Review from Quan H.
Second hot pot place I've tried outside of home (Posh was the first).
Went as a group of 4 during the holiday season in December 2011 (wow, so long ago). One of the friends was a regular there, so maybe that had something to do with the good service (will go back and verify).
Apparently when we went it was on 'holiday menu only' so it was $20+ per person for AYCE (usually it's ~$15?).
I don't know, I liked it. Individual mini pots so you don't have to share and, in my case, you can cook your own food (yay!). Everytime I had hot pot, I never got to cook my own food because other people do it for me, but I digress.
Even though we had separate pots so we wouldn't fight over the soup base, we all ordered satay anyways... x)
Also, there's a DIY sauce bar. I was completely clueless so I just played it safe and mixed some satay with soy sauce and chili, garlic, green onions... . Un-mixed, it looked pretty nasty, but tasted so good.
Fatty beef = good. The other beef = not so good. Shellfish (oyster & mussels) were good. I don't remember anything else, because we had a lot of beef left over cuz the guys at the table were being crazy.
random note: Wang Lee Hom was playing on TV in the background; maybe that contributed to the experience ;)
I'd come again if I'm ever in the area... and if I can find it again. -

K. K. Dollar Hot Pot Restaurant is located in Richmond on No.3 Road / Brownsgate in a little strip mall besides Aberdeen. Back in the day it used to be Monkey's (a little drinking hideaway I used to frequent on the 2nd floor). It's amazing how times has changed and how the once dirty place cleaned up so much and is now a AYCE hot pot place.
What's different about this AYCE hot pot joint is that they are served in individual sized pots. Each person can choose their own soup base and if you like to share (btw sharing is caring!). Plus you can sample more varieties! Sour cabbage and fish soup - a flavorful light soup with a punch of pickled cabbage. House spicy soup - increasingly spicy as the night progresses!
Regular menu is $23.95/pp while late night is $19.95/pp and both offers a variety of meat, seafood, veggies, and dumplings.
Once everything is set, head over to the buffet bar to mix your own dip sauce.
Minced garlic, cilantro, chives, jalapenos, chilli oil, soy sauce, sesame paste etc. are readily available! Add an egg with your sauce. Beauty of it all is that you can always come back for seconds and thirds...
When the food finally arrived, everything looked pretty fresh and clean... nothing looked below par and veggies weren't burnt. Quality for an AYCE place was definitely better than I expected. Fish slices looked and tasted pretty elastic and not mushy!
Even the typical anorexic oysters were plumped and juicy (remember to scoop out the meat and do not submerge the whole thing shell on into the soup! We saw someone do that - not cool). Hokkigai were also available. We found it slightly tough tho.
Mushrooms are multiple varieties. Minced Shrimp Paste. Minced Dace Fish Paste.
I personally love eating some veggies before my soup based gets too oily from all the meat contamination; but my friends, even Dave makes fun of me for being too "banana" ex. eating salad as an appie...
My best choice would be fish slices (absolutely adore), lots of veggies, oysters and few fatty beef slices. Bewilders me how the boys can eat beef slices like they are noodles... some natural born talent I will never acquire...
Order some chrysanthemum tea to take away the "hot air" from too much spicy food! At the end of it all, we were quite thirsty. I suspect there's MSG in the broth. -

The service wasn't very attentive, meat tasted odd and the price was a little too high. I'd rather go to Little Sheep Hot Pot instead. Each customer having their own pot was a neat idea but required getting broth refills too frequently and a cramped table.

If you've been around long enough, like me, you will remember this place as the drinking place called monkeys. Not anymore!
First time I came here, was for an end of the year get together with friends. The set up is not like your usual hot pot restaurant. I'm used to the 1 pot 4 people set up. But here, you get your own pot so it's perfect for when you can't all decide on one soup or for those with OCD and hate cross contamination. ;) Also perfect if your table mates are allergic to certain foods. No worries there! The selection of broth is quite large, so it will surely satisfy many tastes. My favourite is the mushroom broth. Perfect to sip on after your meal. The condiments bar is stocked full of sauces, pastes, chilis and greens. And the great thing is, it's complimentary. Not the usual 50cents for ginger and garlic deal. The huge oysters were fresh, and my odd favourite was the quail eggs. Be careful not to burn your mouth because they are hot inside! Out of the many hot pot places I've been to, I think this is at the top of the list. -

Wide selection, decent pricing and close to Richmond.
On both occasions I had stopped in at night after 9 PM. The price reduction was particular attractive.
The place is generally well-kept and service prompt. The sauce station kept things interesting. The ingredients were all fresh and did not appear to have been frozen, and the pork and fish balls prepared to order.
An outside patio offers patrons a place to cool off or to have a smoke. -

You'll never find it. It's probably one of those places that you would just drive by and not notice. Certainly, I would have been too afraid to enter this place but my friend took me here on one of our late night Hot Pot Adventures after a long day at work. You have to take an elevator up to the second floor.
The selection is pretty good if you don't order the AYCE (All you can eat) menu and go with the regular menu. We ordered lamb, beef, oysters (big ones), veggies, dark woods ears fungus, sprouts and other good stuff. What set this place apart was the soups. The spicey one had alot of flavour. We also ordered the veggie mushroom broth which was pretty good too.
Cook all the meats in the spicy broth and the veggies in the regualr broth. If you cook the veggies in the hot spicy broth, it is too hot and spicy to eat and can be hard on your stomach afterwards.
We also have plum juice (the usual for our hot pot meals).
What I really liked about this place was the condiments bar. You could take your little dish and put whatever condiments you liked. Sesame, peanut butter, beef stock, spicy sauces that you can mix with soya, sesame oil, fish sauce, fresh garlic, onions, cilantro, Jalepeno peppers, you name it.
Other places we would always forget to order and have to request for it as an afterthought. Here, at the condiment bar you can customize it to your liking.
Right now, this place is near the tops in my Chinese Hot Pot list in the lower mainland. I think it's alot better than the HKYE hot pot that is accross the street.Listed in: HOT POTS!!!
