This is a really weird restaurant, but the food was good. Like the others described its pub food, indian and breakfast/lunch.

First time  I was there, I ordered food from here for a work potluck and it was surprisingly good. A co-worker suggested it and told us to order the butter chicken. The menu was massive and it was the strangest assortment of food, but everything was delicious and gone before we knew it.

The second time, we had a sit down dinner. The decor of this place is as random as the menu. It looks like an old school italian restaurant. There were grapevines and decorative bottles of oil everywhere. Again the food was great and the portion were huge. We ordered a few appetizers (meatballs, falefals). We though that we would be splitting them to share but there like 8 of each on the plate.

I would definitely recommend the food here.

I came here thinking it was breakfast diner food.  I walked in, then walked out because I was sure that I stepped into the wrong restaurant.  James Street Cafe Bar and Grill is actually an Indian restaurant that also serves Western Styled lunch/ brunch.  They have a MASSIVE menu and it's really difficult to figure out what it is that you would like to eat.  Many of the pictures of the meals are not actually described in the menu itself, which makes it all the more confusing.  However... confusion aside, I would give this place a solid 4 stars based on the food itself.

After humming and ha-ing, I ordered the Halibut Masala and my boyfriend ordered some dish with grilled beef, chicken, and Choma(?).  I don't think this is the same type of Indian food that I'm used to.  It's a bit sweeter and tangier and less cream.  Masala potatoes and I had basmati rice and daal with my dish.  I don't even know what was on my boyfriends dish because it was massive and was too busy eating my own food to engage in a conversation about his.  Both of our dishes could have fed two people, easily.

The masala was savory and tangy at the same time - the halibut was just a bit dry.  My boyfriends grilled beef was made to perfection - it was medium well but still had just the right amount of char.

We also ordered these grilled meatballs.  There were six of them, all the size of baseballs.  They were glorious.  You wouldn't believe it but this dish was only $6.95.

We were glad to see that they do take out, and while their take out menu is limited.  You couldn't possibly fit everything that they offer into one form.  If you do order for two, one dish and an appy really is enough.  They have daily specials and often have coupons in the local community newspaper.  If you live in the area or are in the area, I would definitely check this place out.

Went here for lunch on a tuesday... the place was fairly empty but I'm trying to check out more places in my area.  The overall experience left us feeling...  confused.

The menu was a combination of pub-style food, indian restaurant, and denny's (all day breakfast).

During our lunch we were serenaded by Kenny G's greatest hits.  I'm not a fan, so even 1 song was too much.  After the 5th it was getting silly.  It was like stuck being on hold trying to get technical service...  "all our lines are currently busy...  please remain on the line and your food will be delivered in the order it was requested"

Looking above us there was a disco ball and a bunch of spotlights.  Does a spontaneous square dance break out betwen courses?  I guess maybe the room is used for events sometimes, but it was really odd having it right in the middle of the large dining room.

The one thing I have to make clear is the tandori chicken I had was really tasty.  Which makes me confused since with everything else - I almost expected it to be bad.  My friend's salad wasn't great though, as it was the lowest-quality bagged salad with iceberg lettuce (at least spend the extra quarter and buy the decent bagged salad!)

Unfortunately the lunch entree prices were not lunch-friendly.  My chicken was $14.xx and most of the lunch entrees were $11-15.  Not very cafe-pricing...

I was even more confused leaving, that when paying for our meal at the "cashier" they didn't seem to have a cash register... instead the server was giving us change back from what looked like her own change purse???  Hmmmm.....

The issues I'm mentioning are all fixable...  unfortunately I think that if they don't get some of these dealt with they might not be around for too long.

Came here for lunch and ended up ordering eggs benny....the menu is mostly curries and I wasn't in the mood for Indian that day. (Actually, I had no idea the place was mostly indian cuisine.)

The benny was ok...the kind where the egg is fried rather than poached. Nice potatoes, though.

If I knew I was going to order a benny, I would have just gone to their location on Boundary near Joyce where they have more benny options available (and they're cheaper, too).
