I've had the pleasure of eating at Irori several times. Its always been a great experience, I've had business lunches here, eaten with co-workers, and love bringing dates here. The food is fantastic no matter what time of day your eating. The serice is also first rate.
However, wear clean socks, they make you take off your shoes when entering. -

First review on Yelp, and you bet I picked Irori to be my first! (I love it that much)
I moved to the area a year ago and was introduced to Irori by my BF.
- Wear clean socks, you will have to take your shoes off, so please, no stinky feet.
The food is always very fresh, which is a must when eating sushi.
A must order in my book is the Bluefin toro (usually $12 for 2 pieces) and the Albacore roll (ask for ponzu sauce)
We love sitting at the bar and interacting with the chefs who are always very friendly and make great suggestions when you're not sure what to order.
It does get pretty crowded, especially Friday nights, call ahead ;)
Oh, for those of you who don't like sushi, they have all sorts of "cooked" food.
So, bring the kids and order some teriyaki chicken and rice :) -

I may have found a new home to satisfy my sushi craving! I
Should have read the part about taking ones shoes off before being seated. Not that I had a problem mind you but the the family with the kids next to us...well Ill keep it polite and stick to my review.
But yes, the deal with having to take ones shoes off is very cool and from what television has taught me very customary. I enjoyed sitting with my feet below in a pit and everyone being the same height. The portions are a bit small but thats okay summer in near and I don't need to over do it. Overall a great atmosphere with polite and punctual service. I recommend making a reservation for the weekend, it seems to fill up quick.
Damn straight, I'm a fan of Irori i i i :DListed in: Sushi Experineces

This place required reservation for a late night dinner if you want to be seated on a table~ would've never guessed there was a popular joint in corner of a shopping plaza in MDR. Without reservation we were promptly seated in sushi bar~ it was cramped but not too bad like you'd be elbowing someone sitting next to you while you are eating~
Took a friend out for birthday dinner~ sushi quality was great~ price was a bit steep (plan on spending at least $50/pp) compared to other sushi restaurants in west LA however, if quality meets up to expectation, it's worth it~
The most talked about item, blue crab hand roll was yummy~ and all the sushi I had was yummy! Not one complaint~ Black cod was tiny, but it was delicious~!
If you are in MDR and want quality sushi, this place is good option. However, I had better in my past so it won't be a 5 star. -

Wonderful atmosphere. Very traditional, you take your shoes off at the front of the restaurant before they take you back to be seated. The tables are on the ground, don't let this alarm you though, there is a hole in the ground so you're pretty much sitting like you would in a chair.
The sushi was wonderful. The fish was very fresh. They have great portion sizes too. My husband and I left very full! He ordered the chicken teriyaki with tempura veggies and was very pleased. -

I'm a sushi snob and I finally found a local place to frequent! First, the seating is awesome. You sit on the ground, but there is a sitting space for your feet and legs under the table. The sushi is very fresh and everything we got was absolutely delicious. A couple favorites were the spicy tuna with crispy rice, spicy tuna roll, and the hot night. The only downside is that their special rolls can be expensive...$18+, but well worth it for the taste and quality. Great service as well, we had to wait only about 15 minutes to be seated on a Friday night without a reservation!

Borderline 5 stars but I prob should go more often to justify them (and gladly will). We went on the recommendation of a local who has consistently displayed good taste. Irori was hardly an exception.
Despite it being crowded (always a good sign), we were attended to and seated virtually immediately. I'm a sucker for the "take the shoes off and sit on the floor" Nihon-style dining and it totally works here. There's just something fun and freeing about having no shoes or stature, being only able to order and receive.
And we did. We started with the California rolls - certainly ample - and gulped down the tasty miso and salads before getting the lucious Chicken Teriyaki and Unajyu main dishes. The sushi bar was full and looked great but we weren't regretting our choices with these main dishes. The teriyaki was not over salty with the right amount of delicious sauce, side condiments and rice. Ditto the unajyu, which was silky smooth and definitely tasty, peppered with sesame seeds.
The service was on every detail, clearing dishes and bringing the next ones promptly and courteously.
Definitely coming back on the next Marina del Rey boondoggle!Listed in: LaLa Land

Absolutely fantastic! Had nigeri and green tea so good! Service was quick and polite. Got to sit on the floor. Very traditional Japanese. And great price!! Got a full meal for 30$ and that included soup, salad, 9 piece sushi, two piece side, and fantastic sweet potato dessert, plus complementary tea. Definitely going back!! With friends!

Walk in the door, have a seat and remove your shoes.. socks match?!?! Yes, we're good....
Okay... sitting on the floor.. I may have been the only one completely ignorant to the fact that you aren't sitting cross legged on a pillow near the table.. there is plenty of space under the table.. you sit normally, the table is just built into the ground. a very pleasant surprise for this girl that would rather stand than sit "indian" style... (I won't lie, I was effing shocked)
Now onto the food.. sushi was fresh, tasty and everything you'd hope for. I tried Salmon, Tuna and Yellow tail Sushi. Just a tad on the pricey side.
I would not recommend this place for large groups.. appeared to be only one table that could seat 8.. nothing bigger... Also I did notice 2 seats at the sushi bar that do not require shoes being removed, they are immediately in front of you when you walk through the entrance...
Come to this place mainly for the experience and EXCELLENT service.. Staff was extremely friendly and always available.. But please, leave your stinky shoes at home. -

Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, CA
Just ate there tonight. We were looking forward to a pleasant sushi dinner given the wonderful decor, but things didn't go so well once we sat down at the bar. The sushi chefs were Korean, and they seemed rude on purpose. We asked for the menu and they handed me a dirty, stained, and used sushi checklist / menu. Then, Justin (one of the sushi chefs), asked me to order with him when I already ordered with another chef. He then takes over one of our roll orders, and after handing it to us, leaves us without wasabi or ginger. We asked for it, and he chuckles and hands us some while asking if that was all we were going to order. We ordered an Alaskan roll, and I saw another chef make the roll, then halfway through making it stop, sighs, then dumps the meat that he touched back into the display before using a different meat. I didn't eat this roll, but my girlfriend did. Now she's a bit sick :(.
Followup edit - our wait staff service was all right. -

I had no expectations for the day and had been hanging around the westside with my buddy who is 90292 bound. We tried hitting up this one spot on Lincoln and Mindanao but to our surprise was shut down. So he recommends this second spot he has never been to and when we got in and they asked for me to take my flip flops off, I was stoked!! The closest anything Japanese traditional I have dined in a very, very long time. After I took my shoes off and tucked it in a little cubby corner, our hostess sat us down at the bar. No chairs, no gimmicks... just good happy-ole sit on my butt sushi dining.
I was already overzealous with suspicion before I tell the sushi chef, "Just give me whatever you want tonight." He first started with shrimp....by grabbing out it's live tingley tentacles before my eyes and decapitating that sucker! Seconds later it was in my mouth. How is that for fresh? We continued to order on and...dude... I just love this place. It's like zen for my taste buds. -

Playa del Rey, CA
The is the best sushi restaurant in the Marina, Westchester and Playa Del Rey area.
The food is really good and the service is "johnny on the spot." We enjoyed sashimi and various rolls. The sashimi is the real test. Everything was so fresh. Likewise, the soft shell crab tasted like crab and not tempura batter.
We washed down with the best house hot saki.
If we had not been sitting right in front of the entry to the kitchen (Understandably, it was Saturday night and all other tables were taken.), I would have given them 5 stars. The service was very attentive. It was really excellent.
I look forward to returning in the very near future. -

First think you'll notice when you walk in is that yes, you do sit on the floor. But keep in mind, there is space below the table for your legs, so its just like a chair. You aren't sitting cross legged or anything. And it seems they have little cushions with backrests if you ask.
I thought the food was very good, very fresh, etc. Do check out their specials and do ask what the sushi chefs recommends. I think that is the way to go.
Not the cheapest sushi, but worth the price. And tea is free!
I would put this into my sushi rotation, but because of its price its not an every week place.
Also, parties of 6 or more, you'll have to wait a bit. There is one 6 person table and one that I think can hold 8, so you are really limited if people are already seated etc. And due to the nature of the whole sitting on the floor thing, you cannot move tables. Seemed that parties of 2 and 4 were seated quickly. -

Marina del Rey, CA
LOVE this place. Its so adorable - they make you take off your shoes and sit in traditional japanese dining table where you take your shoes off first.
The fish is super fresh, I think its some of the best in all of LA.
My favorites are - spicy tuna on crispy rice (its huge, much bigger portion that you'd get elsewhere). Albacore roll - has crispy onion inside. The Irori roll is to die. They marinate the tuna in cilantro and some oils before rolling it. Sooo good. -

I love this place!!!!! =) be ready to wait, there's always people waiting, specially on weekends. AND Wear clean socks! since you have to take your shoes off to sit in the restaurant. If you are familiar with the area, this place is wayyy better than SAKURA on centinela blvd ( which is also really good). I've been here several times, and I was never disappointed. For better experience, ask for a table not a bar! you'll se what i'm talking about once you there ;)

This place gets 4.5 stars, and is our new favorite sushi spot on the west side of LA! When you first arrive to the restaurant you have to take your shoes off (kinda weird at first, but adds to the experience), and then are seated at tables that are low to the ground, on the floor, but there is space for your legs beneath. You sit on pillows and could sit indian style, but you can put your legs underneath the table which is more comfortable and nice for taller people. I thought it was a cool set up and adds to the ambience.
My boyfriend and I went with another couple and we ordered several dishes to share. Loved the spicy tuna, salmon & irori rolls. Also tried the fried chicken dish (odd choice at a sushi joint, but good), and a bowl of udon noodles (tempura style) and all were delicious. The other couple we were with tried the shrimp skewers and said those were good as well. I don't remember what kind of sake we ordered by it was light, refreshing, crisp and some of the best sake I have tried. It was recommended by our waitress and I believe it cost around $15. The only thing that I didn't love was the dynamite dish. It was good, it just wasn't as good compared to other dynamite dishes I've had at other places.
They also have a good selection of Japanese beers, both regular and light. The service was fantastic, and we had several people tending to our table that were very attentive to our needs.
We will definitely be back!! -

Don't wear your Jimmy Choo's when you come here. They make you take off your shoes and leave them at the front before you get seated, so your Jimmy's are pretty much free-for-all if they're just hanging out in front.
We ate here for dinner last night and the food was delicious! I ordered their Nabeyaki Udon for $11.25 and it was probably the best-tasting udon I've ever had. The broth was simply delicious, and the udon noodles were of the right consistency and chewiness. It's fun sitting on the floor with your friends. Something about being lower to the ground makes people happier. -

I love the ambiance here. This is probably one of my favorite sushi restaurants to go to, and their prices are reasonable ($7 black cod and $11.50 Chilean sea bass). Been a few times and their fish has always been fresh (yellowtail always). We got the blue fin toro for $12 for 2 pieces and that was b u t t e r. Literally melted in my mouth. Amazing. Raved about it to my friend, and now she's planning her birthday dinner there. Yay!

This place is great! Not a big fan of the chuck e cheese feeling of taking off shoes before you are seated, but everything else about this place makes up for that. The service was great, had a really nice waitress. The food is fantastic! The fish is fresh and delicious!!! I also ordered the terriyaki chicken, I wasn't expecting much, but it was really good!!! This place deserves all 5 stars!

Yummi Irori... how you have made me love Japanese food even more.
They are hidden in a little plaza right next to CVS in Marina del Rey and it's easy to miss them if you don't pay attention. They just went through construction in that plaza too so their restaurant sign is not even on.
They have lunch specials, which are pretty nicely priced with a fair amount of food. Their tempura is good, but my favorite thing there is the crispy rice tuna. It's sooooooooo good! Their yellowtail sashimi is fresh and delightful. Sushi quality is great - everything just melts in your mouth good.
The ambiance is ridiculously cute. When you come in, you have to take off your shoes and then they walk you to your seat, where you sit on the floor and you put your legs in these holes that are been made underneath the table. It's totally Japanese Tatami style (just a bit more comfortable with the leg space).
The place can get crowded but I have never waited more than 10 mins for a table (on the floor).
The only reason I give it a 4 star is because the prices can be expensive if you don't get the lunch specials. I've been here for dinner and it's easy 40 bucks per person if you order several items. But then again, you are in the Marina.
Maybe I'll go there for lunch today. :) -
Review from Jim A.
I've been going to Irori for about 10 years now. This is one of those hidden Gems that not a lot of people know of. The restaurant is located in the Marina Del Rey shopping center near the CVS store. One thing I love about this restaurant is the authenticity. When you enter the restaurant you are required to remove your shoes and then you can either choose to sit at the sushi bar or get a table. The tables are sunken which is kind of cool and many of the restaurants in Japan are like that. The atmosphere is what you can expect from a Japanese restaurant.
The food is excellent..everything from the Benito boxes to the sushi, there are very few dishes that will not meet your expectations. The last time I visited was on 12/4/11 right after I went to see the Nutcracker with my friend Ariun. We sat at the bar area and ordered an array of sushi both rolls and sushi as well as edamame, fried calamari, green tea and mochi ice cream. I was very surprised by the bill considering the amount of food we ordered - the bill was less than $100. Overall, an excellent experience both from a food and setting standpoint. -

Chino, CA
The sushi was okay. I've had similar or better quality sushi at other places for cheaper prices.
Remember to wear socks because you don't know where other people's smelly feet have been. Since you have to take off your shoes at the front, the restaurant provides slippers to wear when you use the restroom at the back. Kind of gross thinking about the cleanliness of those slippers.
After all these years, my friends and I still have problems splitting the bill between a large group. We always come up short, so we have to count the money a million times. After we were confident that we had enough, we gave the waitress our cash and cards. She comes back to tell us that we were about $30 short. WHAT?!?! We counted that thing SO MANY TIMES. And you know what got us upset? They didn't bring the cash back for us to count!!! If you don't get enough money, wouldn't you bring the whole thing back to SHOW the customer that they are short? They took all the cash out and charged the cards. How were we suppose to argue with them that we paid enough when there was nothing there??? Shady...ugh. We were all ready to get the heck out of there and just put more money in and left. -

I must start off with saying my favorite part of the Irori experience was taking my shoes off and sitting on a cushion on the floor to dine here. It is such a relaxing place to be and everyone is so extremely friendly and so very helpful!
I ordered the seared ono, which was really good and also the Philadelphia roll. Everything was really good.. The ingredients could have been a little bit fresher (like the avocado in my roll). But other than that it is a great place to have sushi. -

I have a favorite sushi restaurant in all my favorite little cities in LA and this place happens to be one of them in the city of Marina del Rey! I love that you have to remove your shoes before dining and I love that the service is exactly what I expected - FAST! The sushi here is excellent and the taste is superb!
NOTE: make reservations, bring socks and order the BCH, toro roll, wakame seaweed salad and white chocolate creme brûlée! -

We ordered omakasa and the chef brought out some plates. At the end we get a bill with tacked on charges even though we weren't told it was extra. We didn't ask for it either he brought it out as part of the omakasa. Pissed me off and I complained and they basically said too bad. Rip off.

Review from Andrew H.
I have been here many times over the past few years, with my parents, or with my brother and his wife and kids, but only last night, eating sushi at the sushi bar with my mom, in the little "handicapped" section, did I realize how truly good the sushi is, and how high their standards are.
Forgive me, because I cannot remember all the type of sushi I had, but it was all buttery, fresh, soft, mouth-watering. The sushi chefs were very attentive and very polite, even thought the restaurant was completely full. Our bill, for the two of us, with one large hot sake and six orders of sushi...$98. But it was really worth it.
For people who choose to sit at tables, remember that this is a real Japanese restaurant, where shoes are removed at the front door and one ascends onto an elevated stage of sunken seats, consisting of cushions arranged around knee high wooden tables . One's feet are kept in a sunken well below the table.
The crowd is composed of many ages and types of people, and for the most part the people are well behaved. But last night, there was a table of males and females: obnoxious, baseball capped, beer guzzling.... and carousing and kissing and clowning. They had no manners and they disturbed the other diners.
You can trust the chefs and the sushi here and it is a first-class place to eat and relax almost always. -

Marina Del Rey, CA
We've been coming here for the past 9 months about once a month since moving to Marina. It has become our go-to sushi place, in my opinion the best the area has to offer.
The plusses: great, friendly service; wide selection of food (they made me an oyster shot, for instance, most sushi places don't seem to be able to do that); just the right amount of noise, not so loud that you have trouble hearing, but loud enough that nobody can really overhear you; pretty much everything we've eaten here has been great, and if we didn't enjoy something, it was due to a personal taste thing and not the food itself. Sushi experimentation is a safe adventure here.
The only minus, and it really isn't one, is that it's located in a strip mall, and doesn't look like much from the outside. Once you walk inside, though, it's a whole different world, and frankly the strip mall to me is a plus because it means unlimited, non-valet, free parking!
Not sure why people get all bent-out-of-shape over the no shoes thing, but a lot of people seem uncomfortable about it. I guess for that reason alone, it may not be a first or second date kind of place, but otherwise just realize that nobody else is wearing shoes and roll with it! Trust me, you won't be the first or the last to have holes in your mismatched socks there... -

Went for lunch with a friend. Service was excellent and lunch specials were decent, especially considering the quality.
We each had the sashimi special. The salmon sashimi I had practically melted in my mouth and came with generous side items. My friend's tuna sashimi looked fresh and delicious.
Would definitely go back. -

The restaurant that asks you to take off your shoes! I love it, but some people need to make sure their feet dont smell because that could be a disastrous combo with all the fish present.
The sushi is so fresh! I will and have come back since my first visit. This place is definitely a marina del rey gem. -

I should begin by saying, I always have mixed feelings about eating places that require the removal of your shoes. Not every one has the same idea of personal hygiene or appropriate sock-matching. I choose my green argyle socks for this occasion and they were a hit with the hostess! ;-)
The ambiance in this place was intimate but casual. I appreciated that while you could choose bar seating or the sunken floor tables, they still offered seats to anyone who preferred back support.
The food itself was nothing to write home to Japan about, but the service was great and the offerings were decent. The waitstaff was very attentive and informative, but you did have to ask about the menu items because they didn't readily offer that information. -
Review from Tara F.
Stopped by Irori for lunch on the way back from the airport. As most people have mentioned, the place is tough to find - just park near Pavilions and head towards Radio Shack.
The food was a really pleasant surprise for the location. We had the Sashimi Assortment ($16.50) which came with a salad, miso soup, rice, fruit, and a side of pickled cucumbers (no pickled ginger, surprisingly). The fish was good quality, and there was a generous portion. We also had the tempura udon ($10); the soup base was excellent and richly flavored, the noodles perfectly al dente; the tempura itself was pretty lackluster, as was the dipping sauce. We also have been ordering Shishito peppers everywhere we go, so we tried them here, blistered and seasoned with soy sauce. They were very good, with a really subtle flavor (make sure you get some of the garlic soy sauce that pools at the bottom), as compared to something like Lazy Ox Canteen.
As with Japanese places in general, it's not super cheap - lunch ended up being $42 (including tip) for 2.
Definitely a good option for an airport lunch; though I would also recommend Gardena Bowl for same. -

Beverly Hills, CA
Delicious sushi with an authentic Japanese restaurant feel. When you walk in, you remove your shoes and put them into a cubby hole near the hostess' desk. All of the tables you sit down on a cusion on the floor, but some of them are located on a raised deck-like platform and with cutouts underneath the tables so when you sit your feet naturally go underneath the deck surface. It's kind of hard to explain but if you've been there then you know what I'm talking about.
For me, whenever I go to a sushi restaurant that feels more authentic I always find that the sushi is better and less "dressed up". I am referring to when you go to these big sushi restaurants and they have all of these crazy huge rolls with all types of sauces, toppings and what not. At Irori it's all about the quality of the fist and the authenticity than it is making the rolls look crazy and piling on all types of toppings. I am a huge fan of hand rolls, I usually start out with a spicy tuna and avocado handroll. The sushi rollers at Irori did a fantastic job...absolutely delicious. I also had 3 orders of albacore sashimi with generous portions of ponzoo sauce...again, absolutely delicious.
I cannot recall what the last roll I split with my friends was because the others voted on what they wanted in it since I pretty much love everything. I know there was definitely cucumber and avocado in it, and I'm pretty sure there was crab among other things also inside. I wish I could remember to give you all a better description and review, but it was also fantastic. I'm a big fan of any roll with cucumber and avocado in it because I love the crunch that cucumber adds along with the avocado, one of my favorite tastes in entire world.
Irori is a fantastic, delicious and authentic sushi restaurant. I haven't been to any others in Marina del Ray so if you're in this area, I would highly recommend Irori! -

This place in phenomenal! Best place I've come across in Southern California.
The atmosphere is great and the fish exceeds expectations. You must try the Toro (Blue Fin), the crispy rice sushi and the Tempura Green Tea ice cream. The service was fantastic and entertaining, the fish quality is exceptional, and the price is very reasonable. You can't go wrong with this place. -

My roomie's birthday deserved a special date night!
So glad she can eat sushi despite being vegetarian :-)
Order up:
Spicy tuna on crunchy rice = B+
Baked blue crab handroll = A-
(2) Dragon roll (eel/avocado over California roll) = A+
Philadelphia roll (salmon/cream cheese/avocado) = A-
(2) Asahi draft beer ($16)
Total = $86 + tip = $100 for two.
Experience:
+ Tuna, eel and blue crab were AMAZINGLY fresh. The dragon roll was SO good that we ordered another one right after. Still drooling thinking about how fresh that was!
+ Super fast/friendly service - the servers were dressed in costume on Halloween and giggled at my costume. So adorable!
+ Classy and romantic ambiance - perfect for dates.
- Pricey! (but worth every penny)
- They charge $2 per bowl of miso soup. This seems basic to me.
- $12 charge for BYOB. Yikes!
Tip:
*I'd skip the spicy tuna on crunchy rice and go straight for the dragon rolls. So glad I read the Yelp reviews ahead! Thanks for the suggestions guys :-)
