Everything I've ever ordered here has been absolutely delicious  -- with the exception of the Chowpatty Chicken sandwiches which is hands down one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten.

I am surprised there's not a line around the block -- it's that good.

I  felt like a Top Chef judge because the food was beautifully presented with the most complex seasonings.   There were about five things on the menu along with two different drinks - and we ordered one of everything for about $40.

Holy sh*t - the somasa chaat and mumbai salad were spicy good. You could taste the freshness.  This is not your typical Indian food served with a side of naan. Sassy lassi had some curry seasoning which gave it a unique taste. I'm not sure I could have had more than one but it was good to try. Loved the cilantro lemonade. I'm gonna try to duplicate at home when I get a chance.

I'm not sure when Preeti was voted off Top Chef but those judges are idiots because her food rocks! I hope she sticks around for a while or at least opens on Saturday so my East Bay friends can give it a try. If this turns out to be a long term deal, it would be great to have a table or two outside so we could eat with our dogs. Just a suggestion : )

PS - All the take away containers are environmentally friendly . Yay!

Juhu is the Indian street food pop-up run by former Top Chef contestant Preeti Mistry. Only 2 days left to get your Juhu on because 8/26/2011 is their last day at the Garage Cafe and future plans are not finalized.

Sassy Lassi ($3, alphonso mango, lime yogurt http://www.yelp.com/bi...) Different than your average mango lassi with thinner viscosity and sweet, tart and . . . salty? I liked it, but may not be for everyone.

Holy Slow Braised Cow ($9, smokey black cardamom short rib with cucumber raita http://www.yelp.com/bi...) There's also cilantro, as you see in the picture. Still, this was a delicious sandwich on a toasted Acme roll. The beef was tender and juicy with a slowly building heat; it didn't taste very spicy on the tongue, but half-way through I started a light sweat. I would have liked more raita.

There was a small pile of house-made pickles under the sandwich (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) they were *very* lightly pickled and much milder than most achaar you get. The white thing in the picture was a garlic clove which was like eating raw garlic. Not recommended if you have afternoon meetings (or even if you don't)

Shoulda, Coulda, Vada Chaat ($5, two crispy mashed potato balls topped with spicy, sweet, tangy chutneys and summer relish http://www.yelp.com/bi...). The potato balls weren't crispy, but there was crunch from the sev (?) which reminded me of canned crispy chow mein noodles. The fresh tomato and cucmber relish on top was nice.

    Lassi - 3.5 stars
    Braised Cow - 4.5 stars
    Housemade Pickles - 3 stars
    Vada Chaat - 3 stars

Wow. The holy slow braised cow was absolutely delicious! Definitely not flavors I've tasted in any restaurant, Indian or otherwise. The lassi also had a unique flavor as well. Don't expect the super sweet taste you get in most North Indian restaurants.
As others mentioned, the price to portion ratio isn't great. I definitely could have eaten two, but I tend to avoid spending $20 for lunch. However, you don't get what you don't pay for and I am absolutely positive I will be back to try something else on the menu.

I stopped by after work to check out Preeti's new spot and it is amazing. I got the holy slow braised cow sandwhich and a sassy lassi and they were both amazing. I would definitely get the holy slow braised cow again, but since it's so close, I think I may also cycle through the whole menu.

Preeti is also really friendly and I think there is something to be said for really good customer service in addition to good food. Please check out this place and help it stay in my neighborhood!

Yeah, pretty good.  Had the beef sparerib sandwich and the cilantro lemonade.  The meat was extremely tender, tangy, on a great Acme roll - very yummy.  The cilantro lemonade was delish too.

It's a pretty weird setup - a deli counter on the left, some random tables/seats on the right.  It works, for what it is.

I have a feeling that this meal would cost $2 in India, but here - was ~$14.

I'd go back, but it's a pretty pricey sammy and drink, IMO.

Great little find, highly recommended.  I ventured out there two days in a row (thank you jury duty?) - and tried the chicken sandwich, vegetarian sloppy joe (pav bhaji) sandwich, and the samosa.

All were spectacular.  It's so refreshing to see an Indian restaurant using fresh and healthy ingredients while still tasting authentic.  Worth trying even if you have to make it out mid-week, I know I'll trek over if necessary...

Food was alright - primarily because of the Acme bread. I had the chicken sandwich which didn't have that much in it - just the chicken and a teeny weenie bit of "coleslaw". I wish there had been more flavors involved in the sandwich.

The location is weird and unpleasant. They could definitely spruce up the place a lot.

There aren't a lot of lunch spots in this area of SOMA, so if you need something quick, cheap, and decent, then go to Juhu.

so random! We cam to Garage Cafe because we were craving Mediterranean food but found out once we go there that they are only serving Juhu Beach Club for lunch.

Garage Cafe is interesting looks like a former converted Mexican restaurant and there is a random liquor store in the back.

The Indian food smelled really good so we decided to try it. I got the Nahu chicken salad which was surprisingly very good! The chicken was perfectly grilled and the spices were subtle and aromatic at the same time. I thought the salad: chicken ratio was a little off (i.e. I wanted more greens) but the flavor was really good.

    A few notes:
    $8 for the chicken salad

    Cash only

Yes please and thank you. Came here the other day for lunch and am planning on returning next week, this little gem in the SOMA is certainly not to be missed.
Slow braised shredded melt in your mouth beef sammie on Acme bread..yes please. My man and recent born again carnivore left me only two bites of the chicken sandwich but, god damn!, was it good..
OK OK OK lets really get down to brass tacks, when it comes to any kind of indian food (and really there is no place in the city like this) its all about the samosas right? Light fluffy crispy crunchy chocked full of strangely spiced savory potatoes.YES PLEASE!
Bottom line its cheap, fast, original damn good indian street eats.

I feel as a business owner it is your responsibility to let yelp know about the fact the business is closed. I used yelp to find a sandwich place and took transportation across town to come to this place and I find out its no longer there. It seemed to have been a while. Maybe yelp can temporarily deactivate the ad, but I think it should show that this listing is no longer open.

Delicious inventive food served by nice folks in an old auto shop.  Had the fish tacos which feature just the right balance of fish, breading and condiments. Highly recommend stopping by JBC for lunch. The only thing keeping me from rating it five stars is the decor, or lack thereof.

For better or worse, Indian food is probably my single favorite ethnic cuisine on the planet... so when I hear of a new Indian concept making the rounds, I get giddy with childlike excitement (you should have seen me the first time I heard of Curry Up Now!). Upon attaining recon of an Indian street food pop-up taking up residency inside a liquor store just steps from one of my regular haunts (Butter), it was only a matter of moments until I was strutting through their front door with cash in hand and an eager palate ready to dissect their savory little vittles.

It's a bit of a slapdash operation with a kitchen on the left hand side upon entry with a handful of picnic tables to the right before you enter the liquor store directly ahead of you at the front door. Like the layout of the previous Middle Eastern tenant that called this space home prior to Juhu's emergence, the prep area is completely wide open and you can see the process from start to finish once you place your order. Depending on the size of the queue, the time can vary in receiving your grub... but from the looks of things, there's really only one person doing the dirty work in the kitchen (Preeti) while another employee handles transactions and such a few feet away. In my case it was totally endurable, but if it were to get slammed, I could totally see a 1/2 hour wait easily.

I was hoping to try the vegetarian Sloppy Lil' P, but unfortunately, there were a few ingredients that prevented me from being able to indulge. I'm not quite sure what those ingredients were, exactly, but needless to say, I was a bit bummed out since that was the sole reason I bookmarked it upon catching an image of their daily offerings. I'm often curious as to why a vegetarian dish can't be made completely without animal products, because on the surface, it seems like they're already about 85% there with the dish being devoid of meat in the first place... so what's preventing the full push to make it 100% free of butter/milk/eggs/animal fat/etc...? I mean, I understand if it's something like a quesadilla (obviously impossible to make without cheese), but a vegetarian Sloppy Joe? If it were the bun, I'd have happily had the dish sans bread, if it was something else in the actual meat-like mixture, well... it just seems silly that certain ingredients can't be removed to make it completely plant based. Oh well.

I did have a chance to try one of their pea and potato samosas with a sweet chutney, however... and that was pretty darn good. I wouldn't go as far as saying it stands out as the upper echelon of samosas I've tried in the past, but it was certainly very tasty and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. It was the last samosa they had before selling out, so my best advice would be to make sure you get there good and early to ensure you don't run into a situation where your desired menu option isn't available due to others swooping up all the goods before you step inside.

I went to Juhu Beach Club on a Friday evening a couple of months ago and had an AMAZING time!  I've heard such great reviews of this place I had to check it out.  I went with a group of people and we ordered everything on the menu so we could all have a taste.  Every dish they brought to us just got better and better.  The samosas... the braised cow sandwich ... the chicken sandwich... I was full when the veggie sandwich came out- which ended up being one of my favorites (a short second behind the chicken sandwich).  We managed to top off the meal with a chai chocolate chip cookie...

I highly recommend trying this place out.  All items on the menu from that day were delicious- and if it is available you should order the cilantro lemonade.

I just heard they are moving locations- and I can't wait to check out the new venue once it is announced.

Tried out the chowpatty chicken sandwich, gazpacho & nimbu pani lemonade (cilantro lemonade).  All was quite good... the chicken was blackened with a nice spicy rub topped with a crispy, cool slaw.  Gazpacho was very spicy but bits of mint added a surprising dimension to the flavor.  Unfortunately my soup really over-powered the subtle flavors happening in the lemonade... plus I kinda sucked it down to cool off my tongue from my cold spicy soup!  Over-all all was delicous!

    Listed in: Yum!

Not the case with Juhu Beach Club.  This place is bangin!  Some of the best food I've had in a long time.  Cheap as fuck too.

    DIG IT!
I sometimes work over in that neighborhood and I totally dig getting my lunch there! Most indian food upsets my stomach, but not Preeti's! My favorite is here veggie 'sloppy joe' but I totally dig her samosa's especially since it comes with a great lil salad! Here chicken salad sandwich is great too! I don't normally eat red meat but here 'cow' sandwich was also good.
SUMMARY: I'm going back there RIGHT NOW!

This is a great place to eat - highly recommended. Preeti and her staff are very personable, friendly and always have a moment to listen and talk about the food. The food is amazingly and consistently good and, for me, unusual. There are frequent new things to try which is a further incentive for regulars like me to return. Above all, what is surprising and wionderful about the food, apart from the fresh taste - everything Preeti prepares is richly aromatic. Plan to eat in when you go - the ambience of schlock formica, continuously running Bollywood movies and Corona Lager beach posters is - so good.

CHECK THIS SPOT OUT- For Real.

This place really is as good as it gets!  There were 5 of us, we all came over from Oakland on a Friday evening and it was perfect. We ordered everything on the menu and ate until we could eat no more!

the holy slow braised cow? Amazing! Divine.
the chowpatty chicken- the tenderest and most delish ever!
the sloppy lil' p- we renamed Sloppy Joe from Jesus
and acme bread on all of them- sooooo soft and yummy!

we had the samosas, the salad, the vada chaat- or dear. it was all so good.

And the cilantro lemonade is just perfect with it all. Everything was full of spice and flavor and some with a bit of kick. yum.

funky spot inside the Garage Cafe. cafeteria like tables. really low key and easy.

This is a brave attempt at re-draping indian street food with a hipster veneer. I really want to give the place three stars for originality, but can only offer two, as the innovation is regressive.

Now, hipster versions of anything are doomed to begin with, as are hipsters (hopefully). Indian street food works because of the equal intensity of loud flavors - spicy, sweet, tangy - all working in unison to lift your palate. In re-inventing these tried and tested recipes, JBC shows up without one or more of these flavors - leaving the dishes sadly lop-sided. For instance, the gazpacho - is a pallid without a spicy kick. The cabbage leaf 'salad is exceedingly tangy - which is an unpleasant surprise. The pork vindaloo bun is the castration of a vindaloo's intensity. The sloppy Joe descendant of pav bhaji is the only one that is rendered true to its ancestor, but somehow manages to be less. The idea of using banh-mi like buns as a delivery vehicle is a great one - the delivered load itself lets down mostly.

From ratings it is evident that hipsters are reveling in taking down indian street food after ruining mission burritos for everyone. If you want authenticity with innovation, head to Dosa. Yet, a nice try.

I reallllllly wanted to like this place. I have been in search of authentic Indian chaat in the city for years. Let me start with the positive parts first: friendly service and clean place.

Negatives: NOT authentic Indian chaat. If you are open to trying a westernized interpretation of samosas, pav bhaji and other chaat dishes, go on and check Juhu Beach Club out. But if you expect authentic Indian chaat, you will find bland, dull dishes that are pretty to look at, but horribly disappointing to taste.

Great food, but pricey. Delicious Lil' P (vegetarian sloppy joe) was a basic hamburger bun with pav bhaji masala slopped up on there. Not sure I really got my $8 worth unless you add the cool factor as a +$3.

Smoky atmosphere when the grill is running-- you'll end up smelling like Indian food, which is not a bad thing in my opinion.

I had the Holy Slow Braised Cow (smoky black cardamom short rib sandwich with cucumber Raita) It was Amazing!  My friend had some chutney-topped potato-and-pea samosas also great!!!  The deli is housed in  A LIQUOR STORE -- so you can brown bag a beverage too!  Doesn't get much better than that!!  Love SOMA!

Very good concept, but must get better with timing, especially if working a lunch-crowd.  Street-food = fast, hot and tasty.  Yesterday--30 minutes to get a sandwich (AFTER placing order).  And not a word from the person at the counter that it would take that long.

Food is good, though.  Kind of wish they'd just call the Sloppy Joe what it is (Pav Bhaji) and then make a real Joe with kheema.  But they're just starting out, and so it's all good.  The chicken was very tasty, unexpectedly so.

Anyway, all things equal, I'd give them more stars if they had faster service.  Waiting for a table or standing in a long line to order is a standard delay for lunch.  But after placing an order...

My wife and I are fans of Top Chef so when my wife mentioned one of the contestants opened a place near us we had to go check it out.  When my she told me it was Indian food I was even more excited because Indian is one of my favorites and sometimes it's hard to find a good place.  Juhu did not disappoint.  We went on a Friday for lunch and besides the items on her menu there were some great sounding specials.  I got the Samosa Chaat special and  and the Mumbai Salad, both of which were wonderful.  The Mumbai Salad had a little bit of heat which added something unique to great flavor of the salad.  My wife got the Shrimp sandwich special and the Shoulda Woulda Chaat which were also great.  We also tried the Cilantro Lemonade that was delicious too.  My wife got the Sassy Lassi, which she wasn't exactly crazy about, but that's a personal taste thing and nothing against Juhu.  Both Preeti and the other woman working there were friendly, they use terrific ingredients, and make a point of using environmentally friendly packaging and utensils.  One thing I wish they had was some outdoor seating so we could have enjoyed the food there with the great weather we were having and our dog.  It's not cheap, but worth it as a treat and we'll definitely go back to try some of the other things on her menu.  Of course if she keeps offering such good specials that may take a few trips.

I was lucky enough to get invited to the pre opening to try out Preeti's food. I have worked with Preeti for years as one of her sales rep. Her food has always been just delish and Juhu is no exception.  The spices and the flavors are marvelous. Being the carnivore that I am I had to go with both meat options, though I was very intrigued by the Veggies sloppy joe. The very tasty Lil' Cow (I think thats what it is called) was tender juicy yum. The sauce makes the bread all gooey and you are quite literally liking your fingers. The other sandwich the cowpatty chicken sandwich was moist and flavorful topped with curry slaw. Both sammies came with an Indian style pickled veggies, crunchy and flavorful. Oh and how could I stop writing without mentioning the samosa's which I am an addict for. Preeti is a amazing cook and I hated how the made her look on Top Chef, screw those people. Good luck to her and her new venture especially since she is filling a need in the Indian lunch spot market. Thanks again Preeti!!!!
