Once in a great while you get a cappuccino that is so expertly crafted that there isn't a trace of bitterness, just pure, creamy, balanced perfection. This morning Giovanni (I believe that's his name) handed me just such a cappuccino...it didn't even need sugar! Made my morning!

Awesome cofffee, good bagels. Love the setting and is nice to mix it up from the 3-4 Starbucks which essentially have a perimeter around the place. The Jackson Place building is very cool unique, although most of the office space mainly looks empty presently.
Only pet peeve is the cashier handles the cash, then makes up your bagel, etc. You never know if some bum blew his nose with that dollar bill that she is handling.... and we all know how many bums there are in SF!!!! -

I like blue bottle, but they really screwed up my blue bottle latte. The coffee is burnt.

I love this place. Giovanni, Gabriella, and Gina always greet you with a smile and some seriously good "blue bottle" coffee. It's a great way to begin the day. And it's located in a lovely, peaceful, palm-fringed courtyard in the heart of old San Francisco.
This place is a treat and I heartily recommend you check it out! -

I really love this place.
I usually get their egg & pancetta with cheese bagel-combo along with a single latte whenever I'm around their zip code vicinity.
I always leave satisfied.

This is the perfect spot to feed my caffeine addiction! I love that they serve my favorite Blue Bottle Coffee:) Chai Tea latte's are also delish. A great switch up from all the Starbuck's in the surrounding area. The service is quick and the staff is polite. The only downside...CASH ONLY!! Please get a card machine - thanks in advance:)

My favorite cafe in San Francisco, bar none. I generally love the Jackson Square Historic District... although it's a fairly compressed area, it's its own miniature universe in the middle of San Francisco, with a lot of character and a distinct Southern European vibe. Even better, it's replete with little gems like Jackson Place Cafe... which, more than a cafe, is something closer to a modest shack tucked away in a jungle of brick law offices. You may walk past the alleyway entrance a couple of times but, once you find it, you'll be happy you tried. They have the terrace and part of the alleyway lined with little tables, so you can enjoy your Blue Bottle coffee sitting down. Overall, it's very quaint and very peaceful... and I find myself making all sorts of excuses to detour over there whenever I can.

I discovered this place through ScoutMob. I work about half a mile away and it's definitely not somewhere you'd stumble upon, since it's down an alley.
I ordered a panini which was delicious. I'm glad I had cash because they don't accept ATM/debit/credit cards. I liked that they had magazines available to read while you eat outdoors. Nice ambiance.
I would definitely go back if I was in the area. -

A tiny kiosk wedged between brick buildings in the heart of Jackson Square. I love the feel that this place gives off. I found this place when I was searching for a place that served Blue Bottle Coffee and I almost walked past this place.
I usually order a soy latte and occasionally a drip coffee. It is good coffee everytime I go, but nothing could beat the first drink I ever had at this nifty little place. My latte was whipped to perfection.
The ladies were nice. There is also a selection of food, such as bagels and sandwiches. I'll give these a try next time. : ) -

Gas lamps, a cobblestone alleyway, and a charming "Cafe" sign all remind me of a little street in Paris. That's exactly where you'll be at Jackson Place Cafe. Great sandwiches, Blue Bottle Coffee, cookies and pastries all await at this little gem of a place in the Financial District. To top off all this charm, the baristas are always playing great music and are totally accommodating if you find you're short on cash. I can't wait to go back!

Fantastic location!
I had a very yummy sandwich (turkey with gruyere I think). Blue bottle coffee is a plus. Very polite and friendly service even when we had to go get cash and come back. Also, as noted, fantastic location. If it were a tad bit less expensive, I would be here all the time. -

Imagine, if you will for a moment, walking down a bustling street as busy as it is noisy. Whirring buses, honking taxis and the grating sound of construction work jackhammers fill the air as dozens of important people sharply dressed in their business attire impatiently shuffle past each other on their way to wherever it is they need to be. Fifty-story cement buildings stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the tight grid known as San Francisco's Financial District.
Now imagine that while you're walking down one of these busy streets, you notice a narrow brick alleyway-- so unassuming that it's easy to miss. If you pay enough attention and happen to notice the passageway, perhaps you'll decide to wander through it to explore. As you amble through the dimly lit (but surprisingly clean) brick corridor, you'll notice that it leads to a red brick-enclosed courtyard, in the middle of which appears what seems to be a mirage.
It's a charming little brown kiosk with the word CAFE spelled out in large Parisian, Moulin-Rouge-esque lights. Welcome to Jackson Place Cafe, arguably the most easily-missed coffee shop in the city. It's a pocket of magic and quiet secretly tucked away in the middle of a busy city. The courtyard is lined with little offices and a lovely beauty shop, but the centerpiece of the little plaza is the Jackson Place Cafe.
The menu, hand-written in chalk of course, offers the usual fare: coffee, tea, bagels, panini, and pastries. I ordered a soy chai latte for $3 flat. Unfortunately, there was no option to pick sizes. I was a bit disappointed that it was so small. The latte was lukewarm, fluffy, and pleasant enough but nothing outstanding.
They had about seven or eight metal tables and plenty of chairs. I easily found a seat this afternoon because there were only a few other patrons. Jackson Place seems to attract busy office people seeking a quiet haven for their coffee breaks. I pulled out a book and sat only long enough to finish my latte.
Price Range: Around $3 for coffee; bagels ($2.50-$6.50), panini (about $7)
Coffee: I ordered a soy chai latte, which was light and very foamy. It wasn't unpleasant, but I was hoping for a little something better tasting (and bigger).
Prices: It was $3 for my drink. Typical San Francisco cafe price. I just wished they had bigger cup sizes.
Ambiance: Needless to say, the charming location and setting of Jackson Place can help make up for most, if not all, of its other shortcomings in price and taste. They even lined the courtyard with gas-lit orbs so you can pretend you're in a Dickens novel.
Reading Comfort: As an outdoor venue, it has plenty of natural lighting but you're at the mercy of the elements and whether the sun decides to come out (which is quite unpredictable in San Francisco). The seats are metal. Obviously not the most comfortable for long-term reading, but comfy enough for a quick coffee break or a chat with a friend.
Rush Factor: Due to the time of day I went (around 2 p.m. in the middle of the week), there weren't a lot of other patrons. I could've probably stayed for over an hour without buying anything else, if I wanted.
Verdict: Cute place to visit for the secret garden ambience; mediocre coffee and limited reading comfort -

Hidden spot for Blue Bottle! Perfect place to grab my morning cup of coffee and head to work. I have yet to try their sandwiches, but I hear they are pretty amazing.

If you work around here, you might have passed by it and not notice it. You really have to either bump on their sign on the sidewalk or have to be accidentally facing left to see the CAFE words and then go in.
Mostly busy at all times, they serve Blue Bottle Coffee (hint: to all those waiting outside of Starbucks across the St.) they also make paninis and bagels. Not the cheapest place but there's not much to choose from within a 4 block ratio and they have the best.
Cash only. -

What a nice lady! I didn't have any cash on me, so she told me to come back another day when I had the chance to pay her back.
Don't overlook those mini treats- they are so yummy! I believe they source from Miette, but I've certainly never seen them there before. My absolute favorite is the sandwich cookie that consists of 2 crumbly coconut cookies with a vanilla cream filling dressed with a layer of tart raspberry jam.
Lunch food is mediocre, but their breakfast bagels are generous, always toasted perfectly and HOT! -

San Francisco, CA
Very poor selection. There are two items on the lunch menu for vegetarians-- a salad you can pick up on any pre-made open fridge and a miniscule vegetable sandwich with undercooked vegetables.
Service was bad, but what can you expect from a foodstand? Person taking orders took forever to assist me after I permitted her friends to place their orders first.
The "cafe" is located inside an office building with a nice courtyard. It's probably a fantastic place to grab a quick bite for the people who work there. If you don't work there, consider going somewhere else.
I stumbled up on this place through Scoutmob. -

Really love this purveyor of blue bottle coffee. Beyond the great coffee, including specialty beverages - i recommend the soy mocha - they offer snacks, pastries, organic salads and yogurt, bagels, paninis and soup of the day during cold times (most times). The proprietors are Italian and love their business.
Your 12th beverage is free when you punch the card. -

If this place decided to change their format, and instead of serving coffee in a cup.....they simply hooked you up to an IV and you rolled up your sleeve and plugged in. I would be the guy youd see to the right of the register on the floor strung out and laying in my own filth.
Its that good. -

Hayward, CA
Jackson Place Cafe is a little hidden gem. It's located within a small courtyard near a salon and several offices. The big Jackson Place awning is enough hint of where this place is but you wouldn't suspect there being a cafe here. Just walk down the walkway on either side to get to the cafe.
The cafe is more like a kiosk or cafe window. There's enough room in the kiosk for two people to work but more than likely you'll only find one person working here during non lunch hours. The menu consists of hot drinks, panini, pastries, and some other stuff. The prices are relative to most other cafes.
Even though the cafe is small there are several chairs and tables in the courtyard for eating and drinking. Along the walls are benches too. I sometimes come here just to eat my lunch because it's pretty chill.
Last time I visited I had a hot drink and something that looked like a cream puff. My chai latte was really great and the foam was delicious. The cream puff thing turned out to be more like a pound cake filled with nutella. It was good but man was it filling! If you're expecting a cream puff, don't get it. If you want something yummy and super filling, get it. -

Caffeine.
The one kind of drug I do indulge in from a sporadic level to daily usage. Before meetings, before a workout, and even right before I go to sleep. That's right. I'm an addict.
It seems to work even more perfectly when I'm angry and need to expound upon certain situations before me. Case in point: having to deal with a man who consults his friends first prior to dissing the end of a supposed relationship. Ah, hello, "knock knock".........wrong door.
WTF.
Breaking up is easy.
Life is easy that way. Having to deal with someone who seems to keep it away from the other makes everything a bit more smoother regarding their interpersonal communication skills, or lack thereof, is the hard part. Incomprehension = I would not even taint the word in his direction. Not to mention dumping them before they try to cheat on me. Words of the wise, from my friend B, never trust a man who keeps secrets, in reality and online.
Jackson Place Cafe always delivers. There are no hidden promises of perfection or arrogance that comes associated with cafes in this district. Visiting friends that work downtown and stopping in for my usual Breve Latte was the perfect respite from the rest of the bustling world outside. The interior offers a calm placid look out from the concrete pillars of modernity but on a sunny day, taking your cup of coffee outside is pure bliss. Forgot your pastry? Run over to Safeway for an inexpensive scone to save you a few dollars during this recession.
I've been honest, per my previous reviews. I've cheated with another establishment. I'm an addict to liquids. I'm obviously an addict for lessons.
What is next for me? Not sure, but apparently long distance relationships do not work for me and if you want to know the secret why, Delphi Oracle, at your service. Yelp is, besides, not too large to hide oneself in and Asian ladies may come across him sooner or later............. -

What a find, I've just discovered this great little cafe, right near the Transamerica Pyramid. So if:
- you're looking for a truly great cup of coffee (it's Blue Bottle Coffee, at that!)
- you want to feel like you're in some European side-street for a while
- you want to practice your Italian with the owners (Giovanni's from Milan, Gabi's from Lugano)
- your idea of a cappuccino is that perfect melange of foam, froth, not-overly-searing coffee and a little dab of love
- you want good, quick service without waiting for some blase' barista to toil for 5 minutes over your brew...
... then I heartily suggest you come to Jackson Place Cafe (formerly Cafe Milano). It's an oasis in the financial district, and it feels like I'm strolling through the streets of some small town in the Ticino: that cool mix of order/style, with gas lamps (yeah, they're real gas!), brick and this brass-bedecked kiosk where you'll get simply sublime coffee and wonderful sandwiches to go.
Remember, the cafe is actually NOT on the street, as it's this little interior passage-way that splits the block. Look for the "One Jackson Place" sign in the middle of the block (enter either from Battery OR Sansome between Jackson and Pacific) and stroll right in. You'll have to search it out a tad, but it's well worth it.
Enjoy!
PS: Strike up a conversation with Giovanni and Gabi anytime, they're great owners! -

I can't believe I have not reviewed this place yet, because I come here at least once a week, sometimes twice when my will is weak.
This tiny little cafe is lovely and they make killer coffee. They serve Blue Bottle, which is a solid star if not two right there. They have Noah's Bagels and local meats and cheeses and everything (just about) is organic. Try the cream cheese and prosciutto on a sesame seed bagel, and I swear it will make you want to slap your mama.
The baristas are the fucking best. They pour leaves and hearts with the milk when you order a latte, and they ain't just being fancy. The beverages are always, always the bomb. (I am drinking one right now.) They say "ciao" and call you "bella." The entire experience is a charming one while you are there, then when you hit your desk with a hot Americano and a egg, cheese and pancetta everything bagel (only when i am hungover, people, don't judge), you will know you have visited a hell of a cafe.
Eat and drink here. -

Oh yeah! Blue Bottle Coffee is liquid love and I had a cuppa from Jackson Place Cafe today that rocked my world. I've got to go back when I can get a panini.
The setting is described perfectly. It really is from the Barbary Coast era by way of Vienna or Paris during La Belle Epoque. -

Best coffee in the fi-di. Hands down. No doubt. End of story.
I can never get over how foolish it is that there is a long line out the door at the Starbucks on Battery & Pacific, when not 50 yards away there is a small stand -- usually without a wait -- in which nice italian couple brews BLUE BOTTLE COFFEE using fancy italian cafe machines. Really hot, high pressure espresso machines -- the kind they don't have in Starbucks Land. And in a setting that's far more charming than any chain coffee store could ever provide. A trip down this alley, and you'll never want to go back to Starbucks again. -

Any place that sells blue bottle AND has great service is all stars from me! This "secret little alley" is always bustling with people that work in the area during the day.
They are now carrying the New Orleans Iced, my favorite no matter how cold it is outside. They also have a wide variety of panini sandwiches, salads and such.Listed in: Eating Around Levi's Plaza

It's a shame this place is tucked away, but their sidewalk board advertising Blue Bottle Coffee should be enough to lure you in. At $2 for a small cup, it's pricey for coffee, but for those who know, it's wholly worth it for BB. I've cut down on my caffeine consumption, but it's nice to have as an option to the Starbucks' that inhabit every block. Come here for that morning or early afternoon pick me up--if not from the coffee, from chatting with the awesome vendor that runs it.
Keeping with an Italian theme, paninis and pizza can also be had. A few tables are available out front, along with reading material for you to peruse as you kick back for a few. Before leaving, don't forget to punch your frequent buyer card: Buy 10, get one free. -

This tiny little cafe is tucked away in a tiny alley off of the main street. The only way I found this place was by finding it on the Yelp App on my phone. You are very unlikely to stumble on this place by yourself without already knowing where it is. However, this is place is a hidden gem. When you look at the the tiny building, you can't help but get the feeling that you've found something special.
And it is definitely special. I ordered a caramel macchiato espresso and a brew coffee it was so good. No Starbucks nonsense here. This is real coffee. Wonderful aroma, perfectly balanced taste. The espresso was also very rich without being overly bitter. Great coffee. It's as simple as that. If you're ever in the downtown San Francisco area, stop by here. You won't be disappointed. -

Berkeley, CA
I LOVE this coffee stand. It's not really a cafe, more like a small stand, but there are some small tables you can sit down at. Anyway, it's in a small alley between two small buildings off of Sansome and Battery. Just look for Jackson Place. It's a bit of a dig to find this joint, but it's worth it!
I get free coffee from work (evil Starbucks), but when I have a hankering for some *real* coffee, I come to this little stand. It's fabulous coffee. I usually drink Peet's and they use Blue bottle, but still...Blue Bottle is rich, fragrant coffee. Their coffee will make any terrible day a better one. I felt like crap today and after a sip of this coffee, the clouds parted and the sun came out (literally and figuratively). The owners are new (this used to be run by another couple). True Italians and their coffee reminds me of my college trip through Europe...Ah...a reminder of more simple days.
Other highlights:
- Other great treats (bagels - with egg, cream cheese, tomatoes, etc., muffins, scones, cookies, parfait). I've had a number of bagels with egg and cheese and they're really great (Bagels are from Noah's).
- Decent selection of juices (I noticed Odwalla last I was there).
- Lunch: They make fabulous paninis!
- Good magazines to peruse (e.g., Dwell)
-Friendly owners
Skip Starbucks and go to Jackson Place for a change! Starbucks is evil, disgusting coffee (fine, I admit it, I have a cup of Starbucks at least once/week). Jackson Place Cafe makes coffee that is rich, aromatic, nuanced...just how coffee should be! And, you can support a fabulous Italian couple by changing your coffee vendor!Listed in: For the Caffeine Fiends

Berkeley, CA
My Latte was smoother than a freshly waxed back...wait, that's a bit gross for a breakfast time review.
I am not a coffee snob. Dare I admit, I like a Starbucks latte. Sure, they are a chain and therefore somewhat evil, but they produce hot consistent espresso drinks that are not bitter. I am bitter adverse unless I am writing about Pluto's or talking about the Giants anemic offense.
Instead of heading over to Starbucks (partly inspired by other Yelpers) I stopped at JPC this morning as part of my Friday coffee before work right of passage. As for having survived the week, I feel I should be rewarded. The location is in the alley of my office complex - a notoriously horrid place to host a business that has been the home of three cafes and a flower stand in the last five years. I assume this place will die a quick death too. There just isn't enough foot-traffic.
But I digress. The coffee was amazing. Smooth and tasty, rich and creamy - and mine was low-fat and decaf! I won't lie, Blue Bottle Coffee means nothing to me but it has a pheromone like effect on the coffee snobs. That the cafe has a Ferrari of a coffee machine rates only slightly higher on the I don't know / I don't care scale of my coffee knowledge too. But I admit the taste and texture was amazing.
Best yet, and the reason I felt compelled to review, they seem to be genuinely concerned for the environment. At every turn on their menu you see Organics. The crowning fact is that they use compostable paper cups made from renewable resources. Music to my Berkeleyan ears!
This place will probably not last but it should. Not just because the product is good, but because they are making responsible choices. I for one will give them my business from now on because of those choices.Listed in: Lunch time jaunts in the…, It isn't easy being Green

Jackson Place Cafe is super cute and yes they really do brew Blue Bottle!
NOTE: They do NOT brew the New Orleans Iced Coffee all the time... if it's not an unusually warm sunny week in SF, they probably won't have the iced coffee. Just a heads up for people like me who will drink iced coffee in the tundra, might wanna call ahead and ask -

Oh lordy. I just started working in this neighborhood, and boy, for all the coffee shops you can try there sure are a lot of Peet's and Starbuck's. Not that I don't like chains. Oh wait, I don't. Sorry, chains, and the nice people who work there, you're really nice, but I am not going to continue to pour money into your quest for world domination.
Bah ha ha! Hello, Jackson Place Cafe! I read your reviews on Yelp and they said you are a god among men, or rather, and small shop among chains. And you serve delicious coffee. Screw it if it's a few dollars for a drip coffee, it's good and strong and they also serve some food. I almost bought a pastry! But I didn't because I'd already spent nearly $10 dollars on the panini and drip coffee, which is pricey.
Also, not that hard to find. They have a sign. There's a picture. Don't be frightened. I'll update this if I decide to change my mind, but I like it, yay! I might leave the office once a day! Hoorah. -
Review from Tien N.
Jackson Place Cafe is the cafe formerly known as Cafe Milano which was formerly a hole in the ground which was probably formerly a place where some dinosaurs probably peed on once upon a time.
It can't really be described as a hole in the wall because it's in the middle of the plaza area, but it has that sort of feeling. It's basically a tastefully, and neatly decorated shack that's a kitchen and cash register. The sandwich selection is small, but supposedly it's all about the coffee at this place. I make it a rule never to have to pay for my coffee since its free in the office--soo, I may be selling this place a little short.
In any case, the sandwich was described by my coworkers as "the most mediocre sandwich I've had since I've been in San Francisco". Coming from a couple British guys, that's quite a strong statement.
And since I seemed so harsh in the above review, I'll make up for my meanness and give it three instead of two. Especially since the mom & pop that worked there were so incredibly friendly.
However the one consolation to going here was that I got to hear my coworker say my favorite British word..."I did quite enjoy the sun-dried *tomato*"..."tomato" pronounced toe-maught-toe.
Definitely two stars otherwise. -

I come here every morning on the way to office. Great coffee and great staff.
Yeahs: Consistently great tasting, high quality products (coffee, tea, breakfast danishes/pastries), happy staff who remember you, what you like to order, and it's in a GREAT location... reminds me of a small "callejon" in Madrid, or nice walkway in the cities of Paris or Italy! Also, one time I had no money on me, they let me have my daily fix and just told me to come back and pay the next day (they don't accept ATM/DR/CR cards)....
Nays: They don't take ATM/DR/CR Cards, and they only offer 1 (one) size for their take-away drinks. I enjoy more than just a cup of coffee, and wished they'd have larger cups!
I'd give 5 stars if they accepted ATM/DR/CR Cards for payment as well as if they would offer larger sizes (and of course, I'd be happy to pay more!).
Nonetheless, it's a great place with great ambience, great coffee, and friendly staff! -

The sweet taste of Blue Bottle Coffee can be yours without the long lines and long wait here at Jackson Place Cafe. Tucked away down a little alley...between a few office buildings you're transported into what feels like a totally different city...maybe even country.
9 times out of 10 you will hear Andrea Bocelli playing as you order...what a great way to start a morning - calm sweet sounds of his voice.
I like to think that even tho my morning coffee is $2.50 (compared to the under $2 coffees from the nearby shops)...it has some kind of super powers that makes my morning wiz by...
probably because they use Blue Bottle Coffee...and they make each drip coffee by the cup.
They also have the a frequent buyer card...if you buy 12 coffees than you get 1 free...I'm well on my way! -
