    An old house
    with a lot
    of cool
    old stuff.

The Thomas Jost house is one of the oldest buildings in Sydney and was built by Captain Samuel Sparrow around 1786. Even though modified throughout the years the house is a great example of early architectural style.

Thomas Jost bought the property in 1836 and his family owned the house until 1971, when they donated the dwelling to the the town of Sydney. Various parts of the house were then restored and a large collection of artifacts was started.

It is now a museum and you can get a guided tour of the house for only four dollars. That's just four loonies or two toonies in Canadian money. Those stupid coins are so heavy you might as well use them up. At least they go to a good cause.

The guides are all dressed in appropriate period customers and the tour starts in the original basement and works throughout the house. Not only historical stuff but humorous anecdotes and cool stories of admittedly questionable authenticity makes for a very pleasant and edifying time.

The museum collects historical artifacts and the items are scattered throughout the house. Of course the guides occasionally inquires what you think a certain bizarre or arcane tool was used for and then enjoys surprising the visitor with the real purpose of the device. One room upstairs represents an early apothecary with bottles of early medicines, tools and other strange apparatus used in this business. The guides are extremely knowledgeable are can easily answer any stupid question a visitor might come up with.

Another room is used as a marine display with cool old texts and models of famous Nova Scotia vessels and this room alone is worth the price of admission.
