    O wowwwww....
The Japanese have now perfected the classic American hotdog. Using grade A sausages, japadogs have transformed the ordinary hotdog into an art piece decked with Japanese condiments like daikon oroshi, japanese mayo, green onions, ume, and shiso. They serve fun flavors like okonomiyaki style and takoyaki style hotdogs! Wowwww ..,

I did it. I tried Japa Dog.

There were nine flavours to choose from and I chose the Okonomi flavour because it contained bonito flakes. Bonito is a type of tuna fish. I like fish. The bonito fish smelled and tasted somewhat fishy, but it's also a sign that it's made of real fish. The flakes had a melt in your mouth texture.  Interestingly, the flakes looked like wood chippings to me.  I wish they added some lemon, garlic, or ginger to mask the fishy taste.

The sausage itself is made of Kurobuta pork which is really a somewhat less common type of pig from the Berkshire breed. The Kurobuta pork was tasty, but it was also fatty. I'm not used to eating sausages with visible pieces of mushed up chunks of fat. On another note, the pork sausage itself tasted like something from the Chinese butcher shop, so it didn't taste too Japanese to me.

The special Japanese sauce looked like some sort of thick brown soy sauce and it tasted a little sweet and savoury. It taste good, but it wasn't like, "man, I'm addicted to this stuff good" To be honest, the Japanese mayo, well, there wasn't enough. I like to add a lot of condiments on a hot dog, and it would be cool if there was an option to add your own mayo or special Japanese sauce.

The bun was super soft, slightly toasted and crispy on the outside. I really liked it. It was the best tasting hot dog bun I've ever tasted.

At the end, I just felt that the Japa Dog was a little too small and priced a little too high, but the overall quality is better than your Ikea or Costco hot dog.

Pretty decent dogs. I try to look up places to go or avoid on a trip. Trusting fellow yelpers, we hit Japa dog for lunch one day. I rate a hot dog based on whether it gives me shivers. Shivers are bad and it is the result of a greasy dog. This one did not receive the dreaded shiver award and I was so happy. I got grilled onions and then added fresh onions to it.

This is definitely a go-to food cart while in Vancouver.

I start off and this is how it went down:

    "Hey, let's go to Japadog"

"What is it?  Is it that Japanese place that makes hotdogs Japanese style?"

    "Yup"

"Are you kidding me?  $7 for a friggin hotdog????"

"Yeah, but it's done differently, and will taste different.....  You only live once and $7 won't kill you!"

"Hell,....... it's still JUST a friggin HOT DOG"

"Doooooode.......how much did you pay for the Sweden versus Slovakia olympic hockey tix?  $600, and as you put it, a once in a life time event?  SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS DUDE!!!!!!!  For a friggin hockey game......and it was crappy too!"

Needless to say, I won the exchange, and we're coming back to Japadog.

BEST hot dog ever! I would come back to Vancouver just to eat this. We were planning to head back to Seattle and saw the Japa Dog cart.
"Should we go? I'm still full from the last two meals we just ate."
    "Let's do it!"

Best decision ever! I don't know how they do it, but they load the hotdogs with crack or something. Flavorful and good without the excessive greasiness like Pink's in LA has, where you feel like you wanna die from a heart attack after eating the hotdog. No, Japa Dog makes it, do I dare say, "gourmet' and is loaded with delicious flavors and tasty toppings without the heavy greasiness that makes you feel guilty for eating it. The sauces are amazing!

#1 Kurobuta Terimayo: my favorite out of the 2 i tried. pork dog with special mayo & teriyaki sauce. simply goodness topped with seaweed. must try!
#2 Okonomi: pork dog with cabbage, bonito flakes, mayo and special sauce. delicious as well!

Just so you know, Ice Cube has been here 10 times (at least).

Or at least that's what the sign proclaims, along with Anthony Bourdain. Now, I will follow his tastebuds to the ends of the earth (or at least to the bottom of my wallet, we're not all on Travel Channel budgets here).

My friend and I are here for a week,  so this morning we figure'd we'd give it a shot.

Well, it opens at noon, there was a line formed by 1145. Freal.

Naturally, we started taking pictures and grouped with the loyal japadog followers and checked out the menu. Now, my homegirl is Japanese, lives in Japan for most of the year, and has lived in the heart of Tokyo for the past two years. She's never heard of Japadog. Ok.

So we both got the number one, I smothered mine in chilli sauce, she threw some wasabi sauce on hers.

    HOLY CRAP.

I grew up a block away from a Casper's dog, and this blows that out of the water.

Best. Hotdog. Ever. Hands effing down.

The dog was juicy and blowing up with flavor, the sauces all worked together perfectly, and there's freaking seaweed on it! This is amazing!

I'm coming back soon to try the salmon dog. Hell yes.

ok, there's like too much hype for this.   It's a good dog, and the toppings are different.   Life changing, it is not.   Maybe my expectations were too high based on peoples previous reviews, but I tried to keep an open mind.    This was probably one of the few "must do's" on my last visit.   I ran out of local currency the last time I was in the area.   I made a lunch stop here and tried the Katsudog lunch combo.   Maybe I picked the wrong one, but it was just OK.   I wish they served their dogs with some Tots, or some starchy goodness.   Oh, some of those octopus due balls would be awesome on the side, like 2 or 3.   Yeah.. it was a meh for me.   I would try again, but only if I didn't have another thing in the area that was peaking my interest.

Had to try it because of the hype!!!

    Ordered the Kurobuta Terimayo dog.

Verdict:  Good but could make this at home!!!  The mayo does become a little overwhelming at times.  I think i prefer the good ol' ketchup and mustard kind of dog.

Kinda pricey for a hot dog too.....definitely can't compare it to the price of a COSTCO HOT DOG, BABY!!

I found 3 different japadog vendors within a 3 block radius.  Send one down to LA!

    Gotta love their Jinglish:

    - They call their hotdog stand a "restaurant hotdog stand."
    - On their website (yes, a hotdog stand that has a website!), "Our English is very poor. The followings may make mistakes. We are sorry.  We will do my best for supplying most delicious hotdog in the world."

So they are finally expanding with their second location here in front of the Scotiabank near the Burrard Skytrain station.  The original location (
http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) isn't far away, but this will definitely grab more of the commuter traffic and finance types.

In typical Japanese management fashion they have created a hierarchy of specialized skills to work at the stand.  Bet you didn't know there were 2 specialized job positions to run a hotdog stand, eh?

Job #1:  Food counter attendant.  Required skills:  Oral communication, Significant use of memory, Finding information, Continuous learning, Lifting up to 10KG.

Job #2:  Food beverage server.  Required skills:  Oral communication, Significant use of memory, Finding information, Continuous learning, Lifting up to 20KG.  Must also have food and beverage serving skills:  present bills to customers and accept payment, describe menu items, and give advice on menu selections.

Mind you, this is a hotdog stand!!!!!  But now I understand why 1 person (the food beverage server) is the only one that talks to the customers.  Apparently they have the skills to do it.  Perhaps it goes with being able to lift 20KG instead of 10KG!

My favourite is the miso-mayo dog.  It is a turkey hotdog drizzled with a miso-sesame sauce and a little bit of Japanese mayo.  Then you get a generous covering of kaiware (radish sprouts).  Very addictive.

They have a new flavour, but it wasn't available:  Okonomi.  It is an okonomiyaki flavoured hotdog featuring all-natural Kurobuta pork.  I look forward to trying that on a future visit!

I wonder how long until they have spread out all over the city and the world?  Are they the Beard Papa of hotdogs?!?!?!?!  You just never know!  As they expand they may even create a 3rd job description!

Hot diggity dog!  Best hot dog ever!  The Japanese are truly genius in adding in their own twist to an American staple.

I got the Kurobuta Terimayo dog which had Jap mayo, nori, and teriyaki sauce. The bun is toasted so it's warm and toasty, enveloping a dog made out of Kurobuta Pork.  Yes, pork.  Juicy, moist, and absolutely delicious.

There was no need to add in extra condiments.  No need for mustard, no need for ketchup.  It was perfect.  How am I ever going to eat a regular, boring American hot dog again?

Oh how I wish wish WISH with all my might that a Japa Dog stand will open in Toronto!

OH PLEASE JAPA DOG PLEASE move to Tdot! I'm begging you, please!

    Seriously.
    DO IT!

Street meat with a Japanese twist... can someone say brilliant? And oh so tasty! So happy I made it a point to follow through with the Japa Dog lunch I scheduled into my tight VanCity visit agenda.

    It was so worth it.

Japa condiments, japa toppings and japa flavours makes one perfect cheap eat cuisine available on the streets.

Trust me Japa Dog, you'll make a killing on the downtown streets of Toronto. I'll deserve a referral fee or a cut in your profits when you decide to do so!

I've had the fortune of running into a Japadog set up in downtown Vancouver right across the the Winking Judge. I'm usually pretty skeptical about food quality when it comes to lunch trucks and mobile establishments (in terms of taste and hygene, that is).

Japadog blew that out of the water.

Who would've thought anyone can revolutionize something so inviolably classic as an American hot dog?! Try the oroshi - it truely is a successful Japanese reinvention. The combination of green onion and bratwurst lend it that bold yet creamy and memorable flavor.

I welcome Japadog to the States with open arms.

Good - but not $6.75 good.

So I finally caved and tried Japa Dog.  While stumbling out a bar downtown and seeing there was no lineup, the moment was too perfect not to seize (especially since reports were that the lineups were up to an hour long during the Olympics).  Time to Bourdain it up!

Everything from the staff, 'Engrish' signage and ordering system was very Japanese and took me back.  I went with the 'chef recommend' kurobuta terimayo dog - Japanese mayo, teriyaki sauce and seaweed toppings over a kurobata (black hog) dog, which is hyped as the 'Kobe beef' of pork.  I wanted the 'Kobe beef' of... err ... Kobe beef but the the $9 Kobe dogs were sold out.

Paid my $6.75 (and another $0.25 as tip) and waited a few more minutes for my hot dog.  I managed about 4 paces before I gave in and sunk my teeth into it.  The star attraction is the 'crunch' of the hot dog skin and porky goodness and juice bursting into your mouth and then the savoury-ness of the teriyaki, mayo and seaweed flavours come in.  This is one damn good hot dog - the only thing I wasn't impressed with was the store-bought buns.  For almost $7, I would have expected everything to be special made.

All in all, at least 4/5 stars for flavour and quality alone.  But an extremely poor value for the price (I can easily spend $20 here before being sated and I would rather spend that money at Uncle Fatih's or a good donair joint).  Japa Dog is definitely over-hyped and not worth the crazy lineups and I can understand the polarizing love/hate Yelpers have with this place.  I will probably be back for another fix as it's pretty good - when there's no lineup and I have money burning in my pocket.

Okay Japadog, you're making it really REALLY difficult (notice choice of words) for me to refrain from inappropriate jokes since you are a vendor of weiners - seriously!!!!!

    *deep breath*

In Vancouver, you're the most beloved weiner of all time, how could I have not tried one of you with lots of your famous wasabi mayo slathered all over you?

I finally did and it was the perfect moment: the wind was blowing through my hair, your sauce caught a glimpse of the sun and twinkled like a streaming river on a summers day, I cupped your warm buns in my hands and stared at the steam rising from your weiner with drool dripping down my chin.

Out of respect, I wanted to eat you in the car with the windows down, all alone and in complete silence but out of temptation, I had to try a bite on the walk back.

*eyes roll back and feeling of faint approaching*

I opened my eyes and saw a bright light. I squinted and whispered, 'God is that you?' Indeed it was a god. It was Bob Marley singing 'Could this be love'.

Good, interesting hot dog creations, but high prices (for hot dogs).

Would give a 4 on food quality/novelty alone, but knocked it down to 3, given that the price was like 6.50 and if I had been hungry, I would have had to order 2. Not such a cheap lunch at that point.

Definitely worth a visit though. I had the kimchi-black sesame, which was unique and tasty. Went with a large group, so among us we had pretty much everything on the menu, and all was good.

(Pro Tip: Do not accompany the kimchi/sesame dog with a carbonated beverage, or you will be visited by kimchi-flavored burps for the rest of the afternoon. Sub-optimal, to say the least.)

Ok. I had to try this Japadog. I heard rave reviews from friends. I thought to myself, "self," this is going to be soooo good. So, off I went with a friend one night to try this wildly exotic dog.

When I got there, the line up was slow and long. This has got to be good. Look at all the people here.

Hmmmmm what were people ordering? What looks good? Should I try the safe looking dog or experiment? Ah, new food . . . let's experiment. I ordered the dog with shaved turnip and "special" sauce. I can't remember the name (my therapist tells me to let it go.  Don't hold onto the pain).

After waiting in the ordering line, I sidled over to the pick up line. Another ten minutes and I'll have my Asian treat. Ahh, finally, I have the turnip mound in my hand (with seaweed and special sauce . . . oh and there was some meat under there somewhere).

I bit into it . . . I didn't know what to think right away . . . later when I went home, I thought to myself, it started out really nicely. Interesting flavours that I'd not experienced before. Then I wondered if I really liked what I'd eaten. Yes,  it was good and interesting at the same time . . . then it got a little weird, kind of like most of my relationships, as the flavours mixed.

All in all, I'm not sure what the craze is about. To be totally honest, I wasn't very impressed. Although, I only tried one dog. The others might be fine, but I'm definitely not a fan. Sorry japamaniacs. Did I mention the long line ups? That's 30 minutes I'll never get back.

When it comes to street meat Japa dog has got to take the cake. With all of their asian inspired condiments and toppings it's hard not to love them. I got to try every dog on the list as I went here with 8 people. Loved everyone except the one with the fish leaves on it... a little fishy, actually a lot fishy. Besides that everything was great.

Overall, the best street meat. It's also famous the world over so come to Vancouver and give them a try. Cheap as hell too!

I had my first Japa Dog experience about a year ago from the stand outside Sutton Place.  It was OK and I gave it a 3-star rating.  A year later, I thought I would give it another try but from another stand - this one on Burrard & Pender closer to home.

I had Bratwurst Terimayo.  Although the bun was nicely toasted on the grilled, the sausage was just luke warm even it had just come off the grill and it was not all that juicy either.  I also noticed that the mayo bottle was not surrounded by ice or in some sort of cooler.  Hmmmm ... I'm not sure if I would like to consume dairy products not refrigerated prior to be served.

I hadn't been to JapaDog in a while, but on hearing that they had a new dog with the taste of okonomiyaki (one of my very favourite Japanese foods), I knew I had to try it.

I don't know if they've updated their menu since my last visit (to the original location), or if the new location just has a slightly different menu. Either way, I saw several new and interesting choices. Still, I was there for the okonomi dog.

It really was reminiscent of okonomiyaki, and I devoured it happily. But with this new delicious item on the menu, it's going to take just that much longer to decide what I want next time I'm there!

So i finally had a chance to see what all the hype was about. My first encounter with Japa dog was on television watching no reservations with Anthony Bordain. Over time, I've seen it on many travel shows, so when I was researching places I wanted to check out when i was in Vancouver, obviously Japa dog was on the top dog on my list. Apparently, Japa dog is all over the city like it is in New York. It's a twist on the American version of the hot dog with Asian flavors. I cannot say it was the best hot dog I ever had but it was good. It was definitely unique because I've never had teriyaki sauce on a hot dog. In fact, most hot dogs I've had are not sweet at all.

This novel Japanese twist for the hot dog is worth trying and eating multiple times.  With a variety of types of meat and condiments, there is something special that makes each bite so scrumptious.  My favorite is the okonomi, which is a version of the Japanese pancake, okonomiyaki, with bonito flakes.  Others like the ones with cheese terimayo, kurokke with mashed potatoes and kurobuta with pork.

Surprisingly, the food tastes fresh and is served hot with an aroma that makes you crave for more.  There are a few stands on the corners during the day, but you should get there early before they run out of each type of Japadog.

Great signage: read all of it. Fun, friendly staff, although none of the ones I met spoke perfect English. They gave me the impression that the closing time was fuzzy.

The Terimayo has a great combination of flavours - the seaweed is a nice touch - but there's a lot of mayo, so I'd avoid it if you don't like it. The kimchee dog (currently only available at this location?) is great, with a bit of mayo mixed in to the mild kimchee.

I feel as if many Torontonians look down upon the humble hot dog (or street meat if you will) as beneath them. However, I am very proud of the Toronto street meat and convinced there is absolutely nothing better than a fully loaded (choosing from a massive array of toppings) $2.50 sausage. Previous to my trip, I had heard a great deal about Japa Dog and was quite excited to try one.

The actual stand looked nice and clean. I had my heart set on trying the one with mashed potatoes, but unfortunately, due to the upcoming olympics the city has tightened regulation on food sold by vendors. The lady explained that they couldn't serve the mashed potato one (as well as another) but are hoping to sort it out with the city soon. My second choice was the spicy cheese terimayo. I must admit I was quite shocked when it was ready - this thing was huge! and absolutely covered in cheese and mayo.

I can't lie, the thing was absolutely delicious. However, I would have easily been satisfied with half of one - I found the mayo especially rich.  The seaweed on top was a very nice touch as well.

This is something to definitely try once if you are in the area, however I don't think I would recommend eating these regularly... especially since at $6 they make a relatively expensive snack.

And while tasty, I would still much rather have street meat!

I am surprised that street vendors in Vancouver charge more than restaurants.  This has an unusual flavour that is better than the boring hot dogs you get with ketchup, mustard and relish (UGH).  It's good to try but the price is a bit pricey.  The flavours are interesting.  I like the flavoured Jap-fries they have too.  It's great to try.  There is no other place like it in Canada.

I'm late to the Japa Dog craze because I assumed that there wouldn't be any options for vegetarians. Boy, am I glad that I was wrong! I walked by one weekday evening this week and decided to give it a try. Obviously, I was quite pleased as I returned again the next day for lunch. Despite the line up, service was fast and really friendly both times. The veggie terimayo was delicious and really not too pricey considering how much a plain veggie dog will run you at  any other hot dog stand around town. Bring cash.

I wanted to be able to write a great review but since I wasn't able to place an order I couldn't try one of the famous Japadogs. Waited for 5 minutes for the two guys to start taking orders and since they were too busy talking to each other my wife and I decided to pass. There were just a few customers there, and as far as I could tell, nobody was being helped.

i think it was fate that i found this japadog spinoff cart just footsteps away from my hotel! although i was curious to try the korokke (potato croquette flavored) or okura (okra) dogs, the bf and i ended up ordering the cheese terimayo, with a spicy jalapeno and cheese sausage with terimayo and seaweed, and the okonomi, with mayo, bonito flakes, and okonomiyaki sauce. the novelty and the taste were just top notch, and i am *so* going to make sure i have these condiments available for my next barbecue!

the cart also offers normal hot dogs and a variety of japanese drinks, like ramune, calpis, oolong tea and canned coffee... yum!

I paid another visit to Japadog and I shelled out for an Okomi WITH the kurobuta. It was a wise investment in delciousity. However, I have a new JapaDog tip to share: don't wear tight pants. That much tender pork and okomi sauce goodness in a bun - not to mention the fried cabbage -  needs room to digest.

Folks, before you insult this hot dog stand- let me remind you something. IT IS A HOT DOG STAND! Accepting this fact, let's review what I ate, okay? Would I order a boring regular dog there? Nope, the only thing to get is Kurobuta Teri-Mayo. Kurobuta for those of you don't know, is a very fancy pork from black pigs (yes they are actually black in color), sort of a Kobe beef equivalent of pork products. Having Japanese mayo (Qewpie Mayo is the brand), teriyaki sauce and tons of sea weed dumped on it? Again, let me remind you- it's a hot dog. Can you fork over $6.75 for it? Can you fork over $$$ for a Kobe beef hamburger? I can and I do. Loved my experience all around.

I popped my Japadog cherry today! After standing in line for 30 plus minutes under the heat I finally made it to the front. The Hubby ordered the Terimayo - seaweed and teriyaki sauce and onion dog and I got A dog with fried cabbage and bonito flakes - Okonomi. I found the hubby's dog hard to put down - I tried to distract him with a soda as my sample bite grew larger. My dog had a nice sweet but saltiness to it. All in all I will be back to check more of the menu. I like it's originality and hype at the same time. Just wish I could bring some back home with me and it didn't cost so much for a hot dog!

I love love love Japa Dog.  I tried a Japa Dog for the first time this weekend and had the #1 - the Kurobota Terimayo.  It was soooo good.  It is a little pricey at $7.25 but I believe you get really good quality ingredients (such as Kurobota pork) in your hot dog and it's a unique dish. They definitely need to expand to the US. I saw that some copycats recently opened up a stand in Seattle and I will definitely check it out to compare but I can't imagine it could compare. This place must be so successful that others are starting to emulate them.  Japa Dog will definitely receive a regular visit from me every time I visit Vancouver.

This is a review of the stand not the restaurant.  Although they are one in the same (in so far as taste), don't get them confused on location.  Let me first say that I don't really like hot dogs, but a friend said that I have to try one.  So, I went by the stand and ordered the Terimayo.  I will give it to them that they give you additional flavors and a large amount of additional condiments to add to your cooked schnauzer, but if you don't like hot dogs, this is not going to make you like them.  I would normally give a hot dog only 1 star, so I'm giving this 3 stars because of their innovation and creativity.  If you are inclined to eat a hot dog, have a Japadog.

I'm gonna leave a review on this Japa Dog because this is where I first had it.  The dog's here are just phenominal.  I had the Terimayo and the Misomayo Brats.  One word: WOW.  I love the way the Japanese flavors go so well with the brat.  It seems odd at first, but the flavors all work so well together.  As Japa Dog gets more and more popular, the lines seem to get longer and longer.  But for sure, worth every minute!!!  You may have to walk around the block a few times to find these guys, as they aren't always on the same corner... but they try.

Watch out for the Okura - it tastes like phlegm.  This stand pales in comparison to the one up the street which is high energy and always bustling.  When I went, there was only one server and she did not look to happy to be working there.

OMG - one of my favorite things I ate on vacation here.  I wasn't expecting too much from this street vendor because I didn't care much for Dogzilla (a Japanese hot dog truck in California), but this was wayyyyyy better!  Though it's pricey (I think we spent about $15 for two hot dogs), it was so worth it.  I got the Kurobuta Terimayo, which was freaking delicious.  The hot dog wasn't really a hot dog but a pork dog (similar to Kielbasa but really juicy) covered in teriyaki, mayo, and seaweed.  I have no idea how this combo could taste so good, but it did.  My friend got the Spicy Cheese Terimayo, which was also good (had a bit of a kick to it along with cheese chunks embedded inside the hot dog!) but mine was definitely the better of the two.  We were even thinking of going to another Japa Dog location, since different locations have a few unique items to them, but in the end, we were just too full.  There was also a small crowd of people, though we didn't have to wait too long for our food.  Sighhhh - one of the things I'll definitely miss....
