This airport is the first and last thing that many travelers visiting the Greatest City in the World see. And it's unfortunate.

The major issue with JFK is that the airline you fly has too much influence over your airport experience. Terminal 3 is an embarrassment. Terminal 5, a joy.

Overall though, NYC should be (and we are!) ashamed of the majority of this bootleg airport, with its constant delays, bag issues, interminable security lines and general dirtiness. However, it's all relative. Compared to LaGuardia, this (and nearly every) airport is fantastic. Let's not even talk about Newark.

    Or Jersey in general. Ever.

I only fly outta here when I'm leaving the country, which is once a year. Can't really complain too much because it's close to where I live (but a pain to get to using public transportation from my apartment- I always rent a car or do car service.) Getting here from Midtown isn't too bad, though.

I'm sitting in Terminal 4 right now as we speak (Amsterdam here I come!) and it's not too shabby. The gate is clean, I snagged my own power outlet, and I just finished dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings (I f***ing LOVE Buffalo Wild Wings... It's my guilty pleasure.) So I'm a happy camper so far.

Wish they would provide free wi-fi. Paying $4.95 an hour to Boingo is not my cuppa tea. There is a lot of construction going on so I hope it yields a better traveller experience in the future.

Good luck and safe travels! :)

I like this airport better then the other airports I've been too for these reasons:

    1. Its close to me
    2. I think once you're parked, navigating is easy
    3. If you want to take public transportation, you don't have to take a stinky bus like you do from LGA or a taxi, you can take the train
    4. I fly delta or jetblue outa here and both terminals are nice
    5. No one from the TSA has physically accosted me here.

I think that people tend to forget that they're going to airports when they go to airports.  The food isn't going to be wonderful, there are going to be a lot of people there, and you might occasionally run into a problem.  You are not at the Ritz, my friends, you're at an airport in Queens.  My biggest complaint when I travel is the people that don't travel often and get in my way - but thats just an ID10-T error, not an airport problem.  Hell, if I based all my reviews on the people frequenting the areas, I'd never give anyone a good review because people are retarded.

One caveat though - I get lost in a parking lot - literally, and have gotten lost driving around JFK.  Even though its a circle.  Shut up, you could probably get lost too, dippy.

I really thought this airport would be better than the one here in San Francisco and the best in the United States. Supposedly it's the busiest in North America/U.S.A. but when I went it was dead as a desert. Also not all terminals are connected so that was kind of bizarre. Also I was really looking forward for all the "fun" atmosphere of being in New York City. Going through security was really mediocre and this mean lady was mugging us just because we did not walk through properly through the scanning body thing. When I arrived it was nice but dead.
Also I really like that this was the place where Pan Am was huge in the 1960's in terminal 3; back then this airport was called Idlewild. Sadly the flying saucer will be demolished. Decent airport but not the best in my book but I prefer to fly into this airport than LaGuardia or Newark.

I prefer to fly in/out of Newark but... JFK is fine and gets the job done.  If you're going to/from the city you can take the AirTrain and the subway for just a few bucks.  It ain't the Mudd Club or CBGB... it's a freakin' airport and it gets that flying and landing part pretty good.

The thing I like the most about JFK would definitely be the convenience of the layout. Unlike other airports, it is nice having a clear idea as to where I am going in addition to having the airplanes land pretty close to where any connecting flights may be (I'm looking at you, Miami International).

This is a pretty inexpensive airport to fly in and out of, although all the airports around NYC fall into this category.  My only complaint would be the food availability in the terminals.  Once headed down a terminal, the options are very limited.

This criticism is only about the INSIDE of the airport. I have never picked anyone up from JFK.

Being from NY and having flown out of JFK literally about  100 times, I sort of have a close relationship with my hometown airport. With that being said, well it's sort of a love hate relationship..... And F me, their pick up/drop off situation is a bloody mess!!!

I really want to give you 5 stars my beloved JFK, but your labyrinth of roads leading nowhere, signs that you need an degree in mechanical engineering to understand where the hell you are will now allow me to do so.

This airport is not the best but then it's not the worst.  I find the food selections to be too limited. One has the ability to move around quickly from place to place with people movers and escalators and the air train.  I think my biggest complaint about this airport is the limited food selections.

Quite possibly the worst designed airport in the United States.

No, seriously, did someone give their 3-year old four colored crayons and a blank sheet of paper with the direction of "create daddy/mommy an airport"...  Modern architecture and design be damned in this place, and I hear you've had several renovations over the years (again by 3-year olds).

Not only is the design completely out of whack, but also I swear it has neither heat nor air conditioning.  I don't think they've ever bothered to install modern technology in this place - finding an electricity outlet is like trying to invent cold fusion.

The restaurant choices are poor, the layout is awful, and without a 2 hour layover you are guaranteed to miss your connection if you are coming off an international flight to try to get to a domestic flight.

I do not enjoy this airport.  Ugh.

Never a dull moment in this airport.  Between all the people and all the airplanes, this place is super-busy.

This airport is centered in a city that's considered to be in one of New York City's outer boroughs.  The airport is made up of several separated building-terminals, each having a variety of airlines and airport services, most of which are major-brand services from the "corner store" to food-establishments(most known nationwide.)

Security moves quickly through this airport, however lines are long at times, and when the security level is heightened, so does the line intensify and heighten too.  Security though does a good job at TRYING to weed out bad people from the good people.

No matter where you come from in this airport, this airport is tied together by a monorail(non-driven) rail line, that gets you from terminal to terminal.  However, you must exit the building and walk to the rail entrance across the street(which can get very chilly or rainy)-so there is one of the cons to using this airport.

Seating at the gate is plentiful for most airline gates, but be extra careful if you are meeting someone and be on the lookout for signs directing you closely to the direction of travel for baggage pickup.  Some walkways inside the airport that lead from one terminal to another(such as between the two Delta terminals) were a bit dark and seemed a bit drury.

I won't mention what other cons other New Yorker's hear about this airport, in fear you'll be ending up loosing your lunch. But between smuggling and sex-abuse, this place has it's reputation in this department too(but the police are almost always right on top of this, and have been known to travel around the airport in plain-days clothes(private investigator style)...so watch your back, you never know who's watchin' you!

Personally, with comparing the many airplane lines here, to the limited availability of long-distance flight at the cross-town LaGuardia(code: LGA), I'd rather pick this airport over the LGA.  Now that I've experienced it all, I know a little of what to expect.  Just get to know all you can about the airport, before making your final decision.

I hate this airport. Everytime I head to the NYC area I always dread the idea of flying into JFK. It's the largest of the three NYC airports and it's the most convenient, but it's dirty, crowded, prehistoric, and ghetto.

However, since the airport is so large there are numerous flight options from the West Coast and JFK offers easy access into Manhattan.

I grew up in Jersey, so EWR was always my airport. After I moved to the city, I was introduced to JFK, and I wonder how we ever lived without each other.

JFK is New York City's airport. Flights might go to LGA or EWR, but this is the big guy. Cabs from Manhattan are around $50 each way. The subway and LIRR both go here, and then you buy a $5 AirTrain ticket, so it's easy to get here via public transportation. There are pretty good stores and restaurants here too, and are more high-end to accommodate NYC's international travelers. I went to a great wine bar in Terminal #7 that had local NYS wines and short rib tacos. It's amazing to have that in an airport. They also have regular pubs and sports bars.

As for Customs and Immigration, leave yourself plenty of time. I've gotten through in 15 minutes (6pm Saturday), and then another time it took around an hour (3pm Sunday) when several European flights all came in at once. The employee was rude and disorganized, and failed to make an organized line. She bossed us around and gave us all Southeast Brooklyn attitude. It was at that moment that I felt like I was back at home.

When you pick up your friend/lover/brother/sister etc. from this place, make sure you know exactly when their flight gets in, or else you're going to be waiting quite a bit driving around or parked on the shoulder of the highway, waiting to get the call from them saying that they're ready.

JFK is NYC's major airport, there's also Laguardia, Newark (which is in NJ), and Islip (Southwest flies here).  The LIRR goes here so you can transfer from Jamaica for the AirTrain and you're right there.  The lines at the security checkpoint are long no matter what time you get there so try to get there early.  If your battery's running low on your phone/laptop, try to find an outlet along the wall behind or in the cracks of the seat because the Panasonic posts of outlets are either all taken up or too crowded to get into.

Ok, I know it's a legacy architecture from before there was human flight, but is this really the best we can do after years of renovations?

Arriving, what you notice first is that your (AT&T) phone doesn't has a signal while on the runway.  Huh?

Transit between terminals and to ground transit is terrible.  Signage is confusing until you essentially next to the place you're navigating to.

    Hate this airport.

Like many old people asking for merchandise at the Target, the answer to the question on whether or not JFK stinks is "depends".

It depends on which terminal, when you're flying and with what airline.  The security lines are always so long at Terminal 3 (Delta) but sometimes you can get in Terminal 2 or Terminal 4 very easily.  Terminal 3 is run down, but they'll be replacing that shortly.  Terminal 4 isn't bad and has very easy Air Train access.

It's a pain to get there, but compared to LaGuardia, I get out of JFK on time more.  So I'm giving this three stars.

No real complaints with JFK.  We were able to make our flight with time to spare at the American terminal.  Years ago I missed a connecting flight here while flying internationally and it seems like making an international transfer hasn't gotten any better based on the Yelp reviews.  Allow yourself a lot of time if that what you are at JFK for.

this place is a huge clusterfuck of epic proportions.

out of all the airports, this seems to be the most frenetic, and inconvenient. everything is far from each other, and it took me a while to find the exit. by the way- if you have someone waiting to pick you up, there are "pick up" spots on the ground floor. when you land, you need to go all the way down, down, and you'll spot the little green signs, and everyone screaming and honking each other to death.

    welcome to to ny.

Flown through this airport many times.  Always a hit or miss as to whether or not you're going to get your luggage, get on your flight or take off in a timely manner.  The experience waiting at this airport isn't ridiculously awful.  Actually... it's a little pleasant even taking into consideration the fact that they're probably running behind.

I can't get mad or blame them for any lateness though.  Every employee I saw was working their butt off... and let's be honest, they don't have the greatest job ever considering how many angry people they have to deal with!!!  The fact that the good majority of them have smiles on their faces and are as helpful as possible is a freaking miracle.  This is a crazy busy airport, so calm down and cut them some slack!

So, I think JFK is one of the better airports out there.  I definitely prefer it to LaGuardia.  It's just lacking.  It's a huge airport with so many terminals.  Yet, I feel that many of this terminals need to be updated.  Terminal 5 is cool though.

Food quality is mediocre (but did you really expect greatness to come from airport cafeterias??), but (most) staff members will kindly guide you to where you need to go.

This was my first time flying out of JFK & it will be my last. We flew in with no problems, but flying out was a different story. We arrived by taxi 2 hours before our departed time. We did curb side check-in & when we went inside the security line for Delta was HUGE. We waited in the line for nearly 2 hours! They had ONE security guy slowly looking at both the express line & regular line boarding passes. Finally after 2 hours & barely moving, they also had ONE security scanner for everyone to go through. Then we had to take a bus to our terminal. We got there right before our flight departing time, which was 7:00pm. Only to board the plane & wait until 8:00 for the rest of the passengers to get through security. By that time it started getting foggy & rainy, so we sat on the tarmac an additional hour & a half. So total we were at the airport 4 1/2 hours before our plane left. I will never fly here again. I live in Las Vegas & I'm use to our airport approximately having around 8 security check-in areas that usually takes only 20 minutes to get through,

Flew LAX to JFK this passed weekend.  Have made this trip more than two dozens times in my life.  Whether I was flying to NYC or heading to Europe and beyond.  I have been souring on JFK since trip number fourteen or fifteen a couple years back.   This trip was just a weekender.  Thursday to Sunday.  Left LAX via Delta first class it was an easy peasy non stop flight.  6:30 AM departure, I popped two Ambien and slammed a Beam and coke before car service picked me up.  The drive to LAX, LAX, and the 3000 miles across the country were not a problem at all.   The problem was JFK.  Those of you that have made this flight know that flying to JFK you basically fly to Cleveland and turn right.  Then about three quarters the way over Pennsylvania you begin your decent and approach.  That's when the pilot usually comes on and tells you which runway you will be hitting at JFK.  This flight our pilot came on and  gave us the bad news.  Runway 22.  There was a sigh on the plane.  But this is where the bad news just begins.  We hauled ass across country and were 15 minutes early into New York.  HOWEVER.  After three approaches to bring us in by JFK Air Traffic Control we were ordered to fly up Long Island to basically Montak and come down the sound and land at 22.  So at this point landing 15 minutes early now is 15 minutes late.

Then we head towards our gate, Terminal 3 at JFK.  Remember we landed on Runway 22 the outside runway at JFK and we have to make our way inside to the Terminals.  Most airports have a loop around all the runways that allow the planes to taxi freely without having to stop for landing and departing aircraft.  Not JFK.  So we turn right and head towards Terminal 3 and come to our first runway.  And wait, 5 minutes for a small commuter plan to land.  The engines fire up and we roll across that runway to the next runway and wait 15 minutes while an Emirates 747 lands.  Then across that runway to the next another 10 min this time for a Delta flight to land.  After the pilot came on to apologize to everyone and promise that connecting flights would not be missed we sat another 5 mins while cars had the right away and a line of twenty or thirty crossed in front of us.  The cherry on top of this was the waiting to be towed into our gate another 5 to 10 minutes.  In total.  15 minutes early turned into *drum roll please* 55 minutes to an Hour! LATE!!!!!  NO JOKE.  To say everyone on the plane was pissed is an understatement.

And this wasn't even the worst part of the JFK experience.   I get off the plane,  and I walk into a flock of pigeons?  What is this?  Some third world country?  Pigeons in the Terminal?  All I need know is some crazy old man throwing bits and pieces of bread at the them.  However that wasn't necessary as Terminal 3 was absolutely filthy by AIRPORT STANDARDS!!!  What a dump.  I couldn't get the hell out of JFK fast enough.  Luckily I had car service waiting to pick me up and get me the hell out of there and they did.  Once in the car I planned my day, AN HOUR LATER THAN PLANNED.  Thanks JFK, NOT!

This is a review for Terminal 3. What an embarrassment.

Just getting into the terminal via the parking garage is a challenge. I'm still not sure whether it's possible to do this without using a series of mis-marked, too-small elevators.

I understand that the whole terminal is slated for demolition in 2015. In the meantime, half the soaring space is completely cordoned off, so the check-in area is cramped, lacking signage, and seemingly falling apart. In fact, the leaky ceiling is covered in white tarps that siphon water via a rubric of hoses. There are birds flying around the interior. Really.

It would be beautiful if it were an art project. Alas, it's an airport, which ought to convey modernity, efficiency, and safety. I would think twice about flying Delta or KLM  based on what I saw here.

HANDS DOWN THE WORST AIRPORT I'VE EXPERIENCED TO DATE. And that's saying a lot for someone who's usually flying at least a few times a year.
Hate the fact that it can take me 20 mins to run from one gate to another and with the crowds that same distance can take twice as much.

As for the duty free shop, it sucks. They do have some good deals but if you're traveling to a Asian country, do your duty free shopping over there instead. It's much cheaper.

Wow...just wow, and not a good wow.
So landing here an hour after my scheduled time...it was quite a huff of a walk just to get to the air tram to get to the subway station for me to get to Manhattan.

I came and flew through the JetBlue terminal, which people have told me from the past is one of their 'better' terminals. Wait, are you for reals?!

The departing set up for passengers to get through with TSA is an absolute pain. Again, simple process of having lines to go smoothly doesn't exist here and it wouldn't hurt if one, just one, TSA agent didn't look like they were stuck in prison (well, it is an airport...)

Oh vei...and getting here via a taxi... I actually almost threw up from the taxi ride here from mid-Manhattan because of all the traffic and congestion to get to this airport.

Good luck to anyone passing by this airport during the holidays. Better drink up before you head out!

I actually prefer this airport over LaGuardia because at least there is a reliable public transportation way to get to JFK - just take the E train to Sutphin Blvd (or A train to Howard Beach) and then transfer to the AirTrain for $5 off your metrocard.  Alternatively, you can take the LIRR from Penn Station to Jamaica and transfer to the AirTrain.

Sure, using public transportation does take some time (I don't have an express helicopter, unfortunately) but for the price what more could you ask?  (the subway + airtrain costs you $7.25 -- I mean come on.  The taxis will run you at least $45 to around $80 or so...)

Another option: take the subway to one of the Queens stops and then get on a bus.  It counts as a transfer so the total is still $2.25!  But this option kinda sucks.  I've tried getting off at Kew Gardens and then taking one of the Q buses to JFK but that's a nightmare because the traffic on the road is usually pretty bad, and a million people at any time are in line for these buses.

The security lines here at most of the terminals are usually slow - I think they should open more stations instead of having like five or more TSA agents idle at any given time.

JetBlue terminal is really clean and shiny, with a Muji Express (yesss).  American Airlines terminal is so-so.  I don't remember the other terminals but you can read the other reviews for those.

JFK and I have a bittersweet relationship and it's been like that for the past 15 years I've been flying from them.

Of all the terminals, I like Terminal 7 the best. Actually, I LOVE Terminal 7..is that a bad thing? I take all my international flights from there and they have this cozy, crammed setting which I oddly kind of like. All the shops are together and at your convenience, unlike the other terminals where every station, whether it's a bathroom or news stand is a half of a mile apart.

It is a nightmare to get here, especially if you don't live around the Brooklyn-Queens-Nassau borderlines, there is heavy traffic during rush hour. I always try to get here about 1.5-2 hours before my flight and I remember this one time, many years ago, my family & I were here early and these agents were letting specific people cut us, we almost missed our flight! It was so horrible.

The worst time to ever be at this airport (or any airport for that matter) is during the holidays. Food will run out and there will be long lines everywhere, it's like the post-apocalypse at an airport.

Ahhhh...JFK.  So many memories of this place.  I prefer to fly here in NY because it is easier and closer to anyone who might need to pick me up.  I also get that fuzzy warm inside feeling when I can see the NYC skyline and that familiar side dip right before landing that makes me say "Honey I'm home!"  Definitely not the friendliest and easiest airport to navigate, but better than Laguardia.  The people working inside have gotten friendlier, but be careful of the bullies at your pickup spot.  I will say I had a very easy check in at US Airways this time around.  This terminal has quieter drop-offs, pickups and check ins than AA, Delta or Jetblue.

    QUICK 1 HOUR LAY OVER

    ---American Airlines---

The time I was there, my experiences was meh. Nothing PERSONALLY DISTURBING happened to me, however what i observed was surprising.

There was an ALARM GOING OFF at a gate for 10 minutes and no one was stopping it. People were walking by covering their ears, and employees were not even concerned about fixing the problem.

Plus, when I was sitting there waiting for my flight to begin boarding, some of the employees were arguing with each other. An older customer went up to their desk trying to ask a question, yet they simply ignored her and continued their argument with each other. After 3 minutes of just standing in front of them waiting to be acknowledged, she just walked away.

The only reason why I gave them a 3 star was because MY personal experience was meh, and the other times I have been at this airport, my experience was alright.

Fairly easy to maneuver around despite its size.  The air train takes you through/to all terminals.  When I landed, I got to baggage claim and out to the tracks w/o a problem however, I wish there were more obvious signs to get you from the terminal(s) to the air train.

Normal subway rides (1) will cost you $2.25 but to get out of the airport, you will need to purchase a $5 Metro Card along w/ $2.25 to get onto the A train.  BTW, the unlimited pass is not accepted here.

I flew in from SFO via Delta Airlines.  When I departed NYC, I flew w/ Jet Blue Airways... please come at least an hour and a half upon your departure because the security lines at Jet Blue moves at a turtle pace.

This airport suffers only from too much traffic. I can't even count how many times I've flown out of Delta gate 23 too only be delayed. (If you fly domestically through delta out of JFK, you KNOW this dreaded gate).

The amenities and layout are fine. I always take a cab from the city and it's a flat rate.

I've had some easy, great experiences and I've had some HORROR stories. At the end of the day, it's an airport... A giant, man eating airport.

If you're flying JetBlue this is a 3 star airport (still not 4 or 5 because getting to your terminal still is not easy or pleasant)!  If you're not...I'm sorry.

The other terminals aside from JetBlue Terminal 4 lack food options, very few restaurants mostly grab n' go pop-ups.  Probably the rudest and angriest TSA people I have ever met.  And getting to JFK unless you take the Subway to the Airtran is a nightmare from Manhattan (depending on traffic it can take you anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 hours...not exaggerating or kidding).  Needless to say, I don't like JFK but I love Virgin America when I fly out to the West Coast, and I really like JetBlue, and both airlines fly out of here so I bite the bullet, I plan insanely ahead on getting there, I pack snacks, and I wait or have to run (depending on traffic) to my flight.  Newark is still the better airport serving the NYC area.

Getting off one flight and trying to catch our connecting involved journeying through long, tight, dim corridors to find our gate in a small room, entirely clogged with people (mostly senior citizens), and no available seats for the majority of them.

When the flight began to board, it was like a cattle call, with no order to it. People rushing and shoving the gate like it was the last Xbox on Black Friday in Porter Ranch. I mean, I've been through places where people didn't seem to believe in lining up, but this was bedlam and the people working the gate looked on with glazed expressions.

The sole ladies' room in the hall had two (out of three) working toilets, with a line out the door. Considering the line was mostly senior citizens, no one was in a hurry to get their business done so others could also quickly make a donation to the porcelain god.

Food options at Terminal 3 were terrifying in terms of prices and lack of choice. Since we'd just come in on a cross-country red-eye and weren't given anything other than peanuts and nothing more for sustenance, we were ravenous. One option, the closest to our gate, had sandwiches for $12 and chips for $7.

We ended up walking all the way back to our first gate to check out the Burger King upstairs. Four value menu items priced at $3 above the usual BK deals across the short board, but it was still cheaper than the other options. Didn't get a chance to eat my meal until we got on the plane.
