    What a great spot!

We stumbled on this pub drawn into the looks from the outside. Clean looking pub that is connected to an older looking building. Very appealing to the eye.

We were looking for some late lunch and a beer or two and were not disappointed. I ordered the "Beef Dipper" that included a horseradish aioli. The sandwich coupled with the beef dip was awesome. Great amount of "saltiness" and with the fries I left very full. There was also a great selection of beers on tap.

Highly recommended for a quick bite and a beer!

After a 90 minute ferry ride, checking into our hotel and a few minutes to catch our breath, everyone in our little group was famished. We walked down Government St. to find a place to eat when we stumbled upon Irish Times. I pointed it out because it was one of my favorite bars in Savannah GA, (That is not longer known as,) but it had a great name to start with. The moment I walked in I knew I was going to like this place. It had the feel of and Irish pub and a restaurant at the same time, great woodwork every where and just a classy Irish feel.

As a bit of a beer connoisseur I first looked at the draft menu, great local selections on tap and I went with Vancouver Island Piper's Pale Ale. And when in Rome; I ordered the Shepherd's Pie for lunch. It had ground lamb and beef, sweet peas, carrot, onion gravy with whipped yukon gold potato and was so amazing. Great lunch for a fall day!

KILTS-A-PLENTY!!!  If the leprechan inside ya be needin a wee settlin', get yer self a pint or two at this authentic pub.  Tables set in every nook and cranny, create cosy spots to rest yer weary feet or converse all secret like in planning tomorrow's adventures.  But the long table is big enough to invite all your mates, and sing along with the decidedly un-Irish music played while I was there.

The bar will keep you drowned in choices, all of which blend perfectly with the menu.

You won't regret this culinary trip back to the land of potatoes, and might even decide that what you have found is an edible pot-o-gold!

This is my favourite pub of all time. It has everything you could want - it's super warm and cozy in the winter-time and has an outstanding patio in the summertime. The staff are always super friendly (and often cute) and the food is always great, the drinks are wonderful (especially around Christmastime when they have all their holiday themed sparkling martini's (droooool). They always have wicked live music, lots of TV's for the games...perfect. Prices are a little higher than some other pubs, but I'm willing to pay it for this place. Check it out, I insist. This company also owns the Bard and Banker and the Penny Farthing, which are both good as well, but this is the best.
This place is exactly what you want an Irish Pub to be, and its a wicked place for a great meal, drinks and dancing with friends.
    Go! Enjoy!

Wow, this place was such a pleasant surprise.  Saw it while walking down Government Street during lunchtime and noted what a nice crowd was eating outside the place and how good their food looked.  So we booked a table on OpenTable for dinner and were in for a treat.

We split a charcuterie and cheese plate that was really terrific.  The cheeses were a local Vancouver Island brie, a Guinness Stout cheddar and a Quebec blue.  The meats were two different salamis and something between a ham and a salami.  These came with some goody bread, terrific whole grain mustard, delicious sweet gherkin pickles and tasty, HUGE olives in a mild chili sauce.  Scarfed it all down happily with a Tuesday night $5 pint of Guinness stout.

I had a very original salad composed of fresh and crisp local greens, beets, carrots, cherry tomatoes, perfectly grilled chicken and brie in a sweet basil vinaigrette.  After several days of vacation food - all delicious but not exactly healthy - I was craving this. It hit the spot.  My travel companion had what we in the states call a French dip sandwich, with a very good local Cheddar cheese melted inside.  Also, very good, as were the perfect sweet potato fries with which it was served (in a sweet curry mayonnaise which was a revelation).

Our server, Pam, was very sweet and extremely competent, to boot.  Really liked this place a lot and would highly recommend it to anyone living in or visiting lovely Victoria!

Call me a pig if you want to, but cute waitresses all over the place, awesome selection of beer, and decent food.  If you want a gourmet meal or an authentic Irish meal, go someplace else.

Look at it this way.  If you want Irish food, go to Ireland.  If you want good Mexican food, go to Mexico or Southern California.  If you want to have a few pints with food on the side in Victoria, definitely go to Irish Times.

Based upon a friend's write-up of Irish Times, I was made known of this place. It is on the main stretch of Government Street in downtown Victoria. This is a cozy Irish pub that is rustic. Interior is dark which makes the place more intimate feeling.

Stopped by for lunchtime fare. I got a table right by the window. Nice spot for watching the goings on of the street. Food is generally pub fare of sandwiches, salads, pizzas, burgers and Irish classics. I decided on the lunch special ($9.99) which was a steak and guinness pot pie with a emerald (side) salad for that day.

As it is a pub, of course there is a large drink selection. They have many domestic beers here that are locally brewed in Victoria along with some non-local Canadian, Irish and European beers. Though no American brews. Not sure why considering the short proximity.

The draft Vancouver Island Spyhopper Honey Brown Ale ($6.60) was nice. It was smooth as described. A nice uncomplicated brew, though a bit pricey. As for the food, I liked the steak and guinness pot pie. Very good option on a rainy day. Tasted like a hearty Irish stew underneath the puff top. The salad was nicely prepared, though the dressing was a little too unassuming. Hard to taste. Though it was nice to have the salad to balance the heaviness of the pot pie and beer combo.

The Irish folk music soundtrack playing in the background was very enjoyable. It definitely sets the tone of spot as a cheery place to dine. Irish Times is a solid pub to dine and be jolly in Victoria.

I found out about this place thru one of those tourist maps they have at airport/bus statons. The $1 oyster was what did it for me.

Sitting at the bar eating a dozen oysters with a bowl of clam chowder by myself and people watching was fun. Everyone from the college aged boys (because legal drinking age is 19) to the bartenders were watching hockey, no doubt I was back in Canada.

What I had overall was not remarkable but basically like I always said, you couldn't beat $1 oyster!

Add us to the long list of fans above.

Alhough it seems pricey to us Yanks, there is not a thing to criticize about this fine establishment.

And I found Smithwick's beer from Ireland (CA$ 7.84 for 20 oz. imperial pint).

They have daily specials (CA$ 9.99) and on this Labour Day we enjoyed two for one fish and chips (CA$ 18 for two plates!). The dish was top drawer.

The food server Jessica M was fast, attentive and fun to interact with.

The imterior of the Irish Times Pub is beautiful, a wonderful reminder of our times in Ireland.

Go there. And try the sister pub The Bard and Banker down the street.

Even though the Bard and the Banker may look a little fancier, the food at Irish Times is better. I was THRILLED to see they have toad in the hole as an appetizer which I have not had in years. The mini yorkshire puddings with meat in side and topped with gravy definitely hit the spot. I tried the crabmeat and salmon sandwich which was like two sandwiches in one. I particularly liked the sweet sauce on the salmon. The sweet potato fries were cooked well. The service was good through most of the meal but it took us awhile to get our check so don't wait on asking for that.

Had some dinner and drinks here.  My husband is Canadian and loves poutine, so we tried theirs.  It was good except the blue cheese crumbles in it, those were nasty.  Waitresses mostly friendly but VERY busy so service slow.  Pretty expensive but I'm not familiar with average prices in Victoria so maybe what I thought was expensive is just their average.

Irish Times is a good place to go for lunch or dinner outside with a beer. The service is very friendly & dressed in cute plaid skirts. They have a good beer list with a lot of local beers clearly called out for visitors who want to explore with their stomach in addition to all the other ways (like me). Prices seemed on par with other restaurants in the area (about $15/person without drinks). We had:

    - Veggie Pizza: Yummy. The crust is thin yet still soft, and covered with a generous helping of pesto. There were tons of toppings on it, balanced by equal parts cheese. Really quite delicious & I would highly recommend it.
    - Emerald Salad: Standard green salad, but it's made with generally fresh ingredients. The lettuce was a deep green, the tomatoes were at perfect summer ripeness, but the cucumber seemed a little old and the beets were canned I think.
    - Kennebec Fries with Garlic Aioli: Good stuff. The order size is giant, like could be split as a side between 3 people. The garlic dip was average - the mayonnaise taste was a little too overpowering for me, but balanced out well with ketchup.

came here late Friday night for just drinks. it was a decent night out so we sat out on their little patio. service was a little forgetful but i didn't mind since chose to sit out there. drinks were decent and prices a little on the steep side. we thought about ordering food but they were a little pricey ($18 for a cheese and salami board.. hm..) so we didn't end up ordering any food.

the had a live band there playing covers-- making the vibe of the place even better. overall just a nice chill place to relax and grab a drink and maybe some food

Went in for a drink and some appetizers with a few friends. The waitress never brought the food I ordered, took 30 minutes to bring us the bill, and never returned to ring us up. Accordingly, we didn't tip.

On our way out of the restaurant, a few of her co-workers chided us for not leaving a tip. "That's fucking awful. Thanks a LOT for the great tip", then went on a diatribe about how they live off their tips. Sorry, but tips are a privilege, not a right.

Don't go here. I made my feelings known in my last review, and this experience only served to confirm that this place is awful.

Best irish food! Awesome service....Came across this place right before we left. Wish we had more time to try more then just the appetizers and beer. Their fries with dipping sauce were wonderful. The beer was so good! Sat outside and were entertained by all the people walking by. Fun times!! Had a blast, can't wait to go back!

Best corned beef and cabbage that I've had in a long time.  It was my second choice behind the fish and chips and I was glad that I changed my mind.  I was given a steak knife that went unused--that's how tender it was.

We were seated in a small room with enough space for four tables, but that made it feel more like being in someone's home.

We got into the pub around 2pm on a weekday and had no problem being seated right away.  Besides my awesome corned beef and cabbage, the other star dish appeared to be the shepherd's pie.

Food aside, the staff was younge but very professional.  Always had a pint ready.  Definitely a must stop if you are in Victoria.

A word of advice. If you're meandering down Government St and happen upon Irish Times, stop and enjoy the gorgeous architecture and then continue your meander. I will admit maybe, just maybe on a warm sunny day I may enjoy their patio if only to whet my whistle and take in some quality people watching.

    However....

The food is ghastly. I now know what people mean when they complain about restaurants using too much salt. This problem has resulted in almost inedible calamari. It's funny, because the food I've experienced has been so bad I almost want to keep giving them chances for they couldn't possibly serve that regularly. But they do and so I stay far away. I'm just happy my friends have grown out of wanting to go to places like this for birthdays, etc. Thank God for places like Stage!

I went in late on a Wednesday night and loved it. I found the service to be quick and drinks reasonable. I didn't eat here but whoever was playing the guitar that night really did an awesome job singing all the classics from the boss to rolling stones!

Walking up to the building is a site within itself. The stone face of the building gives off a grand feeling while entering the pub, it's dark wood was surrounded by golden taps and trim, pretty ladies in mini kilts, high vaulted ceilings, horseshoe shaped bar, upstairs lounge area, and friendly service draw you in and lets you know good times are ahead.

I came here with a friend to have a few drinks on our last night in Victoria and the night couldn't have started any better. Our server, Dayna, was one of the nicest servers I've had on my visit to B.C. offering us a taster of everything before we bought it. I know you can ask to get a taster before you buy a beer but she offered a taster. There's a big difference in my book to having tasters and offering tasters and Dayna knew the way to my good books.

The amount of golden taps on the bar astounded me. I felt like a kid in a candy store when each and every one of those golden taps glistened and shined in the bar lights. The beer selection is decent with plenty of local and Irish ales. The venue itself is fairly large for an Irish pub, probably the largest I've been in with many small booths and rooms to sit in if you don't want to be where all the commotion is.

Overall, a great place to have a drink while in Victoria. I wouldn't say the service here is slow as our server was on the ball but I did come on a Wednesday night. Prices for pitchers and pints are average.

If you're pressed for time and just want to stop in for a quick bite and a beer, I highly recommend the clam chowder - yum!  Wonderful place to get in from the elements (if inclement weather).  Lots of cozy nooks to sit and chat or be left alone.  Upstairs is cozy and dark with lots of beautiful wood and Irish advertising signs and pictures on the walls.  Very friendly staff here.  I only had the clam chowder (and an ice-cold Harps), but it was excellent, and comes with a little bit of Irish soda bread (good texture but quite flavorless).  Lots of Irish/English menu items, and the beer choices run to Irish, European, Danish, and Budweiser, etc.

A very decent pub, and good selection of imports from across the pond.

We had lunch, and the service was friendly and efficent.  We did not order any speciality of the house, but the meals were competent.

Quite pricey, but it is in the heart of the most expensive part of Victoria.

I absolutely love everything about this place. We were staying at a bed & breakfast en route to Tofino. My wife felt like staying in after our long drive so I drove into Victoria to bring food back to the room and maybe throw back a pint. I wandered into Irish Times...

I order a brew while talking to a tourist from Japan about golf. I order fish & chips to go and am told that I happened to show up on "half price night".
While ordering my third beer, I realize the guy with the guitar that's been entertaining the crowd is John Bottomley! He breaks into "You Lose  and You Gain" and I resist the urge to be the ugly American tourist, so I mute my "Woo Hoo!"

By the way... the fish & chips were phenomenal!

Until visiting Victoria, I did not think of visiting a pub for fish and chips, but after visiting the Irish Times pub, I'm a big fan of the fish and chips here, which on Mondays is offered 2-for-1 (with the purchase of a drink.)  The batter is light and tasty and melts in your mouth, along with the cod which is so fresh and oh so yummy.  Unlike other fish and chips places which can have a crispy greasy batter, the fish and chips here isn't greasy and is as tastefully playful as the Celtic musicians playing.  The portions are fairly big, two large pieces of fish, and the tartar sauce is well done and really compliments the light airy taste of the batter.

I went back several times during my visit to Victoria.  Its really fun to have a place like this to hang out....to eat, drink a beer, and listen to musicians jam.  The local musicians are very good and there were some older residents dancing and doing a jig.

I should say this up front: I don't actively *dislike* the Irish Times, but it always seems like when I'm there I have to struggle to avoid being annoyed.

My partner and I went to meet a friend before she flew back home, and decided on the Irish Times based on their acceptable beer menu and the location's general convenience. We arrived ahead of our friend and were seated at a nice window/door location - it's cold out, so no one was outside and so the door wasn't going to be opened (or so we were told...) - and had drinks brought out. The Caffery's was nice, though the coffee was absolutely terrible (had a bit of a chemical taste to it). The server didn't even suggest we order appetizers.

Our friend arrived and orders were promptly taken. It was around this point that we realized that, despite there being substantial room in the restaurant, we were seated right beside the steps to the bathroom. While not a problem in itself, it would have been nice to *not* be located beside the restroom when there wasn't a need.

The meals were tasty; two of us got the Irish Bacon and Brie burgers with yam fries, and the third a 6oz steak sandwich. The burgers were juicy, non-greasy, and the toppings were reasonably fresh. The thai-ish dip that came for the fries was delicious.

While the steak sandwich was tasty, it wasn't the medium that was asked for - a medium apparently = well done for the cook. Additionally, while the menu does note that onion rings are on top of this sandwich, what they really mean are rings of *fried* onion are put on the top; don't expect any batter to coat those rings!

As we were finishing up our main course, a couple with a dog decided that they wanted to sit outside and eat, so that they could keep their dog company. I don't begrudge them this; I *do* however, find it rather unpleasant that the door we were seated beside suddenly was opened and closed every 4-7 minutes as the couple came inside and returned outside, and servers were out to attend to them seemingly constantly. It wasn't *cold* (this is Victoria, after all...) but chilly enough that my two female companions who are from tropical climates put on their coats.

We ordered and shared a bread pudding desert, and I have to say that it was the absolute highpoint of the meal. It's made with some chocolate, cranberries, and apricots, and is to die for. It's good enough that I'd suggest that, if you wanted a desert, that the Irish Times'  bread pudding requires that you consider them for that after dinner snack.

On the whole, the service was acceptable, and the food quite nice. The lack of consideration of seating, terrible coffee, and draft that we were forced to endure for the latter part of our meal is what brought the rating to a 3/5; had we been better seated, and thus the draft not an issue, the Irish Times would have squeezed a 4/5 from me.

I guess my soundbite for the Irish Times would be this: "If you're looking for some decent (though not cheap) food and drink, and happen to be downtown, you could do a lot worse than popping into the Irish Times."

It's an Irish pub don't come in here expecting goodness.  One would think they could get a chicken burger right.  It was terrible!  No doubt a frozen chicken patty and although it said grilled I think it was boiled and then marked on the grill for effect.  Not impressed and not coming back.

The Irish Times building is beautiful inside and out and has an awesome location for meeting up in town.  I've been here a handful of times, usually just for drinks and finger foods and once for dinner.  Honestly, I don't think the food is anything super great... their calamari appetizer isn't that good, maybe their half-price oyster specials would be a good reason to go to the Irish Times.

I would recommend Irish Times if you wanted to go out for a night with buddies, drink beer, and listen to some fun Irish music.  I'm not much of a beer person (more a martini/cocktail gal), but I'll drink their bailey's/whiskey shot dropped into a glass of Guinness.... TASTY!
One caution: this is NOT the place to go to have much of a conversation unless you want to be half-shouting across the table to each other...  the live music can be mind-numbingly loud.

They have an awesome oyster happy hour. 75 cents each and they are delicious.

Other food on the menu was good. Wifey was happy with the Lamb Pizza.

They have over 30 beers on tap and the servers were nice and efficient. Had some great local beers- with maybe 10 or 12 from Vancouver island itself...... A good range of Irish beers on tap too.

Had a great table outside and chilled out and watched all the foot traffic going by.

This place is great and I will be back every time we make it up to Victoria.

I ate lunch here with my friends during our recent visit to Victoria. This place has the same owners at the Bard and Banker and a similar interior, but the food is a bit different. With a Irish pub focus, they have plenty of Irish favorites (like Shepard's pie) and some typically pub favorites like pizza and sandwiches.

I opted for the special pizza, which was chicken curry and it was pretty darn good. They had a pretty good selection of draft beers and I'd highly recommend the Driftwood White Bark Wheat Ale if you like wheat/hefe beers. Our server was very friendly and even gave us some suggestions on her favorites.

I've been to Victoria twice, and on both occasions I've stopped by the Irish Times for a pint of Guinness - only this time I brought my wife and we had dinner.  I can honestly say that the "Times" is much better for drinking and singing in the evenings than dining, though it wasn't a bad experience.

We were seated in a quiet, back area of the pub for our dinner.  Unfortunately, it was a little too "quiet", with only one other table with guests in the area.  I ordered the salmon-stuffed hamburger with sweet potato fries, mostly because my wife wanted to split the burger with me.  The fries were delicious, but the burger was just average for the money.

As popular as pub fare has become in some of these "touristy" locations, they have also become quite expensive.  Unless you come across a real treat (like the bison shepherd's pie at the Sticky Wicket), stick to drinking Guinness and carousing at the pub scene.

The Irish TImes Pub is multistoried much like The Bard and the Banker, though the food is better, the staff more cheerful, the atmosphere more unique, the draft selection more extensive and the live music iss better and lent a more authentic Irish Pub feel.

if you're perplexed where to spend a lazy afternoon enjoying great music and a guiness, look no further.

The music and incredible interior architecture make this a must-see downtown Victoria. The food is ok for Irish pub food and there are plenty of drinks to choose from. I like to go on Sunday nights for the celtic jam session and watch all the local musicians rock out with their fiddles out.

If you like this place you'll also like The Penny Farthing. Same owner and style of decor but more of a quaint neighbourhood pub.

Again I left out two stars because the service is slow. I was in Victoria for 3 weeks for work and went into town a few times. Mind you I worked with mainly men so they liked coming here for other reasons. I shall explain those reasons.

The servers all wear kilts. The place has stairs. Enough said? If they had reviewed the place they'd give it 5 stars just for that alone, but since there were no males in kilts, I'll judge by the food, drinks, and service.

Food: I've tasted the calamari which was decent....I had a club wrap with sweet potato fries which was pretty good....heard the jerk chicken pizza was overpowered by some sort of spicy pepper that didn't taste like jerk spice.

Drinks: The way to go here is to have beers. I ordered a lemon drop martini and seriously, the martini glass was about half filled, nearly two sips and I was finished with the $12 drink. Stick to beers and you'll be fine. They have a decent beer selection.

Service: Very slow! All the servers have been very nice, but whether it's their fault or the kitchens fault, who knows, but the service is just extremely slow.

Definitely worth a stop during your stay in Victoria.

I am not a bar-fly nor do I frequent bars, they are just not my thing, nor have they ever been.  But the Irish Times Pub was a great place to stop and visit.

We arrived fairly early (I guess) at around 9 and the place was packed.  We were warned by the guy at the door that there weren't any seats available and we'd just have to find a place to stand.  We walked around the place once (it was packed) and we lucked out, right as we made it back around to the door, there were two seats on an elevated table across from the bar.

We were promptly served and simply enjoyed drinks (a Carlsberg and Grower's Cider).   The server forgot what I had ordered but it didn't matter, the service was still reasonable.  The place was busy and there was a gradual ebb and flow of patrons, there was a great energy in the place.

Within a few minutes a band started to play (a nightly occurrence for no cover).  This being an Irish Pub and them being an Irish band, it was a lot of fun.  The band was having a great time playing Irish Jigs, and we were having a great time, too.

Of course it was loud, conversation wasn't easy, but it didn't matter, it was fun!  I remarked how I had never been the type to have fun in bars (it was too loud, I couldn't talk to my friends or other people, and I always felt obligated to talk, do, or be someone that didn't come naturally).  Not here, not now.  I was relaxed and enjoying myself.

That continued until the band took a break.  A patron joined us and proceeded to talk away about the bar (when was the band coming back), about Victoria (I walked here from across town), and her cruise (have to get back to the vessel to vote for my roommate who I don't know in a Karaoke competition).  Needless to say, as soon as our drinks were gone, we were out of there.  It was fun while it lasted, and truth be told, we aren't night owls, and 10:30 is late enough for us!

Oh, and sorry, we didn't eat anything, so I can't tell you about the food!

Well I'm in town for work for a few days. Ferris is crazy long line that they won't let me skip by taking a seat at the bar. Red Blue Fish had already closed for the night.

This place seemed like a good enough idea.

    High/Low lights:

    +Food was good.
    -Slow service.
    +Good beer selection
    -Slow service.
    +Decent prices
    -Slow service.

Its pretty cramped in the place, maybe its just takes forever for the bar mairds to get around in the joint... :-\

I came here with a few coworkers and friends while visiting Victoria on a Friday night.  Of course, it was packed and we had to wait outside for a bit.  However, I was not disappointed.  If I ever came back to Victoria, I would definitely come back to this pub.

I had 2 beers (Driftwood White Bark Wheat Ale & Smithwick's), and I had the Irish Poutine appetizer.  I enjoyed the Driftwood, thought Smithwick's was ok, and thought the Irish Poutine was the best thing ever.  Aside from that, I thought the waitresses were fairly nice and very attentive.

Fun place to grab a pint.  The waiters and waitresses are all super friendly.  My husband and I sat at the bar and had a great time chatting up the bartender.  They are very quick with your drinks.  You will not be disappointed with the beer selection here.
