Jonker Street is running a Roti Telur and Murtabak special on Saturdays.  We came by to check it out a few week ago before our monthly Costco run and it sure was YUMMY.

Roti Telur is basically a Roti Canai with eggs and onions wrapped in the middle. Murtabak is a Roti with meat (usually lamb or beef) wrapped in the middle. Delicious! Paired with a sweet glass of Teh Tarik, you're transported back to Malaysia :)

    * Excellent roti canai *

Ok, let's just get this right out there:  Order the roti canai.

It was the best version I've had in Vancouver.  It was crunchy on the outside, served piping hot, and had nice flaky layers inside.  The curry dipping sauce was flavourful (yet a bit milder than I would have expected).

Also got to taste the laksa which was a decent rendition - although it didn't have enough belachan flavour for my taste so it ended up tasting a bit more coconut like without the strong shrimp flavour I normally associate with a good laksa.  The fish balls were excellent in it, and the shrimp were good.  It didn't have the thick laksa noodles which I love, and they opted instead for what I think were just bee hoon.  But overall a decent dish.

Also had the lamb curry.  The curry was flavourful and nicely spiced (towards the milder side - but it was balanced well).  The lamb varied in quality.  Some pieces were extremely tender and basically perfect, while others were overcooked, chewy, and a bit sinewy.  It was served with some rice, a small salad, and a papadum.  Overall a decent dish.

So I would give the laksa and lamb curry 3 stars and the roti 4.5 stars for a total of 4 stars.  The prices run high for what they offer, but that is expected for the Yaletown location I suppose.

Tasty Authentic Malaysian at the most reasonable prices in Yaletown!

This is my husband's favorite place to go for a casual dinner out. There's no frills here, but the food, the curry, and yes the roti is excellent! The owner is super friendly and will talk your ear off if you let him. :)

    Can't say enough good things.

Great Malaysian place on Pacific next to the liquor store.

Went here for lunch today and I really did quite enjoy it.  Had some Roti (of course,  I could eat Roti the way the Cookie Monster eats cookies!) and Beef Rendang.    Both were quite good, but unlike Marc below I can't go all out for their version of Roti.   While the Roti was good indeed I found it a little more sour than I'm used to and prefer the version that the Banana leaf makes.   Nevertheless it was quite tasty.

Oh, but there's NO murtabak!   I really must find Murtabak,  I miss you dear Murtabak.  Sigh.

Strong recommendation from me to try this restaurant if you like Malaysian.    Makes me miss Singapore...

I want to give this place 3.5 stars!!!!

What blew me away were the appetizers. We started with the Roti Canai
A round, light & flaky bread freshly made and served with curry sauce for dipping.  To me, I could have that every morning as a pastry.  Unbelievable!!!  I found a new carb! I am now searching for places I can buy this for my home.  It's so soft, flaky and literally just melts in your mouth.

Roit Canal is made of ghee, fat, egg, flour and water, mixed together, kneaded, flattened, oiled and folded repeatedly. One of the secrets of making a good roti canai is the ability to skillfully toss the flattened dough in the air several times until a tissue thin piece of dough is formed -- and folding it to trap in the air bubbles.
We wanted to order more but their lunch crowd devoured their entire supply!!

Our second appetizer, the chicken satay with peanut sauce.  Cooked just right paired so well with the chicken. I would have loved the chicken to be a bit zestier in flavour but that is a personal preference.

I ordered the chicken curry for my entree erved with a rice, a side salad and  pappadum cracker. It's not too spicy. I toned the spice by adding in more rice.   It is also served with a side salad and  pappadum cracker.  I found the chicken a little bit over cooked. I had to work to cut the large pieces of chicken.

For dessert,  Sago Gula Melaka  which is basically tapioca served with coconut cream and fragrant palm sugar. Have to admit I wouldn't order it again.  The tapioca balls were bland but the flavour of the coconut cream and palm sugar was delightful to my taste buds,

The gentleman that took our order explained that the only thing he brought over from Malaysia was the palm sugar because you can't get it here,  The genuine artice, my friends!

I want to start by saying that the people that run this place were just super friendly - I just enjoyed the experience there. I love spicy food and they had a couple of spicy dishes that I really enjoyed. The appetizer I had was pretty good too. I have posted pics of the appetizer and the entrée I had.

If you want to go to a small laid back place, you should check out this place.

Jonker Street doesn't have a tonne on the menu for vegetarians, but I'd gladly make a meal out of the roti canai. Of all the Malaysian restaurants that I've been to in Vancouver, theirs is my ultimate favourite that every other roti gets compared to. "Mmm, really good, but not as good as Jonker Street!" Now that the Canada Line is running, there is no excuse not to pop in for a roti fix.
