Here in Nova Scotia there isn't much point in choosing between gas stations since our government has decided to guarantee gas stations high profits by setting a minimum price each week, implying that every gas station in all of Halifax charges that same minimum price. (Proof that the minimum price is always higher than market price.) With the official justification that this is necessary to preserve rural gas stations. It would be a lot cheaper to simply subsidize rural gas stations rather than force everybody in the whole province to pay more than market price for gas but I guess that's too complicated for them to understand. The environment can't be the reason either, since gas stations rather than the government benefit from minimum prices -- if the government wanted higher prices to make us use less gas then they should use higher fuel taxes to achieve that goal, since that would preserve competition between gas stations and would direct the money into its own pockets rather than in the pockets of BP, Esso, Shell, etc.

Nonetheless I have developed a bit of a liking for the Ultramar gas station on Inglis Street. What I like about it is that it is relatively small, implying that it has a more relaxed and less stressful atmosphere than the bigger gas stations where dozens of hectic people want to fill up as fast as possible. Its staff are very friendly and helpful. The only two downsides: first, like most other gas stations they charge you 50¢ for air; second, the pumps often don't print receipts even if you select "yes", so you have to go inside to ask for one.

Periodically, I'll have a car at my disposal which means three things: laser tag, IMAX movies and driving friends to/from the airport. All three things are highlights in my otherwise bland existence. The worst part about having a car and living in Downtown Halifax is the parking situation but I have a permanent spot so I can deal.

The second worst? Finding a gas station. Apparently cars need move juice to actually drive me places and since I'm pretty inept at owning anything more complicated than a television, I always forget to "fill 'er up".

*I do enjoy that slang like that is at my disposal when I have a car but I digress.

While there are several gas stations around town, I find most of them incredibly inconvenient. Ones on Robie Street stress me out because of the traffic surrounding and don't get me started on the SuperStore station on Barrington. Why are supermarket parking lots three steps away from becoming a Senior Citizen Demolition Derby? I feel like I'm playing a version of Mario Kart where everyone only drives sedans or SUVs and their weapons are their unleashed children or poor eyesight.

Thankfully, Ultramar on Inglis Street is conveniently located not two minutes up the road from SuperStore. So is it worth your while to drive out of the way for the sake of steadying your nerves? Well, for me it is. Inglis Street is usually quiet - save for the after school hours - and the parking lot is quite big. I wouldn't expect groundbreaking service when you pull in but you can always avoid any human interaction by paying at the pump.

    I love technology.

It's pretty handy having this Ultramar in the South End based on the fact that it's the only gas station for a few kms... lets face it, we all let the 'ol gas tank run down to that point occasionally.

You can find most of your basics at the attached convenience store as well! Don't mind the door, this gas station locks after hours, so you just have to get buzzed in.
