Jersey City, NJ
The Iron Monkey has really stepped up their game lately. They now sport an enormous list of beers that reads like a novel. The rooftop is still the best spot to be in downtown JC in the summer, though it seems to shrink a bit each year. The bar food is excellent- the spicy popcorn is a great deal that will satisfy any drunken munchies. In what is now a quite expensive paulus hook, the monkey has the best value in the area.
If you are a beer lover, sign up for their email list as during the week they have "meet the brewer nights" where craft breweries come by and you can meet the actual brewers, while sampling their lesser known beers.1 Previous Review: Show all »

It's time to update my review.
Consistently great service, beer selection and food. Compared to, say, Skinners Loft, Iron Monkey is so much better and you get great value for money too.
Now, when the weather is warm the rooftop bar is my favorite destination.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Two words: ROOFTOP BAR.
Another word: BEER.
These two factors form the recipe for a great neighborhood bar that's not crowded with degenerates who flock to the nearby beer garden (no names).
I've come here for day drinking, happy hour drinking, and night drinking... with the occasional dinner thrown in the mix. The beer selection is awesome, and the food just good enough to be paired with the drinks.
I secretly hope that no one will discover this hidden gem in the neighborhood so that I can continue coming back here time and time again. -

Love love live their rooftop. Went for Easter brunch. Stayed and basked under the sun for the next 4 hrs... they did not complain. Food was just ok... except for their spicy fries and Mac and cheese (more like pasta with really good Alfredo sauce).
Those spicy fries are lethal and the perfect pair to their mean bloody Mary. Yes it was that kind of Easter brunch. -

Benjamin and Kim, the bar tenders were nice but the clientele was crap (late night). Lesson learned.
Story: There was a short little drunk Asian guy that was cussing and yelling at some humble patrons... and he was allowed to stay (because he is a local??!) I was astonished (but I am a local too??) The GM, waiters and the bartenders seemed to bow to his loud curses and even go as far as taking his side.
Even though I frequent and love this place, I will likely not return unless it is for dinner. The employees cannot control the "little" crowd at night.
But my Mac n' Cheese was DANK.Listed in: YELP...Im Hungry In Jersey…, Im so THIRSTY... SO BEER ME!…

Jersey City, NJ
I really have a love/hate relationship with this place. I wish it wasn't such a yo-yo relationship, but I can only blame the Monkey. I hold up my end of the bargain every time I come in to this place. I arrive ready to drink, with like-minded friends in tow, and a pocketful of Twenties. I am not sure what else I am supposed to do....If I'm missing something, please tell me.
Seat at the bar in front of taps....love relationship. Great service. Easy to see what's on tap and/or speak to the bartender(s) about what is new, good, a 'must-try' etc.
Seat anywhere away from the taps....service slows immensely. Your only hope is that you someone is closing out their tab so the bartender comes to the register, or if on the other end, someone orders a beer from one of the taps at the front of the bar. If not, you will find yourself waiting.
Standing....Forget it! You have a better chance of finding a manager, filling out an application, getting hired as a bartender, and going behind the bar to pour yourself a beer.
I have to say though....it's not all bad. The bar is small, but if not crowded it has that neighborhood local vibe that I can't get enough of. The ever-changing selection of beers is absolutely stellar, not to mention the Growler take out service. Oh, and don't forget the Growler delivery & pick up service.
The place has a restaurant area on the second floor which I've only passed through to get to the roof. The roof is cool when it is not scorching hot, but be advised, the bar is small. Not many seats, and also tough to get a drink.
I haven't eaten much here, but everything I've tried is just OK. A bit overpriced for what it is really. I also haven't heard anyone say, "Iron Monkey...you have to eat there."
This place is known for the roof top bar and Growler service. Enjoy it for what it is, but don't get frustrated if you have to wait for a beer. I warned you.Listed in: Reviews

Cool tri-level rooftop bar, good atmosphere and music but thats about it. The food was average and getting a beer rooftop was more complicated than a visit to the DMV. The service and bartender was very nice but soooo sloooow. The pace of service was 1 beer per hour, not good if you are thirsty.

Hoboken, NJ
Been here a few times for happy hours. The inside is incredibly cramped, and the service is really slow. It can take 10 minutes to get noticed by a bartender, even though there aren't that many people around. Good selection of beers, but last time we were there, we kept ordering beers and they would go "check" for 5 minutes only to come back and say that beer was not available. This happened several times. And they don't fill your beer all the way, but rather leave at least 1/2 inch of space in the top of your glass.
Also, they advertise a $1 "beer of the day" starting at 5pm on their sign outside, but when we went inside they said it didn't start until 7pm, so I guess that is false advertising. It's a shame because they play good music and this place has a lot of potential. But the only reason to really ever go here is for the rooftop bar in the summer, and even then I'd rather go somewhere else that does a better job of appreciating it's cusomters. -

Jersey City, NJ
This is one of my new favorite spots. Having recently moved from Hoboken to JC my boyfriend and I were looking for our "let's go out to dinner and get little or a lotta bit drunk" spot. This fits the bill perfectly!
They have a large beer selection which is a sure way to the heart (or liver) for both me and my boyfriend. They have also made a pretty dang good dirty shirley (shirley temple with vodka) for me and these bartenders certainly pour their drinks to incredibly accurate counts! Not too little or too much!
i looked at some of the other reviews and i was a little surprised, the only service I have ever received here has been excellent. We have always received out drinks quickly and the managers, bartenders, and waitstaff are incredibly friendly and helpful.
The food is great from my perspective and very affordable. Those spicy fries are SPICY! Everything else has been great, I like the Asian wrap and have ordered some of the salad and pasta entrees and none have disappointed!
It is a little small on the inside, but I mean it is in a converted brownstone- the building is just not that big! I can't wait for summer, guaranteed you will find me parked up on the rooftop drink in hand! -

Jersey City, NJ
I've been here a number of times over the past year and I can honestly recommend this place for anyone wanting some great craft beer on tap. From a craft beer perspective they have an extensive tap menu that anyone from a noob to a beer geek can appreciate. Plus they have hundreds of beers in bottles, you can't go wrong.
They also have special event nights, mainly on Thursdays that feature a brewery or a rare beer. Like this past Thursday, it was Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) night and it was great. For big events like CBS night expect to have a crowd but that's expected for a beer that fetches $100 per bottle on tap for $8. This is a must visit for someone looking for great beer and a great place to grab some good eats.
They have some great staff including Brant the beer manager and bartenders like Chelsey and Emily ... if you are in the area stop by and tell the The Keg Tap sent you. Cheers!!!! -
Review from Ed A.
I really wanted to like this bar. After all, it's not often I can say to my friends that I'm taking them to a cool rooftop bar in my hometown. In the end, Iron Monkey is a bar that sticks to its guns - namely, a neighborhood style bar with an extensive beer list - but the subpar service and cramped layout makes it a 2 star place in my book.
Downstairs
The first floor is just your typical pub atmosphere. A bar and a TV, and a nondescript surrounding. They do have quite a few different types of beer on tap, which is a plus. However, what kills it for me is the amount of time it takes to get a beer. It's not like the place is overflowing with fist pumpers trying to line up the bar with shots. The few times I've been, the place has only had ~10 people at the first floor. What sucks is that the bartenders, in their attempt to be cool/social with the patrons and with each other, oftentimes ignore 80% of the bar. I've had to go down to the end of the bar on more than one occasion and break up a riveting conversation just so that I can get a beer. Not good
2nd floor
The second floor has proper tables for the food service. I have never tried the food here so I can't comment. One thing I will say is that the 2nd floor really looks like someone's dining room rather than a restaurant. I suppose this is neither good nor bad, but merely an observation
3rd floor
The 3rd floor is the rooftop area, which features some more tables should you choose to enjoy your food outside. There's also a bar up here with a limited selection, but if you order a beer they don't have, they'll just run downstairs and get it. Ok, well not run, but you'll get your beer in 5-10 mins.
The view is as nice as you'd expect for a 3rd story downtown Jersey City brownstone. It won't drop any panties, but it's a breath of fresh air (literally and figuratively) from other bars. The upstairs bar can get quite crowded since it's small, and if you're not ordering food then you normally don't get to sit at the tables, which sucks.
Overall
Iron Monkey is certainly different - I'll give them that. However, with the cramped space, poor service, and the hike just to get to the roof, I often leave with more of a negative experience than I should. 2 stars, but a simple retraining for their bartenders could go a long way.
Pros:
pretty good selection of beers
rooftop bar is something unique for the area
Cons:
subpar service
pricey beers
cramped walking areas
getting to the roof is a good cardio workout -

A happening Jersey City establishment with a relatively young crowd.
A bar on the first floor (the bartender was very friendly when I was there), live music on the second floor, as well as a rooftop above it all (though sadly, I've never personally gotten up to the roof- yet!).
I like this place! -

Austin, TX
A friend of mine lives in the Paulus Hook area so we came here for late dinner and drinks on a Friday before going to the Sands Casino in PA. The service was very attentive and I was pleasantly surprised by their beer selection. Only drawback was the food (at least what I ordered.) When I asked the waiter what was good on the menu, he emphatically proclaimed "The pasta here is bangin' and it comes with big ass shrimps" I took another look at the menu and the pasta said it came with Italian sausage, not shrimp (that should've been my first clue)
Other than the poor entree selection, I think it was a great spot to meet up friends for drinks within that area of JC. If I get a second go at this place and I'm on an empty stomach, I'll try a burger. -

Jersey City, NJ
This place's strong suit is that it has a massive beer selection. It has to be more extensive than any other place in Jersey City. They have a large amount on tap, and ten times that in bottles. If you are a beer aficionado, I would go here just so that you can get those odd varieties that you can't find anywhere else, or to try new ones.
The food was pretty good. I got buffalo wings, and I enjoyed them. Not the best I have ever had, but good for the NYC area. They had ranch that I could substitute for the blue cheese dressing, which is a plus for me. We ordered some french fries, and it was a huge plate. They were pretty good too.
My wife got some nachos. They were the chili-cheese type, and she seemed to enjoy them.
Both of the beers that I got were fantastic. I got a Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA and it went great with the wings. I also got a Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron, which was very distinctive and delicious. It reminded me of a red wine.
Service was great! -
Review from Sara E.
I've been to the Iron Monkey three times, but there's a caveat: it was never the first stop on the bar crawl / of the evening. (Read: I was pretty tipsy by the time I got there.)
Always sat on the roof because, well, I love me some roof deck. Always sat in the southeast corner because it gives you a nice view of the entire roof, plus you can see some of the Manhattan skyline, AND if you ride your bike there from another bar and forget to bring your lock, you can glance over the railing and see your ride is still there.
The food has been consistently good, and I think I've complained about beer maybe once in my lifetime (this not being that time). However, the service was
so
slow.
It was painful. Like pulling teeth-painful.
Bottom line: even on the emptiest of nights, the service act like you're not there. And when they do acknowledge you, it's with good-natured surprise like, "Oh! A customer! How cute - what are you doing here?" -

So at first - this bar is a no frills barstaurant. Three levels...top floor being the roof. What this bar stands out against the others is the extensive beer list. It is awesome!
Tons of different beers i've never heard of and it wasn't expensive. They also have a special $3 shot...that promises to be good and strong. Plus the staff are not just very helpful...but very friendly and just really cool.
All in all i had a really good time there - and wasn't expecting much. Pretty good right? -
Review from Mike D.
After briefly considering living in JC, I figured I would stop here to test out my possible future neighborhood bar. I really like this place. Although I didn't try the food, the visit was super-comfortable. The beer selection is superb; the space, a combination of a local dive, with enough charm to raise it up a notch. I didn't try the roof deck, but could imagine how great it would be on a warmer day with amazing views of the NYC skyline. Although our relationship was short, I will long to return to the Iron Monkey.

So, the roof collapsed. Thank the lord I was not on said roof when collapsing. But now, that said roof is teeny - and I liked said roof when it was larger.
Amazing beer selection, Asian Chicken wrap was DELICIOUS. Staff was as always was awesome.

Manhattan, NY
Came here last night for Happy Hour and was pleasantly surprised! Had $1 beer specials from 7-8 with a Belgium beer which i really liked! Yes it was light but still tasty. Also had $1 spicy popcorn which was buttery and spicy..mmm..nice to munch on. My friend enjoyed her .25 cent wings, and I enjoyed her fries (some of the best ones ive had in a while). Best part about this place (aside from our incredibly nice server) was the ranch dressing that came with the wings..wow...yum! Also had a seabreeze which I did not really like, but I must say that for a HH special, the bartender was VERY generous with the alcohol.
Will definitely return to this place, especially when it gets warmer and can sit on the roof. -
Review from Peter K.
I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, but last night ruined it and here is why.
I have been here twice, once for their Thursday Meet the Brewers and on a Friday. Meet the Brewers is a great idea. There are 5 or 6 varieties from the brewery on tap and a brewer rep is there if you have any questions. It is great and you get to try them all if you have time. Nice and simple.
Now for the bad news. They have 4 menus. A clipboard, a red binder, a black binder that weighs 10 pounds and online. Let us just say there are between 150-200 beers on the list. I went 1 for 9 with one they actually had. Even their "current" on tap list was outdated and empty. I did not even go for the obscure brands. It took a half an hour to get my first beer. Then I finally was just giving the poor waitress a list of 2 or 3 at a time to find me something.
Anyone could have a huge beer and wine menu, but this one was filled with ghosts. I have been to dozens of bars and restaurants that have extensive lists and maybe there was one or two they were out of, but it should not take 30 minutes to pick a damn beer. I felt so bad for the poor waitress, because each time I would order she would have to walk back and forth checking if the beer I wanted was in stock.
Avoid the garbage menus and just ask if they have a certain brand or type in stock. This might be a bit poncy, but upgrade to some sort of tablet device and just put what your inventory is on that. That is what most notable wine list restaurants are doing and if you want to have an expansive list it is the only way to keep your beer snob customers.
I hope this review does not ruin it for most of you, go for a Meet the Brewer night that is worth it. The prices are also very good. -

We saw the place walking by on a Saturday morning and looked nice from the street (the rooftop deck). We got upstairs around 10 a.m., got 2 seats outside, and started in with some Mimosas. The weather was great, a decent view, you're outside, and they had Jamaican music playing in the background. Felt like I was not in Jersey City. The food is good, the beer better, and the service is the best. Ask for Mike. He went above and beyond in service!

just read the prior review and I feel I have to clarify. As a beer geek I chase special tappings and when a very unique beer that has averaged 20 minutes on tap before kicking in both NJ and NY is organized I actually think it's a good thing. You know to get there early and it was done quite fair.
As far as Iron Monkey in general, the food is great. I love the burgers and spicy fries and could eat their calamari all day. Great beer list keeps me coming back.
Cheers to the guys there. Always a great time! -

The GOOD: The food is awesome, the beer selection is amazing and they have carry-out - always a plus.
The BAD: I've been here 2 or 3 times and the staff has been unhelpful and for the most part, knowledgeable about... most things.
The waitstaff tends to take their time, and seem to do more socializing which each other then paying attention to their patrons needs. Not to mention, one time we went, and after being seated for a good 15-20 minutes waiting for our server, we requested carry-out, and they told us they stop filling handles at 10 PM. It was 10:05, but our server would not make an exception, even though we had been waiting for a while.
Go for the beer, but not if you're in a rush. -

who can say they've seen a bartender that was hired a week ago, spoken to by the manager about having better communication skills, putting out the tickets with the drinks, and then just suddenly quit without a word? I definitely can as I witness this all happen within a pint of beer. As for the bartender that took over after him, I really wish she had been the bartender the entire time (she's another manager there too). Girl bartender/manager, if you're reading this, hit me up!
Oh ya, great beer selection, too. -

Great pub fare and excellent beer selection. Enjoyed a few Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin's which they had on draft! Their wings were delicious. Great flavor and not too saucy. Also really enjoyed their sliders which truly tasted like mini-"gourmet" burgers...not your typical White Castle-ish wafers. The seasoning on the spicy fries was nice but I wish the fries were a bit crispier (note to self order them well done next time).
It was a gorgeous night out so we sat on the roof-top bar. Although the down stairs bar also appeared to have a good vibe. The staff was accommodating, friendly and attentive.
I'd definitely go back if I were in the area. -

I usually have a great time here and enjoy the large beer selection, but this weekend there were few beers I would order again. One bartender, ben, was really uninformed about the beers and liquors. He was quite rude too. The other bartender was amazing and we only ordered from her. Bring back innus & gunn and better beers. Also, I wish they would rebuild the rooftop. The bar up there used to be amazing but it is overcrowded now due to the small space.

Review from Jon S.
New York, NY
Where do I begin? This has been a go-to after work spot for awhile, but it's just gone down the tubes as of late. First, they have a roof deck that they closed half of (permanently) for some unknown reason, which makes it more crowded up there.
The kicker comes from the last time that I was there with some guys from work. We ordered some beers, nothing fancy. I think that they brewed the beer to order! We were waiting in the neighborhood of 30 minutes just to get 7 beers or so. Apparently they had to be brought up from downstairs or something??? News flash: we ALL came from downstairs! We're not exactly at the top of the Empire State Building folks! It's THREE FLIGHTS which takes, what, about 30-60 seconds per flight (if you're being careful not to spill the beers). So "travel time" is not a valid excuse in my book.
Also, you'd think that a multi-level place such as this would have a dumbwaiter, making it even less likely for there to be a problem physically transporting the drinks.
It's truly sad, this place has a good selection of beer (can anyone say Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, my fav?) and decent food. But the service is simply inexcusable. I'll probably be back, since I'm a glutton for punishment, but certainly no time soon.
PS - I was with a colleague from India the last time I was here - we partly tipped in rupees just to show how bad we thought the service was. -

The Monkey's key boasts are the great amount of beers available ($1.50 PBR cans are a steal and are not advertised anywhere but in the menu) and its rooftop bar.
Haven't had much of their food except for a burger (which was good) but I'd certainly go for a beer or 5.
Another huge plus is they sell growlers of any beer they have on tap (which is excellent since thats usually only something you can find at a microbrewery). -

Williamsburg - North Side, Brooklyn, NY
Decent food, horrendous service. Not only were we asked to wait over twenty minutes for a table when some half drunken frat boys walk in; sneak up and take the table without any repercussion. We were then forced to wait an additional 10 minutes. After a 30 minute wait at which point we were ready to leave, we get escorted to a four top table. Which we are later asked to move from so they can split the two. The manger rudely proceeds to sit a table approximately at elbow distance from us to only return five minutes later to take their order completely ignoring us. They received their drinks before we had ever been approached by anyone. Although we later did have two desperate servers try and take our order, minutes from each other. Absolutely NO organization or respect for their clients. But hey decent beer selection. Needless to say I will NOT be spending my money here ever again!!

Most extensive beer menu I've seen in Jersey City. (I think they have more than the biergarten?) Rooftop bar in a relatively quiet part of town. Already Iron Monkey has two strong thumbs up from me.
Plus, the food that I've had has been great. The balsamic chicken was moist and a great portion size, and is definitely my favorite thing on the menu.
The service is definitely so-so, but everything else about the place is so great that it's not worth skipping just because of that. -
Review from Andrew D.
The Iron Monkey is about 5 blocks from my new apartment. So far, I'm really impressed. The beer selection is quite impressive, and the food is pretty good, for the price. I recommend the spicy fries if you're going to have such things. The beer prices can be a little high, but they're not unreasonable really. A typical craft brew pint will run about $6 or $7. They have a happy hour special that is $1 off drafts from 4-8pm.
Service is generally friendly, but can get slow or uneven when they're busy. The music in the 2nd floor dining room is stuck on a satellite radio station from 1993... which is fine, but somewhat strange at times. The bar area on the 1st floor can get a little cramped, but hey... it's just a way to get friendlier.
I can't wait for the weather to improve so I can enjoy the rooftop. Yes, drinking under the stars is a great pleasure of mine.Listed in: Beer Pilgrimages

Jersey City, NJ
I very rarely hand out five-star reviews, but this place deserves it solely on the beer selection. They have about anything you could ever desire on tap, and if they don't, then they have a bottle. Just choose something from the "beer bible" and you won't be disappointed. If you are awash in a sea of malty indecision, they will bring out a tasting flight to help you make up your mind. And, if you're too lazy to get off your duff and walk to the Monkey, they will actually deliver beer in a growler to you.
Try to go on a weekend afternoon or early evening. And, try to get a table upstairs, the wait isn't usually that bad. The food is pretty good (I've had the burger and the fuji apple salad), and the spicy fries / spicy truffled popcorn are killer.
I can't wait until it's warm enough to drink on the roof. I'm going to get so fat this summer from drinking all of this yummy beer. -

- Not worth it at all!! The food is terrible for its price
- $5 mashed potatoes---no gravy!!!
- Mac n cheese---i would assume that people who enjoy cheese and bacon would get this dish....but i need at least some veggies in my meal!! Also, the bacon is soggy...gross...bits are yummier
- All their dishes are too overpriced for the quality....then again its mainly a bar
