Tsk Tsk Jerry.
I sent an email to "Jerry" explaining my needs. I mentioned a quote that H&R Block gave to me too. Jerry's quote was very competitive compared to H&R Block. However, for 8 years of returns at $50 a return I kept looking for quotes.
My taxes are simple. I have two T4 slips (sometimes three) per year, some dentist receipts and bus passes. I just want someone else to be the last to lay eyes on them and to check my work so I went looking. Jerry's ad on craigslist mentioned:
"Please email us with your situation in detail and your contact information, we will contact you within an hour. Please note our rates are very competetive and will work within your budget if possible or call Jerry at 604-273-7789"
When I read that I felt it was very inviting as I have many other financial obligations to catch up with, as I also mentioned in my detailed email. I thought he might take this into consideration and charge a lump sum, say $200-$300.
I mentioned to him later that day in an email that a friend's dad is willing to look over my numbers for a nominal fee.

We are a well established accounting firm since 1996, registered with CRA as service provider. We are certified pro.
It is ridiculous you made such a deal with a "friend" in such a way. Just an alert, most probably this could get you into trouble with CRA.
