JYSK has basically provided the furniture for my entire apartment. Well, okay, not all of it. But some major pieces (such as the bed and davenport couch) and minor pieces as well (a few knick knacks here and there).

I know, I know, it's "not IKEA." Which, Hello!, is fine. How do you think they feel living in the shadow of IKEA?

But I've shopped at IKEA plenty and while I enjoy the large selection, it can be a bit overwhelming at times. JYSK has a small but varied collection of product in an open and accessible showroom (as opposed to the maze that is IKEA).

I've managed to convert my own mother into being a fan of this store. Whenever she has to get a few small gift items for people, this is on her stop. Because, it's not just furniture, no! It's primarily home decor. Loads and loads of home decor. And the occasional odd selection of books thrown in for good measure.

Staff are helpful but not always on the floor. Don't wait, just march right over to the checkout and they will get someone to help you with whatever you need.

And if you're still jonesing for that IKEA fix, take heart in knowing that the instructions for assembling JYSK furniture are just as confusing as anything from IKEA.

Since 2001, JYSK is the official company name of what in Denmark used to be called Jysk Sengetøjslager (which in Danish literally means "Jutlandic Bed Depot"). It is a furniture store that can best be described as a smaller IKEA competitor.

I find JYSK useful because most Canadian furniture stores focus on dark colours, excessive use of leather (which is expensive yet not really comfortable), and so on. JYSK furniture, on the other hand, looks typically Northern European: clear, simple shapes, bright and colourful.

The JYSK website is very good but, unfortunately, does not include information on store availability.

The biggest disadvantage of this store is that it is relatively small. It is much smaller than a typical IKEA store, implying that they don't carry that many different products in each category. I would come here a lot more often if they had a larger variety of products in each category.

The best things about this store are it's prices and cleanliness. the store is very well-lit and clean but there's not a large selection of items to choose from. The staff are usually friendly though

I don't really have a lot to say about this store as I only had an "okay" experience.

I was referred to Jysk by a co-worker when I was looking for an oversized teddy bear for the bf's kid sister. Well, we didn't find the bear but we found that we enjoyed the store and the prices.
We just moved into a new apartment, upon moving and unpacking we came to realize that we needed a few new items like new curtains and rods; as our new windows are much BIGGER than our previous ones. We also picked up some mats, a plunger, and some placemats. Our total bill came to $66.60 (yeah I know, unlucky numbers?) which is pretty decent since curtains and rods anywhere else would probably cost double that, especially at that size. So yeah, I am impressed with Jysk.

Interaction with service staff was limited, there were not really any floor walkers, but the lady at the cash was ok!

If I had a pickup truck I would have everything in the store, ok ok I may not love everything in the store but it is a great place to find reasonably priced household items and furnature that can help complete living spaces.

Great for students and starter homes. Over the few years I have been buying things from JYSK I assumed quite a few items would have been replaced by now but that is simply not the case.

Go have a look and if you're feeling up to it buy me something nice.

Oh Jysk how IKEA you're not but then again who is?

I've always heard rumours that IKEA would be here in NS if Sunday shopping got the green light, as it's the chain's bussiest day of the week.   So green means go and IKEA is a no show, maybe a petition is in order.

Even in their home region of Scandinavia, IKEA still remains King and Jysk will be always be the Prince third in line for the throne.

I do like the furniture with its simple design and affordability.  They have some cool kids gear which you won't see anywhere else and its decently priced.

Being a neat freak myself means I usually leave the store with some type of basket or box.  Though thier linens and towels I"ll leave behind.  A set of bed sheets from their is great if you need a full body scrub, a tad rough.  On the bright side its like getting a free Lufa brush, who doesn't like a bargain I ask?

The one thing you can count on from Jysk is a matress.  Its where they got their start way back when, manufacturing beds.  They have the "all in one" system, so no box spring required.

So I say Thanks Jysk, for the great bed with many baskets under it.

When I moved back here to the east coast, I was disappointed to learn that there was no Ikea anywhere in the province- Ikea was one of my favorite spots for furniture and décor, and a Godsend when I was trying to furnish my University dorm and my first apartment.

So when a friend of mine suggested I explore Jysk, I was optimistic that perhaps I had found my Ikea alternative. Alas, I was not blown away by what I saw.  There are a number of products that are reminiscent of my beloved Ikea, namely the smaller furniture items and novelty items such as wall decor and candle holders; but I find that these items fall short of Ikea quality.

Also, I was unimpressed with the layout of the store.  Though Jysk tries to be a Nova Scotian's Ikea, it lacks the clever design scheme that is so iconic with Ikea.  I miss walking around an Ikea store, browsing the carefully staged  showrooms for unique products and decor inspiration.  With Jysk, their inventory is essentially organized chaos; the furniture is scattered throughout the store, and it's difficult to navigate through the products to find just what you're seeking (At times I have asked for assistance from employees, and even they have difficulty finding items at times...).  There's nothing that piques my creative interest.

All this being said, Jysk isn't a terrible place- you can still find some unique items with that Ikea-esque Scandinavian flair, and the price is certainly welcomed.  But at the end of the day I'm left crossing my fingers for Ikea to come soon.

Always seeing the flyer's coming in the mail I decided to take a peek in as I was in the park anyway. This store reminded me of almost like a bargain shop. A large abundance of product in one location.

Walking through the isles it is a mix match of a wide range of items. Gardening from pots to silk plants then to sleeping bags and accessories.

Further on there came a point where I was at the bedroom furniture which was not that bad. But I could not find what I was looking for and that was a mat for the outside door, something nice. As well I could not find anyone to assist me with looking. So I walked back out.

I like to think of Jysk as "Ikea meets the Dollar Store." Everything in the store has a certain Norwegian quality about it (the furniture, in particular) but it's all much cheaper - in price and in quality - than what you might find in an actual Ikea store. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if that's what you're looking for.

There's always something quirky here that I want to buy - from a crinkly kitty toy that looks like a pair of trousers, to a nubbly throw-pillow, to a foldy beach chair that actually rocks. So lots of good fun to be had in the store - just don't expect anything you buy here to last a lifetime.

Think of Jysk as a lower grade Ikea. Its a huge store of furnishings, home decor, gadgets and more, with an affordable price-point and modern esthetic.

The store itself is not, by any means, magnificent. I've found the layout to be a bit scattered, uninspired and messy. Although they do have some great finds, it would show nicer if a little more effort went into the displays and product placement.

I tagged along with a friend sometime after Christmas, and browsed the store with optimism. There were lots of affordable things to spruce up the old homestead. Bed, bath and beyond... its certainly a good spot to check out if you're looking to do a revamp.

They have a large selection of movies and DVDs, which is where I spent a lot of my time. My friend was looking to invest in a new digital camera, and found a great one at a steal of a price.

Overall Jynx seems to deliver. A fresh, modern take on all the home related, and prices to seal the deal.

Jysk is one of those stores I keep forgetting that exist. Perhaps I just need some more Omega 3 but I think the truth is they haven't made that big of an impression on me yet. Although they have gotten me out of some tight situations.

The last time I went there was when I moved into my new apartment. The apartment is beautiful but the problem is that the windows are so tall. And there weren't curtains in there in the beginning. I didn't know where to go to in order to get curtains that are twice my height! A friend suggested Jysk because they might also have curtains that are attractive at this height. Well she was right. I found great, red curtains and tension rods for approximately forty dollars or so. Could have been more but I don't remember breaking the bank.

So I do forget to go to this store but I should begin remembering because they do have good deals and I have found a lot of their products to be well made. They definitely aren't Ikea but that can also be a good thing. Some of their prices are sweet deals and others are what you would expect to pay.

The staff are generally quite friendly but sometimes hard to find. I don't know why it is, but stores that have high ceilings tend to have sparse staff or staff who are hard to find. I've just noticed that before. It doesn't really have anything to do with the review. Just wanted to note that.

Jysk saved my butt and stopped me from being an exhibitionist which in turn saved other people from seeing my exhibitionism. So they get their own star for that and three other for pretty good staff, good products and not so bad pricing.

Due to IKEA's roll out policies, JYSK is the closest thing we'll see to the Swedish retail giant again in Halifax for a few years. While JYSK does a nice job, it's kind of the equivalent of running into a side ally and buying a Gucci watch from the inside of some guy's trench coat - It might look the same, but it's not.

That's not to say it's not a good store, it's just that you know what they're trying to achieve, but it's not in the same league. The furniture is functional and realatively inexpensive. Beyond the furniture the store is filled with a lot of cute home knickknacks that no trendy urbanite (who doesn't own an IKEA catalogue) should be without.

Definitely a good place to check out, but don't expect the best!

Coming from out west I was certainly surprised to see that there wasn't an Ikea here.  At least there is JYSK, which almost matches up.  The quality and price of the products pretty much match that of Ikea and the design is very similar as well.

I don't go here to buy any big items like beds or couches, but I love it for the little household things you might not think of.  They've got some really cute kitchen items that are pretty cheap and some even nicer bathroom stuff.

I don't find the employees here to be all that helpful, though.  When asked to be pointed in the direction of the bathroom, that's literally what I got... a point.  It still took me a few minutes to get to the bathrooms, but at least I was walking in the right direction.

I guess I'll have to get used to no Ikea over here, but at least it's cousin is around.  JYSK is pretty good for household items and bedroom designs.

Admittedly it's not IKEA.  Admittedly it's not the hugest store in town.  Admittedly the furniture will not live long enough to be handed down to your children.   But...and really it is a big BUT ...you will definitely find inexpensive things to spruce up your place.   And that includes furniture as well as the sheet sets, draperies and niknaks.

We bought two great leather chairs with wood frames that might not last forever but are very cool and one year later are still going strong.  Not bad for less than $100 each.

I went into JYSK the other day for the first time. I heard a lot about it, so I thought why not. I could tell the quality of the furniture was not as good as IKEA, BUT , you can probably get more here for the price.

I would not say it was dirt cheap. I did check out other areas in the store. I do think I can get better price and quality at Winners. I got what I went for which were some boxes for storage.

I would not drive out of my way to go there again though.

Jysk only opened in Halifax a few years ago. In case you're not familiar with Jysk, it's a Danish company specializing in furniture and household goods. It offers an incredible assortment and selection at excellent prices. It carries products like drapes, cushions, desks, shelves, bedding and much, much more.  It is also a great place to shop at Christmas time , as the store offers a large assortment of Christmas decor and gift-giving ideas.
