I've been going to JV's for years (back when it was called Hoffa's even) and I love it.  I could literally eat here every day for every meal.  Although I am currently hooked on the potato tacos, everything on the menu is fantastic.  The salsa bar is delicious too.  I love the spicy carrots and the tomatillo salsa, but the greatest hidden little gem is the spicy hot sauce in the bottles on the table, YUM!

Do yourself a favor and eat here, you will not be disappointed.

I went to JV's on the recommendation of my good buddy Ferdi and was I happy I did. This place is a hidden gem! It seems like forever since I had a meal at a taco shop where I didn't leave disappointed. I was not disappointed with JV's. Quite the opposite. Great flavors, big portions, salsa cups that are bigger than a thimble, TENDER PORK AND CARNE ASADA, hand made rolled tacos (not the costco crap that 99% of taco shops serve), and UNSWEETENED iced tea. When was last time you found unsweetened iced tea in a taco shop? Yeah, that's what I thought...

Big screen TV's in every corner with NBA playoffs on every one. Cozy, and well done decor. The place was busy too (fresh food ;-) ), and all the customers looked to be enjoying their meals. the guy behind the counter was wearing a Chargers shirt, and was really nice.

Only down side, parking lot shared by the rest of the strip mall is too small. No biggie though, well worth walking half a block.

JV's is hands down my new favorite taco joint, and will hit it again and again and again! You can balee dat!!!

I was introduced to JV's several years ago as this joint was a staple for USD students.

Most recently I visited for a quick post race breakfast. I needed food and opted for the breakfast burrito. I substituted the ham for carne asada (extra charge).

I didn't eat my burrito immediately, so that could have been why I downgraded. The portion was very generous as I ate the burrito in 3 sittings. Overall, solid place to pick up a quick bite if you're craving Mexican food.

I read one review of JV's which compared the enormous burritos here to Rosie O'Donnell's thigh.

How insulting. How rude.  And how untrue.

There is nothing quite as large as Rosie O'Donnell's thigh.

My carne asada burrito was, indeed, insanely long--we are talking about a baby's arm here, folks, or something akin to it, ahem--and they didn't skimp on the meat.

Honestly, the flavor was good but not spectacular. I think there must be a carne asada truck that delivers the same meat to 80% of the taco joints around town.  However, I am still giving them 4 stars for a truly interesting and exotic menu, solid prices, clean interior, excellent salsa and salsa bar, and friendly service.

Let's face it: the surrounding neighborhood is a dump and this place, because of its location alone, would probably still do well with dirty floors, boring rolled tacos and a "B" health rating.  So, good for them: JV's is a little Mexican oasis in this pit of a neighborhood (Bay Park, my ass) and I will return to step outside of the carne asada box.

Tried this place for the first time and had the surf & turf burrito.  All I could say is that I had better.  The burrito was huge, but disappointing.  The shrimp was alright, the meat was not that good; it tasted like they mixed some shredded beef in there, which I am not a fan of it.  The fish tacos that my wife had (which she liked) and their salsa bar, saved this from a worse rating.

THANK YOU YELPERS! for helping me discover this amazing little gem.

The exterior gives off a typical little hole-in-the-wall vibe- that you'd think is 'meh'- and probably overlook... DON'T!

The food is delicious! and inexpensive. I had the carne asada tacos- and I love to eat but just one taco is huge and will more than satisfy you. Delicious flavor and cooked very well. The chips go great with the huge variety of salsas- which are all so good- one of my favorites I've never seen anywhere else was the salsa mix that had carrots and some sort of peppers?- bomb! whatever it was.

The place was packed and I thought it would be ghetto but it's all white people inside- flocking here to enjoy bomb authentic Mexican food- which they probably also heard of by word of mouth. The workers are all so nice and well, I'm from the San Fernando Valley where most Mexican Americans- especially the ones serving me, are either very rude and irritated I'm even there, OR they hit on me like it's not a job they are about to lose that they care about. These ones were very friendly and knew English pretty damn well.

Great experience, excellent and profession service, AMAZING food!  -coming from someone who isn't a huge fan of Mexican food unless it's truly authentic.

This place is where it's at. I can't wait to travel down and stop here again !

P.s- horchata is bomb too- have some!

JV's is legit--my girlfriend and I decided to try out JVs after a friend recommended it over El Indio in Mission Hills, which we tried last weekend.  JV"s surpassed El Indio and most other places I've been to in terms of value.  We got chicken and beef rolled tacos, which were excellent, and we actually went back the next night to get them again because they were so tasty and well-priced.

The best part about JV's IMO is the little things they do---the sweet Bunuelo (cinnamon sugar) chips for $1.25, and their regular tortilla chips for $1.25 as well...their authentic Mexican drinks are bomb as well, their salsas and hot sauce and condiments are plentiful and delicious.  I can't wait to try the surf and turf burrito here.  All in all a great place, cozy inside with friendly service and some of the most low-key but BOMB Mexican food in town.

This was our first adventure in San Diego as new residents to the area and it was AWESOME!! The hardest part is trying to pick one item from their menu. It was very affordable. It isn't the best place for a large group but I saw many people do take-out. I hope this is an indication of the gastronomic glory during our time in San Diego.

This is my local. When I need some quick eats I head here.very large portions at great prices. I usually get mortaditas. Carne asada nachoes do the job.  Huge menu to choose from - with selections randomly scattered all about the restaurant on fluorescent oak tag which is kinda trippy.  Wifey gets the gargantuan shrimp taco (oxymoron not lost on me).

Nothing super special IMO and not a top place in San diego for mexi grub but definitely best on morena/bay park and worth a stop if you're hungry nearby.

Parking lot blows chunks though so be ready to get door dings and wait for the privilege.

This place is legit taco shop. My dad would say he would go her back in the early 90's. Not sure if it was called JV's back then.

I almost always order the Carne Asada Burrito. Then I pick up some more pico de gallo, salsa verde, and carrots. The burrito is a pretty good size. Meat is tender, not too chewy, guacamole is pretty tasty. Some of the meat spills out onto the paper but that's all good, nothing wrong with a lil' beef paper. I just add some of the pico de gallo, grab a fork, and go to town! Then ya gotta wash it down with some tamarindo, then some horchata to go for dessert!

The owners are pretty cool. Got some Chargers, Padres, and soccer games on the flat screen. Definitely true San Diego fans!

A burrito big enough to use as a pillow.  Even after you have eaten half of it.  Size DOES matter... especially when it comes to surf and turf burritos.  This has become my number one burrito stop in SD and it's becoming hard to imagine going anywhere else to get my burrito fix.  It literally takes 2 tortillas to hold in the shrimpy, meaty goodness that JV's delivers.  Thanks, JV, for my dinner and next-day lunch!

Solid solid solid. If you read any review here you'll clearly see that JV's serves huge portions. The problem is it's kind of hard to find and if you're not a USD student or friends with a local you've probably never heard of it. I couldn't stomach the idea of a surf and turf burrito the size of my head so I simply ordered a carnitas burrito. It was delicioso and muy gigante. I was able to save half of it for later, only to forget it in my friends fridge. Fail.

Overall, I liked what they were doing there. They had creative burrito and plate ideas written on paper posted up everywhere (interesting signage), and seemed to be a friendly, local, mexican establishment. Which, unfortunately, there are many of them around SD. The food was good and i enjoyed the ambiance and the hidden, local nature of the spot. I have a few friends who swear by JVs but I'd need to have a few more experiences before turning my allegiance over to JVs.

You can't go wrong with JVs. They've been around forever and they pay special homage to the Unknown Eater (aka my father in law).  They always make us feel welcome and make the plate how we want it. Extra tomatoes...no problemo! More guac...you bet!

Their surf and turf burrito is a size of a newborn baby...sharing is caring and eating a whole baby takes a lot of skills.

Their home made soup is delicious and satisfying especially when you're sick or hungover.    I especially love their posoles.

A huge plus - all you can drink Horchata!

The crunchy carne asada tacos are fab! The meat is tender and delish! I've never had such great carne asada in a taco! It comes with guac but no cheese. You can get a side of cheddar cheese for 65 cents. No queso fresco :(

The salad bar is great! Take only what you need to keep prices cheap! The green salsa, red salsa, pickled onions & carrots are great! The red salsa doesn't taste like enchilada  sauce or burn your mouth too crazy like some places. Its flavorful but still has a good kick!

Finally used my Google deal - $5 for $10 worth of food...so glad I did! They have a good sized menu and all kind of specials and additions papering the counter area but my daughter is pretty simple - pollo asada fries - always. It's hard to get her to try something else, but when she does, she's usually glad she did. That didn't happen today so back to the food...

The register guy was very friendly and accommodating. I asked what was on their pollo fries and he mentioned nacho cheese which is not what we're used to so I asked for regular(cheddar) and he obliged. I was so shocked that 6 rolled tacos with cheese, lettuce and guac was only $3.90 I had to have them! Our total was like a buck over $10.

We scooped up some hot sauce which is very tasty and admired the artwork on the wall( my kid was mesmerized by an authentic weaving-I forget what it was).

Anyway, once we dug into the food, we were happy campers! Rolled tacos were tasty and the  pollo asada fries were pretty good. Definitely not the best in SD but I will go back to try their surf and turf burrito and other items that sounded promising.

had al pastor, carne asada, polls asada.  the taste is not suburb, kinda middle of the road in between tons of taco places in SD.  The plus side is the salsa bar is awesome.  the pico de gallo is very coarsely chopped which i like.  no free chips though.

Ok so you've been warned, HUGE portions. I had the grande burrito the other day and I was very very pleased. It was ordered extra crispy on the meat and boy did they come though! My buds ordered the Surf and Turf...I don't think you can understand the size until you see it yourself! Anyway the prices are pretty darn good for how much stuff they pack on. So why do they only get a 3 star? Well I ordered the carne asada fries once, which I consider myself a connoisseur of, and well they sucked. They were made with nacho cheese...what is that about! And the portion on that was not impressive, not that I wanted more anyway. The flavor although good is nothing out of this world.
So to wrap up: Decent tasting, well priced, huge portion food and don't order the carne asada fries.
I've never been inside the taco shop but our food getter always hooks it up with a cup of salsa so they seem to be easy going with their condiments :)

Aw, man. Memories of chomping away at huge huge burritos. I miss San Diego so bad now.

    The ambiance:
It's really tucked away off in the corner of a small shopping center. You walk in expecting seating for maybe a couple parties, but then notice how expansive the place is once you step inside. It's fairly bright and most definitely cleaner compared to a lot of other Mexican food joints in San Diego.

    The food:
I've had plenty of different burritos here, but I usually stick to my guns with the huge Surf and Turf burrito they have here. It's about twice the size of a normal burrito, it's cheap, and it's pretty darn good, too. Would I say it's the best? I think Lucha Libre for their Surf and Turf edges this one out, but the price here is a lot more welcoming.

    The service:
    No complaints here!

Definitely come here. Order the giant Surf & Turf burrito. Maybe order some rolled taquitos. Most definitely order an horchata. Enjoy. Repeat.

The burrito is really a meaty, beany, ricey baby. Those suckers are HUGE.

I like JV's but the flavors are a little "mild" for me. I'm used to the meat being super marinated and I like my beans and rice on the side..not so much on the inside. You're taking away room in the tortilla for more meat!

I like Vallarta's on Gennesee/Balboa better, but if I'm in the area, I wouldn't mind stopping by JV's and adopting a infant sized burrito. Those things can feed a small village.

Figured I might as well update this review again.  I remember back in the wee days that this place was a 3 star place and how I thought it was so massively underrated.  Now it's 4.5 stars on Yelp and I STILL think it's underrated, but it's much closer to what it should be rated at.

Seriously some of the friendliest guys here.  What is so great about here is that they'll literally make ANYTHING my mind wants to concoct.  They had to raise prices just a little earlier this year, but let's get real...this is still cheap as hell and the food they give is still ridiculously huge.

Only shame is that I'm moving away from here soon, so PLEASE OPEN A NEW STORE UP NORTH!  If not for me, then do it for Chicharito!

After reading mostly good reviews on Yelp, we decided to try this place for dinner.  It was very clean and the prices were pretty good, but the food was just average.  As another review said, the carne asada tastes like it was delivered from a company that  delivers to a lot of other restaurants.  It was bland and didn't have any spice.  My husband, who is hispanic, had a carne asada burrito.  He said it was "ok".  Not worth his going back again.  I had a California burrito.  Again, the carne asada was bland and kind of dry.  The french fries were slightly undercooked.  The sour cream was just a small blob at one end.  The worst part for me was the guacamole.  I am not a fan of tomatoes, and there were actually more tomatoes in it than avacado.  I ended up opening the burrito and eating it with a fork.  The pile of tomatoes was the same size a the amount of meat.  I only ended up eating about a third of the burrito because the meat was so dry.

If you like bland taste (not spicey), lots of tomatoes, and a big burrito for the money, this might be the place for you.  We will not be going back there again.

Holy smokes!  The portions here are massive!  And the food tastes great too.  I had a Carnitas plate with rice and beans, and it was awesome!  The pork was fried crispy and was decadent.  My plate came with something like a pound of tortillas.  Crazy!  My wife had a surf and turf burrito and she loved it, but couldn't pick it up off the table to eat it because it was so heavy!!

The salsa bar was awesome.  We also decided to be pigs and got a carne asada fries to pick off of, and it was so good.  We also got some fried cinnamon twists to cap off our fried Mexican meal.

Dude at the front counter was really friendly.  Prices were good, service was fast, food was awesome and plentiful.  What more could you want?

My favorite burrito spot in SD to date. And there's quite a few to compare.

You won't be hungry after a meal here. Portions are large, prices are down. Perfect match. Everything tastes fresh, big fresh diced tomatos make up the salsa on the burritos and other items...it's amazing.

The employee's are friendly and engaging. They remember regulars!

Place is kept clean and plenty of seating if you're choosing to dine in.

    IT"S  HUMONGOUS!

That's what she said.(sorry couldn't stop myself) Well that is what first popped into my head when I saw my Cali burrito(carne, fries, guac , sour cream). I'm not sure what I was thinking but I also ordered  3 rolled tacos w/gauc(topped with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes) way to much food!

The burrito was a meal in itself($ 5 45. )good tasty carne and having gauc in it was a plus, the fries could have been crisper for my taste. The rolled tacos were also very tasty ($2.50) and cheap.

When you enter, there is two large menus. One to your left and one above the register. They have a large menu with tradition items and there own twist on the taco shop normal fair. Once your inside , there is  a large dining area  and plenty of room to move around.

You order at there counter then take a seat and they bring the food to your table, nice touch for a taco shop. There is a salsa bar it has 2 types of salsa , hot carrots, and some picked things I believe . There is also salsa at the table which I believe is store bought tasted to me like it was tampatio .The salsa at the salsa bar are good a red and a green .

This place is  what all other taco shop should strive to be ,good quality food, good sized portions, good service, have a salsa bar and good prices.

Only bad thing about this place is the parking. The lot is small and even for a small car its pretty tight, but I can deal with that for a good burrito!

My friends didn't believe me when I told them how giant the surf and turf burritos were here.  I told them a JV's burrito can last you 3 meals if you want.  They told me nobody in San Diego could make a burrito that big.  Boy, were they wrong.

When I finally brought them to JV's, their jaws dropped.  Well, really, if you're going to eat here your jaw HAS to drop or you won't be able to get your mouth around this monster of a burrito anyways.  Armed with a knife, I carved 3 equal sections of my surf and turf, each plenty big enough to fill me up for a meal.

"Okay, Garrett - so what?  A lot of places can make big stuff, but that's not all that's important."  So true, my Internet friend.

The taste?  Delicious.  Shrimp found in a burrito is rarely so sweet.  The guacamole, the mix of flavors - it's all so delicious.  Even the type of tortilla they use is a major plus when you compare it to other burrito joints.  The price is pretty good for the amount of food you get, too, so it's an overall winning combination here.

My only regret was not being able to try everything on the menu.  I've been a handful of times, and 3 of those ended with me getting the surf and turf burrito because, frankly, it's too hard to pass up.

Absolutely the best taco shop in town.  Great friendly service and they really crank when it starts to crowd up.  A nice imaginative menu with a  lot of specials.

The only down side it the parking is practically nonexistent, sharing the small lot with 4 other businesses.

LOved it and I have not tried the Surf 'n Turf burrito yet.

    So far:
Carne Asada Burrito: Weighing in at a pound and a half with great marinade for the carne asada. Fantastic

Tacos Adobada: Awesome. I'm not the biggest pork fan so I skip the carnitas and go straight for the adobada. Three tacos with plenty of meat, guacamole, cilantro, onions with a half lime sufficient for all three tacos.

Enchiladas Mole: (special item on a sign/non-menu item) Tried it with chicken enchilada and cheese enchilada. The mole is very sweet. Alone it's almost a dessert. Add a bit of the red salsa and you get a nice combination of sweet and spicy. Very nice.

California quesadilla: I'm a meat-a-tarian so this was not one of my favorites. Since my wife ordered it I tried it and it had plenty of flavor. Just doesn't fall into my wheelhouse of normal choices.

Those were my selections to date. I've had equivalently good carne asada in a very few other places. However, the variety and consistent quality of the other items offered on the menu seem to be consistently great. I will be trying other items soon.

5 stars alone for the legendary Surf and Turf Burrito. It costs $8.59 and wont fit on an ordinary dinner plate.
I used to live close by to this culinary gem of a taco shop and hit them up regularly for the S&T burrito. I now live in Murrieta but still make the trek over to JV's if I am anywhere in the vicinity. That should tell you something...this burrito is so good that I go to get it and ride all the way home with it. The first bite will tell you it is something special.
Be prepared for the food coma if you try to take this whole bad boy to the head in one sitting. Yes it can be done...but oh the punishment.
As far as anything else they serve...I couldn't even tell you.

seriously?  This burrito weighs more than most babies...it tastes WAY better though.

I got the Almuerza with Chorizo instead of sausage...

We came here for our post-race meal. My sis was craving carne asada fries and I found this on Yelp and it as very close to where we were staying.

For three petite females we ordered a ton of food (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): carne asada fries, pozole, shrimp ceviche, surf & turf burrito, and a carne asada plate with rice and beans. Lots of repetitiveness with carne asada but we didn't really plan ahead of time and just ordered separately.

I should have read more carefully about their burritos because they are massive! It was the length of my forearm! I only ate a third of it. The ratio was a little uneven. I got more carne asada than shrimp. The shrimp was very plump and succulent but I wish then chopped them so it would have been easier to eat. The carne asada was just ok to me. The shrimp ceviche wasn't that great. They used a different kind of shrimp than what was in my burrito. It because unappealing when the shrimp wasn't cleaned properly. The carne asada fries were ok too since the meat was the same as my burrito. The pozole was a little bland but the chunks of pork were tender and juicy.

The value and amount was pretty good. If I didn't have that shrimp ceviche I could have bumped it a half star.
