Rolled into Joker's with Mike and some friends the other night to attend a fundraising event, involving a screening of two 80s comedy flicks (The Princess Bride and Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail...how could you go wrong?) one night this past week, and had a blast.
The club is actually larger than I expected, with ample seating (though admittedly not the most comfortable, damn you thinly-cushioned wooden chairs...). The food was okay, your average pub fare. The fiance and I split the nachos, not the worst I've ever had, but admittedly not great either, a little on the overcooked side, without enough cheese (why do so many restaurants skimp on the cheese, by far the best part of the nacho experience?).
What made the night at this club was the service. Our waitress was one of the friendliest and most attentive servers I have met in a while. She checked on us often, without being obtrusive, made conversation and cracked jokes (I consider it a bonus if even the wait staff at a comedy club can make me laugh...), and was very prompt in bringing us our many food and drink orders.
Overall, I thought this was a pretty decent club for what it is, and I plan on returning to take in some of their comedy acts in the future. Maybe I'll start with Picnic Face, who do weekly shows here, and who I've surprisingly never seen in action before (very un-Haligonian of me, I know).Listed in: Now THAT'S Funny!

I'm thinking this is what a comedy club should be. Dark, dingy, smells like beer with drunk unsuspecting (or stupid) people in the front row heckling the main acts.
I went a few months ago to see Doug Stanhope. Was super surprised to see a huge line up and was a bit worried about because the venue is on the smaller side. Not to worry though, I managed to snag my group some pretty awesome seats and although the place was packed it never felt too packed.
It would be nice to see Joker's bring in some more bigger acts. Picnic Face are great don't get me wrong but I would love to see some international comedians in Halifax too. -

The lovely people of Picnik Face reeled me in for a first time Joker's experience. Sunday nights are improv and stand-up, and so it seems, that this group of jokesters attract a quite a crowd.
For $5, folks can take to this cosy basement lounge and get a few hours of hilarious entertainment. The full show starts at 8pm and goes until about 10:30, and its a small price to pay for happiness.
I'd convinced a friend to meet me there for this trial run, and after finding a comfy seat by the bar, I was coaxed into a sure gigglefest. The crowd seems to range around the 20 somethings to early 30 somethings, as we seem to be the age group drawn to such self deprecating, dry, and sometimes crude forms of humor.
Its a packed house, and filled with good energy. Everyone is laughing, some drinking, and others eating-- as I noticed waitresses carting around large plates of nachos and other apps. Its generally a great atmosphere with lots of alloted space that gets filled up fairly quickly.
I'll be curious to see what else goes on at this happy little place. I had a great time-- the show went far too quickly for my liking-- and look forward to next time. The staff was friendly, the performers had me in a fit, and the space is cosy and complete. See you next Sunday! -

I'm weary of comedy clubs. This is because I find it really uncomfortable when a comedian tells a bad joke that bombs. I've seen this happen so often that I've taken to avoiding the places all together, but on a whim I decided to check out a show last Saturday.
I am happy to report it was funny and I found myself laughing quite a bit. I guess the quality of a place like this is only as good as the talent they showcase. If Jokers has comedians this funny on a regular basis then I'm sure it's a great place to go for a laugh.
Every Saturday night Jokers hosts a taping of Late, Live and Peter White, a talk show in the vein of David Letterman or Conan. It's good for a laugh and free, which is always nice. If you do decide to go to a taping, be sure not to sit behind the camera man. he doesn't like to sit down and will leave you shifting in your seat trying to catch a glimpse of the visuals.
Free, funny shows, a great location on Spring Garden Road and decent appetizers make Jokers a great place to spend a few hours and have a laugh.
