Review from Denise S.
Hidden on the 2nd floor of the Colonade Building on Bloor (across from Winners), the JFT is an oasis of calm in the city.
There are 2 parts:
- Library - loads of books, magazines, newspapers, AV materials in English and Japanese around topics of Japanese language/arts/culture. Library cards are free. The librarians are mostly bilingual and very helpful and courteous. There is internet access as well as TV viewing stations for watching DVDs. A great places to spend an afternoon. Also, a wealth of resources for those planning trips to Japan, looking for work in Japan, looking to learn Japanese, etc.
- Gallery space - this area hosts rotating exhibits. Currently, they have a photography show that is presented as part of CONTACT. Past exhibits have involved origami, paintings, drawings, woodcuts, ceramics, textiles, you name it. They also host book launches, film screenings, lectures, and other events. And it's all FREE! You can sign up for their mailing list and they will keep you in the loop.
NB: Hours are a bit limited (only open late on Thursdays) for those working 9-5. However, they are open on the 1st Saturday of the month.Listed in: Art Matters
