I too can attest to the knowledge of the staff. They're extremely helpful and can provide valid input on every product on the shelf. The hours are a bit out of my comfort level due to work, but it's definitely a place to set time aside for when having bike related issues.
Price is a bit on the up, but I've never had to replace or return any item purchased from here, and i treat my bike like a real PoS.
The most memorable instance at this shop was when an idling car literally caught fire just outside the front door; all while the passenger smoked inside. I found the entire scenario to be quite ironic. -

I want to like this place. I really do. It's in my neighborhood and has decent prices. But every time I take my bike in for even the smallest thing, they jack it up somewhere else.
Example: took my bike in because I had a hole in my tire tube. They had to take off my back bike rack to replace the tube and a few broken spokes. No problem. When they put the rack back on, they didn't secure it well enough. The next day I'm riding home from work (8 miles) and my sidebag starts hitting against the spokes and wheel because one of the rack bolts came out.
I took that in to get fixed. Nicely, they fixed it for free. But it was then out of tru (obviously) and they did nothing for that.
This is a typical "we'll fix one problem and screw up something else so you have to come back" type situation. Bummer. These boys know how to ride, but they don't know how to fix bikes. -

The guys working here are soo great! they know what they are talking about, and don't try to sell you a bike/accessories that doesn't work for YOU.
My partner & I spent about 5 hours in here trying & picking a new bike for her. All four of the guys in there hung in there with us while Ali went back and forth between bikes.
When I was in last week they remembered Ali & the bike we bought, asking me how she liked her new fixie & if she survived the wind! -

Great shop, especially for the location. i bought tubes and patches here, that's about it, but the staff was really friendly and not your typical bike snobs that would usually work at a shop. sometime soon ill come in and get my bike a tune up or possibly in the future replace some parts. they have a decent selection of bikes for sale, all at decent prices for the quality and styles. they defiantly have a lot of good parts too, but i don't need them right now, but i know where to go when i do!

Great, albeit small shop. Employees are very knowledgable and helpful.
They aren't going to be the cheapest option but you'll get the best value for the dollars. -

My wife bought a bike here and had a baby seat installed on the bike. She had taken the baby seat off to ride on her own, and then had a spot of trouble getting the seat back on. She brought the bike and seat to the store and the manager put it back on for her.
Outstanding service and selection. Staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They gave pointers on how to safely lock up the bike, which routes are best for specific neighborhoods, etc. Would go here no questions asked for future bike and bike-related purchases. -

this is a great bike shop. the store isn't huge, but i've stopped in here before when i desperately needed to air up some tires, and when i went helmet shopping. i wanted a very specific helmet, and this was the only place i found that was able to get it for me. also, the staff here is always very helpful and courteous. they gladly talk me through any questions, and i've seen them treat all customers that way- even young kids that come in the door.
good shop, good staff, good hours. -
Review from Jackie M.
I had some trouble with my tire valves and couldn't figure out why, and in a panic called up the experts if I could come in the store and help me out. Steve was nice enough to check out the pump, fixed it, explained the reason, and ended up re-inflating my tires, as I ended up deflating them in the process. I asked him what I owed, and didn't charge me anything. I inquired about upgrading my seat, and he adjusted the angle to see if that will improve my ride.
These guys are really cool and knowledgeable and they recently expanded another section of the store. Awesome local business that knows what they are doing. The bikes I saw are absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth a look, even if you're just window shopping. -

(Full disclosure my brother works here). I love this shop, it's part of the reason I wanted my brother to work here when he moved from Ark. to Chicago. I knew he would get along with the guys who work at Iron, because he is nice hardworking guy, and so are the guys at Iron.
There is not an iota of Bike Shop snobbery at this place, even though you can get a custom carbon or Ti frame from them with full Sram red componets. They will care for the person who comes in with their beater commuter bike as much as customers shopping for higher end bikes. They all have years of experience. I can't recommend this place enough. -

Really disappointed in my tune up. First problem - I was charged a storage fee without being told about it in advance - yes I left the bike there too long but I should have been called and told that this will happen. Second fail - when I asked the service manager about it he said that he couldn't do anything about it although he didn't understand it either and the owners were not around.
Final and MOST frustrating problem, after being told that my bike was ready and spending over $200 in parts, labor and storage fees I couldn't shift the front gears. How could this have been overlooked? I had to spend another couple of hours while the techs tried to fix the problem... and in the end did not. #fail I will not be back.Comment from Brandon E. of Iron Cycles 3/22/2011

Took my old 11 year-old Cannondale in for a repair and tune-up. They did an on-the-spot assessment of the bike, pointed out some problems with it, and gave an estimate for the total.
One week later, as promised, they called to let me know it was ready.
Everything's working wonderfully; they gave me some tips about maintenance issues and couldn't have been a friendlier bunch of guys.
Absolutely ZERO attitude that you might find in a shop that carries some pretty intimidatingly nice bikes.
Looks like they'll take care of everyone; from the most ancient rusted Huffy to the slickest new ones out there.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I can't believe all of the 5 star ratings!
I went in to ask about a tune up when they first opened, and the dolt behind the counter was like "Uh...for what bike?". I was standing there with my bike. I referenced it when I asked. I pointed to it and said "how much for a tune up for this bike", and that was his reply, with a look of total idiocy on his face. When he finally got that it was the bike I was standing there with, he said "Uh...I'm not sure. Fifty? Maybe a hundred. Depends. Do you want a tune up?"
No. I asked for a tune up because I wanted my rims replaced.
I'll go back again and look around, because it seems like a nice shop (and it's close to home) but the sheer stupidity was enough to make me sad and not care how great they are. Hopefully the guy I talked to will be sober, or less stupid, or not there the next time. -

Best bike shop in the city! The guys there are super nice and laid back. They know their stuff when it comes to bikes and bike repairs.
I have been in here several times now for minor repairs and they are always willing to stop what they are working on to help you out if you are short on time. I even showed up before they opened once and the owner was inside. He opened up about an hour early so I could get a quick repair and get my ride in early that morning. I won't go anywhere else from now on for my repairs and biking purchases. -

Cool they really are.
Laid back, hard working, highly intuitive and knowledgeable about all things bikes and life and happiness.
They fixed the beast which transports my heavy ass throughout the city streets.
They brought new life and sparkle.
They helped me choose the proper path of rejuvenation and in the end, the beast of burden she rides again with speed, grace and smoothness that other beasts with wheels now envy.
great add to the neighborhood. -

Seeing as I am bicycle illiterate, I left it to these fella's to tune up my ancient hunk of metal. Came in here with a groupon and left with a smile. They even let me keep my bike there a couple days more than expected with no storage fee. Upon leaving i went ahead and purchased a new bike lock which they insisted on installing immediately, again, cost-free. These folks are super laid back and very knowledgeable. Couldn't ask for better service.. just wish I didn't move across down. Wah.

First contact: Matt.
I came round for an inner tube adapter, he handed it to me, then made to go on about his business. I asked how much the part would cost. With a straight face, he replied, 'That will be, um, zero dollars.' He then went on to introduce himself.
Now, I relay this bit of information not to have you swarm over for free stuff, but to illustrate how little gestures can make big impressions.
I was impressed.
It's worth noting that the bikes and accessories for sale at Iron Cycles lean slightly towards the upmarket, but they will happily work with YOUR bike. They also seem very open to working on getting what you need.
Second visit: Brandon.
Recently I decided to bring my bike in for a tune-up. Again, that easy, amicable demeanour. No pressure, no attitude. Only when I asked about replacing tyres and grips did he make any recommendations. $75 would buy a full tune-up and a cleaning. Tyres and grips would be extra, of course.
Two days later, my bike was ready for pickup. It looked and felt almost virginal, they had done such a nice job. In fact, the front derailleur, whose permanent position in third gear I'd grown resigned to was now revisiting first and second without complaint. Everyone else had declared it would never happen. I gathered that a third guy named Chip was responsible for this modern miracle.
These guys, lemme tell ya.
A couple of weeks later I stopped in to have my brakes tightened. (Lots of sudden hard stops, no thanks to numbskulls who think the rule of looking both ways before crossing the street is satisfied by a glance at their feet and another at their phone ... and don't get me started about ignorant motorists/cyclists.) Matt happened to be free and made the adjustments in minutes.
Then we hung out, chugging beers, shooting the breeze and laughing it up. (No, we didn't. But I'm still a fan of the Iron Cycles team.)
Yeah, I am impressed. Bigly. -

Brought my Schwinn in for a tune up and a new inner tube, bike was ready a day early and rode great, price was also very fair too, about average or a little less than most shops I called. Glad it is so close to home and will definitely take my bike there for all its needs!

Review from Steven M.
Iron cycles is the best bike shop I have ever been in, period.
Before I moved to the Midwest, I was really into biking and consequently spent a lot of time and money in bike stores. The problem is that so many shops are either too cool for school and treat almost all their customers like they are beneath them or they operate on a volume mart basis and just churn and burn through the merchandise without having any knowledge of what they are selling or any care that the customer is getting what they need. And they wonder why bikers simply buy stuff on line.
Iron Cycles, by contrast, is simply a cool shop with super cool owners who know and LOVE the craft of building and repairing bikes. And unlike other places, they seem to equally appreciate road bikes and mountain bikes (in California or Oregon that would be like dogs and cats living together, or more regionally appropriately, it would be like being fans of both the Sox AND the Cubs). Seriously, if this place opened up in California and maintained its charm and focus, they'd be inundated with cyclists bringing them their business.
I needed to perform some upgrades to my old Merlin titanium hardtail that hadn't been ridden much in the last couple years. Matt, one of the owners, took a TON of time to map out a couple different ways I could build it out. He came up with some great ideas and really had some creative suggestions with how to make the bike perform and look its best. When I got the bike back, all I can say is WOW. It looks amazing and is performing better than it ever has. You can tell by the workmanship the amount of time, attention to detail and passion that they put into the bike. They even took time to painstakingly brush out some scuff marks on the frame which I think says a lot about their approach.
Iron Cycles is in a cozy space and may not have several thousand square feet of shopping space, but I suspect they can get their hands on any bike gear you need. Plus, it makes for a cool place to stop by and just rap about bikes and biking or drool over the high end machines they have on display.
A highly recommended place to satisfy all your biking needs whether you're a newbie, hardcore biker, commuter or whatever. -

Bike shops intimidate me. Period. I've been to shops in Chicago and Evanston who will fix your bike while sneering the whole time.
I called ahead because I knew my fix might be "below" most serious shops (and they are a serious shop). Matt was very sweet and told me to definitely come in with our old jogging stroller, he'd help me figure it out. It runs on bike tires, the manufacturer had sent a replacement tire that didn't match the tread on the old tires, etc.
I nervously brought my 3 year old with me. She isn't shy, nor quiet, nor still. The guys saw me coming and immediately went for the door to help me with my rig. They chatted with my daughter, made us feel at ease, and had the tires rotated and fixed in 5 minutes. Because it was such a quick fix, they didn't even want to charge me but I made them take money just out of gratitude for their efficiency, customer service and skill.
I love these guys and happen to be in the market for a new bike. You can bet that I'll be back and I'm recommending them to all my biking pals, especially those with kids! -

YAY! Finally, a bike shop easily accessible from Albany Park.
When we first stopped by, we got excellent customer service. In addition to needing a tune-up, my road bike needed some other work, too. Matt worked with me to make sure my bike was in tip-top shape for the work that I could afford to have done at the time. I came home with a sparkly clean drive train, a new tire, and a big smile on my face after taking it for one of the smoothest rides I've had since buying the bike. Super quick turnaround, too, especially after I had to cancel my original scheduled time to bring it in.
My husband took his road bike there a couple weeks later and had the same experience: amazing and thorough work, excellent customer service, and the bike is running like new.
My "city bike" is in for service now, having not taken it in for work since I bought it (12 years ago). I can't wait to see how it rides when I get it back!
The only wrinkle, if I had to mention one, is that there isn't much equipment in stock, but they can order just about anything, and from what I can tell it arrives quickly. My neighbor ordered a Burley pet trailer from them. I'll be happy to do my browsing for panniers and the like at Kozy's, then come to Iron Cycles with my order. -

I'd say my bicycle knowledge is fairly standard for someone who would identify themselves as a cyclist for the past few years. That being said, I can still get intimidated when walking in to my local LBS due to the less than friendly attitudes of some of the to-cool-for-you employees.
I got the complete opposite vibe walking in to this place, I was greeted with a smile and the folks were friendly. I came in for a budget single speed conversion on an old frame and wheel set, and that's what I got. Matt sat down and took the time to help me find quality parts at price that kept my wallet in mind. If I didn't understand something, it was explained clearly. If a suggestion for a different part was made, it was for my best interest and comfort for the type of riding I was looking to do. A date was given for completion, and it was met. The work done was quality, and I'm happy to say I took it on a joy-ride right for a few hours right out of the store with everything working smoothly.
There's no doubt I'll be bringing my other bikes in here for service, and when the time comes for a new one, I'll be sure to hop on that state-of-the-art looking bike fitting set-up. I'm recommending this one to all my friends. -

What a great day!
My last bike was one I had bought in high school and had fallen into bad, bad disrepair. So much so that when I moved 2 years ago, I didn't even bother taking it out of the bike room and bringing it with me. So I finally decided it was time to get a bike because I felt like a tool hopping in the car and driving the few blocks to the grocery store because it would take "too long" to walk there.
I am not a biker by any means, so I have to say I was a little nervous to walk into a shop and throw myself on their mercy, but I was very well taken care of. When I walked in I let them know exactly what I wanted - something simple and easy to maintain that is good for running errands and possibly riding along the lakefront every now and then. Brandon quickly recommended the Torker U-district - single speed (very little can break or need adjusted), all steel (durable), flat black paint (doesn't draw a lot of attention when locked up outside my Blockbuster), and a reasonable price.
They had one in the store that was the right size for me and, after adjusting the seat a bit, let me take it out for a test ride up and down the block. To me, it felt great. My last bike was 500lbs and rusty, so riding this made me ecstatic. When I came back from the test ride I was sold. Then Matt came over, took some measurements off of me, made some adjustments on the bike (that included sawing off part of the handlebars!), and then had me ride it again.
Heaven! And I thought it was good before! This just goes to show me that these guys are a great bike-shop for beginners. They could have just as easily let me walk out of there with the bike without making any adjustments and I never would have known the difference, but they took the time to explain what they were doing and why there were doing it which, in my book, makes all the difference.
I also left with a lock and helmet, but before I left they took the time to attach the lock holder to the bike and fit my helmet. Matt even said that if I had any questions about the registration for the lock to call and he could walk me through it! So now I've got a great new bike, a free tune-up every year (great bonus!), and the accessories I need to keep it and me safe. -

With the recent economic downturn, places like Pep Boys have seen great gains from folks who would rather repair their cars than buy a new one. Sooner or later, someone smart, like these guys, would realize that fixing and upgrading your current bike is more attractive to most than buying a new bike. Rather than rent a ton of real estate, Iron Cycles is located in a small below grade shop on a fugly stretch of Montrose Avenue. However, it is only a couple of blocks from Horner Park, the river and my home.
I brought my 1992 cheapo Trek into Iron Cycles needing a repair. I fully expected to hear that my bike was f'd and I needed to buy a new one. Instead, they told me that it would only cost around $30 to fix total and the tech made my bike rideable until the part came in. Wow, real customer service! Now if I only knew a car mechanic this honest... -

Excellent service, they were busy but someone checked in with me quickly and helped me get what I need and then gave me a reasonable quote on the repair.
They had my bike fixed in 15 minutes. The owner checked in to make sure I had everything I needed.
They were great at trouble-shooting the problem, explained why I was getting repeated flats and what needed to be done.
Really great, really helpful, and I felt comfortable, even though I'm a complete bike idiot.
And it's in my neighborhood which rocks. -

Awesome! The word that describes this bike shop. Best customer service out of all bike shops in Chicago!
I heard about this place from a friend who was getting his custom fixie bike put together. I was tired of my 2007 KHS road bike and I wanted something that was unique to me. So I scheduled a fit and I worked with Matt to figure out my dimensions. I told him the concept of what I was looking for; white carbon fiber, with red wheels, and bull handle bars. He is very knowledgeable and he proposed different parts that would go together, he walked me through every item we purchased and showed me companies of where to buy parts.
It took about 3 weeks to finish the project and they were keeping me up to date on the progress. After the end of it all, the bike looked absolutely beautiful. They paid attention to every detail; it's really a work of art. It's very light, I didn't actually weigh it but it's very light. Due to the custom fit, the bike fits me perfectly and it handles really well on the road. Even though its only single speed, it is ridiculously fast and responsive.
I highly recommend this shop as they are knowledgeable, professional, and they treat every bike as if it were their own. -

I called Iron Cycles about two weeks ago looking for a vintage Italian part (Italian threaded freewheel). It's not something that's typically lying around a bike shop these days. Any way, of all the shops I called, Iron Cycles was the only shop who offered to help find one.
Wether we find the part or not is beside the point--I was pleased that they offered to help even though there was likely little or no money in it for them. I'll happily do business with them in the future. -

Inteligente! Fix bikes in a timely fashion, as promised within dollar value assigned in estimate. Bring your old steel rig here...or your high end machine. I personally like that the owner and wrenches race what they sell...much easier to trust someone who has learned from experience. Good hours too.

Absolutely awesome. I've been to so many shops around Chicagoland and Iron Cycles by far has some of the best service. Watching Matt in action is something to behold. He works fast but is precise. He also didn't hesitate to let me step back there to see what he was doing.
This place has no attitude. While I was waiting for my bike I overheard them helping other customers and they gave sound advice to everyone that came in. No pushiness whatsoever.
This place is a little out of the way but if I ever need anything serious done to my bike this is the shop I will go to. -

Sometimes I go in here, not needing anything at all, just to pick up something and support them. Seriously the nicest guys I've met. I've had a fitting here, bought a bike for my son, had a tune up, and picked up random tubes and cleaning supplies and each time I visited I was treated with respect and never talked down to. I couldn't have asked for a better bike shop in the neighborhood. I had a gear shifter issue and they told me to come right in. The fix only took 15 minutes and didn't break the bank. They also had some affordable bikes in the shop - so I know where I'm headed to get my new bike. It was also refreshing that they didn't make you feel like an idiot or push you to buy things you didn't need.

After a week of hell with my bike and two tire tubes and a new tire later (and shoddy work and customer service at a large sporting equipment chain), I found myself with ANOTHER flat tire as I was leaving work. So I came back inside and checked yelp for a shop that was close and found Iron Cycles.
I was frustrated with lugging my bike on to that stupid bus rack thing, but felt much better when I got to the shop and was greeted by two very nice and knowledgeable guys. One seemed new, but knew what he was talking about and set me up with a new tire and tube. The other guy working there helped me with my seat post...in fact I'm going in to pick up my new one today. He asked where I bought my bike and when I told him I got it in Austin, Texas he told me he used to live there and we bonded a bit over that. He also knew the shop where I bought my bike, so that was kind of fun.
The service was good and quick, the prices were reasonable and I will be returning for future bike needs. -

Over the past few years, Iron Cycles has become my go to shop.
The guys at the shop welcome you, but won't pester you if you are just looking around.
Confession time...I bought a bike online. Got a decent price but the bike needed plenty of tuning upon arrival. I took the bike to IC, Brandon and his staff spent around 45 minutes working on the front derailleur. The bike now runs great. The price for the repair was beyond reasonable. I actually felt the need to pay more. Lesson learned, support your LBS and don't chase deals online.
These guys are great, I even brought in my magnetic trainer for repairs. -

No tude, cool dudes. I love when I am taken seriously as a customer who is willing to spend money and not treated as an idiot for asking basic questions. We're not all bike nerds and some of us (me) are idiots who ask LOTS of silly questions!
Also, the free tuneup when you purchase a bike is amazing.. best customer service I've ever experienced at a sports store. Well done! :) -

Bought my first bike in nearly 15 years from this place. Recommended by a friend, I had to at least check it out. This was the 3rd bike shop I visited and Matt was friendly and explained the differences between the bikes and what I was paying for. Personally, I'm not a crazy biker, but needed one for a triathlon. I spent more than I wanted to, but left feeling good about my choice.
Not too much negotiating with them, but they include lifetime tune-ups when you buy a bike which will end up saving me some money in the long term. Plus they are not douches! Everyone that works here is nice and I didn't feel as though my presence and lack of knowledge was a burden or a reason to feel embarrased. Matt & Co. asked me some questions and then helped me pick a bike that I liked. No pressure. Highly recommended! -

Super friendly guys and welcoming to all level of riders (beginners to expert). My first run in with them was at Bike the Drive last year when I'd blown a tire, then turned around and over inflated and blew my spare. One of the guys affiliated with the shop was nice enough to pull over and give us his spare...we didn't even ask, he offered it up and wouldn't take any money for it. Since then I've been in the shop to check it out and buy some gear. The staff was super cool. I've never had my bike worked on there (since I have a primary bike shop) but I can tell these guys would do a bang up job. Stop in and check them out.
