It was good. We came for the first time last week on a weeknight. I should have gone with my gut and ordered steak in a steakhouse, but I wasn't feeling it.
The bread at the beginning of the meal is pretty amazing - soft, warm, delicious. The salad was ok - too much dressing!
I ordered the lobster tail - it was fairly dry and tough. The roasted garlic mashed potatoes that came with it were ah-maaaaz-ing. I tried my husband's beef wellington, it was quite good. My parents were with us, and they both loved their meals as well.
We also ordered dessert to share - cannoli was "meh", the pastry was too dense and greasy to be good, the creme brulee was nice (it needed a thicker burnt sugar topping), and the cheesecake was pretty good.
Our waitress was friendly, but kept referring to my mother as "Mama", which I thought was odd and I think my mother was mildly offended. Her demeanor was more like that of a truck stop waitress than that of a server in a nice steakhouse.
I'd probably go back and give it another try - I just wasn't overwhelmed with what I ordered or the service. -

Ok. It's official. The management is trying to capitalize off a name that once meant something. Prices have gone up and they have cut out key quality ingredients.
In addition the big glass Martinis are now sold in a smaller glass but cost an additional $3! (they're $10! In Des Moines!)
Oh, and the service was apathetic, lazy and rude, from the host AND the bartender. Skip this place and go to Centro.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

How sad - ordered the veal parm and got a shoe heel with ketchup on top. I know I am in Iowa but I didn't check my tastebuds with my bags - wholly cow, don't get ripped off, 10 restaurants within walking distance but don't eat this swill!
Bartender, still happy with my 20% but doesn't know I am in my room brushing my tounge with mint. -

I go here once a year when I am in town with friends. I hope that next year we were go elsewhere. The service is so unbelievably slow and the menu hasn't changed or been updated in at least 3 years. On our most recent visit, it took a full hour before our orders were taken or we were even brought bread. We were all starving. At some point I ordered a glass of wine - it was my second glass (the first had been ordered at the bar). When it finally showed up 20 minutes later, I tasted it - it was horrendous. I told the server the wine was off. She told me that they were out of what I'd ordered and that was something else. Did they think I wasn't going to notice? And hey, thanks for telling me. I sent it back and somehow a glass of what I'd originally ordered appeared. Seems pretty sketchy to me. Not sure what the attraction is to this place, I say - go somewhere else.

Love it!! What a pleasant surprise after a long day on the road! Deep dark booths, Sinatra singing, strong martinis, fresh hot bread, REAL cutlery that has a good heft to it. We each ordered giant steaks and glasses of red wine and dug in. We were basically the last patrons in the place (~10pm) but did not feel rushed. Bathrooms are immaculate! A wonderful place for dinner.

I have never been to this steakhouse before. It was next door to my hotel and was too tired to drive elsewhere. I had the stuffed pork chops which was the best I had. It was filled with polenta and grounded proscuto. Waitress was courteous and served my salad in chilled bowl and kept my glass filled. I would come here again.

Due to family travels, flight schedules and proximity to our hotel, ate dinner here two consecutive nights. First night chicken parm and the second night a pork loin chop special. The chicken parm was too heavily breaded and over cooked for my taste. My side dish was pasta with marinara sauce. Given the restaurant's roots I expected a robust marinara sauce and was quite disappointed.. As for the pork chop, it was nothing that can't be had at scores of restaurants in the pork State, Iowa. My daughter and I split a creme' brûlée for dessert and, again, nothing special.

Great steaks in a classic American steakhouse atmosphere--high booths, lush interior, quiet jazz in the background, cool and private feeling. Friendly, attentive service and interesting wine list. We had a great lunch at a reasonable price; I highly recommend it for a nice meal and conversation.

The Goods: Decor and atmosphere is cool. The appetizer combo platter is bomb dot com.
The Bads: Salad was soggy and almost inedible (how do you mess up a salad?), The Filet Trio, was horrible. The trio was highly recommended by our server so I proceeded to order it Med-Rare. I was presented with a plate that had 3 quarter-sized pieces of meat that were cooked well done. I usually don't send things back and didn't on this occasion either, but maybe i should have.
Bottomline: I would go back if we were just doing apps and drinks, but never again for a full dinner. -

First of all...our server Elle was amazing. She came at the right time and was not over bearing. We ordered our food and it was the best meal I have had in my life. I was a little skeptical because hey it's IA...do they really know how to cook a steak? YES THEY DO! The fiance and I might even change our honeymoon plans in March so that we come up here to eat at Johnny's! I can't wait to come back.

I stay at the Radisson when I come down to Des Moines for business, and it's always the easiest option to go to Johnny's for dinner.
The decor is really intimate, dark woods, and low lightings. Better than I expected for this type of restaurant. Service is consistently good.
Food is pretty good. Room service is nice. They bring you so much food, and it's relatively cheap for all the food you get for room service. :) I was a happy camper last night when I checked in at 8:30pm and had a nice steak delivered to my room for dinner shortly thereafter.
Their free breakfast isn't that good. But can't complain because it's free.Listed in: Italian

I wanted to take my newlywed friends out for an Iowa steak but didn't want to spend a bloody fortune. I checked in on Yelp....and found Johnny's Italian Steakhouse. It's not Morton's but we had a damned fine dinner for a not too exorbitant price and walked away full as can be.
The Little Italian Combo started us off. It was massive! Johnny's sausage bread is something else...also with calamari, bruschetta, mozzarella marinara. Yum-mee!
I opted for the Parmesan crusted New York Strip...rare. It was perfectly done and very, very tasty. Rikki had the steak with shrimp and heaps of garlic mashed taters while Chris chose the char-broiled rib eye, which was what he'd said he wanted before we set out. None of us left hungry.
Local beers, hefty cocktails and a Italian/Rat Pack kind of decor. I'd go back. Maybe next time I'll have room for dessert, but I doubt it. -

Without a doubt some of the best steaks in Des Moines! My preferred cut is a ribeye so I ordered theirs medium rare and topped with blue cheese, it was amazing! Cooked perfectly and the Maytag blue cheese was so complimentary to the steak instead of overpowering. I have also had good luck with their Sam Adams marinated steak.

One of the things that I liked about Johnny's was that the decor. It is top drawer. All the dark wood and tall booth's make you feel like you are in a nice place. The service is good. Is it better then other restraunts that charge this much, not really, but it is on par with other restraunts of this caliber.
The food was decent. My Girlfriend liked her pasta She had the Chicken Minelli. Mine was OK. I had the Angel Hair Pasta Basilico style with Chicken. I liked the sausage bread that we had for an appetizer more then the main course.
The price I quote below is two pasta dinners. Appetizer and two glasses of wine. -

Excellent Food, Service, Atmosphere. One of the best places in DSM! Comfortable tall booths ... servers are usually spot on. Frank and friends fill in the background sounds ... smooth.

Pretty great spot for the price/quality. Steaks are appealing but would recommend the seafood skewers.
