My philosophy with sushi is "bang for your buck". I am not talking diner sushi (ie Robson Sushi) I need quality. AND I still want to see emphasis on creativity and freshness.

Juno is interesting in that regard because they offer a different perspective on sushi than what I usually appreciate. The attention to detail is amazing and no expense is spared even on a simple California roll. The rice has the perfect velvety texture and I can really appreciate the taste of real crab meat. The presentation is simple, petite and elegant. And little things like lightly sprinkling roasted AND unroasted sesame seeds on rolls sets this place at different level for me where I cant judge it like I do most places.

The simplicity of the presentation allows the ingredients to speak for themselves. And the appetizer options are great! Worth a trip to Yaletown

I'm not sure what happened here recently, but either the items have become smaller, or the quality has faded on my recent visits. I used to love the Thursday sushi combo and beer, however the rest of the menu shined as well. Recently, I had that usual combo and also several other items to share with friends.
The Goma-ae was so small, I had to inquire where it was actually the menu item or an accompaniment to something else. It was about tablespoon sized, for $5. I'll add a picture of it. The sashimi plate seemed a bit small for the price and the beef tataki was so-so. I had to discard some of mine. I'm not sure if this is the norm, but there are better deals in the area.
One thing that I do like is that they have umeshiso rolls on the menu.

Juno Vancouver Sushi Bistro is a little Japanese restaurant located on Davie street on the border of Yaletown. It is quite small inside but it's decorated nicely and looks a lot more upscale than your typical little sushi place. I came here for lunch but I wasn't really in the mood for sushi so I decided to order the pork katsu-don ($9). The pork katsu-don is made with deep-fried pieces of kurobuta pork with eggs, green onion, and sautéed onions on top of a bed of brown rice. The meal also came with a miso soup. The miso soup was served hot and it was satisfying but nothing out of the ordinary.

When I got my big bowl of katsu-don the first thing I noticed was how great it smelled. When I took my first bite it tasted as delicious as it smelled. The pork was really soft and there were tons of big pieces on top. I love onions and I liked how it had sautéed onions and some green onions sprinkled on top. Both of them added really nice but different flavors. The portion of rice was generous and it soaked up all of the juices from the toppings so it was full of flavor. In every couple bites you would get a nice little piece of egg.

I'm shocked that this place wasn't busier, the food is great! This dish was truly amazing, it was the best Japanese pork dish I've ever had. It had so much flavor and the quality and portion were good for the price. I would love to come back here and try more things on the menu.

Ummm.. total rip off!! Especially if you go for the sushi. Quality is not spectac. You can get better quality and larger volume of sashimi/sushi elsewhere in the city.
The atmosphere was not even that cozy... I could see the brooms & kitchen area from where I was sitting. For prices like that, you don't really want it to look like you're sitting in the kitchen.

The few dishes that looked interesting but that I did not try (not because we were NOT hungry.. cos we were! but because we didn't want to risk getting ripped off even more)... were the yakiudon kitchen specials.

If I do ever go back, I'll stick to the unique items...

OH and don't go by the yellow call outs on the menu. I should have known that "BEST IN TOWN" doesn't qualify unless you've checked out yelp first...

Really really good sashimi, extremely fresh.

We got the $20 sashimi, the special sashimi tasting menu of the day, their braised pork belly (2 orders!), unagi and ika sashimi, edamame and beef tataki.

-1 star for a couple of things...

    1) The menu for the sashimi stated we would be getting 2 pieces of surf clams, but we were given tako instead. It would have been nice to have been notified in advance, that way I would have canceled the ika.
    2) While the ama ebi presentation is beautiful, it is really hard to eat. I had to pick up the shrimp and separate the head from the body myself. Not an easy feat. Wish they had thought this one through.

Overally a great, great Japanese restaurant. Definitely recommended!

Overall I thought the Sushi was good here.  I ordered a variety of inside out rolls (Spicy Tuna, Shrimp Tempura, and California) and also a side salad.  The rolls were very tasty and the salad was incredibly fresh and flavorful with their miso vinaigrette.  Speaking of miso, they were out of soup :(

We went there rather late, about 8pm and there were actually no seats, but then again, it only sits about 20 people total, including the bar.  There was one waitress and two sushi chefs.  That waitress was running around like crazy, and I felt we got great service.

It was a cozy place, with great service and good sushi.  I would definitely go again.

Eating here is like being back in Japan again. Juno Sushi served me some of the best sashimi I've had outside of Japan. It was so good, I went back for a second time in my three day visit to Vancouver. When I returned again four months later, the waitress remembered me which was very touching. She not only remembered my love for uni, but also asked for updates on my job search and pending move, and was happy to hear that I'm moving here in a few weeks. I'm looking forward to becoming a regular when I finally make Vancouver my home.

The waitress and the sushi chefs are sweet and friendly. Each visit, I have dined alone, and they were friendly and easy to make conversation with. This tiny establishment has several tables and a handful of spots at the bar. Juno should have a line out the door, it's that good. The prices are excellent and the menu options are fantastic.

Go here. Eat. Enjoy. Support this business so it survives and I can continue to get tasty, delicious, and cheap sashimi!

I'm a huge fan of this place. I was so shocked to find this little gem on Davie Street. I've been so discouraged by Vancouver Japanese restaurants lately and it's complete and utter blandness. This place brought me right back to Japan. The fish is superbly fresh. The service is spot on. I couldn't say anything bad about it. The ambiance is wonderful. perfect aesthetic for the size. I secretly want it to stay a hidden spot so that I can enjoy it without a long lineup! 5 stars plus!!

If you have a problem with intimacy, this place isn't for you.  I personally have a problem with obeying acceptable personal space boundaries though, so I love the cozy space.  The fare is always solid.  Personal favourites are the beef tataki and spicy tuna roll.  Vancouver is brimming with amazing sushi, so just continuing to hit up this adorable little joint on the regular says it all.  It also doesn't hurt that it is in my hood.

My only complaint is that if you eat at odd hours, they may not be open.

    * Japanese "bistro" *

I have two confessions about Japanese food and me:

    1)   I've never been a fan of highly composed rolls with more ingredients than I can taste.
    2)   I've never been a fan of aburi sushi.

So the starter of "uni"fornia roll had a long uphill battle with my preferences.  It is basically a California roll with real crabmeat, topped with uni, tobiko, masago, and a misonnaise sauce.  Then it is charred with a butane torch in an aburi style.  Lots going on in this roll.  Unfortunately it didn't work for me.  The avocado was a bit hard and slightly mealy, which could be overlooked.  But the charring on top made the entire roll taste of butane - not a pleasant taste unfortunately.  It felt as if some nice ingredients like the crab and uni were not treated well by the preparation.  2 stars.  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The kakuni was the highlight of the meal.  The pork belly had been stewed long enough to remove the difficult texture belly sometimes has, and allowed the meat flavour to truly shine.  It was accompanied by a free range egg.  4 stars.  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The daily teishoku (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) was a deep fried chopped beef, 3 nigiri, a salad, brown rice, and miso soup.

The nigiri were the highlight of the combination - getting 4 stars.  The bincho was nice and buttery and quite fresh.  The salmon was equally fresh.  The ebi was uneventful and the right texture.  The fish was cut properly and the rice was packed correctly.  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The beef was well seasoned and fried with a gentle touch so it was not overly greasy.  The sauce was a bit sweet for my taste, and the breading was slightly thicker than I prefer.  Overall a 3 star effort.  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The salad was nicely dressed, with a nice variety.  3 stars.  Photo: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

The miso soup was a bit sparse with a few small pieces of tofu, and not as strong of a miso flavour as I normally crave.  2 stars.  Photo:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

Overall there were some highlights and some lowlights, hence the 3 stars.

I was meeting for lunch with a Penticton REALTOR who was in town the other day and she wanted sushi. So I headed over to Yelp and found a few options, but the 1st one I picked is not open for lunch. In the end I decided on Juno Bistro. I was pleased to see that they are not into bulk sushi a super cheap prices and they they care about where their fish and
    meat come from.

We arrived just after 2pm and they actually close at 2:30 for break before dinner. We were the only ones in the place, but that should not colour your feelings about the place. I orderd the lunch special which was a breaded beef cultet with side salad and three pieces of sushi (salmon, tuna and prawn), plus a bowl of miso soup.

The beef was from Pemberton and was delicious. The sushi was tasty and the soup was much better than usual.

The service was excellent they were very gracious about us being there till nearly 3pm.

This is the first sushi place I've been to that features sustainable, local seafood and meats.

Freshness wise, yes they deliver. Taste wise, nothing special.

We started with the beef tataki. Maybe I failed to read correctly but it had wasabi mayo as the sauce. Me and wasabi aren't the best companions. Beef was ok, but didnt fill me much.

Wild salmon sashimi was fresh, but $11 /7pc was a little much.

Rolls. I was excited when I saw California roll w/ REAL crab on the menu. I've always wanted to try non-imitation cali roll, but the rice was a little dry and they didn't put any mayo in the filling so lacked flavour. Dynamite roll featured the same issue.

Lastly, the salmon risotto croquettes. These were the most appealing. Big balls, crisp but not oily crust and best of all, filling.

Bill ended up a little pricey and we were still hungry.

    Cake saved the day.

After my visit to Momosushi, I was left craving a better Vancouver sushi experience. Yelpers had given Juno a pretty good rating, and it wasnt too far from my hostel so I thought I would give it a try. Walking along Davie, I came across other sushi establishments that looked warm and inviting, but I pressed on, thinking I would take a look at Juno before deciding.

Juno's menu was a little pricier than the others along the street, but something about it beckoned me in. I sat at the counter and ordered the Dynamite Roll, the Spicy Tuna Roll (which was fantastic! the best Ive had in all of my travels) with brown rice, and a pint (which turned into three) of Sapporo.

What a difference this place was! The sushi came quickly and was ridiculously fresh. Most importantly IT FIT INTO MY MOUTH. There was none of the three-bite/drop half the roll and most of the rice into the soya sauce misery that I encountered at Momo. I mentioned this to the chef, and he nodded almost sagely and told me that he strove to create a balance with his food (which makes perfect sense when you think about it).

I spent three hours at Juno, having struck up a conversation with a local who was eager to tell me of all the yummy places to go to for food in Vancouver. All in all an unexpected and lovely evening. I will definitely be back the next time Im in town.

My wife treated me to dinner here the other week. Arriving close to 10p on weeknight, the place was pretty much empty. We each grabbed an assorted sushi combo meal and proceeded to chow down.

The first thing I dove into was the salmon sashimi. It was good but it wasn't the buttery texture I've experience (and enjoy) from other salmon. However, once I moved onto the other pieces I started to notice why the sushi prices were a little higher than other places in the area. The texture of sashimi is very smooth. You can tell its fresh.

So you might be paying a little more for average size pieces, but the fish you are getting is definitely above par in taste, and texture.

Tuna, Clam, Shrimp, Squid, Unagi and that  "Egg Thing" were all great.

If I weren't such a cheap ass this would probably be my go-to sushi place around here.

Juno is a gem of a place.  It's tiny, but quaint.

For the quality and presentation of their sashimi/sushi, this place is the best money you can spend without breaking the piggy bank.  I wanted to keep this place a secret, but what foodie would deprive others of outstanding sushi/sashimi?  I would recommend their dinner service versus their lunch due to a better selection and variety.

    Not I....enjoy!

Best sushi I've had in Vancouver.  Lets start with the restaurant itself - love the decor and feel of the place!  It's really nice inside and wasn't busy upon walking in.   It seems like one of those secret gems here in Van.    The staff are awesome there - there was no Tuna Tataki on the menu - but the waitress asked the chef if he could make some - and he did, for a very reasonable price!

Presentation of the food was beautiful - sushi lying on banana leaves with the garnish arranged quite nicely.    The wasabi was more mellow than the wasabi I've had elsewhere, and they chose the more expensive white ginger over the pink ginger.

My favorite roll of the night was the Super Spicy Tuna roll - with two types of tuna.  It's a bit on the expensive side,(12.95) but very much worth it.    The fish is all very fresh and wild-caught - and due to the freshness - tastes amazing.

If you are a beer fan - they have Asahi and Sapporo on tap for $14 a pitcher regular price - when I was there - the Sapporo was on special for $12 a pitcher.

I will be making this my regular spot from now on!

*edited* added a picture of the tuna tataki we had.

Not only does this place have the best, most fresh sushi in the city; the room is cool.  That is my biggest issue with Sushi in Vancouver, as you always feel like you're in a cafeteria with bad lighting.  The staff is incredibly friendly.   The usual suspects, and they source locally.

    A must.

What a discovery!  Too bad for those people crowding the hole-in-the-wall mediocre sushi places in the next block of Davie Street- they should cross Seymour and experience some fabulous food, sophisticated decor and great service.
The sashimi was ultra-fresh, nicely presented and of high quality. The salmon in the salmon cone was buttery smooth.  I often find that cooked food at sushi places is not the focus and therefore suffers for lack of attention on the chef's part, but not in Juno's case.  I will return for the Top Sirloin Beef Steak which was another star from their menu.  The beef was from Pemberton and did not come via freezer truck from Alberta- taste the difference!

I love the fact that they use local suppliers whenever possible and had the courage and creativity to inject Italian and Middle Eastern influences, among others, into their food.  The menu includes hummus and Italian-style marinade and Shiso pesto.  The prices are very, very reasonable.    I hope this restaurant will achieve the success it deserves.

What a find in DT for sushi lovers!
The sushi chef is skilled and funny : )
Price is really good, $12 for a pitcher of Asahi beer.
Ambiance is great and service is great.
Everything is fresh and almost everything is made in front of your eyes.
The menu is not too big but offers good variety.
Both chefs are well-presented and well-mannered.
If possible, I recommend you take a sit on the sushi bar where you can see the chef with his skills.
This is just a great place to have some fabulous sushi.

    Mmm...spicy tuna roll...

This is one of the few Japanese restaurant on Davie St that is actually ran by Japanese people.  Within a 3 block radius, there might be about 4 or 5 "japanese" restaurant, but this one is the best.

Of course, having said that, the price do reflect that fact and while prices are still decent, it's definitely more expensive than the other joints.

I've tried some of their cooked food but thought the sushi is what keeps me returning ( did I mention the spicy tuna roll?) It always taste fresh as they do use quality ingredients.  Go for the Combo B if there are two of you ( california/dynamite/SPICY TUNA/tuna/salmon roll each) Good value @$18!

I've been known to have a craving of the spicy tuna roll late at night...

Great, hidden little spot:  nice ambiance, exposed brick interior, and quality sushi.  The Kabocha Croquette appie blew me away: fried mashed kabocha squash balls with avocado and mozza in the middle (delish!) served with a tomato/yogurt sauce.  Beautiful, high quality sashimi, and delicious twist on goma-ae, using crushed pistachios instead of the usual peanuts.

Hands down the best Sushi in Vancouver!!! Hip little secret tresure of a place, very friendly and nice staff. Cool decor, and the food was amazing. I love that Juno's is using local ingredients and a local wine list. Ultimately one of the best dinners I've had in Vancouver in ten years.

The food was great. Everything was well portioned, well prepared, and delicious. I had various nigiri, edamame, agadashi tofu, and a couple of the rolls.  The service was good, too. I'd certainly go back.

Stopped here with a group of 7 for sushi while vacationing in Vancouver. I can't say how it compares with other sushi in Vancouver, but it was just average compared to places I've been in the states. The sushi was pretty good, the service was not (we had our soups in front of us for 5 minutes before we got spoons). Nothing really sucked, but nothing blew my socks off either. Good prices though.
