As far as I can tell, this play is decent but nothing special. The only reason I'm giving it 3 over 2 stars is because I had some awesome service.
The sushi and sashimi are all quite good, but considering all the other options in Vancouver, I can't find any reason why I'd go out of my way to come here. -
Review from Taylor K.
I used to go to Jako when I first moved to Yaletown. They have sushi specials which are pretty good deal considering they are located in downtown. But now with abundance of Japanese restaurants in the area and since I discovered Sakana, I have stopped going to Jako.
But last week, my sister was looking for a place to eat near her house and she wanted to try Jako. It was busier than it used to be hugely due to the fact that it was lunch time.
I ordered a miso soup and the a spicy roll combo. Maybe my palate has changed since I used to eat there but the food just seemed subpar. I can't remember it being ever great in the past but back then, I think we just ate sushi without eating at a really good sushi place. I guess my standard has been raised since I used to go to Jako.
Even the service didn't my seem as good. It was the same owners but they weren't as friendly as they used to be.
One of reasons I used to go there was because they offered good service and actually smiled when they greeted you.
Back to the food, like I mentioned above I ordered spicy roll combo. I hate it when the rice starts to fall apart and this is what exactly happened. As soon as I picked up one of the nigiri sushi, the rice broke in half.
And the rolls itself, there were way too much rice in ratio to the fish.
In the case of Jako, the quantity may be there but there is no quality.
Bottom line, if you are on a tight budget and need to fill your tummy with food, this may be the place for you.
But if you are actually wanting good Japanese food, I would suggest going to someplace else. I am not promoting any other place but look up on yelp and see what else is out there.
I am quite surprised this place got 4 and half stars overall. -

Now THIS is what I'm talking about. A creative menu, quality sushi, and reasonable prices. Between the three of us, we had a a spicy tuna sashimi plate, three kinds of salmon maki, a "Jako roll" (I don't know what was in it besides imitation crab, but each piece was on a crust of deep-fried rice), a fried ginger calamari plate, and three clam miso soups (exactly what it sounds like - a bowl of soup with steamed clams in it), all for $15 per person incl tax and tip. The menu was extensive... I'm looking forward to trying out their other sushi creations next time.
My only complaint is that the men's bathroom could use some renovation.Listed in: Davie Street's Eats

Look at their window plastered with specials and picture menus.
Wonder at their 20+pc sushi for under $10.
This isn't the place to debate the "quality" and sushi chef talents.
This is the place in Yaletown to get your sushi fix cheap and fill up your belly. Hungry to Nice-and-full in 60 seconds (Well, really fast service, anyway). -

I tend to worry a little when I go to a new sushi place, because I have to admit I'm a bit of a sushi addict walking the fine line between cheap and quality sushi.
So as I went along Davie St, Yaletown-side, I peered into Jako and saw that it was quite busy. Ok, $6.50 for a quick sushi lunch sounds fairly attractive to me.
I ordered the salmon and yam sushi combo that came with miso soup. The sushi bordered average to above average, I do really like the yam ones though. Their wasabi had a good kick to it, good. And it was filling all right, I love being full of sushi :)
The next time I'll try their sashimi and bump them up if that's fresh and well portioned. Overall a solid 3.5 stars. -
Review from Linzi M.
Coming from London, sushi is not expensive but certainly is not cheap. A maki roll with six pieces would set you back about £4. Here you can get a 22 piece selection for $6. Wow, I thought. That is almost too good to be true. That's because it is.
If you're going to eat raw fish, make it good raw fish and at Jako, this was not. Plus the miso soup was grainy and awful. The sushi arrived so fast, it was obviously all pre-made, probably ages in advance.
Sometimes cheap is just not worth it. -

When I lived in Yaletown and was new to Vancouver and it's vast array of sushi offerings, a friend at the time introduced me to Jako with the promise of cheap, filling, yummy sushi and the most amazing spicy sauce on the planet.
She insisted that I try the spicy salmon sashimi.........and needless to say, my affair with the spicy sauce that lovingly coated that salmon began.
The Salmon terriyaki rice bowl followed....a MASSIVE bowl heaping full of rice, some veggies and a generous portion of Salmon in sauce, all piled together nicely. Everyone I know in fact loves to rave about their Terriyaki rice bowls!
To round out, we ordered the yam tempura rolls.....easily the best yam rolls in the city. No muss, no fuss, no fancy plating with mushrooms....these rolls were pure delicious perfectly cooked pieces of yam tempura hugged tight by rice and nori.
I have tried a bunch of other things on the menu, all of which are good and honestly can say, in the 20 or 30 something times since my first encounter with Jako, I have never had a bad meal.
The owners are a wonderfully friendly couple who always remember myself and my friends as well as our favorites. Now that I have become a vegetarian, I no longer order the salmon, but the spicy sauce still goes on everything! Delish! -

Oh Jako. My Sushi Mecca. Other sushi just pales in comparison to the love I feel in my tummy after eating at Jako sushi.
Fresh, friendly, fast... frickin' fantastic! If it didn't seem obsessive or unnatural I would write Jako a sonnet :)
Vegetarian gyoza is the best I've had... ever. Vege teriyaki rice bowl is the best I've had... ever. Their sushi rolls are always as fresh as it gets and so tasty. So darn tasty.
They're also open ridiculously late on weekends, so skip Fritz (all that grease and booze in your belly CAN'T be a good thing) and grab yourself something less guilt-laden. -

Warning: ***** Do not read to the end if you like happy endings. *****
Today was a budget sushi lunch kind of day. I longingly walked towards Yamato, my standby for budget sushi. The only problem with Yamato is that the space is just way too small, and by the time I got there today it was way too full to grab a quite bite.
Reluctantly I went a few doors down to Jako. I will never make that mistake again! There is a reason Yamato has big crowds and Jako had only 3 tables taken. The nigiri had rice that fell apart upon being lifted. The fish was sliced sloppily. The tuna had also not been defrosted correctly and was mushy. Ugh.
The miso soup had almost nothing in it except for some scraps, and I mean SCRAPS, of tofu that was as if someone had cleaned off a cutting board where they had cut tofu and just dropped the crumbs into the soup. Double ugh!
Then the kicker - as I was getting to my salmon nigiri (which looked fresh) I noticed something little and black. I picked it up for further inspection. Crawly critter. I called over the waitress and she took away the box for inspection by her, another waiter and the sushi "chef." (Term used loosely)
She came back and pronounced that it had been a black sesame seed. Come on. With legs? Hello? They gave me two new pieces of salmon nigiri. As I was sitting there with a dumbfounded look on my face, a fly came over and landed on it. Ok. Enough. Never again! -

Yep the best spicy tuna cone I have ever eaten was in this place. Tuna sashimi so good, EVERYTHING I ATE HERE WAS AMAZING. I suggest.

I had a scale problem here. The sushi boat that I ordered was too huge to be consumed.
This is a good problem to have.
They also threw down a seriously awesome Katsudon.
A bit of a strange location with a bunch of retarded drunks outside at all times, but you're inside. No problem.
A cool thing to mention is that, apparently, a lot of the asian restauraunts all have the same desserts from this local gelato maker that makes everything in the shape of fruits. Naturally /some/ people can't finish their meal, but still want dessert. I think you know who I'm talking about. -

I went here for lunch the other day after not having been for probably close to six months. Everything is still the same (and delicious) and the same friendly staff work there, and even remembered me. This is a great little place to get a cheap sushi fix.

Ordered spicy tuna sashimi and received a sloppy plate with oxidized tuna with sweet chili sauce and disgusting thick layer of mayonnaise squirted across horizontally. I was very disgusted and loss my appetite. The side order of rice tasted like cardboard. This place is certainly not fresh to order!!!

Went here late one night with an unfulfilled desire for Nuba's falafels. Unfortunately, Nuba was closed and so we ventured here to satiate our appetites. It was definitely a distant second, and accordingly, this place has received the non-committal three-star rating (yes, I cribbed that term from Cameron M.). The food was good but not spectacular and doesn't stand out amongst the hundreds of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver.
The bento boxes give the best value, particularly late at night after all your money was most likely spent at the bar. They offer standard fusion-type sushi, like California rolls and BC rolls... sometimes adding their own personalized take on it by way of extra sesame seeds or generous sprinklings of imitation crabs that will undoubtedly result in an ungraceful overstuffed mouthful.
The kimchi flavoured nabe was quite good, with lots of vegetable matter, tofu and thin vermicelli noodles to help soak up the alcohol in your system. The tempura was a bit wanting as the vegetable version consisted only of potatoes and yams while the regular version had an extra prawn thrown in. More variation would have been appreciated. -

I usually order chicken teriyaki box to go on weekends when I am lazy to cook. The chicken is very succulent. If you ask me, the best part of the box would be the tempura. Haven't tried other things on the menu yet.

I had a pleasant lunch here yesterday but it must've been the company I had. Everything else was just ok. The sashimi came too fast, and by too fast I mean it was there in front of me by the time i looked away from the waiter. A second maybe? Weird. The rolls were ok but nothing to write home about. It was cheap. I probably won't go back.
