Review from Reese D.
The Ivory was a recommendation made by some friends, so I decided to try it out on my trip to Winnipeg. The atmosphere was amazing and the food was fantastic! I travel for work and have tried many Indian restaurants, and the quality and attention paid to to detail in every manner at Ivory far surpasses all.
They have a large buffet which is great for people who might want to taste things they might not have ever had the chance to. I ordered some items of the menu, such as the Paneer Pakoras and Bombay Chat to accompany my meal.
Ivory Restaurant is truly a gem for all those visiting Winnipeg. -

Ivory is your standard typical Canadian style Indian buffet. There is plenty of butter chicken, tandoori chicken and chili chicken to fill your Indian buffet needs. For the slightly more adventurous there is beef vindalo which despite the name has almost no spices whatsoever. The vegetable biryani is dull with soggy vegatables. The naan, which is ordered separately from the buffet, is fresh and warm, honestly could be eaten in lieu of the buffet itself. There is a larger than expected dessert menu with gulab jaman, kheer and burfi though all of these seem like pale imitations of the real thing.
The restaurant itself is very large, broken into bar and dining room halves with plenty of seating available. The walls have Indian themes painting and artwork though the overall impression is that of slightly dingy wedding / banquet hall. The location is convenient to the hotel which makes it our choice for quick Indian food however I would recommend spending a little more time on Yelp to see if there are other options nearby if you have transportation available. -

Yum. Yum. Yum.
The food here was outstanding. The dishes were mostly chicken, but there was a shrimp dish, a lamb dish, and a couple vegetarian dishes too. The spice level was even hot enough for my boyfriend who likes his food HAWT. There were about a dozen different "main course" dishes on the buffet, along with samosas and a salad bar.
Cons: The accent of one server was a little heavy; we couldn't understand all the different types of naan available. The servers also wrote our order down wrong and when we paid there was some confusion and public chastising of the servers in front of us, which was a little awkward. Also, the soda was served in cans, which I hate, but seems to be the norm in Canada.
Pros: Besides the amazing food? Other than the beautiful decor? The service was amazing, with constant water refills and check-ins to see how we were doing. The owner himself (I presume) checked in on us.
We'd eat here again with no qualms at all.
(I wore jeans, my BF wore khakis, others were in traditional saris, and we all fit in just fine.) -

Why does this place offer Greek salad in it's buffet??!? I don't think anyone goes to an Indian buffet to try the Greek salad...but obviously people eat it or otherwise it wouldn't be in the salad bar.
Anyways, I'm not a fan of the buffet here....there's not as many items offered here compared to another place downtown. But most of all everything tastes bland here! Ivory's not bad if you haven't tried Indian food before because you can't compare it to anything else. It's really for the masses who think they're eating exotic food but really, it's just diluted Indian food.
But at least the decor is pretty...blues and purples with a few Indian decorative items.
The lunch buffet is about $15 - but at that price point for a lunch, it's not at the top of my list. -

Made it by here three time this last year. The buffet is OK, but set up for the Canadian taste. After that ordering food from the menu is OK, however there are better places near by. The short answer although they serve good food unless someone else picks this restaurant to meet at I would not go here.

We really enjoyed the atmosphere. The food was spot on and authentic. The servers were friendly and prompt, my water glass was never dry. As the other reviewer commented there was a Greek salad and it was delicious! I recommend it if you are in Winnipeg and hungry for great Indian cuisine.

Terrible service. Tired interior. Go to East India Company a stone's throw away for a much better experience.
