I got a YELP account, just to rave about this restaurant.
Seriously, best authentic Chinese food in Halifax. Not the quick fix low quality like you would find at the fast food places. I find a lot of people go to an authentic Chinese food place and are unimpressed when they can't find their sesame chicken, etc... The reason is because those are NOT authentic Chinese specialties.
They specialize in AUTHENTIC SZECHUAN, which is hard to come by in a small city like Halifax, A few good dishes I would recomend anyone to try is the dry-fried beef, the hot and sour soup, a really delicious cucumber salad (it's not on the menu, but they make it by special request) called "liang ban huang gua" (transliteration: lyang bahn hwang gwah).
Their dumplings are also out of this world.
If you're a fan of spicey, delicious, and authentic Chinese food, this is the place. Don't waste your time anywhere else. -

I would like to start this review by saying that the food here is actually top notch. It does take a really long time to get your food, but at least it's good.
I took it upon myself to write this review in order to warn others. The first time we went my husband received a really long black hair in his chicken dish. The second time we ordered delivery and I had a staple in my pork.
Needless to say, we will not be back. Both times we thought that the food was great. That is until we found a nice suprise in our meals. -

FYI - the JiXiang is open again after its Winter break. The food is still the best hot spicy food in Halifax! I dare you to find such a diverse menu - not that I am in any way a fan of some of the dishes. Just for conversation you should drop in for a meal and to read their offerings.
But back to the food - if you want to get away from the "sweet and sour chicken" crowd this is a must. If you are accompanied but such a person, I think there are 5 or 6 items at the very back of the menu to keep them happy.
Yesterday our waitress was able to put a bit of a scare in me that maybe the dish that I ordered (stir fried pork with spicy green peppers) would be too hot. It was not too hot, but it was great with lots of flavour.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Review from Sweet W.
While we loved the seafood driving the Cabot Trail, we were very happy to find this place for our one dinner in Halifax.
The Cumin Lamb & Twice Cooked Pork were terrific. Well worth the cab fare from our harborside hotel.
Place was dead on a Saturday night, one other table of two. They were busy with takeout so I sure hope the place survives. -

While wandering along Quinpool at 9:40pm, looking for a place to feed that didn't close at 10 I came across here (11pm on Saturday). Slowly picking through the menu I decided I wanted to try one of the lunch specials, Gong Bao chicken with steamed rice accompanied by an eggroll. I asked the waitress if I could still order off the lunch menu despite it being very much past lunch, all turned up good in the hood, there just would be an additional $2 charge. The food arrived hot and looking quite tasty. The Gong Bao chicken came with stir fried veggies, chicken pieces, chili peppers, and peanut halves. There was also a "medium" and "hot" option to select. I chose the medium and it was the perfect amount of spice to taste ratio. Spicy, but to the point where you can still taste what you're eating. The steamed rice was of course what you would except, the eggroll was not great, not terrible. The Gong Bao chicken was delightful! Definitely something I would crave again. Overall good experience, pleasant staff, quiet atmosphere and I feel as if there are plenty more gems to be discovered on their menu. I plan to further investigate.

This is a no-holds-barred Szechuan restaurant, not to be confused with the ever-popular westernized "Chinese" restaurant, or the fairly accessible Cantonese style.
At JiXiang the dishes are loaded with hot peppers and Szechuan peppercorn, for a fiery and mouth-tingling experience that lovers of hot and spicy food should really try. All of the dishes I tried were boldly spiced, and beautifully balanced with the flavours of the ingredients and other seasonings. If any members of your party want to avoid the heat and the tingly numbing effect of Szechuan peppercorns, it may be a challenge to find much on the menu that doesn't feature at least one of those elements.
The service was friendly and helpful, very ready to answer questions about menu items and their descriptions.
The decor is unchanged from the standard "this is a Chinese restaurant" red-and-gold trim with paper lanterns and dragon motifs left behind by the China Classic, which was the previous business in this space.
I can't wait to get a few of my more "heat-tolerant" friends together to head back and try more of the exciting-looking menu. -

Stick with the true szechuan dishes, otherwise the food is not good (ie: fried rice is really tasteless, but the Szechuan chicken is amazing!).
Service is horrendous but they are trying. I am sure they will get it eventually.
This should be 3 1/2 stars but you can't do that on Yelp. -

New favorite restaurant! We've had it almost weekly since it opened. Szechuan noodles and Chili Chicken are amazing, but everything we've had is great. The service was quite slow at first but they've come a long way. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

The food was good: tasty dumplings, delicious and spicy dry fried beef and kinda bland tofu and wood ears. I would definitely go back based on food alone.
The service was not good. We waited about 20 minutes for water, and just over an hour for the food. The one waitress, inexperienced and oblivious, eventually let us know that they were operating with one less chef than usual (who was in China -- not unexpectedly out sick, for example). And it wasn't particularly busy... there were 4 other tables taken when we arrived. Maybe let people know before they order that the wait could be very very long? During our wait, we saw 4 different parties come in, sit down, and leave without having ordered.
Maybe the service issue will improve, and it was just an evening where things were at their worst. -

This is a fairly new restaurant on Quinpool Road., it has moved into the spot where China Classic was.
It offers delivery on orders over $25.00. Lunch specials around $7.00 + ( the hours on Monday and Tuesday will not allow you to go for lunch , they do not open on those days until 4:00pm )
It will be interesting to see if they can hold a steady clientele, given they other place was Chinese food as well.
Chinese food is one of my favourites, it has always been, I can't wait to go sample the Szechwan again.
