ordered three rolls plus some assorted tempura.  All  the food came out within 10 minutes - well presented and when we couldn't fit all the food on our small table, they pulled up another table and set us up nicely.

The duck roll (dinosaur roll) was just not that great - however the rolls with coconut deal and the spicy scallop (different roll,  was not spicy) were  amazing.

Very reasonably priced and attentive service on top of that...don't forget the classic asian karaoke music in the background, hilarious.  Worth a trip if you love the sushi.

This became my favorite sushi spot in Vancouver, and that is saying a lot.

A friend took us here, and she treated us to a variety of their special rolls. All of them were delicious. Of particular note was the snow white roll. Very innovative and really tasty.

My favorite cheap roll was the spicy tuna. It came to 4.20 with tax, but it was hands down one of the best spicy tuna rolls i have ever had. And that is saying a lot. I love spicy tuna.

What made the spicy tuna so good. The automatically use tempura flakes with premium quality fresh tuna. Sooo good.

Guys, really?!?  Is expectations of sushi so low in Vancouver that this place gets this kind of fanfare?

Went based off the reviews.  The place looked like converted space disco bar, and not in a good way.  The staff were definitely nice, but far from professional, something I'd expect out of a local pho restaurant.

The food was priced well, I'll give it that, but was a huge disappointment.  Each roll we got was either coated in syrup, or had deep fried stuffings.  They were cut in huge chunks, and way too much rice, making them hard to eat in one bite and packed with filler.  The Sashimi was the last straw.  Each slice of sashimi was twice the size of regular cuts.  I'm all for large portions, but when feeding me raw animals, a little finesse please!  Nothing like a huge mouthful of raw fish to turn you off the experience.

Guys!  If you like truly good sushi, please don't go here.  This is just another sushi-'knockoff' joint that tries to buy you off with decent prices and huge portions of crappy, fat filled food.

    No thanks.

Impressive sushi roll list! Some really creative and tasty looking combinations are listed (including a desert roll with bananas and pop rocks). Alas I was eating solo and could only justify ordering so much! So many more I really want to try. Big huge portions, not at all stingy with the garnish (masago EVERYWHERE, yum), very very fresh. A tad on the expensive side, (for sushi) with rolls averaging between $7-9.

    Also, cheap (ish) beer! Woohoo!

Service was more 3 star, rather brusque and slow, but the food and venue more than made up for it. I love the blue lights, they make it feel much more pub-like, and bad Asian pop is always fun.

Just as an update on this spot.  I passed by the other day and noticed they are undergoing renovations.  So out of curiosity I checked the Vancouver Food Inspection web to see if anything may have triggered that.

Here is the link to their 11/12/2008 inspection report:  http://tinyurl.com/kadoya

I'll highlight some of the details here, as these things tend to disappear from the Food Inspection website over time:

    - Mouse droppings and cockroaches observed in front sushi area.

    - Difficult to assess kitchen area as premises has a large accumulation of food debris and build-up throughout the food preparation area.

I sure hope that the renovation helps them clean up their act!

After all the amazing things I have heard about this place, I had to try it. I was beyond disappointed with my experience. It started off OK, with a veggie roll (I can't eat fish) but when I ordered Yakisoba it all went bad.

I found a blond hair cooked into my food. Now, I understand that these things happen, not a huge deal (just kinda gross). When I brought it to the attention of the server she blamed it on me, saying it was my hair (I am a DARK brunette) then said they would charge me to replace the food. I opted out of this, but was still charged for my food I couldn't eat!!!

After this I will not be eating there again. Service is so much of the experience in a good restaurant... and I would rather go somewhere with the full package.

My first Vancouver sushi experience mostly lived up to the claims.  The best tuna sashimi I've ever eaten came with the sashimi lunch box.  The price was good and the rest of the food was above average.

The menu has some extravegant looking rolls if that's your thing.

I have literally driven to Canada for this sushi. I don't know how I can give a restaurant a stronger endorsement.

The spicy tuna sashimi is the most stellar item on their 100% stellar menu. The fish is fresh and delicate, served in impressively large chunks and coated (not drowned!) in a tasty spicy sauce with little crunchy tempura bits for textural impact.

I am drooling at my desk just thinking about it. Get thee to Kadoya!

Not quite sure why all the five stars for this place. Everything was fine about the place. I had the dinner combo b and my bf had the sushi and sashimi combo. The prices are def very reasonable, but there was a noticeable lack of care there. The whole setup seemed to be get customers in and have them eat and leave as quickly as possible.
The sashimi are def sliced too thickly here, so be aware of that. Oh, and walking into a sushi restaurant and finding out it's run by Chinese people was a bit of a let down. I'm a bit of a snob, so I want my sushi to be made by Japanese people!

Yum yum, when I want to take a break from the all you can eat sushi establishments in Vancouver, I come here!  Service is quick, its no so busy and the prices are reasonable.  We had miso soup, seaweed salad, salmon sashimi and sockeye salmon sashimi.  It was solid but nothing special or not the freshest I've had. (3 stars for this portion)

Last but not least, we had one of the best rolls I've tried in a long time.  It's called the Volcano roll I believe.  It was spicy salmon with scallop and sesame paste.  I couldn't imagine the sesame paste tasting good since it doesn't even look very appetizing but ORDER IT !!!!!!!!  The combo of salmon, scallops and sesame paste work sooo well together.  I'm giving the 4 stars definitely for the creativity of the roll.  I probably will try other rolls next time!
