We had a hard time finding jewelers that sold affordable wedding rings, so our coworkers sent us over to the Boston Jewelery Exchange building and ended up in Joseph Gann Jewelers. Unlike many of the other jewelers in the building, Joseph Gann has a large selection to accommodate all budgets and tastes.

We met with Steve, who helped us pick out two simple yet affordable wedding rings in our price range, by asking us what we wanted and then showing us tray after tray that fit our description. Nowhere else had the sheer quantity of trays of wedding rings that Joseph Gann did. I had wanted a plain ring that wasn't too blingy, and had almost settled on a plain white gold band, when Steve noticed I'd been eying the more glittery ones. He magically found a version of the band I was going to buy that had small diamonds inset into the ridge. It was still simple and not at all blingy, but had a little bit of extra sparkle- exactly what I wanted.

Steve also helped my husband pick his ring. He had done research on all sorts of different materials, but Steve knew more pros and cons than my husband had found, and helped him pick one that best fit his needs. Steve also was able to properly size my ring to a 4.25, which was great because the mall jeweler where my engagement ring came from could only do a 4.5 and it just didn't fit right.

Finally, we were in the middle of shopping while we went to Joseph Gann, and Steve didn't pressure us to buy anything- he just wrote down the information we needed, and let us go continue shopping. Of course, no one could compare, and we came back the very next business day to purchase our rings. I couldn't be more pleased with what we got. The engraving and everything went well, as well.

The only minor critique I have for Joseph Gann is that they sold us the rings in a bag clearly labeled "Joseph Gann Jewelers." As much as I appreciate a business needs to advertise, I wasn't really comfortable walking through Downtown Crossing advertising that I was carrying expensive jewelery. We were able to stuff it in my husband's coat, but if that's not an option for you, I'd recommend bringing a non-descript bag to carry your purchase home. Other than that, it was amazing and I heartily recommend them.

I had always coveted a girlfriend's vintage engagement ring so when the time came to get my own, I called her to see where it came from.  She directed me to Joseph Gann and told me that she and her fiance had worked with Matt Gann.  I stopped in and Matt produced a tray of unbelieveable and very unique vintage settings as a place to start.  I narrowed it down to four possibles and by the end of the week, my fiance and I had selected the winner.  Matt sized it for me that day and I was able to wear it home.

Wonderful service, very competitive prices and unbeatable selection of unique, vintage settings.  Highest recommendation.

The gentleman who helped me was Herb--an older man who looked like he had sons that ran the business with him.  This was the most patient man in the world with my fiancee--i think she tried on a gazillion rings.  He answered all my diamond questions as i was new to the diamond industry.

We went to a smaller store in the same building the next weekend, but they didn't even have a normal Round cut 1 carrot diamond and simply told us they would be on the look out.  No where else did we get the service or the extensive selection.  If you find a ring and want something modified then they'll be happy to do it.  If you pay cash you get 2% discount btw.

We found ourselves going straight back to Herb Gann and looking at more rings. Again he spent about 1 1/2 hours with us going over details of cost to fit our particular budget.  I learned so much and its safe to say I'll be going back for the wedding bands.  Highly recommend this place to all my friends as it was the best experience I've ever had at a jewelery store.

Not just for wedding rings and wedding registry!

I grew up with family in the business of the costume jewelry capital of the world (providence) back in its heyday. Necessarily, the family kept abreast of the precious industry and taught me everything from gemology to pricing, from metallurgy to repair, from procurement to marketing. I am happy to write a 5-star review as a customer who has bought watches, cufflinks, a fine china vase, and such, and who has had appraisal services done.

Whenever I hear from couples planning on getting engaged in my neighborhood or social circles, I always recommend Joseph Gann. I have watched Joshua work with customers on rings, and have seen impeccable service rendered even to one chap seeking a simple engagement ring under $1,000.00. He was able to quickly execute the selection and sale, and his passion was evident. They love their trade, and this is a good and honest family.

But this place has it all, not just phenomenal wedding rings.

The watch selection is vast, and they are an authorized dealer of all the big brands. If you ever have a problem, never worry. I got a lemon once with one Swiss Army watch. I got an email the day after drop: "You're getting a new watch!

If you need accurate appraisals, stand-out cufflinks, every day jewelery, estate jewelery, watches, chains, fine china, fine decor, giftware for baby showers and such  -- it simply makes sense to start and stop here. The best pricing, genuine service, industry passion and broad selection combined with ethics and an amazing knack for assessing customer needs and desires make Joseph Gann Jewelers a magical place.

You'll feel a sense of warmth whether you're dropping in for that 10kt birthstone ring or a pair of day-to-day earrings for your valentine. Ladies will love the selection of men's cufflinks and jewelery.

You'll be glad you bought here, and if you're like me--you'll enjoy feeling like you're their best customer (even if you're far from it!). This is a place you keep for life, from engagement rings to wedding registry to all those neat surprises along the way.

I was very disappointed by my experience with this jeweler. I searched for jewelry/watch repair shops on Yelp and chose Joseph Gann's because of the multitude of extremely positive reviews. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience. I brought my 2-year old, Swiss railway watch in to have the battery replaced. Totally routine. It had always run perfectly. Ever since I picked it up, it has been running poorly, losing hours and days and running behind. I brought it back in, convinced that the jeweler had screwed up the calibration accidentally when he changed the battery. The salesperson told me that the watch was running slowly because it was dirty and that I'd need to pay $30 and have it sent away for cleaning if I want it fixed. I never had any problems until I brought the watch in for service - and I'm convinced it's their fault. I won't be back.

Joseph Gann Jewelers was the one and only place my FI and I went to look at engagement rings.  We were lucky enough to get Matt to help us out.  I came thinking I knew what i wanted but boy was I wrong!  Matt was able to decipher my incoherent ideas of what I wanted and BANG he pulled out this black box from the back with the custom made engagement rings.  The first ring he suggested I try on was the one!  The ring was perfection and I didn't feel the need to look any further.  I was then shooed away by the guys so they could further discuss the ring.  Matt did a great job at being very discreet and my FI was very happy with the entire process.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Joseph Gann Jewelers to anyone looking for engagement rings or just quality jewelry.  These guys are top notch and I have a gorgeous, top quality, sparkly diamond ring to prove it!

    I wish I could give 3 1/2, because I think 3 is a little low...

I had taken my engagement ring in to get it re-sized.  The man I talked to was extremely helpful, obviously extremely knowledgeable and skilled, and was very thorough in asking if my hands swell in heat, if I like wearing jewelry pretty tight, etc.  They were going to have to re-engrave the inside after they made it smaller, which I understood, and I asked if they would mind adding the date, which I was pleasantly surprised they did for free since they were already re-engraving the ring.

When I came back in to pick it up (about a week later -- they called to let me know it was ready), the ring looked stunning and the re-seaming of the platinum was fantastically done.  The ring was really beautiful.  I double-checked the inside, however, and realized that they had mis-spelled the original engraving.  I was frustrated because I had had to give away my ring for a week and now it had a mistake, but the mistake was on their end and the engraving didn't match the order form, so they re-engraved the ring for free (as they should) and had it available for pickup the next day.

I completely understand that this was just an error and has nothing to do with their skill, and I would absolutely take other jewelry there.  I would highly recommend them -- just make sure you double-check your engraving!

This review is for jewelry repair.

I accidentally broke a friend's necklace and therefore offered to replace the clasp.  After hitting up three other jewelers, Joseph Gann was the first to offer the repair quickly (and cost effectively).  Other jewelers were quoting me a minimum of two week repair times for a simple clasp replacement.

I dropped the necklace off at Joseph Gann on a Saturday afternoon and was told they needed to send it out or order the part, but it shouldn't take too long.  Since this was a weekend, I was expecting to hear back from them Tuesday at the very earliest considering they needed time to receive the part and make the repair.  They called me Monday MORNING to let me know it was ready and I picked it up later that afternoon.

Great service.  Fast.  Very reasonable price.  I was also told they have a full time watch repair person.  If I ever break another piece of jewelry or need watch maintenance this will be my first stop.

The first stop and the last stop that my fiance and I went to for engagement rings.  Steve was extremely helpful and showed us exactly what we wanted.  After checking out about 7-8 other places on Washington Street in the diamond building, we returned here because no one else even came close.  Highly recommended.

Run, do not walk, RUN to this place to buy an engagement ring and be sure to ask for Steve when you arrive.

If you have read some of my other posts with regards to my search to find the perfect ring with my now FIANCE :) , you would know that it was not an easy task.

After having such a wonderful experience in my two meetings with Steve and all of the other employees, we knew we were in good hands.

    The Experience:
First off, their approach to engagement ring shopping is above par. They educate you, listen to your needs and produce quality diamonds that are in your budget. When we met with Steve the first time, he showed us some great stones, laid them all out on tissue paper, organized them according to carat and then quality and included all the prices right there.

When he would show you a stone, he would look at it first, find the inclusions and show you them. Ingenious!! It makes shopping for a diamond much more approachable and we felt we actually learned something too. He was always polite, engaging and offered his opinion which was invaluable to us.

    Diamonds:
Although the stones he showed us the first time were lovely, we wanted to see some more. He said he could get some more stones in and in 3 days called the FI to say he had them and even took the time to walk through them all over the phone and included their prices before we made a trip in. The stone he produced the second time were some of the most beautiful stones I have seen and trust me, we have seen alot! They were all so beautiful, that i had a hard time picking one. So we narrowed the choice down to two and he picked out the one he felt encompassed everything that we wanted and boy was he right. The best part was, it was the exact price we were looking to spend.

    The Band:
I wanted something different, very different than the things I see every day at work (i am a wedding planner) and I found something I liked, but it wasn't quite there yet. Steve called over a younger gentlemen (maybe one of the two sons?) who listened to what we wanted, gave some great advice, went down to consult with their jewelery maker and said they could do it. Best part, it was right in our budget again! The ring was custom made in 2 week and is STUNNING!!

I can sincerely say these people hold such a special part in my heart and have made my engagement super special. When the FI came to get the ring, Steve even told him how to leave the store with it conspicuously in his pocket and gave him a little pep-talk too, so nice.

I can not wait to go and have our bands custom made.

As you can see, I highly recommend them and feel that they are some of the only jewelers who actually care and understand that picking out a ring is an emotional and exciting experience.

One observation: if you are planning on going on a Saturday, it is nice and quiet first thing in the morning (i think they open at 10). The first time we went in, it was about 3pm and a zoo!

I bought a Ball watch here last year and it was probably the best experience I've had with a Jewelery store ever. The salesman, I believe his name is Matt was really helpful and the whole process was pressure free. It was the first time I was spending a large sum on a watch, so I was quite nervous.

I definitely intend on going to Joseph Gann for any future jewelery purchases. Really, just stunning and really casual customer service.

They are the best!   Excellent service.  Very helpful, but not at all pushy.  We bought our wedding rings here and they couldn't have been easier to work with  (and my parent's got their wedding bands here over 30 years ago - so my family has loved them for a long time!)
When we went in to try on our rings it was an unseasonably hot day and my husband had trouble getting his on - they were so calm and reassuring - it made us relax and everything ended up working out fine.
They also have a great selection of watches and other jewelry with great prices and excellent value.  I would highly recommend them for fine jewelry!

I spent the summer of 2009 doing a lot of engagement ring shopping with my now-fiancé. We hit all the usual suspects and some of the not-so-usual suspects but ultimately settled on Joseph Gann.

In retrospect, it was almost as easy a decision as to propose to her. Almost, but not quite. We walked in not sure what to expect and maybe a little bit nervous. Well, I was nervous; I think she felt like I would at a Monster Truck rally.

We were fortunate enough to work with Matt Gann while looking at engagement rings. We looked at a few displays in the cases before deciding to look at some vintage hardware. Matt disappeared into the back and came back with his arms bulging with black cases filled with settings. Then one of the more incredible things happened: Matt was patient with us as we picked and pour over settings for the better part of an hour and a half. He would also conveniently disappear for a few minutes when I need to confer with my fiancé or when the search had gone stale. It was never awkward and the timing was always perfect.

After narrowing down setting choices we started looking at loose stones. Matt did a great job mocking up what the final product could look like and explained the myriad differences between the cut, clarity, color, etc. After a few minutes of that we sent my lady away so the two of us could talk about price.

She didn't know I was planning on putting a deposit down but I saw something that I thought she'd like. (Note: She did.) At first Matt reasonably assumed the ring wouldn't be a surprise since we were shopping together. But once I mentioned it would, he went in to ultra stealth mode to throw her off as we quietly conferred. He wrote up the slip, I wrote up a check for the deposit and everything was taken care of until I would come back and pay the balance of the ring.

If that was all Joseph Gann did, I'd consider this a pretty good review. But I had another experience that I've never encountered with a retail establishment: communication via email. Matt was responsive when I hesitantly sent my first email. I'll be honest: I was skeptical. When have you ever heard of someone at a store emailing you? Matt surprised me with quick responses that provided all the information I was looking for, including photos of the ring in its mock-up stage and in its final setting, pre-pick up.

I really couldn't have asked for a better experience.

We always get wonderful service from them- whether or not we are buying or just looking. We found them about 2 years ago when we were looking for a wedding band. Matt was wonderful and helped us find the most gorgeous eternity band. Definitely check them out if you are in the market for diamond jewelry. They are straight shooters and offer very reasonable prices- substantially cheaper than other places like EB Horn.

My fiance and I looked at a number of different Boston jewelers for our engagement ring, including some smaller, family-owned businesses with high Yelp reviews.  The customer service here was second to none.  When shopping for loose stones, our salesman showed us each one under magnification (unprompted) and felt like he was being incredibly straightforward and honest.

The ring was ready in two weeks and looked great.  They also made financing easy.  If you are engagement ring shopping, this place comes highly recommended.

Had such a wonderful experience with this jeweler.  The Jewelry Building can be a little daunting, but their shop is welcoming and their staff is knowledgeable.

I had some pieces I inherited that needed some work getting cleaned, new backs put on the earrings and some jade on a pair of earrings removed.  They gave me a quote true to price and called me twice to ask questions and let me know if anything had changed.  I'll definitely bring my things back here for reworking and cleaning again and again.

If you're in the market to buy, I didn't buy anything, but it didn't stop me from getting an eyeful of all their lovely pieces...

My fiance and I stopped here today on our whirlwind tour of the "Diamond District" in Boston as part of our quest to find my wedding band. This was actually our first stop and a great way for us to begin the day.  Steve was our salesman who assisted us and he was so friendly and knowledgeable of the store's inventory.  He was patient as I tried on a variety of rings and entertained our questions about other random things in the store, such as estate jewelry, pocketwatches, and more.  Unlike other retailers where they follow you around and prod you with questions, the staff here were fine with us strolling around at leisure.  There was absolutely no pressure, but they answered all of our queries.

At the end of our ring viewing, I asked Steve if he could help me take out some links in a watch I had received as a gift recently.  He was so helpful and kind, even placing the extra links in a little bag and envelope.  It only cost $5 as well.

Steve was such a calm and pleasant salesperson (not the case with all of the jewelers in this building if you read my other reviews) and I would visit this store again to have him help us.  We have still not decided where to purchase our rings, but I felt Joseph Gann had a really nice and affordable selection.  Steve told me that this is a family-owned business in its third generation and that impressed me because even though the store is huge, the service is top-notch and very customer-focused.

I've only once purchased jewelry before-- at Kay Jewelers-- and this was a much more personal and satisfying experience.  At Kay, I couldn't even get their attention, and the jewelry I bought fell apart within a year.

But at Joseph Gann, I was pleasantly surprised.  I e-mailed them after browsing their website, looking for a unique engagement ring for my soon-to-be fiance.  I spoke with Matt Gann, and he suggested that I come in, as I could look at their many more options, including choosing the setting and the gemstone separately.  He was very friendly and helpful, and despite the fact that I was shaking like mad out of nervousness, he made the entire transaction very pleasant and non-mysterious.

I've since been back a few times, and spoken with other employees there, and all of them have treated me and my fiance with the same respect and patience that Matt did.

I'm probably not going to be a big spender when it comes to jewelry in the future, but there's no question as to where I'll go first the next time around.

The service is exactly what it should be, knowledgeable, welcoming and helpful. This is family owned business, my favorite, and all of them take pride in making your experience wonderful. My diamond is fabulous! I also took some things I already owned to be cleaned and they look better than the day I bought them! I reset some things as well, everything came out fabulous! My husband and friends have all joined the fan club and everyone is thrilled. It does not matter how small or large your purchase is, you will always feel like a valued client!

I bought an engagement ring and both wedding rings from here.  This place is easily, by far, the best jewelery store I've ever worked with.  I worked with Josh who was awesome and a true pleasure to work with.

After going to 10 different jewelery stores looking for the right stone, it was a relief to find Joseph Gann.  As soon as I walked in I had a feeling this place would be different and they were.

Aside from being great down to earth people in a family owned business type atmosphere, the quality of the stones they had were far superior than what the other stores had in the same price range.  For example, imperfections were in well hidden hard to find places that made the stone truly of good quality.  So, if you were looking at an Si2, it was a good Si2.  Or if it was an Si1, it was a good one, and so forth.

Another really nice thing was that the engagement ring and her wedding ring that I bought was actually made by them.  They were made by Josh's brother.  So, it's nice to have something more unique like that, rather than having a million duplicates out there, and it's also nice to meet the person that made the ring.

She gets more complements on the ring than you could ever imagine.  Women point it out all the time, and often I'm thinking that her ring is the nicest in the room.

    Great place...highly recommended.

Ok, not to be a hater, but I certainly do not think Joseph Gann is worth 5 stars after our experience there looking for wedding rings.  First of all, nobody seemed especially enthused about helping us.  when we finally got someone to help us, i really wasn't impressed with the selection of wedding bands offered to me.  they also weren't helpful in suggesting bands or seeing what i was interested in.  they also seemed taken aback when i asked questions about the rings that they did have- carats, color, clarity.  i felt like i was being dismissed.  so we left.  my wedding ring will not be purchased from joseph gann.

Joseph Gann jewelers dominates the jeweler's building in boston.  An icon in this city for generations.  Josh, one of the Gann brothers, demonstrates how a big ticket purchase should go down.  Josh was hands down thehighlight of my jewelry buying experience.  Me and my wife go and see Josh a few times a year for cleanings, and I refer all my friends there.  Josh and the rest of the staff at Joeseph Gann jewelers make you feel comfortable with your purchase and stand behind their product for life.  I have and will recomend Josh Gann to anyone who will listen.

I noticed a few days ago that the main stone on my engagement ring was loose.  The ring was purchased in Connecticut so taking it back to the jeweler that sold it to us would be a big pain.  I was dreading going to a jeweler in Boston because I was afraid to leave my ring with someone I didn't know - do people really switch out stones when you're not looking?  I have no idea.  I walked into JG without an appointment, spoke to a super friendly older gentleman working there, he took my ring out back for two minutes, tightened the prongs, cleaned it and gave it back to me all sparkly and good as new.  And he didn't charge me a thing!  I will definitely go back here.

I was stopping in to a few different spots each day to pick out my girlfriend's (hopefully fiance's) engagement ring.  I had done a lot of research online so I knew pretty much what I wanted, but was looking to see the difference between various physical aspects of the diamonds (ie, what does a "j" color look like next to "g" next to "d", etc).  The salesman there, to his credit, was very patient with me, showing me the diamonds and giving me reasonable prices.

However, my complaint is that the store itself is pretty drab, and the attitude of the sales staff tends to follow.  This is the biggest, most important purchase in my life thus far, and it seemed like I was in the market for a refrigerator, not the ring that I'm going to use to ask my girlfriend to spend the rest of her life with me.  A little enthusiasm wouldn't kill them!

I had great customer service at several other places, and ultimately that made the difference as to where I picked out the ring.  Nice inventory here, but attitude/customer service could definitely use some tweaking.

Every experience I've had with Joseph Gann Jewelers has been excellent.
Over the years, our family has purchased several pieces, including some custom made, and take all of our jewelry there for cleaning and repair as well.

The reputation and integrity of the company you purchase from is critical with something as intimate and (usually) permanent as an engagement ring. Joseph Gann Jewelers is literally a family that stakes everything on how each customer is treated. Because they stand behind everything they sell, and are scrupulously honest, its obvious why they have an excellent reputation and have been successful for so long.

I visited Joseph Gann in the course of my search for an engagement ring. They had great selection and their offerings appeared to be of high quality compared to other jewelers in the building and the neighboring 333 Washington St. jewelers. However, the prices are significantly inflated. Diamonds were about 15% pricier than at other jewelers (and much pricier than online), while comparable settings cost over twice as much! The salesperson justified the prices with appeals to the sentimental feelings customers frequently have about diamonds and tried to push me towards purchasing the higher-priced platinum over white gold.

If price is no object to you, or you are a skilled negotiator, then Joseph Gann might be for you. Otherwise, I recommend shopping around before you come here.

These guys are great-- My mom (who lives in NY) bought a watch for my dad here because they are the only ones that carry that particular brand.. but since they don't live in the area they let her pay over the phone and have me come pick it up.  I was very impressed.  They also took a substantial amount off of the price of the watch and were just generally sweet.  I am eying a ring there for my birthday :)

The selection at Joseph Gann is outstanding, as is their service.  My now-fiancé and I went shopping together and on a whim decided to try Joseph Gann.  Our experience there was top-notch, so I want to spread the word.  And the great service carried over to when my fiancé went back to actually shop and finalize things.  I was a bit hesitant when we walked in (afraid of more of the same-old solitaires and three stone settings--which they do have, if that's what you are looking for), but we were immediately offered help and asked what we were looking for.  When we told the man we were interested in vintage engagement ring settings, we were sent to speak with Matt Gann, who went off to a vault in a back room and came back with boxes and boxes of settings.  He did SUCH a great job of asking questions and paying attention to what we liked and didn't like to us help narrow down our choices.  I was nervous at first about buying a setting and stone separately (and to be honest, the fiancé did most of the work when it came to the stone), but it turned out to be absolutely the right choice, and Matt was incredibly great at helping us navigate those choices.

And unlike other a couple of other places we went, Matt took us seriously from the get-go, and seemed genuinely interested in helping us find the right thing.  There was zero pressure, and what I can only assume were a few well-timed trips to the back again, which gave my fiancé and me time to talk things over a bit.  I honestly can't say enough good things about Joseph Gann.  Please add them to your list when you start shopping.  I would give six stars if I could -- we'll be back for our wedding bands.
