It was a snowy, blustery day last week, and I wandered inside after spotting some half-green, half-yellow crocks and teapots in the window, like ones that I grew up with (Dad's from Tunisia).

This place is marvelous!! It was like stumbling upon a faraway market in Africa. Mostly natural food products, organic items, too, reasonable prices, lots of variety, too: Not just Middle Eastern/Mediterranean products, but Indian spices and some Asian ingredients, too.

Lots of figs, dates, olives, olive oils, spices, cheeses, meats, bulk grains, juices, scented waters (rose, orange blossom), tahinis, and breads! I snagged some tandoor naan and Persian pebble bread, dirt cheap, hooray!

As one who usually sticks with the one-stop convenience of Stupidstore, I'm waking up more and more to all the crap that's in our food, especially meat.

Granted Stupidstore has responded to consumers and has a hormone/antibiotics free line of meat, nothing beats the quality of a local butcher.

I've bought different cuts of all-Halal chicken, beet, and lamb (my favourite) here and you definitely taste the difference. Juicer, more flavourful and most importantly 'real'. I hate the over-use of the word 'organic'. Organic is what what all food should be, like it was before all the chemicals and sh*t were added to the food chain.

Staff is always friendly and prices are reasonable. I haven't bought much of the wide variety of of packaged food, but they have a great selection.

Do your body a favour. If you live close, try their meat. You're paying a little bit more, but i'ts worth every penny. Unless you like putting that drug-fed chicken meat in your belly.

Jasmine Halal -- quite intimdating from the outside, even more intimidating when you walk thru the front door, but once you have mustered up the courage to make your way to the meat department in the back end of the store, you are now worthy. The last hurdle is asking the Butcher for what you need -- pretty much the same vibe as the front cashier, but totally worth it.  I love my boyz at Windsor, but when I need chicken wings, ground chicken and lamb, this is the place to go.  Excellent quality and great prices.

    * Middle Eastern foods, and a whole lot more! *

I've passed by this spot many times and never went inside.  What a mistake!  There is such a lovely selection of products here and they are really reasonably priced.

They have a nice selection of Persian breads similar to those you can find in North Vancouver's markets.  There is also a large selection of olives, feta, halal meats, bulk nuts, dried fruits, halva, turkish delight, etc., etc.

Some of the nice items I spotted today include:
    - fig jam
    - rose jam
    - mint water
    - rose water
    - dill water
    - fresh halva
    - huge variety of dates

And then some non-Middle Eastern selections too including:
    - reasonably priced fresh tortillas ($2.29 for 1.2 kg!!!)
    - bulk macademia nuts

And the find of the day:
    - a HUGE and reasonably priced selection of Garofalo pasta (my favourite dried pasta from Italy!)

I'm a big fan of this store and will definitely be returning often!

    Super friendly service.
The best feta cheese in town.
    Wonderful array of interesting ingredients.
I felt like I was at a family grocery store and that makes me a fan!

Jasmine Halal is practically a supermarket of Mediterranean foods: an excellent meat counter complements an extensive collection of Middle Eastern  breads; a truly amazing selection of frozen foods complements beautifully prepared foods like olive, pickles, sun-dried tomatoes in oil, as well as great sweets and spices.  Of particular note is their very good variety of honeys.

In addition, excellent kitchen wares, hookahs, and what-have-you.

If you're eating well, halal is always a good bet.  As with kosher, you're typically getting your meat from a small-market, closely regulated source.  It's almost a truism that Muslims have the best butchers.

I pick up a few regular items here like pitas, samosa's (only $1.35) but the real kicker here is the LAMB PRICES. Calling all lamb lovers, it does not get any better or any cheaper anywhere!. I pick up 4 large shanks for around $10. Try doing that anywhere else in the city! the best and I love the owner and staff. Something about supporting a nice local business and getting value doing it just makes me feel good

There aren't many places to get Mediterrean/Middle Eastern specialties in Vancouver, otherwise I'd have scored this place lower.

Is it just me, or has this place gotten dodgier over the years? I used to go here and I remember it being better. I still go, but I'm more careful about what I purchase, as the hygiene standards seem to have dropped. I bought samosas in the summer and ended up with a large bluebottle fly in my bag, which is not surprising, as they were buzzing around the meat area, as it was essentially open to the outdoors on a hot day with the back door open. I buy dates and figs and canned goods and sometimes packaged goods here, but I'm a bit afraid of that meat counter, esp. with Windsor just across the street.
