"So much fun and frolic during Winterlude"

The low ranking and lack of reviews confirms my belief. Ottawa does not know about the Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques-Cartier Park. I almost don't want to promote it too much, because I think if more people knew about this wonderful event, the lines at all the attractions would be too long.

My experience with my family of 5 has been nothing but the best. Think of it as the biggest snow playground on the continent during Winterlude. Here you will find a plethora of fun filled activities inspired by the Canadian winter and Northern traditions.

This is strictly for children, the young at heart and those wearing snowpants. Here you will find tube slides down snow hills, fun and fast ice-slides, snow sculptures, ice-fishing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, craft lessons and more.

I cannot say enough about the wide array of snow slide - they are so much fun! Believe it or not, my experience has been little to no waiting time. This is the hidden jem of Winterlude.

I am proud to say that all of my children caught their first fish ice-fishing. I can't recommend it enough. I think they filled a giant bowl with fish under the ice, cause every time the kids cast a Iine, they pulled out a fish. SERIOUSLY. Their fishing expectations have been seriously stunted.

Jacques-Cartier Park is located in the Hull sector of Gatineau. There are a lot of pathways, a marina, and a cycling centre that offers bike rentals. Because of the great view of the Ottawa River, the Rideau Falls, and Parliament Hill, the park is used as one of the major locations for events like the Tulip Festival and Winterlude, as well as Canada Day celebrations.

During Winterlude, the park turns into Snowflake Kingdom, a "winter wonderland" with games, workshops, shows, buskers, face painting, ice slides, snow sculptures, and other fun activities for children and families.

On Canada Day, the park is a great place to watch the fireworks, and see the reflections in the water. There is also a lot of live entertainment, activities, and demonstrations for people of all ages.

Jacques Cartier Park is one of the largest green spaces in the downtown Hull/Ottawa area.

The park stretches from the Alexandra Bridge and wraps around to Fournier Blvd, hugging the shore of the Ottawa River.  Between Alexandra Bridge and Highway 5 is where most of the public events are hosted at this park as this area is flat and open.  There are public washrooms in this area and ample space to toss around a football or Frisbee.  Winterlude and Canada Day celebrations are also held in this space.

From the Highway 5 bridge to Fournier Blvd. the park becomes more forested and the trails are a bit more hilly but not difficult to walk by any means.  My last visit to the park included a picnic where my friends and I watched a game of disc gold being played in this area of the park.  It was fascinated to watch the players try to avoid the tree trunks and branches.

The best part of this park is probably the river front walk from the Alexandra Bridge to the King Edward Bridge.  They've built a really nice boardwalk bridge which hangs over the river at some parts and provides awesome views of Parliament and the Ottawa skyline.

After dark I'd probably avoid this place but daytime it's a great walk or jog from Ottawa.
